Thanks for joining me in my adventures. This blog is dedicated to travels off the beaten path. You won't find my review of Disney World here, but you might just discover a new way to explore your world. If you're a fan of the road less traveled, I think you'll like what we have in store today.
In the little mountain ski village of Radstadt, flat land is at a premium. The residents make a point to fill their gardens with beautiful flowers and edible plants. The city wall seen in the background has stood for hundreds of years, and is now ringed with beautiful gardens. Follow me for a quick tour.
This person has filled their garden with just flowers, although I think I see some herbs peeking out in the bottom left corner of the photo.
Here you can see the plots of several people. The gardens are all the same dimensions and stretch all along this side of the city wall.
This garden contains both vegetables AND pretty flowers. I think that's kohlrabi, although I'm not entirely sure.
The gardens also have many fruit trees scattered about. The trees are all old and well-taken care of. I was tempted to reach out and grab a piece...but I didn't.
Here is a top-down view of a couple pear trees and apple trees that have been trained to grow along a lattice placed on the old city wall. The owners also planted rose bushes to add a splash of color.
Here we have a different type of garden. Instead of placing cut flowers on the graves of loved ones, Austrians plant flower gardens in remembrance. What a lovely and lasting idea!
Thank you for joining me in this stroll through the garden. Do you have a garden? Drop me a pic in the comments below. If you'd like to learn how you can tour gardens of the world, find me at Travel Life Services.
Happy Travels!

Thank you for sharing these beautiful photos of how Austrians keep their gardens. I like the natural look of these gardens, with a bit of everything planted together. I also like the idea of planting flower gardens in cemetaries rather than leaving cut flowers.
Thanks for stopping by! I like how planting a flower garden in a cemetery continues the circle of life - in contrast to cut flowers which have their lives ended.
I MUCH prefer the road less traveled! What lovely photos. I wish I had the patience and the talent for flowers. I love all the colors and just seeing the veritable paintings that gardens like this create!
Thank you for sharing such wonderful photos!
Thanks for stopping by! One thing I really like about flowers is that you can plant them (on a day in which you have lots of motivation) and then let Mother Nature do pretty much the rest of the work. You just have to get the right flowers. Morning Glories are a perfect example of this.
Instead of kohlrabi I believe that is beets with mint growing next to them. And I must say you have more will power than for I don't think I could resist a taste of ripe fruit. I can almost smell the fruity aroma. Love your pictures.
Hiiiiiii! I'm so glad that you dropped by. I sure do miss those Russian Red lilies. Thanks for sharing a picture of them. 😀 I thought beets were root vegetables. These guys are certainly not growing underground. Have I been lied to about the true nature of beets my entire life? This changes EVERYTHING.
I love seeing gardens (yards here in the states) put to good use. In most neighborhoods here there are rules against planting food-type plants in the front yard. After all, we have to maintain that well-manicured American look obtained by weed-free grass--grass that sucks up water, is often doused with weed killers, and provides nothing of actual value. At least in Texas, the state passed a state law that overrides local rules so that we can do xeroscaping. It can still be a struggle though to get it by the petunia partrol.

You know, I never considered that my front yard garden might be against the local laws. I live in Ohio and wanted to take advantage of every bit of our short growing season, so I planted tomatoes, peppers, kale, Brussels sprouts, and leeks in my front yard. I added some dahlias for a bit of color. Anyway, I think the overall effect is quite pretty. It seems strange that communities would legislate that sort of thing.
I also don't understand our obsession with grass. You are quite right about it not contributing significant value. I'm currently encouraging the clover in my lawn to take over the grass. I have faith! 😀

The place looks really nice at those photos and I agree, graves are more pretty this way, with lots of live flowers and plants.
Thank you. 😀 I'd like to see a bunch of wild flowers and pretty plants on my grave. It seems so fitting. Hopefully that's still a long way off though.
The weather, sights, plants..everything was great. A lot of colorful pics for one day
Thanks! I'm glad you stopped by. 😀
Lovely place, thanks for showing it to us!
You're welcome! Thanks for stopping by!
My pleasure.
Those are beets, my granny use to plant them. Lovely pictures @mattifer 😊
Thanks! Beets, huh...? That was my first thought when I saw them, but I dismissed that thought because I thought beets grew underground. My whole world is different now. 🤣

Hey @mattifer
Beautiful photos. I love the shot of the mountains in the background.
Thanks for sharing with us.
Cheers, Gaz.
Howdy! Thanks for dropping by!
Hahah..like the introductory part. The best thing one can do is to explore new place rather than wasting time in common place. You will enjoy in exploring new ..👌

This is really beautiful! I loveeeee gardens and plants, I have some of my own but I'm an amateur at gardening, hope I get to share some nice photos in the near future 😊 landed homes are the best, we're now renting in a high rise building so the only place for planting is our small balcony. Still, it's always a pleasure watching the greens grow.
Thanks! Balcony gardens can be really beautiful too. I'd love to see pics of what you've got growing so far.
