Weight or collector? What kinda of stacker are you?

When I started my silver journey, I made alot of bad purchases, as I am sure most of you did.

Silvershield collections.

Are you a weight stacker or collector? When I first started I thought that I was going to be a collector, but quickly turned into a weight stacker. Now there is a couple of reason I decides to go into weight stacking.

First one, spot is spot, and thats probably what you will get for it when its time to sell. Trust me I understand that the price will skyrocket and it really wont matter what you paid for it, but wont it? Lets take ASE for an example. Right now you would be lucky to get a $1.00 over spot if you sold one. So if you took an ASE and compared it to a silver round. ASE would cost you $19.57 usd, with a buy back price of $17.87, so immediately you would loose $1.70 usd. Now lets take your average 1oz silver round, it would cost you $17.36 usd, with a buy back of $16.47, resulting in a loss of .89 cents usd.

So basically you would cut your looses in half by buying the silver round.

This is the main reason why I changed over to weight stacker. When the times come to sell, I believe you will be lucky to get spot, no matter what the coin is.

Now this is just my opinion, really doesnt amount to much, but what are your thoughts?

Are you a weight or collector stacker?

I started as a weight stacker, no doubt. However now I try to have half my stack be higher premium pieces as well as growing my weight side with near spot generic pickups. I like to be able to trade some premium stuff for a greater weight at a future time, as well as hedging against further market manipulation. I'm not really a collector myself but I like seeing my stack appreciate even when spot price stays stagnant. It's a micro-diversification haha. Great topic, cool post, thanks for sharing with us!

Thanks for the visit and comment. Sounds like your plan is working for you. Keep stacking.

When I get buyer's remorse, for paying a high premium, on that .999, that I just had to have, I will buy, a low premium, generic .999 or two, to "dollar cost average." I've really got it bad, but I really think it is going to pay off, in the long run. Maybe the short run. The Provident Prospector 1 oz Silver Round, is the coolest generic round.

Provident is my go to bullion dealer thanks for the visit and comment.

Silver Bullet - Silver Shield has a website, listing mintages, dates, variations etc... Some are very rare.

At today's spot price, of $16.57, Silver can only go down $16.57. How high can it go? You get the point?

I guess I'm a little of both. I love the SSG coins for the message that goes along with each coin. Anything else I purchase is determined by how close to spot the round is. Good post, interested in seeing how the rest of the stackers respond.

Thanks for the visit and comment. I try to get as close to spot as possible myself.

weight stacker all the way, I only pay a premium on rare silver coins, bullion coins should be purchased as close to as possible as the silver price.

Smart stacker, right here. Thanks for the visit and comment.

Weight. For my kids birthdays I usually buy them a cool looking coin but other than that I am into the rounds.

Me too, all about the weight. Thanks for the visit.

I buy 3-50 of around 12 coins every year for date runs and a few odds i like the look of so i would have to say im collector stacker but as im from the UK, its cheaper for me to buy a ASE/kooks/elephants over a round/bar because of the 20% vat we pay. If i buy from certain euro counties, i can get coins with a monetary attached vat free, vat is still paid on rounds/bars. So i guess i can say i stack for weight in a way :) Nice post :)

Dont know much about the VAT, but from what i see it sucks. Thanks for the comment

I still do both , i collect bullion coins as close to spot as my provenance allows, but there is this deep seated need in me to form collections, ive done it with stamps fossils LPs and now silver coins. I love quality well designed coins with low mintage and with a bit of meaning behind them.
However you stack, at the end of the day you are exchanging fiat toilet paper for real tangible assets, that is the most important factor for me

100% agree, as long as you are trading out of the fiat paper, its a win win for you. Thanks buddy.

Anyone who knows the price will skyrocket after they lose control of the manipulation should def be in for the weight. I do however also love junk silver because of it's efficient use as currency in the event of a collapse- wouldn't want to have to saw a ten ounce bar into pieces just to buy a loaf of bread.

Very good point, I try to keep 100oz of 40% silver half dollars but other than that its all about the weight. I will be going to buy me a metal saw blade for my saw today. This thing could collapse tomorrow and that saw blade would be a must. Appreciate the visit and comment my friend.

I try to collect as much silver as I can while purchasing a decent coin as well for a decent price.

At your age you are already a step ahead of 99% percent of society, you keep stacking my friend and have fun with it.

Thanks...Steem on ;)

I'm both :-) I started off a weight stacker, then evolved into a bit of a collector - at the end of the day, its the weight that counts, but nothing will get in the way of me and a nice coin.
Weight stacking is the way to go until you have a bit of weight, then start treating yourself.

I'm a hybrid stacker. I collect things I like and it happens to add weight. I make my purchases with my tip $ mostly so I'm not worried about my dollar cost avg too much. I say it's free money to me.. I used to just blow it on junk and now it's piling up into real worth

Resteemed btw, cheers

Hybrid stacker, i like it. Sounds like you plan is working. Tips are a great way to stack. Thanks for the visit and comment.

Check out my 1 oz silver bar stack i showed today in a post @raybrockman ..most i acquired at my LCS for very close to spot. I splurged on a few just to have a cool collection. Gotta keep it fun, I can't buy all maples or eagles but I do have a bunch of them aswell

i bought 30 or 40 old silver coins for the silver content but also for the value to collectors -- i also have a few 1 ounce coins but am not super devoted to getting a huge stack -am happy to have some

Bro you know what are the best kind of deal? To be able to buy numis coin at bullion prices 🙈 and sell them at numis price later. I am both a weight and collector stacker at the same time armed with knowledge of what are numis and bullion coin to capitalize on the best of both worlds. upvote for you man 😁

You are right, thanks for the comment and visit.

I starting stacking with the intention of weight bit that quickly faded, besides the few generic bars and rounds for that first while I've been very heaving into collecting and even slowly picking up some really high premium older year stuff and private minted stuff. I just can't get enough. But occasionally I still will add another 10oz generic bar.

Buy mostly for weight, British minted coins to avoid tax when I sell, now also looking at other coins that I just like the look of. I only buy one or two of them at most. Stacking when I can. I'm also putting a little each month into my Goldmoney account.

I stack for weight, but then I get bored !!! A few nice coins that are a bit different from the rest is really nice to have.

Hey RB.
I guess I'm a little of both. I started out young as a collector trying to fill up my Whitman Penny Books. As I grew older, I learned of the intrinsic value of silver and how it's really a store of wealth. Although I morphed into a "weight" stacker, I never lost my love for the beauty of the coins themselves.

It is for that reason that I will often pay hefty premiums to sometimes buy a "pretty" coin.....like Panda, Lunars, Kooks, Kangaroos. I also like the GSM rounds - very unique!

I guess you can say I'm a sucker for a pretty coin!

As long asbyour stacking. Stack what you like. By the way welcome to steemit. Yiu will find this platform very intresting and filled with silver stackers, if you ever have any question feel free to ask.

Both, I have gone through stages. Started in gov't issued, then bars. I have a bizarre fascination with "Trade Unit " rounds.

Both! More for weight, but finding as I go I'm becoming more of a collector :)

One thing I have noticed, through the years of collecting, premiums on many .999 government coins (Eagles, Maples and others) go up with age. In 1996, a 1996 American Silver Eagle, was around $10. Or $6 spot + $4 premium = $10. Generics, slightly less. Today, a '96 Eagle is $40 to $100 plus. Most Generics' premium, old or new, today, still $2 or less. So, in this case, would not, the $10 Eagle, worth $40, be better than a free Generic, worth $20.

Weight for me, in smaller units - I like divisibility.

I started collecting coins over 40 years ago. I'll post some interesting items here soon. I stopped as an adult, but never sold what I had collected, as a kid/teen.
About 8 years ago, I re-started my 'hobby' again with American Silver Eagles, U.S. pre-1964 coins, Kennedy Half dollars and Mercury Dimes.
Along the way, I gained appreciation for some limited mintage Silver rounds with interesting designs, such as Silver Bullet Silver Shield.
My stacking position is based on Spot Price and also availability at the local coin shop.

  • When very low, like last week, down to $15.50 or so, I'm looking at just bulk / weight. Possibly, 5 ounce bar or 10 ounce bar, if available.
  • When Spot Price is doing its normal dance up / down, I take the time to select interesting rounds / bars, if available - otherwise just clean, nice rounds that are close to uncirculated.

Thanks for the comment, cant wait to see some of your stack. Keep stacking my friend.

At the moment i'm stacking weight with britannia's for 2 main reasons..

  1. they are a cheap way of stacking government mint coins
  2. they are capital gains tax free when you sell

I also buy Perth mint coins and panda's to flip after a few years and use any profits to buy more newly minted Perth coins and extra brits for the stack

I like junk silver. It is easily recognizable and its silver content is known. I buy not necessarily as an "investment" but if I need to buy something to eat in a worst case scenario. Most people will not recognize a silver round from Johnson Matthey but they will absolutely recognize a 1962 Roosevelt dime.

Yes the price of silver will be over and over in the following months
