It would seem that no industry or ecosystem is immune to automation. The winds of change are blowing hard, and we're coming along for the ride whether we like it or not.
LOL mate for me this ratio is same but reversed :)
Being the non-bot that I am, a lot of this resonates with me.
Currently, I don't really feel strongly either way about the bots. Part of me believes they have a place and utility but at the same time this is a social network and they should be at the fringes of the system, not dominating it. If they start to play to big a role, it will likely be pretty detrimental to this blockchain experiment of ours.
All that aside, I most enjoyed the last bit of your article. The recognition that this really is something special that we are getting to experiment and participate in.
This sentence just kills it though.
We never know how far our impact on others goes, but it's always farther than we'd imagine.
Keep posting the good stuff and I'll keep appreciating it!

I sometimes have posts with more comments than views, which is truly bizarre. I suspect the system may be low balling the view number in some way...
It can be frustrating to get such a low view count, but as you say, at least we are blessed to be early adopters here and to be able to earn Steem rewards such as we do.
Most likely you are receiving comments from comment bots or when users don't see the "full context" but reply to a reply...
Maybe @nnnarvaez can shed some light for me here ?
Still waiting for the #HeyMattCoin and ICO!!!!
haha one of these days barry!! I need to be more famous first. maybe I can get a Floyd Mayweather endorsement :-)
Touche, well played Matthew
lol
+1 man
This should be addressed to make steemit a healthy site for us content creators. We need to have a policy of having to skim atleast the contents of the blog before upvoting. That's the real essence of the steem blockchain isn't it?
Mmm, I'm outlawing bots altogether would be a great move. They do have a time and place, have served the growth of this community, and doing away with them might not be as conducive as arguments could be presented for...
I've been wondering about the voting bots, like how to get on a list. LOL
But seriously, I haven't delegated my voting to a bot for 2 reasons, I don't have enough voting power for that to work reasonably well yet, and I like to read what I'm voting on. I don't know if a post is worth a vote until I look at it. There have been several posts that I've looked at but didn't vote on for one reason or another. If I automate my voting, I don't have that kind of control, I could be voting for pure crap and I wouldn't know it.
I see what you mean - 57 votes on this, 18 views.
I try to always at least skim a post if I give it an upvote.
Well, here's a vote and a comment from a real human.
I don't have anything against bots, as long as they are the result of reasonably intelligent human input. That is, someone (and I know this applies to quite a few "someones" on my typical upvote list) too the time to manually get to know my content well enough to create bot parameters for me. Nifty. Cool.
I feel less enthusiastic about the "0.02% upvote" that often show up... that feels more like a 'feel good vote" that has nothing to do with my content. I could have posted a picture of pocket lint, and it gets the same reward as my posting War & Peace.
Whereas I appreciate the use of bots-- from a functional perspective-- I prefer to do my curation manually. Maybe it's just because I'm an old fart... and I believe that PEOPLE create communities... bots, code and automation do not.
Which-- I suppose-- tells me something about what seven months on Steemit has taught me: I like the interaction; the engagement.
Thankfully... we can perhaps all get what we want from Steemit, and still help the community grow and prosper.
👊
I'm real 😂😂😂
This is an interesting conundrum that is a part of the evolution of our society right now. Where does my value lie and how do I perceive my value? I have many things I can point to as my "contribution" but those are primarily non-monetary, ie. being a father, a husband, a kind human. When I see the ratio of views to votes on some of my posts, it makes me feel a bit frustrated as you have very accurately pointed out, but that metric is just one of the many we can use.
I have a very dualistic view on the bots. They are both good and bad and it depends on the intent. They can be used for good and bad and I hope the good intentions win out but history does not give a bright view of our future given human involvement. Like you say it is the ripple effect and we never know who our words may inspire.
This platform has given me the reason to finally restart writing in general. It always lies there in the back of my head, but now I have a place to put the writing that gives a tangible response. Even if it is bots, at this point it is part of what helps keep me typing and spewing forth the thoughts within my head. If someone is able to learn, grow, or a forced to think from my words then I feel that they have served their purpose.
Excellently stated.
Bots and Steemit automation are a curse and a blessing
Yes, this is something that I experienced also with some of my posts.
It seems to me there needs to be more reward for curation, maybe a little less for authorship. People are motivated to create content far more than to take the time to read and reward quality content, so you get bots voting and people posting some pretty marginal stuff.
I think there is value in the bits but far more value in connecting with another human either by upvoting or commenting.
I know, and even those people who do view your posts often don't read it! I know, because I posted a hoax review of an imaginary cryptocurrency (see post here: link) and I got a bunch of upvotes and even comments.. but the comments were congratulating me on the good post and excellent research... pretty obvious they did not even read it!
On a sidenote, I just noticed that this post of yours has 126 votes, and only 45 views. Point proven, I guess!
Yeah. The slew of "nice post" type comments are rather discouraging when such comments really aren't relevant to the type of content or suggest they didn't read or understand. Sometimes wonder if they're bots or the users just don't read/speak good English or are just dumb. Haha.
I think it's because 75% of the people on here are not interested in content, but rather in making money. Popularity on Steemit has nothing to do with quality of content - it's 99% a matter of what people think will earn them the best curating bonuses apparently. IMO it's a big problem of Steemit.
I'd like to argue. Though can't deny the validity of that viewpoint - regardless of what the actual percentage might be.
very nice post!
I'm new here, so I am reading everything I can about steemit these days. Thanks for the info.
I am real, a hooman, and not a bot and this has been ongoing for a long time.... but at least you know I am real.
I have seen and on my posts, ideas given about how to INCENTIVIZE fixing this.... many of us care about the views, comments, and ENGAGEMENT too, apart from votes.
Take care man, have a good weekend man.
Vancouver Canadians won their league a couple nights ago!!!
Also more proof there, I am not a bot
LOL
Yes... engagement. Fuck, that has felt to be lacking lately - so many generic comments. No quick easy answers...
You have really nailed it again man.
Honestly, I wish I had found you months ago. Shoot.
Well, at least you can head over to work out your frustrations and do the Grouse Grind
lol
shite, good reminder. I've been procrastinating on that one...
See, I am a good little friend for you to have.

Ron says I am average too, and Taxation is Theft
The value posts receive on steemit is like the attention parents like to gush on their children's talents. They might tell their son or daughter that they are the best singer in the world they ever heard. Then they go out in the real world and try out for something like American Idol, and the judges ask them if they would please consider any other vocation instead of singing again in the future. Mom and dad may be upset, but they are glad to have their valued child back.
Lol. Interesting metaphor.
What I find astonishing is that people find the ratio of likes vs views in platforms such as Youtube "normal". For example the Adele's Hello video has 2 billion views, 12 million likes and 666k dislikes. That is a 167/1 ratio.
So does this mean that only 1 out of every 167 people liked it...what is normal about that?
The ratio of comments to views is even worse 650k to 2 billion is a ratio of around 3000/1.
Even a steemit post with 120 votes and 3 views has a ratio of 40/1.
I'd say that one may simply be a matter of most people not bothering to either like or dislike a video on YouTube. I rarely do.
Good stuff man. I think that bots are free market at play and if it weren't happening whoever has all that so would probably spend at least a portion upvoting themselves somehow. I don't like it all that much and I agree it won't work with mass adoption.. the saddest part of looking on steemit is noticing that the view count is so low, at least for me. I had a post get shared on Facebook by a guy running for senator, but he shared the busy.org link and I don't think the views takes into account views on busy.org.. so maybe more people are seeing then you think! Additionally I have been thinking about how I need to make posts interesting enough to link to on other forums like Reddit and Facebook.. that will get more views and more people seeing steemit, but no gain in payout initially.. thanks for your thoughts though, I've been gone a couple weeks but I'm back now. So there will be at least one more view in your posts, adios though!
Or maybe we should look at the upvotes and views in isolation, and just focus on views as a true reflection of how well our posts are appreciated. Or even take it one step further, to focus on comments (ignoring the bot like ones) to see who really has read the post
Also keep in mind that it's a decentralized system and there's probably no way to get an accurate count of actual views. The view counter on Steemit.com most likely only reflects views through Steemit.com. There are certainly a lot of voting bots, but there are also real people who view posts through other sites or mobile apps.
Good point...
To me this whole bot thing diminishes Steemit
