Hello everyone, Hive Gaming community!
I recently finished Days Gone, a Sony exclusive that at the time passed without shame or glory, and after having finished it, I can understand the reason why.
La historia y los personajes NO funcionan
The story and characters do NOT work
When this game was announced, there were 2 features that seemed to be the most promising, we will talk about one later, but for now, let's go with the story.
Our protagonist, Deacon, must deal with a personal loss, that of his wife Sarah, to be more precise. This seems to be one of the fundamental pillars of the story, in fact, much of the advertising campaign focused on this. Well, although we have flashbacks that help us better understand the relationship between Deacon and Sarah, the truth is that everything looks very artificial, the way they meet and fall in love, is not at all convincing, but this should not be a problem, after all, we are facing an action game, not romance, the really annoying thing about this relationship is the little chemistry between the two; perhaps the problem is more on the part of Sarah, a character with no charisma with whom I never get to empathize.
There is wasted potential with the side characters and camps, I mean, the game could have explored each of the camps and their inhabitants more in depth, instead, 2 of the 4 available are simply places in which to do side quests and side missions.
One of the characters I empathized with the most was Rikki, and it's precisely because she has more leisurely missions, in the style of "The Last of Us", where you really feel the closeness with the character. Boozer has an interesting arc where he has to find a new way of living, but I don't think it's well executed at all, because his missions are mostly assignments, when what he really needed were more intimate moments that were in line with what he wanted to convey, and hey, using more elaboradas cinematic, of those that Sony loves, would have been great.
In general, the game tries to be emotional, but the characters don't help at all, and certain decisions made in the story throw away what little the game was building up to.
Las hordas son decepcionantes
The hordes are disappointing
Well, let's talk about the second feature, the supposedly incredible hordes of zombies. Let's start by saying that yes, seeing that immense amount of zombies on screen is incredible, unfortunately fighting against them is not so much. It is important to mention that there are two types of hordes, first, there are those of the main story (the "best"), and second, there are those that we can find on the map marked with an icon.
Maybe more than one will not agree with me with what I will say next, but I really think that using scripts in action sequences can give them a spectacularly that otherwise would not have achieved, that's why, as we saw in the E3 gameplay, using scripts for the main hordes was the best decision, because instead, we have that these fights are reduced to running, turn, shoot, keep running, and repeat the process over and over again, sorry, but I find that anything but fun.
No destaca en nada
Does not stand out in anything
It is difficult to find outstanding aspects in this title, its gameplay is functional but offers absolutely nothing out of the ordinary, the open world is repetitive, and the story leaves much to be desired, perhaps the most redeemable would be Deacon's motorcycle, mostly because of the control, as you can feel the weight of it and when you get used to it is quite nice to ride it, However, the modifications left me quite to owe, because the improvements are quite basic and focus mostly on speed and endurance, I think it would have been better to add elements to help fight the zombies, such as reinforcing the front to kill them directly without losing speed, or a rear compartment that would allow to leave spikes/obstacles on the road. Anyway, among so many great franchises like God of War, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, and new Ip's like Horizon or Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone remains in a void from which I do not think it will come out, and will remain in the list of Sony exclusives that failed to transcend.
So much for today's post, I've been a few days inactive as my PC has been giving problems, I hope I can fix them soon as I was planning to bring a few gameplays. So you know, if I disappear for another week it's because the blue screen of death strikes again.
Thanks for reading, see you in the next post!
I think you misunderstood what the story was suppose to be about. It isn't supposed to be about Deacon and Sarah's relationship or even the characters we encounter such as Riki and Boozer, it's a story about moving on. Almost every character we meet in the game is holding onto something from the past. For Deacon, it was Sarah, for Boozer it was his arm.
The open world is repetitive but when you have a world that is as "big" as Days Gone, things are going to get repetitive. And I'm not sure how you were playing the game but the Hordes were intimidating as hell to me. One second I'm just driving my bike, trying to get X place, the next thing a horde is chasing after me. Of course once you develop a decent strategy for dealing with them, they become releativly easy but still.
You can also learn quite a bit about the side characters if you take your time getting to destinations.
The only real complaints I have of the game are that the second half became kind of a slog, and the infinte gas tanks, and hell I got this game two days before it offically came out so experienced it in all of it's bugginess.
Yes, I got the point of the story, that's why in the post I mention that the game makes a decision that throws away what was being worked on, since you have finished the game and I can speak with spoilers, I was referring to the fact that Sarah was alive, what was the point of all this arc of Deacon letting her go, so that in the end she was alive?, it's a twist in the story that I didn't like at all. With Boozer, they do something similar, he supposedly sacrifices himself and then 5 minutes later he's alive.
The hordes are intimidating, but fighting them wasn't that much fun.
Oh, I didn't mention the infinite gas tanks, but the game also doesn't try to hide the fact that materials are plentiful, in that sense it's the opposite of TLOU. And the bugs are still there, lots of FPS dips, oddly enough, in moments where there are no zombies.
Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it very much!
I've gotta agree with the whole Boozer thing, but I honestly loved the reveal that Sarah was still alive.
Materials are plentiful and I would have liked more a system where you had to manage your inventory more. I think the story (at least up until the second halve) is top notched. I loved how the story tried to do something different, and the complexity that is Deacon St. John. In all honesty, I'd love a DLC where it explores his and Boozer's back story.
A concept for a second game was dismissed. Who knows they might come up with a new one though.
You've had the exact opposite experience as me with this game. Loved it through and through. The story was engaging and the hordes were especially fun. The open world was a wee bit repetitive for sure but it's supposed to be an abandoned wasteland.
