Freewrite: My Struggle With Traditional Employment

Back to writing again, because lo and behold, I found some time!

So I've decided to take an extended break from traditional employment after a year and a half. I just need some time to reflect and work on projects that actually interest me. I've been struggling to maintain interest in my traditional field of network engineering, despite reaching the pinnacle in terms of credentials. It just doesn't energize me any more. Perhaps I need to drive a final dagger into that career-- the trading time for dollars. Perhaps I need to disengage the rat race. My field is becoming more and more software-defined, meaning that it is rapidly getting automated. This means I have to become an expert in a whole slew of new skills in order to stay relevant. I'm just not sure it is possible. The nascent digital economy is what energizes me, not automating networks. Could I force myself to redefine skills that took me 20 years to build? I have my doubts. If I do happen to accept another traditional job in the future, it will have to be in a company or field I am passionate about. As I grow older, I become much worse at faking it.

Traditional jobs are strange constructs. People voluntarily subjugate themselves. They subject themselves to all sorts of requirements and restrictions. In the present day, even medical ones! The term 'wage slave' really is appropriate within this context. Trading time for dollars, getting stuck in a pattern, and having to ask permission to deviate from that pattern. You are a tiny part of a machine meant to generate wealth for someone else. This is an arrangement you must settle for, because the sky is not the limit in terms of your potential success if you work for someone else.

This arrangement is fine for a lot of people, because they have been programmed their entire life to believe this is the only approach to life. It's not by the way, and the digital economy will prove that out. I feel fortunate that I am an early adopter. If you are stuck in that traditional job pattern, try viewing that job as an incubator. Build businesses and passive income streams with the intent of eliminating that job, because your time is infinitely more valuable than what your company is paying you.

I can totally understand you. Being a freelancer and joining the crypto world back in 2016 proved essential for my financial resilience and survival, in essence. I am young as well, 24-year-old, and rather healthy, but considering the current mayhem and instability or volatility on the global job market in these times, it's just a way too brutal dog-eat-dog world that I didn't want to be part of in the first place to begin with or I that I won't ever join for that matter as well.

Nonetheless, I must mention I've been there abroad (i.e. in this dog-eat-dog world), and I saw how people can change negatively for only a meaningless piece of cardboard that they call graduation diploma in order to put other down in a foreign country just because they think they are entitled to more (native versus foreigner complex).

The good news is that I fled that terrible country and I swear I won't ever set foot there again in my entire life. It was terrible for me. I did everything by the book and was repaid with way too little according to my work and deeds. Convicts live better there than hard working people or students. It was terrible in many ways. Anyway, best of luck to you and much health and blessings! Keep up the good work and rest assured that many people feel you! :)

Thanks for your comments. I'm glad you're in a better place and found your way here!

Yes, indeed. I hope for all the best to you and all like-minded people here on HIVE as well! Cheers! :)

"Trading time for dollars ... You are a tiny part of a machine meant to generate wealth for someone else."

The "lot" to which most of us must submit, as least while we are young and have had no time to accumulate any savings or investments of any kind.

Breaking free of this takes a great deal of discipline. Very few are willing to submit to the taming of their "instant gratification" more or less, so they are stuck ... If we can do it, though, there is something "magical" about having your money make money. While you are doing that in which you truly find value (and the motivation you speak of ...) or even while you are sleeping! 👍

"I feel fortunate that I am an early adopter."

Yes, agreed and right there with you. I retired earlier than I might have simply to avoid the stress which I felt was literally shortening my life span. I am now making more than I was at the peak of my career ...

It can be done! I hope all is well with you and yours, my friend. Especially your little guy. Remember he is not only your future, but (properly considered, IMHO) our future!

P.S. Glad to see, after your long lay off, that you posted in LeoFi. I can provide a significantly higher upvote "in here" ... 😉

Hey @roleerob, always good to hear from you! My time preference has lowered quite a bit in recent years. I rather enjoy 'spending' my money on things that appreciate and generate cash flow. Spending more time with my son was definitely a primary goal of this step!

@joshman I agree with so much on this post and I feel I am too young to.

Working as a doctor for 3 months was so draining for me that's until the doctors in my CVvountry went on strike.

I hope we come back out of it so I'll be earning guilt less salary but I am also enjoying what I have been doing on hive.

Anyway welcome back brother...I hope we finally figure out this thing.

Imagine being so financially secure you could just help people in need on your own terms!

Appreciate your comments!

You're welcome...have a nice day!!

I'm just not sure it is possible. The nascent digital economy is what energizes me, not automating networks. Could I force myself to redefine skills that took me 20 years to build? I have my doubts.

Same situation here - I work in a technology which is proprietary to my company and sometimes I also fear, what will happen, if I am let go. Of course I have varied background to work on another technology but that would not be my best. Only yesterday, I was thinking to start to redefine my skills and your post came up. I believe, we can definitely learn new skills. It may be faster or time taking, but its just our mind set - we need to make a plan and work on it. Slowly so that it won't leave any frustrations. We can mix that with confidence with the domain knowledge which is very much rewarding. I have decided to start with AWS Azure. Javascript is also on my list but I get bored quickly so have to add that as a advertisement may be in the main movie.

Whatever the new skill you've got to have a passion for it. It can't be a comfortable situation working with a proprietary system.

Man good seeing you back at again. Missed your posts in my feed. I took a short hiatus a few times the last few months myself. The last time I wasn't sure I would return to social media period. Anyway, came back anew, even created a new account (old one you remember @joebrochin has been shuttered). I just needed a new beginning for some reason it felt right.

Did I say it is good to see you back on chain?

My field is becoming more and more software-defined, meaning that it is rapidly getting automated.

A good deal of the IT field is moving in this direction. I wouldn't;t worry too much as you will be fine. However, I see older admins scrambling because they refused to adapt to the cloud's disruptive nature and what digital transformation meant. They don't even recognize what you have pointed out above. They are just sitting around playing with Redline staplers in basements wondering why they haven't been paid.

Thanks brother. Good to have a bit more spare time. Followed your new acct!

Thanks. My youngest is on the blockchain now to @puffdaddy5488. He's going to be writing STEM-related stuff, playing Splinterlands, and doing other youngster tech stuff. Maybe you and @slobberchops can help me look out after on here and show him the ropes kind of like you did me a couple of times.

It took me until my mid 50's to finally drop out of the traditional employment grind. Best decision I ever made. It took a lot of downsizing and life changes and things got a little tight financially sometimes but now I'm probably happier overall than I have been in a long time. Blockchain and crypto was an amazing find for me 3+ years ago (better a little late than never). Too bad it wasn't around 20 years ago though. :)

Indeed. I started downsizing a while ago and was living well below my means. I am much happier for it. Thanks for dropping by!

I can only agree with you. I quit my last job and only decently paid one ( even though I was still highly undervalued ), over 5 years ago ( aged 34 ). I had tried for 9 years, since graduating from Uni, to fit in but I never really felt like I did. I felt burnt out and depressed. I couldn't be myself.

My move to Portugal in 2018 helped a lot and so did discovering crypto blogging and investing, back in June 2017.

I am so happy I made the move before C*vid took over the airwaves and made many things mor complicated.

I wish you all the best for the future!

I am with you about fitting in. I often suffered from imposter syndrome :)

Well the legacy system tends to do that to most people. It’s designed that way. Thankfully we now have blockchain. Virtual worlds and gaming will be a hot crypto sector in the next year. Your on the right path… :)

I'm guessing you already found @splinterlands!

Thanks for visiting.

I managed to exit the rat race four years ago and hope crypto will keep me away from it for the rest of my life.
