Building A Biometric Database For An Entire Country

in #technology8 years ago (edited)

According to a recent report from HSBC, titled the Trust In Technology report, at the moment India is said to be leading globally when it comes to the adoption of biometric technology.

The report indicates that people in India are about 3x more likely to use bioidentification systems in order to identify themselves, like fingerprint scanning or iris recognition.

When it comes to adopting biometric systems, Asia and the Middle East are ahead of the trend compared to Western nations. The reason for this? It's said that the people in those areas have a greater understanding of the technology and more optimism and trust about using it.

The biometric trend is being adopted and pushed not only by government, but a number of private corporations around the world are also looking to embrace the technology as well.

One government department in Delhi, India, recently started requiring its employees to submit to a bioidentification system in order to have their attendance tracked. They say that they have been having issues with attendance and so having folks log in via a biometric system is their solution to that problem.

Those who don't use the system to properly mark their attendance are allegedly going to be met with disciplinary action over the matter.

They aren't the only government workers on the system either. It's reported that tens of thousands of government officials are being required to sign in with the biometric system and their attendance is even listed online and accessible to the public. They plan for program to be expanded and included every worker, right down to the level of district subdivisions.

India is presently said to be working on building a biometric database for the entire nation, roughly 1.3 billion people. It's referred to as the Aadhaar program.

The biometric system which is being marketed as an identity program, is looking to collect the fingerprints and iris data from every single person in the country. And at the moment, it's estimated that about 9 out of 10 Indians have already registered with the system. Along with their registration they were given a 12-digit number and that number is able to be verified when they confirm their biometric identification by scanning their eye or finger.

It started out as an initiative to keep track of welfare waste and supposedly offer the poor a method for being able to prove their identity. But now, you allegedly need to be registered if you want to pay your taxes, or collect your pension, and access other state benefits. It started out as voluntary but it isn't any longer; it's now viewed as compulsory. The national biometric program first began focusing mostly on government applications, but it has quickly spread to the financial sector and airport screening.

In my opinion, I would support the use of biometric system as it is convenient and most important is , secure. There are more and more daily issue a person need to deal with as the technology level grow. And dealing with issues with traditional password or security ID may be dangered by the action from hackers, while biometric ID requires yourself for approval, avoiding the possibility to be hacked.

I support the use of it voluntarily. And this system is still susceptible to hacker attacks and things going wrong :/ , and if your biometric id gets compromised it's a much bigger and worse issue than if your generic password for some system simply gets stolen. Much worse.

Biometrics are less secure than passwords -- this is why

Biometrics Are Coming, Along With Serious Security Concerns
https://www.wired.com/2016/03/biometrics-coming-along-serious-security-concerns/

lt will happen globally, it's just a matter of time. I think that they are waiting for the baby boomers to pass away as it would be this generation that would be the most against it. The security concerns are valid. In my line of work, I'm waiting for the day in which they tell me that it's mandatory to comply. They will roll it our to the poorer nations first that are more dependent on government resources and then try to bankrupt the other countries in order to force more reliance and compliance on the state.

This is just crazy, wonder when this will be implemented in the u.s.

That would be difficult.

Wow imagine having to do biometrics for over 1.3 billion people! Great find @doitvoluntarily - it's always a guarantee learning something useful and very valuable from each of your posts!

AWESOME Followed and upvoted ..!

Biometric is a big trend, I don't think we can avoid it in the near future.

has a feeling of the police state ....you WILL do it or else !

Its good to see how technology is changing our lifes. Thank for sharing this with us.

There will be a lot of advantages to be gained by adopting this system.

This information makes me think of the end times we are living in. Example: Revelation 13:16-18King James Version (KJV)

16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:

17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

Somehow, I knew this was coming =) If I hadn't found it already mentioned, I was going to.

I will point out that this technology doesn't place a mark on people at all, merely looks at our unique marks we already have, and uses them.

However, it does seem that the technology is filling the balance of the prophecy, in that it is being used to control personal financial activity. India has recently withdrawn from circulation the bill most commonly used in transactions there, claiming it was fighting tax evasion, black markets, etc..

I am more and more alarmed that people are willing to accept more and more impositions on their liberty, which are neither necessary, nor even beneficial.

Thanks for beating me to the punch!

I find this horrible, invasive, and unnecessary. The security implications are staggering, both in terms of keeping populations passive, and the contemplation of identity theft.

I want to say 'This can't happen here!', but I know I'd be wrong. It can, and there are efforts to make it happen. The fact that it can is why it needs to be prevented. If it couldn't, then we'd need to do nothing.

The problem is that whether we want to or not, biometrics are already in use to identify us. That's what facial recognition software does. They may not try to impose using thumbprints on us, or retinal scans, but those are only two types of biometrics, many of the others, such as brainscans or DNA, simply can be used even without our knowledge.

Thanks for this post, and scaring my socks off.

Nice article! Definitely going to follow you love the content. Biometrics could really help in many areas.

voluntarily it sure could ;)

This is about control.

If you read carefully, you will see workers and government employees are being forced into bio-metric identification. fail to comply and face the consequences.

The other reason for adoption in places like Dubai is a combination of Muslim's covering their entire heads, so only the eyes are visible to scan and the belief that taking photos is somehow "Stealing a person's soul".

So this 21st Century technology is gaining acceptance by people whom are literally stuck in the 14th Century.

Irony is so Ironic.

very good post @doitvoluntarily ...science really adds value to our communities ...great post...upvoted

Biometrics are more valuable in Asia and the Middle East because those are the countries with governments attempting to control their population. The U.S. and Europe has all the information they need through voluntary sharing (SMS records, blogs, email, social media, facial recognition). The U.S. and Europe don't have secret police out to keep their people in line like Asian countries do. The "investment" in biometrics by these governments is not a good thing.

I really like that

I think it is one of the best initiative taken by Indian government. Earlier people used to carry 4-5 documents for identity verification but because of aadhar program people now only need to show their aadhar ID to quickly complete their verification process.

just a shame they want to try and make people's lives more difficult by forcing them to sign up for this program if they do not want to. Good ideas shouldn't require threats/force 👌 😊

Point taken it shouldn't be imposed but the people who don't want to register are hesitant because they don't want government to keep a check on their income source and tax liability. Tax theft and so called "Black Money" is one of the biggest problem in India, so in a way government is trying best to curb this menace.

I don't think it's a big problem to try and keep money that you earn. What right does anyone else have in claiming a portion of that money? But i'm not interested in arguing on the ethics of taxation. The state of course does most of the things it does for control and not for the betterment of our lives. There are huge privacy issues with such a biometric system, and one would certainly never want to find themselves in the middle of a nightmare scenario of having had their biometric identification stolen or compromised. The system should not be forced on anyone, simple as that.

I'm so glad you said this! I'm rather horrified at the idea of a biometric system like this being manditory in Canada.

they'll have a much more difficult time convincing folks in the West lol it'll be fun and terrifying to watch all at the same time lol

Who wouldn't want 0% tax but then there has to be some revenue source for the government to take the economy forward...I agree states are not utilizing public funds the way they should be utilizing...corruption is there too...to your 2nd point privacy issue and identification theft is really a big issue and should only be implemented if state can take full ownership of the security...let's see hope for the best :)

It is not the government's role to take the economy forward. That is for private individuals and private businesses. As for the state taking full ownership of security... well, governments have a poor record of that as well!

yes it is individuals and private businesses who take it forward, gov just impedes the process

they aren't taking it forward.. they impose violence and coercion on a daily basis when it comes to new people trying to better their lives and make a business for themselves, try to raise themselves out of poverty. They still have cannabis prohibited even though it could provide benefit to millions... they engage in unjustified wars with that money and they use that money to violate natural rights of their citizens... their hard earned money goes toward corrupt debt owed to central banks.....a good/ ethical system or even civilized at the very least would be one that is funded voluntarily :) not with coercion. So what they have now isn't even civilized on the most basic level.

you sold me on cannabis prohibition :D nothing more to debate

Well said!

I am convinced that technologies like the blockchain are making not only government obsolete, but markets. In a world where all production is automated, where AI keeps the grass watered, the food free of bugs and drones deliver it to your home, there is no actual need for capital, or the inequities that markets create.

I'm not talking about communism, but a world where work is not necessary, income is useless, and all production has no cost.

This is not something those with a pathological need to be better than others are comfortable with, and there are worse psychopaths, such as those that need to have power over others, like rapists, sadistic torturers, and murderers.

Thankfully, the technology that will bring about this post market economy is just a matter of time and engineering. The real problem will be political, and ending power over people.

We can be free, and the day comes when we will be.

Thanks!

Again, the government needs to ensure that they have their slice, eh?

nice post. But im not a fan of putting my information out there.. hackers can hack with given time. Cause u cant tell what they can do with the information now a days.

This biometric database will be the future of the identity of people, and I'm %100 sure about it! Thanks for sharing this awesome post, @doitvoluntarily. Easy to read and really interesting!!

wow this is really a mind blowing post, big thumbs up and when will this be implemented in U.S, feel like we are so behind in terms of biometric tech.... :(

The Aadhaar program in India has gone much farther than just a direct benefit transfer scheme.

Aadhaar is used as a 2nd Factor Authentication

You can make payments using only Thumb - as Aadhaar card (social security number) is linked to bank accounts

Adhaar is also linked to KYC database
the eKYC has reduced the documentation (lengthy paper process) and reduced time from some days to some minutes

The government is taking every step to securely manage the database for 1.2 billion Indians, it has organized numerous hack-a-thons for companies to participate and attempt to break open...

Now, the government is planning to tackle issues of black money by linking aadhaar to income tax....

Technology + Conscience has a long future

following you now.. :)

Remember those words, "It started out as voluntary." When can we expect this insane invasion of our personal data to come to a city near us? Already, many companies require ID badges necessary to scan in for time-clocks or entrance to secure buildings. How can you fight a system when your job is dependent on compliance? Many people use this technology on their phones. Big Brother is watching you and biometric systems are the easiest way for them to track everything you do...
