After my most recent post on some auction gold that I found..it made me remember another story. You can see my previous auction gold post here:
I was strolling through an outside flea market, just minding my own business, when this guy yells...."Hey man, you need to buy you some keys?" Surely I misheard that...but nope, he has a freakin' old style trunk, literally full of keys on keychains.
Part of me just wanted to start speaking Thai and say "No Englash, sorry" and run away. The @jbcoin side of me was lookin' for the profit margin in this train wreck.
I mean, it was a huge-ass trunk full of keys. What kind of sick key clepto Mo-fo collected a million sets of other people's keys? What's that all about?
I couldn't help myself, so I asked how much? "Fifty dollars my man". I just smiled. "Okay, how about twenty?"....I began my walk away... "Give me ten dollars"....So I just shake my head.
"Okay man, give me 2 bucks and I'll help you load it up". Deal. There is a shit ton of brass and copper in that trunk for 2 bucks. Plus my wife will be so thrilled that I brought home 2,000 other people's keys 😁
That evening I drank a beer and sorted keys, yep, old versus new.....copper versus brass. What fun!!
Then...suddenly without warning! A thin 10k gold band attached to a set of keys!! Whaaaattt?
This key sorting just got a whole lot more interesting!
I went on to find 7 more gold wedding bands, 10k, 14k, and one 18k.
8 gold rings inside a trunk of junk that I almost passed on!
Scrap haul for the copper and brass was $110.00. So it was worth my time. The old empty trunk was just free and my wife still uses it to store our extra blankets inside.
The 8 gold rings were bonus scores and taught me to always take a second glance at keychains thrown in boxes at auctions and sales!
Hope that you enjoyed my flea market gold story!
Please upvote, Resteem, and don't take people's keychains.
I definitely wasn't thinking that I would find anything worthwhile, for sure. This guy did house clean-outs, so you never knew what you would find. At the end of the day, he always got super low on prices, because he couldn't take the stuff back. Whatever remained went to the dumpsters, and the next week he had a new box truck full of "treasures".
I had two more nice pickups from him over the years. One was a huge box of old letters, bills, receipts etc. I enjoy old paper. I think I paid $7 for the box, and doubted I'd find much, it was a little too new (1970s). About halfway through sorting the box at home, I found an envelope marked "Save". Inside were 36 crisp $2.00 bills. Not worth much individually, but the $72 was nice!
Nice score! Would have guessed a bunch of keys could have such a nice pay out.
Thanks for reading @mrs-v!
cool story
its getting harder and harder to get those scores at garage sales and flea markets
Oh yeah, between eBay and smart phones, everything is just priceless now haha. I have very good luck at church rummage sales lately. Lots of older folks, with older stuff, all donated to the church, so prices are low so they don't have to haul it back home. Great old costume jewelry, occasional gold and sterling, and always nice books and tools.
My main collection is vintage pocket knives, so keep me in mind if you ever find any old ones. I like to restore and collect them.
Oh yeah, it is! Everyone is onto the hustle now. Good thing I found Steemit for my time :D
@getonthetrain you are hustling hard everyday !
Nice story and very good score. I have a friend that step in shit like that all the time. He bought an old book collection and found over $6,000 in the books. Go figure....thanks for sharing.🍺
I have heard the same @silverd510. I am always checking old books (esp Bibles). I've found one silver certificate, lots of old receipts and tickets used for bookmarks, some early prayer cards with nice art, but no high dollar notes (yet).
My friend was remodeling a rental house and found a fancy pink and white swirled, ladies glass cane inside of a plastered wall. It was very nice! The next day, he went back to the demolition and found almost $2,000 in cash and another $1,000 face value in silver coins in jars in that same wall. Almost all of the coins were from the teens and 20s. I had high hopes for finding a 1916d Mercury sorting through those with him, but none found.
I’ve been in the business for over 30 years and have never found anything worth value. That’s a good score!!! I do however have friends in the business that have made some unbelievable finds.🍺
Man you get some great finds!
Thanks @edthecanadian. Yep, that one was just dumb luck. My wife was not thrilled, to say the least, until after that mess was gone.
Oh wow, great score and a new tip to stick into my brain. Thanks, JB!
Thanks for reading!
greqat read buddy,
Were you in thailand? I didnt click the top link. lol
No, no. Lol
hahaha funny story and very informative! who would have thought a box full of keys could be so fruitful
Thanks @ejr! I could probably post an auction or flea market or eBay story every day for the next 10 years haha. I'm guessing that eventually I'd be the only one left reading them lol 😂
