Quick post to add some info in response to @dollarvigilante youtube live stream...

First, I'm glad he did this live stream. I believe it was good for the steemit community, and good for showing people how to come to and use steemit.

Mining: Witnesses do not mine. There actually is no mining in the traditional sense anymore. A fixed amount of steem is added to the ecosystem every day. The closest thing to mining is simply using the platform. You are mining it by posting, commenting, and voting. This is a huge deal. You don't have to worry about massive electricity or how many MHASHes your rig can produce. You can mine here as good as anyone else just by using the platform with any PC, Web Browser, phone, tablet, etc. You don't need to purchase a data center to rule mining. You just need to be involved and post interesting things.

Photos: There are a lot of easy ways to add photos now. You can drag and drop them, you can copy and paste them directly into the post. You can also select them...

New people... "Can I get into trouble for using images I find searching on the web?" Just give credit where credit is due. I usually add a line that says something like Source: I got this image from here at the bottom of my image. Some people just credit it in the beginning or ending of their post. You technically won't get into trouble, but there are people in the community that try to monitor plagiarism and people getting rewarded for work they did not create. If you do not properly credit your sources they may down vote your posts which can ding your reputation and reduce how much you earn. So simply give credit to where you get things from if they are not your original work and you'll be fine.

Topics: - Post on anything that interests you. Be open and genuine. It may take some time but you will begin to get people interested in your posts. I recommend not worrying about the path to making the most money. That tends to be a path to frustration and disappointment. Instead post about what interest you and be happy with whatever comes your way. Have fun, and if you keep at it you will make money while having fun. If you focus too much on how much you are or are not making you'll likely not have as much fun.

EDIT: Not Safe for Work: NSFW Topics and images: - We have a very open community. This includes some children. If you post anything that includes subject matter that you do not feel a child should see in some minds, and or something that is very blatantly visually violent or sexual then make sure one of your five tags for your post is NSFW. This will hide the immediate visibility of your post. People will see it is there but they will have to either choose to REVEAL it, or they will need to set their settings so they always see such posts. This is not censoring you, as your post is there, but you are giving people the OPTION of whether they want to see that type of content or not.
Here is an example of one of my NSFW posts and what it looks like until it is revealed...

Welcome to steemit.com, busy.org, and esteem.

Thanks for the additional value. I got some good info from the webinar/stream. My STEEMIT was going down from yesterday, so I though you gave your coins away when you share and upvote, post etc, but I learned it is fluctuations in price.

I did just think about "duplicate content" and content you didn't create. Plagiarism. Was wondering if one could do the exact thing you described, then realized that it will not get upvoted (probably) so it won't be worth it.

Just my 2c

Worse than not get up voted. If someone takes claim for the work someone else did, and does not credit them they very well might get down voted, which takes potential earnings away, and can lower the reputation of your account.

Oh! There is downvoting? Didn't know that!

It is the flagging he mentioned in the webinar. I recommend not using it unless you absolutely need to. Taking money away from people seems to have a larger psychological impact than giving it to them.

I can't force you to follow my suggestions... but my suggestions RE: the down vote are to do it only for:

Plagiarism, Spam, or obvjous abuse (calling abusive names, etc)

It is that little FLAG in the upper right corner.

Please don't flag content simply because you don't like it. If you don't like it, then don't vote for it. That's pretty simple. They won't make money from you. At least you give people who have an interest in that topic a chance to up vote things they are interested in.

We need to be an inclusive community. So if you don't like something... move on.

There is also a MUTE feature. You can MUTE a person by visiting their profile and you'll no longer see their posts, comments, replies. So if someone is truly trolling you (disagreeing does not mean trolling) then you may want to MUTE them. Really we don't have many problems with this on steemit, but that could change as more and more people come here.

Thanks for this @dwinblood
I really enjoyed Jeff, but this is added value to people new to the site.

I'm glad it helped. That's why I did it. :)

Another great post! So much to learn and yet very simple and straight forward! Much appreciated.

Great that you are doing this Jeff... this is what free market advocates and anarchists do. Help people help themselves.

I'm glad Jeff did it as well. Though I am not Jeff. :) I made this to compliment his post and answer some of the things I saw people asking on his, and to correct a few things from the live stream.

Thanks Jeff, I was a participant in your live webcast today ...wasn't fast enough though to get any free steem !! .. but never mind, the info was worth a whole lot more and you did read out a comment I had made ! Thank you for sharing and giving, trying to help people. I am the 'potter' here on steemit community ( or one of them), no doubt there are others. By coincidence I also do the 9pm-3pm fast ! ..cheers :)

I am not Jeff. I am just someone that watched his live stream and wrote this companion piece to correct some things and to answer some questions I saw people asking in the chats.

He likely won't see this comment. I linked to his post in the first line of my post.

Hey I am sorry ! I am new here like many of us perhaps and still learning the ropes ! ... while I have your attention do you have any good tips for a newbie steem - er, thx

  • Be genuine.
  • Be respectful of others, even the people that treat you bad. Don't stoop to their level. (*not too much of a problem here yet though)
  • Write about anything you enjoy writing.
  • Don't focus on the money aspect. It will do well sometimes, and suck other times. If you focus on the money during those sucky times you'll not be enjoying yourself as much. Best not focus on it. Just do what you want and when they do well great, if they don't the key is you are having fun and some CEO is not getting rich off of your content.
  • Don't use the down vote simply because you don't like a topic.
  • The few times I've really been open about who I am and thought I would be ridiculed for something I said the community was actually very supportive and those posts did well. So be genuine. Show us YOU. Don't try to be someone else.
  • If you see someone else post a topic that does well, don't rush out and try to write something in the same topic, unless it is because they inspired some questions or ideas that were not covered in their posts. Clones don't do well, and it usually only happens when you are focusing on money rather than having fun.
  • Don't beg for money and votes. I've seen people write about something bad happening like losing their house and we support them. Yet if a person frequently writes similar posts they start to not be genuine and people stop listening. So again... be genuine.
  • If your posts make nothing or very little... remind yourself that on facebook, reddit, twitter, etc they ALWAYS make you nothing.

Thanks for writing ! taking the time, I appreciate the tips.
ALB ( All The Best)

Welcome to steemit. Stick with it, and help us change the world. :)

Thank you for this valuable information!

Thanks for reading my comments and using my questions in this follow-up!

No problem. Thanks for asking the question. Sorry I didn't remember to credit you. Comments were flying all over the place during this live stream. I'm actually glad you replied so you can get credit.

I agree with the part about frustration. Many tend to give up in the first few days.

I am very sure this is not a get rich quick scheme! You need to build a following that like your stuff, regularly. My YouTube friend (full-time) posted to "fields of crickets", ie 1-2 views for 12 months. Now he gets 70k views and makes BANK after 2 years+ takes a while!

So far it seems people that put forth effort here actually make more than on youtube and faster. I'm not talking Pewdiepie type millions, but the average youtube author like your friend tends to make more here. What is even cooler is you can do both. Make it for youtube, then share it here with some additional comments and such, and as long as you are engaged with the community here and not doing fire and forget posts (posting, but not engaging in comments) you can get the best of both worlds.

That is probably true. I haven't been here more than a few days, (I think posting for maybe 1 or 2 days). I am sure i'll notice how things go as you engage more in the community.

Yeah we've had a few youtubers post their analysis...

interesting post.
