BLOG: Ambitious Plan to get 27 hour days

in #steemit7 years ago

Jordan Peterson gave us the secret to having more than 24 hours in the day!

Canadian sociologist Jordan Peterson was on the Joe Rogan Podcast (#1070) and he started talking about how to maximize your time in life. He goes over this concept in detail in his book, "12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos". I haven't read it yet, but I just purchased it for $15.57 on amazon so I'll be getting that in the mail soon. What I'd like to write about today is his concept of wasted time.

I waste almost 50% of my time on task I dont want to do.

If you asked me how much time I actually spend on things that I DON'T want to do, i'll be as honest as I can, and say that it's up to 50% of the total time I devoted. Case in point:

I have to study for the PE exam, If I allot 3 hours a day studying, but I spend 1.5 of those hours groaning and moaning by getting up and getting something to snack on, go on youtube, change the music on spotify, then I'll end up only spending 1.5 REAL hours of studying. The rest of that time is WASTED

Jordan Peterson challanges that idea by asking you to actually spend the amount of time that you would get real work done, and spend that "wasted" time on doing something more efficient, and you'll find that you actually end up getting A LOT more done.

The Challenge: Save 3 hours a day.

For the next 2 months, I HAVE to make efficient use of my time. There's just no way around it. I simply have too many tasks to work on, and too little time to do it, so how can I save 3 hours a day?

  1. I spend "too much time" studying ineffectively. From here on out, I'm going to instead of spending my morning doing mundane tasks such as look at instagram, I'm going to spend 1 hour of my morning studying for my PE exam.

  2. I spend "too much time" doing non-sense at work. I'm going to cut out some of the medial tasks at work that occurs when I ask someone a question. There's always some conversation going on, and I'm going to squash at least 1 hour of that from my day. For that 1 hour that I save each day, I'm going to spend that hour studying at work. The real question is, if I become 1 hour more efficient with work, who gets that advantage? My employer or me? I've had no complaints about how much time I spend working and "not working".

  3. I'm going to start going to the gym in the morning rather than after work. Going to the gym in the morning is a lot easier because I have to get to work and you end up on a schedule. If you go after work, its SO much harder to get out of the gym, and go through your motions. This means that I get to have an hour back at the end of the day.

By doing this, I've broken up my 3 hour study block into two 1 hour sessions during the day, and then a single 1 hour session at night. I think I'll be able to save 3 hours and STILL do what I normally do!

I know this sounds almost too good to be true, but I'll be microblogging on steemit it to help keep track of things!

Oh man! Did I just tell myself I would microblog my life on steemit?? How much time will I end up wasting to do that? We will see my friends!!

I'm aware of so much time we waste and without even knowing it.
I want to make a change in my life
I will wait for your latest post
12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos . thanks @motoengineer

here is a challenge, post up how you will do 1 thing differently everyday this week, and how it will save you 1 hour a day!

Thanks for sharing this tip, I was actually thinking of productivity today and wrote a post about it a couple of hours ago. I will take up your challenge this week because I really like the idea, to find time each day for exercise and reading.

how are you going to do this! we should start a 1 hour a day challenge in the office and challenge everyone to write a spark post about how to save 1 hour each day!!!!

lol I failed today too, got home only now... but i realized today you already save one hour per day by never going out for lunch! do you count that already?

myself i'm trying to find a gym near work that would have classes available at 7 am and wouldn't be ridiculously expensive - this way i would get 1.5 extra hours per day and so much improvement in my life!

skipping lunch is something i already do! so i dont count it.

What kind of gym classes are you looking for?

When i has a schedule I used to do HIIT and weight training but I’d like the option to do yoga too. I need classes because I don’t want to think while working out and a condensed set of exercises in one hour used to work for me best... if you ever come across something please let me know!

Truly inspiring stuff. I need to read that book. And break free of my mundane bs routine. Thanks dude.

its a TINY change to do what set out to do, but even on my first day, i screwed up. How hard is it to get back 3 hours of your day, really? apparently stupid fucking hard. when im finished with it, ill pass it on to you!

Morning workouts suck in some ways, but the time saved is great and you work to the deadline. I find the gym is more empty and I can do more in the same time too. Only way I can get to the gym on a reliable basis these days.

An empty gym is a BIG part of why going in the morning is better. I can literally punch out a workout in 30 minutes, take a shower and be out of there in another 15, it really optimizes my day, but holy hell, i gotta wake up at 5am. i'm no coffee drinker either, so my mornings can vary depending on what i ate, how i feel etc. its not like i can just slam back some drugs (lets face it, that's exactly what caffeine is) and start my day (and then crash later).

How long is your workout?

45 minutes to an hour. Cardio and weights alternating days. Most days I wish I had more time to workout, but between work and kids I have to squeeze in what I can!

I hear ya! I work out only 3x a week and I hate working out. But as I get older, my strength starts to go if I don't hit the gym regularly.

Indeed sometimes we are not aware of a life that we live, so we forget that the time that keeps turning it to be in vain. Because we spend that time instead of doing a useful job for our lives. Your words remind me of my past, how much time I have wasted without producing something for my life. Because all that time I use to have fun. But now that I am aware of it, I am now changing my life by using this time for something that will benefit my life.

Because I do not want this time I will be consumed, because it was all in vain. With you writing this post, I am increasingly aware that it is very much a loss if we are wasted this time for things that are not useful. Thank you so much for sharing @motoengineer and hopefully all the time you go through will not be in vain. Because you always spend time to work... :)

dont be too hard on yourself for not doing enough in life. Its in the past, and we cant change it. But you make a good point in saying that we can be aware of it and change yourself for the better!

how about this, how about you write a well thought out post about how you will do something different everyday this week to save 1 hour each day!

Great idea to break things down into small tasks and keep and record of about how long those small tasks take you to complete. Then you can easily gauge how long you will need to get things done to be the most efficient.

100% i think steemit helps keep a good record of that. they say that if you tell people what you are going to do, you are more likely to do it because you dont want to let them down. and you are more likely to let yourself down before you let someone else down.

topics that are rarely notified of people, I think it is very good to know, because many people forget with time more useful.
I'm curious of your lastest post!!
