I knew a guy that was a long-time friend of mine and was a really cool dude. Then one day he just disappeared for a while and then one day I spotted him sitting behind some sort of street stall with some other rather tweaked out looking friends. Despite our long history, he treated me with hostility and I could tell by his eyes that he was on meth.

Thankfully he recovered but he tells me that he feels the call of this drug on a regular basis and struggles to stay off of it. He has been very forthcoming about the fact that if he disappears again, that I will know why. As someone who has never really been addicted to anything other than cigarettes, I sympathize with this guy and many other like him.

Thats very sad to hear and I hope your pal finds the strength to win that battle. I think once Meth has its deadly teeth in to your soul it's very hard to shake! Was your friend Thai?

Yes, the friend was Thai. In fact, I don't know a single foreigner that has ever even dabbled in meth here in Thailand. I don't think it is really offered to foreigners but then again, I don't really get involved with drugs.

I never knew it was this bad as that is very scary as this is a hard drug which you cannot compare to weed. Weed back in the 80's was seen as terrible and was not a hard drug and was basically 1 level up from a cigarette.

Meth is most certainly a hard drug! The youth of Thailand have a lot of challenges ahead of them. Exposure to this terrible drug is not helping them at all.

They have a drug here in SA called Tik made from bleach and it is also quite highly used in the poorer communities.

Made from bleach!? My god that sounds awful.

Gosh, I had no idea the meth problem is so rampant in Thailand. As you said, rose coloured glasses. It is do tragic as the addiction happens very quickly from what little I know of the drug.

I believe in Australia Meth is also a huge problem. Perhaps living on a yacht is a good way to escape...:) Thanks for reading!

This is a common problem in Malaysia, but maybe not as obvious as in Thailand. Sometimes we hear of crime cases of people murdering their parents while under the influence. Or addicts involved in road accidents etc. We called meth, "syabu".

Sadly I think the meth problem is spreading through S.E. Asia s fast as Covid. Where there is profits to be made corrupt authorities will be involved also.

That is so very true.

When I was still living there it seemed like every other day a huge "yaba" bust was happening at the borders and the police / army would all line up to congratulate themselves on a job well done. It has done very little to stop its availability and because I am a cynic it wouldn't surprise me at all if it is the police themselves that are putting these drugs on the street. A little extra "tea money".

Yes I know what you mean and I also suspect you may be right - having lived in Thailand for a while I have trouble believing the police are not involved directly in the drug trade in some form or another at each level.

Thanks so much!

The same situation here in Philippines is happening and although the current admin is moving heaven and hell to curb it, these pushers always have a way at bringing it to the market. Until there are users, these drugglords are here to stay.

Yes sad situation. The war on drugs will always fail if the root cause is not addressed at the user level I feel.
