The Big Day Arrives! 1 Gig Fiber Internet!! But There is Trouble in Paradise...

in #steemstem7 years ago (edited)

After about two weeks of waiting, the day finally came. A pair of white vans appeared outside my home and instead of the FBI or something, it was the internet fairy! Do fairies deliver internet? I feel like maybe it would be goblins. Okay, the internet goblins. It is decided.

Installation, somewhat alarmingly, involved drilling a hole in the side of the house. But the electronics box that interpets the fiber optic signal stays with the house even if I were to move out, so it's a long term thing, which makes me feel less squeamish about it.

That guy sure is a lot more comfortable leaning a ladder on a power line than I would be. I guess he's done it enough by now that it doesn't spook him. Maybe don't try this at home, kids? Or do, I'm not the boss of you and death is a surprisingly affordable alternative to life these days. From a fiscal standpoint at least, there's a lot to recommend it.

Here it is all hooked up and working. After a bit of hair pulling I got everything set the way I wanted to in the router GUI. One tiny snag, though...Here's what I get when I plug my laptop into the modem via ethernet cable:

Meanwhile, here's what I get over wifi:

Kind of a big fucking difference, and a severe problem for me because this house isn't wired for ethernet. It's looking like I won't be able to get 99% of the speed I'm paying for without hooking my computer up to the modem directly, and it's two rooms away.

I think there's some kind of solution to this. Like a wireless box I can plug one ethernet cable into, and then a matching second box I plug another ethernet cable into which creates a high speed bridge between them. I am just unsure specifically what I need to buy.

The answer might eventually just be to downgrade my service to 45Mbps which will still be overkill compared to what I am actually able to use over wifi. But that's a last resort. Before I do that, I'm going to investigate solutions, hopefully ones which don't involve stringing dozens of feet of obtrusive ethernet cable all over the house.

EDIT: Problem #2 has arisen: The wifi connects and disconnects over and over. No idea what causes this but hopefully wiring my PC directly to the router will fix it, which is what I have decided to resort to.

Stay Cozy!

Sort:

938 mbps is a monster, you can download the whole internet itself with that speed.

the guy with the ladder should start perform in a circus, I have never seen before such ladder techniques from electricians.

Cool bro alex. Hopefully with this facility can make the activity becomes easier. For speed is very fast. Have fun. The facilities I use for internet are wifi id and quota from phone provider. in india internet cabel is rarely used. but its stability is very good

how much such service cost and why do you need so fast internet, I have only 100mb download

$80/mo, but I split it 3 ways with roommates, so it's $26.60/mo for each of us.

I think it's a good price, I pay around $50 for 100mb

expensive or not brother,

You are right @alexbeyman. Very far difference between using wired internet and wifi. Like heaven and earth. How can it be like that? In my area wifi speed can reach 1.5 Gbps.

congratulations @alexbeyman im wondering how that guy managed to stay on the ladder i have never seen any guy staying on the ladder like that

Congratulations @alexbeyman. Definitely your productivity increases with the new high-speed internet network.

Lol, I was wondering how the guy managed to stay on the ladder then i saw the powerline and just as you said maybe death is indeed a good alternative to life, lol but I am not ready. The speed difference between the wifi and the ethernet is kinda alarm, is there no booster you can you or call those guys to come check it up?

Dude I am so Jelly 1Gb with 1ms ping times. That is like the transfer starts before you click on it.

Wow, with download speed of 938.67 Mbps and upload 883.39 Mbps would be very nice @alexbeyman. That's enough to keep you locked up in the house all day. Enjoy the new internet alex.....

Exactomundo. Wifi routers have maximums that are far lower than hard wires... I think there are good options out there, but they cost more.

Also, yeah. Leaning a ladder against a power wire is...scary. I think? I guess? They probably know more about it than we do, so maybe it's perfectly safe.

I know the excitement of the internet fairy arriving! Uk has one of the crappiest internet and out of all of the providers I was stuck for almost 2 years with the worst one, not having internet 10-15 days a month sometimes.. As for the wi fi speed problem I hope you sort it out! It's a shame to let all that speed go to waste!

I think the guy on the ladder is pretty much off his rocker. It is obviously Garbage Pick up day, (note curbside garbage can), the garbage people are in big trucks, they don't have that great of visibility, and well some of them ca be assholes at times, like say the previous homeowner had a really heavy can. They are pissed off, not thinking straight, then they see a ladder at the next house, boom bang crash concrete splash. Line man down.

Me I'd go for the fast cheap solution. The box sits just above the baseboard trim, run a wire on top of it to where you need it to go.

@alexbeyman,
Dude don't kidding me 938 Mbps :O I got 1.3 Mbps :D This is huge, I wish my country will evolve into this soon!

Cheers~

America is actually pretty far behind Europe and east Asian countries in broadband. It's both faster and cheaper in those places than it is here because of our telco monopolies pocketing government money they were supposed to use to build out fiber networks.

Truth.

Out here in no mans land I can either pay $50 a month for 1Mbps DSL, $65 for 5 Mbps with a WISP or way too much for way too little on Satellite

Meanwhile I only have to pay around 30 dollars for a 50-100Mbps WiFi even though I live in the middle of a forest in Finland.

I want 50-100Mbps :(. It makes it hard to work remote when I can either have my laptop on the VPN or my VOIP phone on at any one time.

@alexbeyman,
I also heard lots of bad news about my country major telecommunication providers! Moreover, government needs to keep us stay away from internet! Coz they hate Social Medias and so on... I don't think they will let us evolve into this high techs in soon! Do you have any download limit?

Cheers~

I think there's a solution to it too, you don't have to downgrade. Unfortunately I just don't know what it is...lol. Well congratulations anyways.

P. S. The guy working on that powerline must be the bravest guy in the World, at least from my point of view...lol. Getting electrocuted is definitely one of my biggest fears

It's great to read that the fairies of the internet have already arrived to put fiber optic in your house and sad to see that your router does not support so much speed.

Whatever you do, do not go to technical support because they will take your eyes out.

Alex I hope you solve your problem fast.

This guy leaning his looong ladder is crazy. Here I n NY I’ve never seen anything like this. Your internet is pretty fast, but wireless is too slow. There are some kind of boosters or this company providing Internet should have better routers.

I'll say he has a death wish but it's still a crazy way to die.

Purchase a better WIFI router and just hook it to that with it's ethernet, or a WIFI Access Point.

You won't get Gigabit through WIFI as there is no such rated tech, but you can get significantly higher speed than you are.

Something like NETGEAR R6700 Nighthawk AC1750 Dual Band Smart WiFi Router, Gigabit Ethernet (R6700)

You can go for higher end models in that series if your needs are greater than what that delivers.

EDIT: I've also been told before those cables are rated for either 3000 or 5000 lbs. I don't remember exactly as I have part of a telephone pole hanging from one of my lines behind my house where they cut down most of a pole but left a pretty big chunk of it just dangling in the air.

Good job. Sucses mr alex. I am use free wifi for Internet. Coffee Shop and wifi id. I have not Internet in my house

Alex - Wifi & Wired connections have big gap of upload & downloads... How much cost you for this Fiber connection?

+W+

$80 a month. However I split it three ways with my roommates, each of us pays $26.60.

What the hell how is that guy not dead :D I wouldn't be doing that

Good Lord, 934 Mbps. Is this what internet speed you get in America. You must be kidding Alex. This is fucking insane, I haven't seen something like this. Our internet speed can reach to a Max of 5 Mbps.

I here my country use this antenna is a receiver of wifi, which incidentally is far away the antenna that gives this service, I only have 512kbps of internet speed and I am happy imagine that you have all that speed of internet that you have.

adaptador-wifi-usb-tp-link-tl-wn8200nd.jpg

938 Mbps that's freakin huge
I can barely get 10 Mbps and I think I have fast internet.

Thats lot faster i had 100 mbps speed and i am in fantasy thinking that this is the fastest but you have showm me what is the reality.

wow,,what a speed ,,i just surprised to see this ,,,its amazing of 938 mbps
,,,,its me who am keep a speed of only 1.5mbps,,,so cool

This an impressive publication. Almost everybody in this century loves to surf on the internet. Fibre optic cables are also know for their high speed and reliability. But with a speed like that, boy! I could download all the videos on YouTube ...haha. I'm just hoping it is able to make entry into West Africa.

Nice post mate, Wireless box as you said should fix the issue... Do your due diligence before buying though.

Good job. Sucses mr alex. I am use free wifi for Internet. Coffee Shop and wifi id. I have not Internet in my house

wow uplode and download speed super, its very good

Finally, your waiting for two weeks is finished also Alex. Now it's time to improve work ethos through internet. I can not wait to see the results of this change. Congratulations on @alexbeyman.

Steady Internet speed .. in my place the speed is not up that much. Unless I use wifi id at the coffee shop

Check the speeds again, please NOTE the server you are testing against changed for the WiFi and may have been slow do to being in Canada thru major hub??

Wow that's a massive difference between the wifi and ethernet connection,

The kit you mention are called powerline adapters (in the UK) and are a great bit of kit plug one in next to your router then it injects the internet into the ring mains and you can pull either another wifi hotspot or ethernet port anywhere you plug an addition powerline adapter in.

Standard ones are fairly cheap these days but i'd look at the passthrough option if your short of plugs and keep an eye on its advertised through put for mbs as they can go from 200-1300+mbs.

I've been using them for a couple of years and are great for the smart Tv's for streaming, games consoles where high speeds and low pings are king!

Hope you get it sorted 👍

Thats a lots of speed never experienced such speed thanks for letting us know.

I have done the ladder on a wire thing. Takes some getting use to! Hardwiring is always the best!

This is faster than anything sir thanks for letting me know sir.you are in heaven with this speed.
