Steemit Newbies: Ask Me Anything (About Steemit) In The Next Hour, OPERATION HELP NOOBS

in #ama7 years ago (edited)

Reading a post by @fisteganos just now reminded me of the fact that there are so many more new users that have suddenly entered Steemit. I am always trying to figure out new ways to help people understand Steemit better, so for the next hour, post your questions, and I'll answer them (if I can).

It's a Steemit AMA, starting right now!

Ask your questions! Go!

Sort:

What is the best overall basic up-to-date beginners tutorial for steemit newbies?

I have a step by step video guide that is just for new people. @probizranker
Its free and there to help newbies. check it out and let me know your thoughts or questions.

can you post the link, please?

I'll do one next week! Come to the town...

Thanks, following

These might help.

Genious! Thanks @teamsteem and @stellabelle for the idea...

yes, thanks for those!

http://www.steemithelp.net is incredible and really well-organized.

Thanks

The official FAQ is a great start: https://steemit.com/faq.html

Thank you. I think I've read it but it probably wouldn't hurt to go back and reread it.

Woow, so true! it's really helpful

Thanks stellabelle. I need all the help i can get.

asking very specific questions is the key. When i first found steemit, it was overwhelming. So, everyday, I just learned one thing....One day it was Markup. The next week it was blockchain....one thing at a time, very slowly.

I just found few hours ago some posts about that. It will sure help because it is good info and warning there:

I have a draft email where i manage all that links... otherwise it will be a mess :-)

Placed the security advices links because i still have trouble understanding a lot of things here :-).
Again, hope it helps being centralized (just information, not the chain, hehe).

How can i get steem? I get small amounts of steem power, vests and sbd but i still have 0.0 steem in my wallet. Thanks for explaining. +upvoted J

a quick trip to your blog and I notice that you have a lot of resteems, way more than you're blogging. Writing really good comments on blogs you like is the first step to making a friend. Making friends is actually way more effective in earning than people realize.

Thank you. I'll try that. J

Writing every day on Steemit is a start.

i like your way to helping the new born steemers, yes need there is a platform on steem to help the newbies because there is a lot of things need a guidance , steem using is very easy but in start little bit tricky , like curation ,authors ,self voting, SP , lease SP , delegators, voting bots ,rewards, 7 days payouts etc etc.....

perhaps a solution will develop from these AMA's. Thanks.

Hi, I am a yunk newbie and I don't have any yunky question because I spent 3000 minutes, reading faq, searching on google and reading posts. Don't be lazy guys.

Great initiative, hope you will help some newbies!

@jwolf gets around better than anyone on steemit.
I propose he be our new minister of newbies and it should be an official position! ;-)

haha, thank you so much man!

What is yunk?

when one is ready, yunk will find you. You don't need to search for it.

it's true... it overwhelms you :-D

sounds like junk though.

Hey thanks you for this initiative! I have a couple questions:

When witnesses want to change something, for example maximum block size, how do they do it? do they just talk it over and when they find an agreement they can just change it? What can the witnesses alter, and what can't they alter without a fork?

We need witnesses, like @gtg, @jesta @pharesim @timcliff or others to answer this. I didn't think they could increase the block size without community consensus, but I don't know for sure. Let's see if they come to answer these questions. thanks.

from @gtg · 2 hours ago

There are some witness parameters like a minimum account creation fee, a maximum block size, an annual percentage rate for SBD and a price feed.
Sometimes we talk it over, sometimes we don't. We don't need an agreement here. In the end it is at sole discretion of a witness. Of course we don't need a fork as those parameters can be altered by witnesses by design. Effective value for the network is computed using median from values of witnesses that generated blocks.
What we can't alter is anything that is a part of the consensus, for example, we can't change the algorithm being used in computing curation rewards that we agreed on in the latest hard fork.

thanks a lot, both of you!

How to get up-votes from whales?

Solve a problem that hundreds of Steemians are suffering from and your chances will go up.

Hey, when are you gonna come join us for some Steemit poker? We need your energy. What do you say?

I'm running 5 projects at the moment...so I doubt it will be soon, but thank you!

What can I do to improve within Steemit platform ? I have been here for almost 2 months with a reputation of 55 and Steem power of 200, I interact with a lot of people on here but how can I make my posts stick out more ? I want to make improvements in everything , so I can get better . @stellabelle

This is a complicated answer. Steemit is like an onion, and the deeper levels get noticed after one asks the right questions or does enough deep diving. Here are the main things I would suggest:

  1. Study why Steem was invented: https://bytemaster.github.io/
  2. When studying, look up all words you don't understand.
  3. Find work to do in Steemit. Ask yourself this question: what are the biggest pain points of newbies? Take a survey of people just like yourself and start helping people who are newer than you. There are tons of articles that I want to write, but don't have time to write them all......Whatever things you know how to do well, make a how-to guide and help those under you.
  4. Make friends with others.
  5. Study people who do well, and figure out what they do that you aren't doing.
  6. Find a mentor who is similar to you. A good example of this was when I wanted to become a better writer. Most writers I knew weren't similar to me. I had to find a writer who was like me (a little crazy, very confessional, and erratic), and I did find one: James Altucher. I studied everything he did, and copied his methods (I did not copy his work. (duh).
  7. Find out what things you want to change in the world...what bugs you? Develop a solution to what bugs you and share it on here.

I think this qualifies for a separate post. You should republish this as a separate post so that more newbies can find it easily.

yeah, i think it might be time for this....to unleash the question:
If you don't know why Steem was invented, it's time to study."

Awesome response.

All legitimate advice , I appreciate it !

Not OP, but in my experience interacting with other peoples posts helps a lot. Try commenting more.

yeah, that's very important. That's how you make friends...maybe a post needs to be written on that topic.

What is important to you?

What is important to me is creating good content , creating content that people will like to read and will look forward to a post from me . This place is an addiction to me now and I want to satisfy the people that follow me

Hi Farwa,

Content is a tricky word in that it can mean practically anything, right? A picture of a flower. A guide to better writing. A recipe. A skateboarding video. All content. I'm super new to Steemit but have been creating "content" for a long time. I think the key to creating good content is authenticity and expertise.

Start here: What do you care about, like what moves you? and then what are you an expert at? If you write thoughtfully about something that moves you, others will be moved too. If you offer valuable information to a particular niche interested in learning how to do that thing you are great at, people will read what you write and they'll be grateful you took the time to share your wisdom.

Next, envision your target audience as you write. Picture them. What do they do on a Saturday? What music do they listen to? How do they dress? How old are they? What country do they live in? Really have a particular person in mind as opposed to writing to everyone. It may sound counter intuitive but you will actually reach more people this way, when your audience feels that you are writing to them as opposed to writing something generic.

It seems like you have many interesting posts on your blog. Keep at it. Think of it as a science experiment and over time you will discover what works and what does not.

I wanna know how does the voting power increase, is there a guide or scale, how many SP do I need to make my vote worth .02?
Is there some kind of rule that measures the value?

Funny that you used the same exact figure I was thinking about. Once you have that vote worth, every time you vote it is like saying "Here is my two cents". I have 540 Steem Power and my votes are worth 7 cents. Just upvoted you as you mentioned that number ;)

my best guess is that you would need about 200 Steem Power in order to give $.02. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.. Correction: 150

A little less, even. 200 SP gives you a $0.03 vote.
You can calculate this here: https://steemnow.com/upvotecalc.html

Thanks for this. I will correct my guess.

I think your guess was pretty accurate for a guess :D

My SP is 437 and my 100% vote at full power is $0.07

Ok thanks a lot for the answer, and for this initiative of helping, I;m gonna keep investigating lol, cheers and seem on.

I have 2550 SP and my 100% is worth 40 cents at 90%. If this helps.

So do I! and concerning to that, there is a calculator in Steemnow.com but seems to have a little difference... Not clear till now.

There's a rule/algorithm that measures how much your vote is worth, and it's directly related to how much SP you have. I am not sure how much SP you would need to have in order to reach $02.....but I could guess, hold on.

using steemnow @xeldal has 280k SP and his 100% upvote is woth $38 at 90% voting power. Since rewards are linear now, for $0.02 you need 280 000/1900=147 SP. FOr $0.015, which will appear as 0.02, you need about 110 SP AT 90% voting power of course

Ring, ring !!! :)

calculation on current steem price for getting 0.02$ SP you will need 150 steems than you will get (0.0225$) of worth vote value, note that calculation is on current steem price .

hmm interesting using steemnow and xeldal's SP and upvote worth I reached a value very cose to that (147SP at 90% voting power). However you seem to have calulated directly from the steem price which seems much cleaner. How did you calculate that?

I think the calculator from Steemnow. But the values are not true. Always is a difference between that calculator, Steemdb.com and Steemit itself... and you never knows.

How much yunk does steemit have ?

And me to where does the money of votes after the post expires goes! I mean, day ten.. I vote. Where does the earnings goes? Thanks @stellabelle

in other words, if you upvote a post that is older than 7 days, the vote payout indicator will not increase. It remains frozen.

Woow.. that's right, but some days ago we try it with a friends and really was discounting I'll keep an eye on that! I swear i checked it.. anyway I did it with one of yours and didn't worked! By the way...are you the Steemitfest planner? Where can I find info? Wanna goooooo
VotedandFollow.png

the payout deadline is 7 days after you make the post. So, after 7 days, the Steem is paid to the author and curators, and it is deposited to their accounts. No more money can be earned on posts which are older than 7 days. The algorithm prevents that from happening.

Thanks for the Answer, @stellabelle... but please fin an old one and try to vote ir.. you CAN!

In the future, do you think that could change? It seems to me that a valuable post could be missed and discovered a month later. Wouldn't it be nice to reward that author for their work as well?

we have discussed this.....no one knows what the future will hold.

I need a video on how to use the wallet, from the begining to the end (taking the money out to the street).

ok, do you use bittrex or poloniex to transfer to BTC?

i'm working on this....be patient.

Thanks for this.. does your Steem Power and Steem Savings earn interest? And if so, how much?

It did when I first joined, and to be honest, I think this changed. I don't think Steem Savings earns interest. However, in the case of Steem Power, because of the ability to give wealth to others in the form of upvotes, there's no competition currently. If someone knows anything about interest, please comment.

Ok thank you!

I recently looked for this information in regards to Steem Power. I think the interest is not valid anymore.
For Steem Savings there is no interest currently.

Here's my question: How good is it for Steemit, when steemians unite into communities by nationality? Or is it not good?

I think it can be good. I am German and often my German posts make more money than my English posts. I think it's because we can look for the tag "deutsch" specifically. When the community is smaller, you also remember names better and can build better relationships.
Also, you share the same mentality. Germans for example have a reputation for "quality work". This is really important in the German Steemit community, too. You get rewarded for quality articles only. Not for funny pictures that took you no effort :)
So if you share the same mentality you can also "predict" better, which content will be successful, and which not.
I guess you'd just have to try it out. You might get less followers or readers, but I think quality trumps quantity, also when it comes to followers... :)

thanks for your informative answer. I agree with you completely.

I agree in many respects, but here there is a difference in the strength of the community, which is collected according to certain signs, which acts a little depressingly ... But everything is ahead and the more people, the stronger the society! Thank you!

I think it's good. We are still very tribal and we all need support from those who are similar to us. I personally cannot thrive when I am around people who are too different from me. I believe most of humanity is programmed like this.

Thank you, this is what I wanted to hear

Hey @stellabelle !

Great idea... we minnows really appreciate the opinion or advice of whales or more experienced users. Thanks for supporting us! ☺

I would like to know your opinion on trails and automated votes. I know for curators is good cos they can make income doing absolutely nothing... but I wonder how voting a post without reading it is healthy for the platform.

Thanks so much beforehand!

Voting for posts that one has not read is not good for this platform. All tools can be abused, especially auto upvote bots. I actually don't have a voting bot, but I used to. I have mixed feelings on this bot issue. Too many bots, not enough human curators will create a shitty social media site. But too many restrictive rules also throttles innovation. Automation is not going away, however, I believe that one can be a good member of Steemit, use voting bots, and provide value. I also think that if one is abusive, or overly selfish, then this platform will be abused mercilessly.
The reason I stopped using bots: I wanted to go back to the more time-consuming, but more conscious way of voting for people. However, I have recently decided I want to add some up and coming authors to a voting bot, so I'm in the process of getting that done. This is to make me freer to concentrate on projects.

Thanks so much for sharing your opinion about this topic. I think that as everything it has its advantages and disadvantages and it can be used with good or bad intentions.

I also think that in a way, having people voting automatically ... at least supports the platform and adds for the growth of it. I feel in two minds, not sure what to think about this all.

Thanks again @stellabelle!

I don't like trails.

Kind of a weird question...I just ran a promotion where I have to send 1 SBD to about 25 followers. Is there a way to do a wallet transfer to more than one user, or do I have to do each SBD transfer individually?

I think you have to do it one by one.

Thanks, I thought I probably would have to, but good to know. Glad I don't have 100 to do!

as far as I know, you have to do it individually.

Thanks for being a help to newbies @stellabelle. I also did a post as regards to that. I'll dm you the link later.

I'm not a newbie, but I'll like to know exactly how curation rewards work. When is the best time to Upvote a post?

Is there any reason that will stop someone from getting curation rewards from posts they Upvoted?

Thanks as I anticipate your answers.

AFAIK the best time to upvote a post is 30 minutes after it was written. People will very little Steem Power don't get much in the way of curation rewards because of the algorithm. This means that if I vote for a post at 30 minutes, and @dan votes for that same post at 30 minutes (+ 1 millisecond), he will get more Steem than me in curation rewards. That's why it doesn't make sense for minnows (and seaweed) to pile on votes for big posts. Cultivating social bonds is way more rewarding long-term.

@stellabelle, what if a post has Lasted for more than 24hrs, will I still get my curation rewards from such posts?

By the way, nice and helpful post. I've Upvoted and Resteemed. 👍

yes, but not as much as a curator who voted after 30 minutes.

"Is there any reason that will stop someone from getting curation rewards from posts they Upvoted?" - if you vote after 1 minute the post was made, the author gets 99% of your curation rewards. You have to wait 30 minutes so you get all of the curation rewards for yourself, but some people might vote before. It's a little game one could say. If you've found a hidden gem, wait to 30 mins and then vote and spread it. If you know the author gets voted by big whales always at 27 mins, you could vote at 26 mins etc.

Thanks very much for this reply @igster.

I love your work Stella! Following since I started!

My question is this - When will the self voting stop, for the good of the community? Sorry - I just had to throw that in. Please forgive me, I know it's impossible to have an answer to this. BTW - thanks for taking your time to help others - gratitude!!

As long as humans are humans, I doubt it will stop. The scarcity mindset is the primary cause of this......but even I self-upvote....(posts not comments normally)

Thanks for replying, and for your helping others. I upvote myself as well.
I sure enjoy Steem it, I've become friends with amazing people, from all over the globe. All because of this platform. To me, this is the glory of Steem it.
Thanks @stellebelle!!

hahah I die every time @cornholio... F&%$ it, upvoted:)

I had asked timcliff a question about potential abuse of the system and his kind answer eventually brought me here. Unfortunately to late, but when I saw this post here, I thought it might be an opportunity to get an answer to my question...

I have had a few of these cornholio... well, what should I call it... comments (?) on my posts. Adding a link might be seen as spam, so I'll only paste one of the lines I'm referring to

"Nicaragua....aqua for my bunghole.....arriba..."

I quite frankly don't understand what its supposed to mean, nor do I find it funny. Actually I find it disturbing and annoying in a row of quality comments. One thing for what fb offers a good solution, one can ban a user.

I'd be very thankful, if someone could give me a hint of what this cornholio is about and how I could get rid of.. it (?)

WEll, if you find it offensive, you can flag the comment, which will reduce the reputation of the user. Also, you can explain to the user why you find it offensive and ask the user to stop. That way they will know why they are being flagged. You can also use the mute button if you just don't want to see their posts anymore.

Thank you very much for your detailed answer. I was already wondering about the mute button. But I find it difficult to guess the users intentions and wasn't sure where this would lead... Since I saw the comment pop up here, I thought maybe you know him/her and could tell me what his behavior is all about. Could well be, that I simply don't understand it as a German.

The flag issue is a bit confusing to me... I have found several comments and explanations, where users here say, its the same as downvoting...

I also see this little flag sign to the right of each post and am wondering if that is what you mean...

Do ppl also earn through just commenting ???

PS. I hate the new posting feature it doesn't have a preview.

yes, but it looks like only 14% of the reward pool goes to comments.

How does people know about mentions? I mean, if somebody mentioned you in the comment, not in the post

You can use the eSteem app available on android and iOS. It sends you notifications on almost everything; mentions, replies, upvotes...

Thanks. I use eSteem, but it works incorrect with mentios and I wrote about it in one of my posts. I get offline notifications while connecting to the network, but when I click on it to read, my Feed page opens, not the post with a mention.
And when I am online and see pop-up message about mentoins, it disappears in a split second and I do not have enough time to read it. Like space rocket!
I thought maybe someone knows another decision...

I don't know, but i bet there's a tool for this....anyone know the answer?

Is posting 100 comments a day roughly what you did? Or was posting articles better? I see you have been resteeming articles? Does that help your channel? if yes how so?

when i first joined, i commented like crazy. But i tried to leave thoughtful comments. I made friends!!!!!!! I got excited! I also posted 2 times per day, EVERY DAY. I never missed days, and then almost lost my mind.

Hello my name is Mike my question is what's the easiest way to upload videos. Thank you mike

I still use YouTube, but I've been seeing other options like View.ly? I think @paulag wrote about this....not sure though.

Cheers nice one , thanks for replying

Thanks @stellabelle! This is a cool thing to do! :)
I'm a month and a half old. 2 questions:
1st burning one: How can I promote my posts so more people see it? I think my content is good, but I don't see many eyeballs there. I'm not using @randowhale or @booster. I want a real audience who can interact with me.
2nd important one: I used the #yunk tag in my last post. A writing contest with its proceeds going for a noble cause. And it felt good yunking! :)
However, after I posted, I felt unsure about the categories of content for which we can yunk. Stories? Any kind? Photos? Research?

  1. Do you have existing social media friends? When I came into Steemit, I spent a lot of time recruiting my Facebook friends to join Steemit. That's one reason why I had people following me in here. They followed me from Facebook into Steemit.
Steemit is more group and social oriented than people realize. It's necessary to branch out and make friends who are similar to you. Friendships actually create more stable followers.

  2. About the #yunk tag, you will have to ask the members of the #yunk channel in Steemit Chat. Yunk has more to do with an ego-less kind of existing, and is more about not judging others......if you understand the concepts of Taoism, you'll understand yunk.

My best advice: knowing your true self, having goals that you want to accomplish by working together with others will get you far. Steemit still has lots of problems. Instead of focusing on people seeing your blog, I think shifting to solving problems that lots of people have in here can get your farther.

  1. I do on FB. But, I go there rarely now. Thanks for the suggestion. You are absolutely right! Friendships only will endure.
  2. Appreciate the explanation. I like the concept of Yunk. I'll read up on Taoism too. :)

Love your best advice! Thanks for taking the time to help. Probably the best I got over here. Will definitely keep it in mind every time I log on to Steemit. Thanks @stellabelle! Thanks so much! <3

Who or what helped you yourself when you were a new born steem?

The main thing that helped me: my insatiable desire to learn everything.
However, tons of whales upvoted me when I first joined in June 2016. Steemed, roadscape, jamesc, so many whales gave me their vote. Back then, though there was way less competition.

Another thing that helps me blog daily: I am fairly sure I've got some attention issues. I am a serial learner, and so I have the shiny object syndrome. I tend to hyper focus on a topic for days, weeks or months until I exhaust the obsession. This makes writing easy.
so my first love is reading, studying. Writing is just a a product of learning.

This forever learning syndrome could serve to illuminate others too rather than merely glorifying you as a person, hopefully :)

How much SP do we need to have before we get the Slider?
When I vote does that Money come out of my account?

I honestly don't know the answer.....I am hoping @timcliff answers this.

I believe you need a minimum of 500 SP to get the slider.

And no, the money doesn't come out of your account but from the general purse called the reward pool

@stellabelle. Picture and writing interesting, I'm glad to have visited your blog, help me for this and visit my blog if there is time.

I appreciate that you trying to figure out new ways to help people understand Steemit. Very nice of you.

How much yunk could a good yunk yunk if a good yunk could yunk yunk?

How to earn some bucks by app development on steemit

In which steem currency I will get the payment , steem power or steem dollar ??

Depends on who hires you. Generally, developers do the project and then post their results in a blog. That's how they are paid, depending on the usefulness of what they create. The more people find it useful, the more money you generally make.

At least a little one?

:)

Can you explain all these accounts I see called "minnow support" and "minnow boost"? Are these scams? Do you have to pay for someone to boost you? Is it worth it?? (Sorry, I know that's more than one question, but it's all one topic).
Thanks!!!

Minnow Support is not a scam. It's run by a trusted Steemian, @aggroed. He's a very good person. As far as the vote buying projects, I'm not a fan, but I have tried them out. I think they can be useful for a little bit, like a little help, but they should not be depended on long-term. I would not really advise using them very miuch.

I am very happy that you can help me, how can I upload the votes that make me, I have several followers but very few are the ones who actually vote?

I don't understand exactly what you mean:

how can I upload the votes that make me

This has been so helpful, especially the video. Personally am yet to know how to transfer through bittrex and I was able to grab little if not all. You are doing a great work @stellabelle. Keep it up as always; still on the learning phase as well and through all this coaches most questions I have in mind has been answered. But am still here though cause the learning never stops. upvoted and resteemed!

look on Youtube for these videos......or ask someone in your country, because I don't know the process for Nigeria.

We need more people like you on this platform stellabelle! ♥

How can we claim only steem power? Why do people only claim steem power ? Why some people people have estimated account more than ours however they have got the same sbd as we have ..?

there's a drop down menu on right side when you write a post. You can choose "100% steem power". The other question I don't have an answer to, because I don't clearly understand the question.

Hi. The estimated account value adds up your Steem, Steem Power, and SBD so it's most likely those that have a higher estimated account value have more SP than you.

I want to know if your view about bogs have changed, thanks for this post and all your support-upped.
I mentioned you on my post regarding bots, feel free to see it and send in your comment. I wish you more success and hope that we stay in touch.

i am mixed about bots. They are useful if useful people build them. If the wrong people build bots, they are not good.

Very good point indeed, thanks.

How many bots are actively used on steemit now?

I don't know. But I bet a bot could be programmed to answer that question.

Hahah ok let me know when that bot's programming finished. :)

Hy,

Well... after searching and haven't finding anything about that, i will ask if on www.steem.chat is a different account than here?

I tried to login with my user from here (with main pw... also tried with post pw) and didn't worked.

Do i have to make another account there from scratch?

Thanks

Hello @stellabelle

This post reads three days ago. So I guess I'm late. But I'm new and I almost don't know my way around here.

I'm the newest newbie here and I seek your suggestions, tips and advice on how to grow on this platform.

I will so much appreciate your tips. Thanks

@harrywill
