This is my very first, fully finished portrait that I draw using a photo of a well known singer. :D Ok, ok, hold on, I know it doesn't look like anyone famous. I'm well aware of that. Let me tell you the whole story :)
Up until now almost each drawing practice of mine was based on a video tutorial. I know I still have a lot to learn but today I felt like trying to draw something freehand, without using a video tutorial as a guideline. I'd like to make a drawing for a friend of mine from Hungary, she's crazy about a singer guy and it would be great to send her a gift for Christmas. Something unique I was thinking.
Drawing her favorite singer seemed perfect! Bold plan, I know but I have to try to draw other things as well, not just from tutorials.
The guy is full of ink and piercings, his eyes are always full of black make-up, which made my job a lot easier.
Having no guidelines, no instructions, I had to identify the angle and establish the proportions.
I'm showing you all these creepy work in progress photos so you can see how I started out and how many times I had to redraw something till I get to the finished drawing.
The jaw and the chin was a pain. My model is very skinny and it was pretty difficult to draw a skinny face that (supposedly) looks like my model.
The eyes and the nose is acceptable, I was pretty satisfied with them. I'm not saying it's what I wanted, but it's good.
I made it skinny and from that moment the face became sad. The neck is awful.
At this point I decided to go rogue and do a portrait of a human being that looks like a man, or as I always say, "at least looks like a human being".
And here it is, my first finished portrait.
I had a lot of fun drawing it, I'm still laughing when I look at him, I see the mistakes I've made and know that went wrong.
I'm going to try to draw the singer again soon. I won't give up :)
P.S. The dark mark under his right eye was intentional, the original model has a thick black line there.
Materials used:
- drawing paper 17x24 cm, 110g/m2
- 0.5 Rotring pencil
- HB and 2B pencils.

Many thanks.
Lukisan yang indah, sukses terus @erikah!
Wow! Great Drawing. Looks absolutely realistic. Beautiful art.
Thank you!
It looks good, Erika. Not perfect, but it's ok. I fail to see the resemblance to someone famous....would it be a dj? Anyway, I can see the progress hence I applaud you. 🙂👍
He's not a Dj, he's a rock singer, I mean he supposed to be :P Ok, my model is :P
Thank you Roxy, you know I do this for fun, so I'm not really concerned ... I know I'm going to do better in time. I need practice.
Rock singer? Someone from the new wave?
Drawing is fun and as long you enjoy doing it, it does not matter how the result is being perceived. 🙂
I'm planning to buy one of those drawing sheets for kids and start drawing. Not portraits but flowers and cats. Our friend Barbara inspired me with her cute funny drawings.
I'll leave you a message on Discord. 😉
Wow! There is something very encapsulating about this drawing. I feel so much emotion in it.
Wonderful job @erikah, I love it!
Thank you for the kind words @futurmind, I'm really glad you like it. I tried to do something normal :)
@futuremind, what do you see exactly? Can you describe it? And thanks for the resteem and your support. You're always so kind 🙂
You're welcome erikah :)
I derive a feeling of pain and sadness in the eye's, a sense of longing for something that is missing in his life. Perhaps I interpret it this way because of things in my life right now, but the eye's tell a story here, to me, they are the most powerful dynamic of your drawing, and you captured a sense of "thought" very well here.
This means a lot to me. Did you know that the model photo was a happy, almost smiling one?
Had to change it because the guy's mouth was a bit open and could not draw his teeth and mouth like that. So I draw it like this and the guy became sad 😕
It's unbelievable how a little line can change everything.
I'm going to practice portraits and face expression and I'd love to hear your opinion, if possible. 🙂
If art is an outward expression of our inward self, maybe one of your emotions became part of the art!
It's a beautiful piece, I would not have guessed he was happy, but I feel there is meaning to the sadness or longing in his eye's.
I wonder what feeling you derive from it? You don't have to share if you don't want to. I think it's amazing how our art can change how we feel so drastically, even about the art piece itself at times! Sometime's, my art makes me feel good, sometimes sad, sometimes I even get angry at my art, because it is TRUTH, and I cannot hide from it.
If I would be a very good artist, I'd say this is something coming from inside, as you said, maybe one of my emotions became part of the drawing. But I'm a beginner and I draw what I can. Meaning, I start something and like this drawing, I get something, maybe a totally different thing.
The model is a very interesting guy, I guess I'm going to draw more based on his photos. I want to tell you who he is, you're going to see how expressive he is. I'm sending you a message on Discord.
You know, while I was drawing, my only concern was to create something acceptable, so my drawing would look like a human being. It amuses me how I have to redo some parts, like noses, mouths, eyes etc. So while drawing I can only concentrate on the work. As I said in my post, I can laugh about how untalented I am, and how creepy my drawings can be. This is good because it's fun and gives me pleasure, makes me want to draw more. And it's also a therapy for me, it helps me think, put my thoughts in order.
After that, however, looking at it, it made me feel sad, somehow I felt sorry for him because indeed, it looks like he has some huge problems. I should have erased a part of it and draw it again but I'm always afraid of ruining it completely and not being able to restore it.
So I left it as it is and I'm going to do another drawing soon, making sure it won't be a sad face.
Feel free to ask me anything, I don't really have anyone to talk about this, except for a few people. But you're the only one who explained it with great details. I'm so happy and grateful for that :)
I find myself also redoing parts of my poetry and music. I think this is a normal part of the creative process. Artists are never satisfied with their work, and this is the mark of a good artist in my opinion!
I'm laughing at the idea of you being untalented, that is so not true!!!
This is something we share in common! :)
It's hard for me to say, but I think you made the right choice. It doesn't look like a beginner drew this. If in fact you are a beginner, you are very advanced, more so than you might think. I also think there is meaning to why the drawing came out opposite of his perceived emotion. What the meaning is, I'm not sure because I am not the artist, but I think it has to either do with you, or something your subconscious picked up on with his emotions.
If it comes out sad again, that's ok! I will just have to virtually tickle you and make you laugh with emojis, and it won't bother you so much! 😛 😉
Be careful what you wish for 😉 💕
How do you do it? I am amazed at how artists draw people
Wow, thanks for calling me an artist, I'm honoured :)
How do I do it? I have no idea. I saw a couple of video tutorials and started drawing. This is what came out of it 😀
