Ausbitbank Witness Update 20/6/17 (HF19 in 3 hours!)

in #witness7 years ago (edited)

We're now in the final 3 hours before the Steem network upgrades to "Equality" v0.19.0 .

I can feel the tension and uncertainty in the air !

This week I've gained over 100 new voters, some with decent SP holding but not quite enough to advance another rank yet.

I now have 408 witness votes and I'm at rank # 27 :D

Witness node operations

This week I upgraded my node to the latest release version of steemd from the release candidate version I had been using.
I temporarily disabled my signing key using @furions conductor toolkit while I upgraded using the latest steem-in-a-box from @someguy123 .

It took a little longer then I expected to get my node back online, and I made a stupid mistake copying from my own outdated notes - I re-enabled using the wrong signing key causing my node to miss a block anyway.

I facepalmed, fixed my fail and since then it hasn't had any issues at all running the new software since.

  • 1 missed blocks this week (10 ever) .
  • I'm now witnessing an average of 52 blocks each day .

Price feed and current network parameters

  • I publish an unbiased price feed - last update was $2.220 SBD / STEEM .
  • SBD interest rate remains steady at 0% - to discourage hoarding whilst SBD is overvalued
  • Account creation fee remains at 0.2 STEEM - attempting to reduce signup cost (info)
  • Maximum block size remains at 131,072 - to lower the SP requirements to transact (more info).

Steem Dollars still trading above $1

Steem Dollars continue to be in high demand, currently priced at $1.75 USD per SBD .

I'd still really like us to attempt timcliff's proposed solution to restore the $1 SBD peg (TLDR: Reverse Conversion) .

Steemians should be taking advantage of these higher prices and sell SBD above face value while you can.

Do not use the internal convert option in your wallet for SBD's at this time - you will get a better deal on exchanges.

You should also avoid doing 100% Steem Power posts at this time, you will make more money if you use the 50/50 option and then trade the SBD you get for Steem.

On the upcoming hardfork

The next hardfork is scheduled for: Tue, 20 Jun 2017 15:00:00 UTC

The upcoming tweaks to vote power and the daily vote target/rate will change the way both users and bots curate on the site - and it's extremely hard to predict what the trending page and payouts will look like in the upcoming days/weeks .

I don't expect it to be immediately devastating like the last major fork was because the reward pool will remain intact .

However past story payouts could potentially see major changes - if you have mostly whale support your payout may drop, if you have a lot of minnow/orca support they may rise.

Since I've been blessed with delegated SP I've been really enjoying my increased influence here and I think I've voted fairly and used that influence to reward a huge amount of people.

Having a lot of SP means you can vote with a low vote strength and still make a worthwhile impact on payouts but for a larger amount of people overall - the current 40 vote target means I could give 4000 1% votes out every day (for example). Moving to 10 means that I can only vote on 1000 people before losing vote strength.

@timcliff wrote a great post summarising the potential payout changes with the HF-19 launch that prompted this comment below from @liberosist :

I'm trying to stay positive and think of the increased minnow influence - but all I can think about is how is this going to affect some of my recent projects like @centerlink .

Steemfest Travel Fund

I have been fundraising for the Steemfest travel reimbursement fund using a combination of my powerdown , sending post rewards and direct post beneficiary splitting.

Unfortunately I didn't realise at the time that rewards split using this method are sent as Steem Power only - not liquid funds :(

These are the payouts visible in the t-r-f transfer history :

5 days ago { "type": "comment_benefactor_reward", "benefactor": "t-r-f", "author": "ausbitbank", "permlink": "-from-0-to-100k-aud-in-11-months-thanks-to-steem", "reward": "547792.721399 VESTS" }

7 days ago { "type": "comment_benefactor_reward", "benefactor": "t-r-f", "author": "ausbitbank", "permlink": "new-seed-node-online-a-seedsteemvizcom", "reward": "727293.401466 VESTS" }

But right now the funds sit in limbo unclaimed and unusable - I made a mistake but there's still time.

We need @t-r-f and @roelandp to claim those rewards and start a powerdown so all the donations are available as liquid funds.

Donation total so far :

= ~$5190 USD donated for Steemfest :D

@centerlink now supports 119 Aussie steemians

I've been delegating SP and donating post rewards to try and kickstart a few initiatives for the Aussie community - @teamaustralia and @centerlink .

After being around for less then a week @centerlink already sponsors 119 Steemians with votes.

I've spent some time customising my own version of @personz FOSSBOT voter and for now the algorithm is pretty basic - but now we a much more flexible system for complicated rulesets in the future :)

Vote power is set at 10% for now, but will need to be decreased further when the hardfork kicks in soon.

Checking @centerlink stats in the P.A.L discord chat

#teamaustralia member @gohba.handcrafts also had the great idea to help fund centerlink by holding a chook raffle to win a custom handcrafted pen/stylus .

Entries are still open for 3 more days - just send $2 SBD to @centerlink with the memo code chook raffle to enter the draw!

Witness Update Post Reward Giveaway Update

Whilst looking through this weeks blocks witnessed by my node I wasn't able to find enough eligible quality posts for every day that I felt were worthy of being sent at least $50+ each.

So I've decided to postpone this weeks giveaway and will instead use the liquid rewards of this post to powerup up both @centerlink and @minnowsupport .

I will continue the giveaway in my next weeks update, but this week it was just a really unlucky selection of blocks I ended up getting - mostly filled with votes and comments not top level posts.

Last weeks winners:

Last week we had 8 different winners , you can learn more about the selection process in last weeks update .

  • @minnowsupport received a 30% share of 65 Steem Power worth ~$140 USD
  • The remaining 7 users got a 10% share and each 21.7 Steem Power worth ~$46 USD

It's the final countdown !

Your advice about not using the 100% steem power option for posts and not using the internal convert for SBD really added value to me personally. Thank you!

@ausitbank I've written about not using "Convert to STEEM" feature, but I hadn't even thought about the "Don't Power UP" aspect. I guess it does make sense though. So when you get a payout, I suppose then it's also giving you that 50% SBD at a $1 value versus $1.60 or so (where it is now). If so, that would mean our current Power Ups are potentially costing us 50% x 0.6 SBD in potential extra SBD! Please correct me if I am somehow misunderstanding what you wrote.

Also, just curious when you say "1 missed blocks this week (10 ever)", how does that relate versus required server reboots or other required downtime? Or is that part of the "10 ever"? That would seem unlikely to me unless you're running 2 or 3 witnesses simultaneously with fall-over capability.

right, but the minnows can't adjust the votingpower :/

You can change it at 55 reputation right?

i'm not sure. i thought, you have to become a superuser with at least 800 sp...

If I'm right you need at least 1M Vests to use the voting slider.

I have it, at 500 steempower you can use the slider ;)

thank you very much, altinay. Proost!

THIS. Yeah, FAQ rhymes with WORK. j/k thanks for doing the work for us!

Really? I was adjusting mine in eSteem app.... or at least I thought I was.... Does it not do anything?

yeah, I think it's a UI issue though, not a block chain limitation, but I may be wrong on this. They should definitely consider offering the slider to steemians with >100SP, versus 500SP minimum now.

thx for your comment, Alex. yes, they should do this. btw. they should hide the upvote-button until you open the post and diskuss changing this new linear system to an degressive one...

I want to make my Steem Power Work! Is anyone 100% sure what is going to happen during the hard fork?

^^^UPVOTED^^^

You're an inspiration. Thanks for the update and the honest update in your witness

Glad FOSSbot Voter is getting used 😆 And thanks for the contribution 🤓

I told you b4 this is the first time i have ever used social media and that's still true.. I'm 3 week in now so I thought i would update you on my progress. I now understand how it works . Not just the posting but the actual way this concept of interaction works. YES i made some big mistakes as your aware of and im putting that down to a very steep learning curve, but I want to say thanks for still upvoting me even though you could have just forgotten me and never looked back. it is unfortunate though @sirknight did not try to explain to me how all this needs to be played out. the community idea I had was how i learn a lot of what not to do ..lol.. but I would still do it again as it revealed a great deal to me. I was like a Kalahari bush man who had just been dumped it New York city. lol but i used my survival skills and have learned to survive. So thanks again and may you receive all you wish for.
Cheers
Graham

Aah the update is during my birthday dinner! If I have time after, I'll check out how things are looking. If panic is ensuing or things have gone peacefully :-)

My dad asked me to write this, as I am on Skype with him. I sent him this link, and he dictated to me:

"I'm trying to stay positive and think of the increased minnow influence - but all I can think about is how is this going to affect some of my recent projects...."

Improvize, overcome & adapt.

Believe in yourself, because your intentions are good and everything you do shall be done in a way that helps people out.

Don't lose time stressing over what has been done, remain focused and keep marching forwards through life.

Jack.

I like how you transcribe for Dad. More sons and daughters should do this.

Wise words. I'll try :)

I would also add that you should be patient on exchanges trading those SBD. I like to place my orders pretty high because SBD has such low volumes and it often experiences irrational pumps, which only last for minutes. 77k satoshis is a good order imo, unless you need that money instantly.

I upvoted this.... because .... I was losing mad Steemloot using the internal convert (not that much but still) and you / @ausbitbank are saving my booty :)

Yeah, the internal convert is a mistake nowadays. I am glad that this post and my comment could save someone some money.

Good work, half of the tech stuff went over my head but im glad your looking after it :).
Thanks for the info on posting 50/50 and also on using the market to convert and not the internal system. Ive made both of those mistakes in the last few days.
Thanks for the update.

Slightly worried about HF19 but fingers crossed it will work itself out

I just want to thank you for the awesome support you have given to the #minnowsupport project. You are very much appreciated

Thank you for all your hard work you provide for the community. Love reading all your articles.

Now if I can just get my ranking up!!

Thank you for the time and effort you put in to being a witness. Also, for Minnow Support Project and PALnet. With a recommendation from @someguy123, I give you a witness vote.

Thankyou for your support :)

My only hope for hf19 is that quality posts will get more earnings. It is quality posts that will keep this platform alive and vibrant

Steemians should be taking advantage of these higher prices and sell SBD above face value while you can.

recommented so it doesn't get lost in the shuffle. SBD is supposed to be a peg, so bet on efforts to keep it that way.

Lot's of good info in this post. Thanks!

This HF, is sounding like Steemit is looking at the future and trying to find that happy medium. I only joined 2 weeks ago and most of my followers are minnows. and even I only have 100+, it is good to know that I can build a good relationship with those followers and not get disheartened when I get a lot of upvotes but not the return for my effort of creating a post. But maybe a HF later down the road will be a happy medium as some of us minnow become whales. The only thing I don't understand is, those of us that want to create more posts. How is that going to effect. For example, I'm planning to start doing breakdowns with pic and writing how to create games. I don't want to do a youtube video and post it up, I want to do it as a teaching lesson. How will that effect me if I have multiple posts on step by step processes, and increasing my reputation.

Thanks for the update. There's some good info and tips in here. Congrats on the new voters - hopefully this will keep going!

let's all keep our finger crossed for HF19.

great post upvoted

As a new member, I added more value since following you as your posts are very helpful. My fingers are crossed and hope that all will go well and people will see more success especially those of us that puts in efforsts on daily basis..keep up the good work

Great information.

thanks :)

I am currently scared lol

Very good master @ausbitbank but unfortunately I still do not understand the complicated problems that are in steemit

Yayyyy! Bring it on babe! :D

thick air ...

This is awesome news, thank you for sharing this with us :) upvoted!

Idk how i feel about the SBD pegging idea.

Thanks for the writing. It is still rather mindboggling to me but I learn more and more each day from posts like these! Also as for I don't know much about HF19 I can feel it as well! Never had such a feeling on facebook!

Thanks for the breakdown. You always have accurate and up to date information!

Thank you for all your hard work you provide for the community.

Keeping fingers crossed for HF19!

Woohhoo! Such a long long article. Thumbs up for the hard work :)
^voted!

I went to bed last night like a 5 year old on Xmas eve I'm following you :)

Nice post ...resteemed it

Happy hard fork @ausbitbank and everyone!! :D Can't wait to see how 'Equality' plays out

So what does that actually mean, missing 10 blocks?

Obviously I'm asking for a friend. ;-)

Another great article! Thanks for the update!

Thanks again, I very much appreciate it!

I'm just going to roll with it and keep an eagle eye on my vote strength as I do my thing. I do not like the idea of 10 power upvotes. I feel quite limited. You know that ever since they implemented the slider I've been an advocate of everyone less than whale status should vote 100% otherwise what's the point? This is definitely going to shift things... but how? hmmm... TBD, I guess.

Thanks for the update. Lots of good info about the changes.

thank you for all of your diligent work on our behalf! very informative as usual

Thank you very much for this post. I have upvoted, please do the same thing for me to help each other

Thanx for the update, these updates broadens my knowledge about steemit community as I am a newbie here. I regularly look for your articles. Although still there are some parts which I do not understand but slowly slowly everything will be in my command.

lol I'm a noob. I have no don't understand any of this.

Congratulations @ausbitbank
You took 82 place in my Top 100 of posts
