Things not to do in comments on my posts

in #steemit7 years ago

A few tips on things I don't like to see:

  1. 'upvoted'. Okay, thanks, but I expect your vote is not worth much and it's not going to make me even look at your feed unless your comment is interesting. I care more about what you have to say.
  2. Tagging me. I will see your comment anyway, so you gain nothing my tagging me (@ plus name). If I'm getting notifications for replies and mentions then I will get two for that and that is just annoying. Again, it won't encourage me to check you out.
  3. Calling me 'sir'. There's no need for that sort of formality here. I appreciate other cultures may differ.
  4. Semi-random comments that sort of relate to the post. I get some comments that appear to be generated by some sort of AI. At first glance they seem topical, but they actually say nothing really. It may just be people who don't speak much English. If you do struggle then there are plenty of on-line translation tools that can help you to communicate better.
  5. Do I even need to mention 'nice post', 'follow me', 'try my voting bot'? These will at best be ignored and possibly flagged as my signature block indicates.

Let's see if any comments on this post fall into any of these. Thankfully the majority of the comments I get are relevant and interesting. Despite what some fear Steemit has not descended into a total bot-fest of mutual voting, but I'll continue to support those who deal with the abuse.

Steem on, and write good comments.

May I add something from me?:) To the third paragraph?:) I would write "calling me "bro"...

Before to read you comment, I'm writing the same thing :D
Stop to call us "bro", please, we don't look like "bro" ^_^

Exactly my point. One guy even kept insisting... That was creepy:)

Lol. Shows how much attention they give

Exactly:) After few months I came to the mirror, asking my husband "Do I actually look like BRO?" :):):)

Your comments really made me laugh, especially this last one! 😂

Very nicely stated. This is relevant info for the present with all of the new users. I'm glad you said it. I wish more people would see it. Resteemed.

I think the main rule is to not be annoying

Nice post: Please follow, upvote and delegate all your steem to me.

Boomshanka "May the seed of your loins be fruitful in the belly of your woman"

Playing with fire mate ;) I was waiting for someone to go for multiple offences. I know these are minor niggles in the scheme of things.

My seed has already been fruitful. Not planning on any more offspring though.

I had me tubes ripped out when the Twins were born. :-)

Dammit was beaten to it :0)

hahahahaha - sorry for laughing (please don't get me wrong), but it seems the 'limit' has been reached and someone apparently put the drop that spilled the cup. 😉

But I understand you perfectly, although I have to say that I feel every day more like we are the lonely islands around here or at least (but almost for sure) considered as black sheeps, who "doesn't have a single clue about the marketing." If this might be even the slightest considered as some sort of marketing?!
From my point of view, it's pure aggressive and abusive SCAM & SPAM.
But hey, they are telling me I'm too strict and harsh, so how would I know!?

Therefore, to come across some like-minded person warms my heart, especially if that person is some old fellow. 🙂

Well we can each curate the comments on our own posts as we see fit.

Yeah, agree! If nothing, I think we at least can reserve that right.

Perhaps by "sir" they are implying they are of royal decent and that you have, for the amazingly high quality of your post, been knighted? Lol.

I don't know of any blue blood in my family, but people should be judged by their deeds, not their family

The reason decentralized platforms like steemit fail to get users is that,

There is little to no moderation. It allows trolls and spammers the freedom they want. They can post 6 billion spam posts and get away with it unless another member flags him/her.

In steemit, we have steemcleaners but they are understuffed I think. There is way to many spam on steemit.

Actually it's not that bad. I'm not getting much spam on my posts. People are moderating. I flag the spam and that may put them off. There are still issues, but I think the community wants to deal with them. There is no other platform quite like steemit

Holy shit I thought I'm the only one who has enough of those upvote bots.

The rewarding aspect of Steemit has compelled many to be too nice, too demanding and sometimes too formal. Besides anything that we vie for on this platform, I believe we must also be ourselves, avoid going too far, avoid faking our identities and even neglecting our values. When I started blogging here that's what I taught I should do until I discovered one thing and that is, respect is earned and not demanded. I think you have a point

Hehehe, you sure think many people will read these rules, not to think of abiding or stop doing what you hate. Bro, always expect anything here. People are full of suprices. What I do? I ignore anything that has the potential of getting on my nerves. Steem on bro.

Honestly, I didn't think tagging people worked.

I do it to benefit the people reading my comment. For example, I'll mention your account in my reply, and that's done to nudge people to check you out, not to draw you into the conversation. When we tag people, they don't actually get notified of it, correct? At least last I knew, it was not working.

Thanks for posting about proper Steemit etiquette though! A lot of new people just don't "get it," and I'm trying to help them avoid reputation damaging mistakes.

I think we should only tag if the person would not see it otherwise. Some of the apps will notify for this.

I had no idea it would pester people, so I will stop doing it unless it is absolutely vital to bring them into the conversation. Thanks for the wisdom and correction!

I tag people as a means of using their name to be polite and friendly. Never considered this would be seen as annoying, I guess we're all different! ;)

I found your post amusing to read, I'm sure many really resonate with it. I did a post today offering healing and said to comment if you'd like healing and got ' please read my blog and up-vote me'

I was planning on replying 'I am not an up-vote bot' but didn't!

Well done you on just flagging all irrelevant replies, I guess that does send out a message that they're not welcome.

Yes many notifications just started appearing on my phone yesterday, including mentions. I am hoping to learn how to turn it off.

I also liked to leave these as an organic link to other peoples accounts.

Despite all the warnings they keep on doing the same thing on not only one post but everywhere man! I have tried many times making many understand...some accepts but others are arrogant too!

These spam commenters are dwindling away i feel.

I am guilty of appreciating how nice or wonderful a post is, tagging which I thought was somehow badass, and saying that I upvoted. While I thought all the above were polite, you just educated me otherwise. I have spent most of the 40 days here reading posts on what to do and I forgot to find out what not to. Clearly, this is a different kind of social media and the learning curve has never been so steep.

I just see these things over and over. They add nothing to the conversation. Things on Steemit have a value and you need to consider if what you do is valuable enough to someone for them to vote on it.

good afternoon, myLord. I just upvoted your noble and saint content. :D

You're lucky to not get flagged for that laddie. I shall have words with you in Lisbon :P

These spam commenters are dwindling away i feel.

Sir, @steevc nice very post. Follow me i follows back. I am definitely not AI computer beep beep. Trust me.

For better results try my trading bot or resteem service.

I think I got them all. Oh yeah. Upvoted.

Flaggety flagging flagged for this violation!

Nooooooooooooo! C'mon bro. LOL

I'm not gonna invite you to my Steem birthday party!

I totally agree with you, these people make Steemit a bad place

Not necessarily making it that bad, but they are wasting their effort and my time.

From my point of view, the worst thing I've seen in Steemit since I joined a month ago is these disturbing comments

I think a lot of it is just misguided people desperately trying to make a cent, but there are some really malicious people spamming the system. We can educate the former and flag the latter.

What's the community norms when one come across these sort of spam comments - should one downvote or ignore?

It's up to you. I try to explain the problem to new people, but if I see they do it a lot then they may deserve a flag. I only flag with a few percent of a vote. You may not have that facility yet

I'm yet to downvote anybody, even though I've come across a few accounts that really deserve it, accounts that make extensive use of plagiarism. But I'm reluctant to stick my neck out, because I don't want to make enemies and risk my own reputation score.

That's okay. I'm established enough to take them on.

It's great to have senior members with that dedication to the Steemit community.

I tell people if I upvoted, resteemed, followed, and/or will tweet their post for a few days. Who knew that was insulting! The ways of steemit are highly mysterious. And I never get tired of hearing how little my upvote means! I love to read this and can't get enough.

Minnow power! It's not a thing.

This is my personal opinion. There are no fixed rules. I just think it's redundant to say you upvoted all the time. The important thing is to be interest, not needy. It's not about vote for vote. It's about good content that deserves a reward

I'm definitely not doing vote - for - vote since I only have so few for each day. I comment much more than voting each day, so if I do vote and resteem etc, I tell people. With the very little engagement and the overrunning of bots here, I think people would appreciate hearing from someone real. But I will reconsider this plan. So complicated here!

As I say, it's my opinion. I get some comments that just seem aimed at getting something from me and it gets boring. Just something to consider.

Hmm.. Do you go to their feeds? I don't get many comments like that, but if I do, I usually go check to see what they have and try to help them make less invasive comments if I can.

I would be unlikely to vote for them, but I would comment on their posts. It's not like my vote is worth anything as you pointed out.

Hopefully my advice will have more value since they are here and trying at least. The engagement and the number of actual people trying here is so low that I try to boost it where I can.

I will visit sometimes, but it's not always possible. I've helped a few to understand the issues with what they do

Yes, it definitely takes time - I find about half the people I talk to are just lost and need help. The other half are scheming so it's not worth the effort in those cases.

may i add some thing politely no typing while wearing no clothes or self pleasing , you follow me now

if you are being a supper star in hollywood, most of people wanna met yoy, try to get autograph. in steemit you similar kind of person with your steempower, so people try to get in touch with you, as he get some attention by your upvote.thanks for sharing.

I'm no star. The whales must get fed up with people begging. The best way to succeed here is by being interesting. BTW 'thanks for sharing' is another unnecessary remark that I see too often.

I guess I am guilty of three offences.. I often comment, nice post....use the @ tag and mention the fact that I upvoted. I didn't know that this is frowned upon, guess I have to better my ways :). Anyway, I enjoyed reading your tips, the post is well crafted and informative. Because I think that this post has value I have upvoted it for the max amount available to me. :).

You have to think about what gives your comment value. It should not just be about getting attention

Thanks for supporting esteemios, if I had received your article before entering SestemIt I would not join him. If this makes you happy, happy day.

Hi James,
Hope you and family are happy and well.

As you know I am new to social media and have made a few mistakes learning social media etiquette.

To Whom would I send a suggestion to, to suggest adding a disclaimer or warning at the time of signing up to Steemit definitions of Spam and possible consequences.

Maybe even a quiz?
A new steemit account could be forced to read a post on Spam and etiquette and pass a short quiz before getting their free account. what do you think?

Leaving for Aca in three weeks :)

Be well my friend!
Randall

A new Steemit account could be forced to agreeing with terms of Spam and Etiquette or be disallowed onto the platform until successfully completing a Spam/Etiquette test/quiz or being given a Steemit-TimeOut! A day for 2nd offence, two days for 3rd offence and so on.
Just a thought and possible solution.
Be well...

good point bro,,,,,,
