I just had a random thought pop into my head after seeing my BitShares account number: #114583
Remember ICQ? It was one of the first widely adopted chat / messaging platforms, and I remember creating an account pretty early on (1996 or 1997 maybe?). Most of my friends had never heard of it, but once it became popular it seemed everyone was using it. My account number was somewhere around ~130,000. Everyone else I saw had account numbers in the millions.
Edit: It's possible I've completely misremembered my account number and it was actually 130,000,000. A friend mentioned they had a number around 120M and remembered signing up around when I thought I did... I've been searching through old computers and backups trying to find my original ICQ info. I found a forum post of mine from 1999 on the Licq forums, but didn't have my number in the signature... so, yeah. If you have more info, please let me know. I'm curious.
My BitShares account number is even less than that.
What about Steem?
13,452
That's really, really early.
Anyone with an account number less than a million is early, if this platform takes off as we all hope it will.
Back to the ICQ example:
At its peak around 2001, ICQ had more than 100 million accounts registered. At the time of the Mail.Ru acquisition in 2010, there were around 42 million daily users. Since 2013 ICQ has 11 million monthly users.
How many accounts will eventually be created on the Steem blockchain? How many people will want direct rewards for their social media activity?
What we need, I think, is patience and time. 1996 to 2001 is five years. ICQ provided a valuable solution for its time. Steemit is doing the same, rewarding content authors and curators with real tokens of value. I'm proud to be a pioneer here, and I hope you are too. I can't wait to see what the future has in store for us.

It's seems to mu guys that you are using Seemit and STEEM only to pump yours BTS. Next will be EOS. Good luck with that.
I didn't use or buy BTS at all until I started using Steemit. The success of Steemit is what got me interested in BTS. Once I figured out how we can short the USD with bitUSD, I was hooked. What's not to like about that? As I started buying and using BitShares, I posted about the process so others could also benefit from the fall in USD value:
As to EOS, I think it will be an amazing technology, far superior to any existing blockchain technology in terms of performance. Why do you say "good luck with that"? Do you have reason to believe it won't be wildly successful? I think early ICO investors will get burned because they aren't being rational which I discussed in detail here:
I'm trying to help people understand how this ICO works so they don't lose their shirt. That said, I still think the long-term future price of EOS will be quite high because it solves scaling problems ETH can not solve due to the parallelized versus serial nature of the way things are handled.
Thank you. Good luck.
Unlike you I bought my STEEM.
BTS: 21,954
STEEM: 10,929
You're an original gangster. :)
Ping me when you get settled, we definitely need to hang out.
BTS... 11,000ish and still hodling for all I'm worth (literally, BTS is almost all I'm worth :)
Great post! Puts things into perspective. I joined Steemit 1.)For the social media aspect 2.) As a long play crytocurrency investment. Out of all the various crytocurrencies I have read up on this one seems to make the most sense and have the largest impact moving into the future.
I agree. Of all the projects out there, this one (and BitShares) is actually delivering on promises and providing very real value. I love it.
We are off to Nashville tomorrow btw. Whats the #1 cant miss place to eat? If you have a recommendation for best brewery I will take that too 😁 We might get lucky and the wives let us dads out for a bit.
So sorry! I saw this reply right before shutting down and then forgot about it the next day!
How long will you be in town? If you want, drop me an email at luke.stokes @ gmail. Maybe we can grab a bit somewhere or something. As for food... there's a number of places, I guess it depends on what kind of food you want. :)
Hey Luke! No worries. We had a good trip. The weather wasn't the greatest for outdoor fun, but we made the best of it. I hit up some good breweries and had a lot of southern Nashville hot chicken from varies places. I'll let you know if I ever make it down again. Thanks!
Glad you got some hot chicken! :)
i remember ICQ lol
yeah i was user 170860 i can't seem to shake that for some reason.
Hah! You remember the exact number. That's awesome.
of course, some things you just never forget. my icq is one of them. ha! :)
ICQ was so hype... I was using irc at that time tho
Ah yes. I spent a bit of time in the various #warez channels as well. IRC was the best. The purist still think it is.
Haha, yeah #warez was also where I hung out :D
Back when the internet was scary and you were never supposed to give any personal information away to anyone.
Ha! That's a good one. I guess I know who is behind that! ;)
Ahaaa so now I upvoted myself :P and now I see how it could work, just to get attention ;) Sneaky!
my mother still lives in that era of time lol. The good ol' days man, i remember HTML Yahoo Chat before they programmed it in Java. So slow, but so cool back then.
I love hearing stories of those who pioneered the Internet on BBS's using slow-as-molasses dialup connections. I came in the second wave, what I call the AOL adoption wave. :)
Ha yeah same here, i marvel at the stories of the old BBS systems and the old school pirates. I came in on AOL 1.0 too lol
You mean you guys never had NetZero? or NetZero 3G?! (still slow as fuck)
i had netzero when it was actually still free lol, they had another one in NYC that was free too, metro something dial up. lol
9,387 - yikes!
You're a pre-10k-er. :)
9,964
Now we need a badge or something.
I was here before all, y'all.
762 =)
BALLER!
Very nice. :)
I'm in for the long haul myself, I've already positioned some of my other coins into Steem Power. I believe in this platform for sure, crypto is the future and so is Steemit!!!
Indeed!
Yes indeed sir. I like looking at my steemit account number too. It is under 40k. Now we have over 200k and it's still early :-)
Very early indeed. I'm pretty stoked to be a part of this.
Yes I guess we are early adopters. I like the small community though, it's spam free, ad free, polite and friendly. If it goes too big those could change :(
Change is constant.
Wait, that sounds weird.
I think the important thing here is to continue to improve your craft. Power up whenever possible, and continue to support users who provide valuable content. In order for this platform to grow we need genuine reader engagement, discussion, and a belief in the system.
Thanks for this reminder Luke!
You're welcome! I'm glad you appreciated it.
Very proud to be here and looking forward to the growth of steemit!
Early bird and all that, aye.
totally agree. there's so much more for improve on Steemit. I'm quite sure Steemit has the potential to become bigger than FB and the likes!
That sure would be nice, but we have a long, long way to go.
Thank you for sharing this
Thank you for reading it. :)
It makes me wonder what my number is now... I should go check...
How does one do that?
You're 207,940. https://steemd.com/@me-shell
You can find more tools here as well: http://steemtools.com/
Thanks for that!
Wayyyyy earlier than me! :]]]
will steemit still be working the way it does in five years though, ie rewards etc?
No, but since changes are community driven in many ways (like "the experiment" which influenced hard fork 19), I'm optimistic about the future.
So do you have any idea what might happen regarding rewards in future? That is, after all, the main reason that so many people are being attracted to the platform at the moment and how it is being sold to those on other blogging sites. What happens when the rewards are no more??? Will we all hang around because it's such a great place and great community?? Will we all still feel the same when we are no longer being rewarded financially for our efforts and input??
I have no idea how the whole thing works so please excuse my ignorance! :)
What would cause this to happen?
It's worth learning how this stuff works. It's quite amazing. :)
I'm glad to be early. Wishing I had found Steemit from it's beginning. I feel like I have missed out on a lot of important history in really just one year and have been trying to catch up. Thanks for posting Luke.
There's always a ton to learn in crypto. We'll never be caught up, but that's what makes it fun!
I'm 46,232. Not too bad!
Beat me by about 20,000 so not bad at all!
Dang dude, that is crazy to know. I always wondered what that number at the top of Steemd was. Turns out I'm 65,086. A bit later than you, but factoring in that an account created a few days ago is past 228,020 I seems like I was actually pretty early! And here I thought I missed the early adopter boat
Anyone below 1M is way early.
Yes, I've been reminded repeatedly that while I may feel I'm late to the party, the fact is anyone on Steemit right now is indeed early to the game. Easy to forget sometimes, though.
Yes we are early. But unlike ICQ, Steemit has no effective competition.
Not yet anyway. :)
Yes, I'm glad that is narrower here. Then it will be even harder :)
The best is all this disruptive technologies grow at an exponential rate! And we are really benefiting with them.. upvoted!
Still remember how I was trying to convince a friend that ICQ is a revolutionary tool :)
That's awesome man! I love reading about new perspectives that I can take on how BEAST steem will be on day. Keep ittttttttt upppp :D
Thanks!
This is a great perspective. Those of us who are "late to the game" now are still the "early adopters" of tomorrow. It's easy to feel like cryptocurrency is all the rage now, surrounded by this community - but then in the real world, people mostly have no idea about it or, at most, "have heard of bitcoin".
Yeah, I kind of get shocked when I talk about bitcoin outside of the community. People like, "Huh? Isn't that the internet thing used for drugs and ransomware?"
I can't wake up early and I can't make it to an appointment early...but I'm always early on blockchain advancements!
Just looked mine up. I'm 49,544!!!
Nice :)
I have absolutely no idea what ICQ is/was @lukestokes ! The first chatroom I came across was MIRC in the early 2000's :) even then I had no idea how to use it. And then came Yahoo Messenger mid 2000's for me haha.
As far as STEEM goes, I guess I'm not that early : 187,118
BitShares ? DAMN I KEEP HEARING ABOUT BTS, I need to do research, find out what it is, and what it's used for ! Who know what I'm missing out!
Anyway, good stuff man, good stuff. You have my full support +1 follower for you.
Thank you!
I've done quite a few posts on BitShares. Maybe you can start there:
Thank you so much for these. Finally some starting ground for me to do research. I really appreciate you taking the time to put them together for me! I see you're a dedicated and consistent author. I will add you to steemvoter.com as soon as I get my hands on a VIP pass :)
Thanks! I'd appreciate your vote for witness as well if you feel I've earned it.
Nah man ... I don't really know what to say about that...
... just joking! You've got my vote sir :) Hope it helps
Where can i see my number?
You're 168,846. https://steemd.com/@thecryptotrader
More tools available here: http://steemtools.com/
Thank you very much! Not too bad, under 1 million :P
Like your post because I believe everyone has a chance on steemit if they just try.
Interesting anecdote. One of the things I always wonder is if Steem will be like Myspace or Facebook. What I mean is, Myspace was really the first mover and grew rapidly but when Facebook came in it made Myspace look old and obsolete. I always wonder if Steemit will dominate this niche market or if another blockchain based social network will swoop in and become top dog.
It's definitely a possibility. My hope is if that does happen, it will be with an interface like busy.org or beta.chainbb.com which will still use the Steem blockchain.
That really is the beauty of Steem. Investment in Steem is not limited by a single platform. When the vision of an entire social media ecosystem built on the Steem blockchain is realized it will truly be something to behold!
@LukeStokes... Thank You 4 giving this Perspective & Point-of-View... in a time of instant "everything", Your Post is giving us all a moment of pause, to actually realize, That YES... all we really need to do "is keep going Forward" and...
BE Patient... >> : ~ ))
Thanks Again Luke 4 Your Words of Wisdom...
Have a Great Week !!
Thank you. Patience is key in many, many areas of life for achieving wellbeing.
I missed out on Apple, Google and Facebook. Not missing out on Steem!!!
It's a great thought to know this site allows me to em"power" myself by directly paying people I follow and appreciate - like you. This will only continue to grow, and I'm glad to be one of those pioneers.
Thanks so much. :)
Hi look just a random question , what are your thoughts on SIACOIN??
I haven't looked into it much. I don't currently own any. I saw a ASIC miner being advertised which is interesting.
bts: 122779
steemit: 15987
it's nice to be aerly for once - i'm usually late LOL
Thanks for your important information as you always post. Watching and learning from you.
You're welcome!
Interesting point of view! Didn't think of that! How can one check his number of account?😊 Curious now lol!
You're 204,449 as noted here: https://steemd.com/@athenajade
Thanks!!!😉
160,090, and yes I remember that little mouse! ICQ and mobile pagers woohoo!
Ah... pagers. I had a pager very early on when I lived on a boat.
Wow, you know what I know....https://steemit.com/steem/@farmandadventure/why-bother-learning-how-to-do-things-the-old-way
I'm making you my new muse🌻
if steemit becomes one day like reedit, damn the steem price will be high !
indeed we're early, i joined around 180K lol but i believe it's very very early :)
I agree, you are early indeed.
right on point. am so glad am early too.
Yeah. Focusing on the bigger picture puts things into perspective. We are golden :D
Haha that certainly is early! I am right behind ya with 17,832, unfortunately I did not become active right away (major regret). Can't wait to see where this goes ! Cheers!
No better time to start than now. :)
steemit is one dimensional it may get bigger like reddit
It is a very good point @lukestokes
A wise man once said, "If you're not first......you're LAST!"
We are in position to be in front of an extremely large wave. This is the second wave. Waves come in sets of 3. When the next one hits we could all be sitting pretty!
It's funny because even the big waves are often made up of many little waves, like a fractal in nature. This second wave, I think, is still part of the first big wave which hasn't completed yet. Millions of users is going to be very, very interesting.
Yes it will be very interesting and this blockchain is taking these transaction volumes like a champ it seems. A lot of room to scale and almost endless possibilities.
It is funny you were on ICQ so early. There is something about being able to spot something good early. I was on Friendster in 2003, and Facebook in 2004. I saw it happen for Facebook very early on. I really feel that the community is heading in the right direction here. It has a very real shot and ultimately even if it doesn't get Reddit size or Facebook size I'm ok with that. We will still catch one hell of a ride.
Put on your seatbelt! :)
With all the progress being made, I'm definitely pumped! :D I wonder if anyone in the hundreds would be able to see this and comment here.
Steemian 51,069 over here. And with the same skinny reputation when I started.
