Question: what does FUD mean in financial markets?
Answer: In financial markets, FUD stands for Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt. It's a strategy used to spread negative or misleading information to influence market sentiment. The goal of FUD is often to drive down the price of an asset, such as a stock or cryptocurrency, by causing panic among investors. It can be employed deliberately by competitors, traders, or media outlets to manipulate market reactions. When people succumb to FUD, they may sell their assets in fear of losses, contributing to a downward price spiral.
Prompt:
Lets imagine that you are a crypto trader. What would be your investment strategy if we started with 1000$ today.
If I were a crypto trader starting with $1,000 today, my strategy would focus on balancing risk and reward while keeping capital preservation as a key priority. Here's how I would approach it:
Diversification is critical in crypto due to its volatility. I would allocate my portfolio into different categories to balance high-risk, high-reward tokens with more stable assets.
50% in Blue-Chip Cryptos (Stable, long-term holdings):
Bitcoin (BTC) (30%): The most established crypto asset, often seen as a store of value (digital gold). It’s less volatile than altcoins.
Ethereum (ETH) (20%): The leader in smart contracts and decentralized applications (DeFi, NFTs).
Ethereum has significant growth potential due to its role in the decentralized finance ecosystem.
30% in Growth Altcoins (Moderate to high-risk, high-reward):
Layer 1 blockchains like Solana (SOL), Polygon (MATIC), or Avalanche (AVAX): These are competitors to Ethereum, focusing on fast, scalable smart contracts and dApps.
Layer 2 projects (scaling solutions for Ethereum like Arbitrum, Optimism): These have strong potential for DeFi and gaming use cases.
15% in DeFi Projects (High-risk, high-reward):
DeFi tokens like Uniswap (UNI), Aave (AAVE), or Curve (CRV): These are governance tokens for decentralized exchanges and lending platforms that power much of the DeFi ecosystem.
Some exposure to decentralized stablecoin projects like Maker (MKR)
5% in High-risk, Speculative tokens (Gambles on future tech):
Emerging trends in sectors like gaming (GALA, ENJ), AI tokens (AGIX, FET), or privacy coins (Monero, Zcash): These could offer massive returns if they become more mainstream.
I would also consider staking or yield farming options with this portion, for additional income generation.
2. Tactical Strategy
Short-term trading (10-20%): Use a small part of the portfolio for short-term trades to take advantage of market volatility.
This could be trading around events like hard forks, major protocol upgrades, or broader market trends. A portion of Ethereum or an altcoin might be used for swing trading based on price action.
Dollar-Cost Averaging (DCA): Rather than buying everything at once, I would split the investment over weeks or months to manage risk, particularly in volatile conditions. This would apply especially to large-cap assets like BTC and ETH.
Stablecoin holdings: Keeping a small percentage (10%) in stablecoins (like USDC or DAI) allows flexibility for buying dips and staying nimble during volatile market moves. It also offers staking opportunities for a steady yield.
Stop-loss orders: For short-term and swing trades, I would set clear stop-loss levels (e.g., 10-20% below my entry point) to minimize losses.
Take profit levels: For the more speculative investments, setting specific profit targets (e.g., taking 50% off the table if a coin doubles in price) ensures that gains are locked in during big market rallies.
Portfolio rebalancing: Every few months, I would review my holdings to rebalance back to the original strategy. For example, if one altcoin surges and becomes a larger portion of the portfolio, I might sell some to reinvest in BTC or ETH to maintain balance.
On-chain analytics: Keeping an eye on metrics like BTC/ETH whale movements, active addresses, and DeFi Total Value Locked (TVL) to gauge broader market sentiment.
News and regulatory updates: Staying informed on regulatory developments, major partnerships, and technological upgrades (like Ethereum's transition to PoS) is key for long-term strategy shifts.
Community and developer activity: Following projects with strong developer teams and active communities, as these are often indicators of future success.
Staking: I would stake some of the Ethereum or altcoins (like Solana, Polygon) to earn passive income, typically around 4-8% APY.
DeFi: A portion of the stablecoins or major cryptos could be allocated to liquidity pools or lending platforms like Aave to generate yield (though riskier than staking).
I would keep a long-term vision (3-5 years) for the core assets like BTC and ETH, planning to sell a portion only in case of large returns (e.g., if BTC reaches new all-time highs).
For altcoins, my exit would be more tactical, aiming to capture profits when specific price targets are met (e.g., 50-100% returns) rather than holding indefinitely.
Tax considerations: I would also be mindful of local tax implications, planning around long-term capital gains and considering selling under favorable conditions.
$50 High-risk plays (e.g., $25 in gaming tokens, $25 in AI tokens)
By combining a mix of blue-chip cryptos, growth altcoins, and speculative plays with strategic risk management and regular review, this approach aims to build a sustainable portfolio with growth potential while minimizing exposure to extreme downside risks.
I Prompted ChatGPT: What's Hump Day, and why is it called that?
Response:
Hump Day refers to Wednesday, considered the middle of the workweek for many. It's called "Hump Day" because it represents the peak or "hump" in the week. Once you get past Wednesday, you're over the hardest part and closer to the weekend. The term reflects a feeling of making progress, with Monday and Tuesday as the climb, Wednesday as the top, and Thursday and Friday as the descent toward the weekend.
Propmt: Expand on this including how different cultures consider it a "hump day" or don't.
Response:
Hump Day, primarily recognized in Western work cultures, marks Wednesday as the midpoint of the typical five-day workweek (Monday to Friday). The idea is that once Wednesday is over, the week's hardest part is behind, and the downhill slide to the weekend begins. It provides a mental boost by signifying that the end of the workweek is closer.
Western Cultures: In many Western countries like the U.S. and the U.K., the traditional workweek runs from Monday to Friday. Therefore, Wednesday is often colloquially called "Hump Day." This term is tied to the idea of a workweek structured around the weekend as a period of rest and leisure.
Middle Eastern Countries: In countries like Saudi Arabia and the UAE, the workweek typically runs from Sunday to Thursday, with Friday and Saturday as the weekend. In this case, Wednesday would still be a "Hump Day," as it marks the midpoint of their workweek.
South Asian Countries: In countries like India, where the workweek may stretch from Monday to Saturday, Wednesday might not have the same "hump" symbolism, as many workers still have multiple days to go before their rest period. However, in sectors that follow a five-day week, Wednesday could still hold this significance.
Religious Considerations: In cultures where religious days affect the structure of the week (e.g., Friday prayers for Muslims or Sunday for Christians), the concept of "Hump Day" might be less prominent. Instead, the significance is more likely placed around these holy days, rather than the midpoint of a secular workweek.
In cultures where the workweek differs, the "hump" might be placed on another day, but the idea of a midweek turning point still holds psychological value for many workers worldwide.

I Prompted ChatGPT: I have a gameplay video, is there an ai tool that translates what's happening on the screen into text. What I want is similar to transcription, but in a way that describes what the player is doing and what the game is doing too with no unnecessary line.
Yes, there are AI tools that can help describe gameplay by interpreting what's happening on-screen. However, achieving the level of specificity you're asking for—accurately describing player actions and game events without unnecessary information—would require a combination of tools:
Object Detection & Scene Understanding: Tools like OpenCV with YOLO (You Only Look Once) or TensorFlow can detect objects and actions happening in the game, such as identifying characters, enemies, or specific objects in a scene.
Action Recognition Models: Pre-trained AI models, such as those from the Action Recognition space, can be used to understand player movement or in-game actions (like shooting, jumping, etc.).
Text Generation for Narration: Once the gameplay actions are identified, models like GPT-4 can generate concise descriptions of what's happening based on the detected actions.
If you want to automate this, you'd need to combine visual analysis tools with natural language generation tailored to your gameplay. It would require some custom setup, but it's feasible with current AI technology. Would you like guidance on how to set this up?
Prompt: Is there a single tool, online or offline that can do that?
Summarized Response: There isn't a single tool that transcribes gameplay into detailed action-based descriptions. Some options, like GameSight AI or OpenAI Codex combined with visual recognition tools, can partially meet this need but would require custom integration. Replay analysis tools focus more on performance than narration. A full solution would likely require combining multiple tools.
Currently, there isn't a single AI tool that automatically transcribes gameplay into detailed action-based descriptions (like a narrator describing what the player and game elements are doing) in one step. Most tools focus on specific aspects, such as screen capture, object detection, or basic transcription of voice, but not detailed action narration.
GameSight AI (Custom Integration): This tool is designed for esports and gaming analytics. It can recognize key in-game events but would still need custom integration with a language model to generate text.
OpenAI Codex/GPT-4 with Custom Vision Models: Though not a pre-built tool, using GPT-4 combined with a visual recognition tool like OpenCV, YOLO, or others could theoretically create a system for generating game-based descriptions. This setup would be offline but require some technical expertise to implement.
Replay Analysis Tools (e.g., AimLab, Highlights AI): These focus more on performance analysis for players (aim, kills, etc.) rather than detailed descriptions, but they could be extended for basic action detection.
At this time, no single off-the-shelf tool provides the exact gameplay-to-text description functionality. You'd likely need a custom solution involving multiple tools or models.
GPT-4: Feed detected events into OpenAI’s GPT-4 API to automatically generate concise text descriptions.
Workflow:
Use OBS to capture gameplay.
Apply object or action recognition models to detect key events.
GPT-4 turns recognized actions into narrative text.
This setup offers flexibility without complex coding. While no single tool automates everything, combining these makes the process easier and more customizable for different games.
Here's an outline of tools that are relatively easy to use together, without needing to code from scratch:
1. OBS Studio + OpenAI (via API or GPT-based tools)
OBS Studio: Use this free software to record or stream your gameplay.
Pre-trained Object Detection Models: Integrate a model like YOLOv5 or OpenCV (you can use pre-trained models, which are easy to set up using Python) to detect game events such as character movements, enemies, weapons, etc.
OpenAI GPT-4 or ChatGPT: Once objects or actions are detected, you can feed that data to GPT-4 using OpenAI’s API for natural language generation to create the descriptions of what's happening.
Ease of Setup: Some technical setup is required for object detection, but using Python and available libraries can streamline it. OpenAI’s API is easy to integrate for the text generation part.
Action Recognition Model: Use models like TSN (Temporal Segment Network) or SlowFast (from PyTorch) to recognize high-level actions in the game. These models can recognize specific types of movement or activities like jumping, shooting, etc.
GPT-4: Integrate GPT-4 to narrate based on recognized actions, automatically translating the events into text.
Ease of Setup: Action recognition models like SlowFast have pre-trained versions, so they don’t require much tweaking. You can use Python to create a simple pipeline to pass recognized actions to GPT-4 for narration.
Some specific games have trackers that log game events (kills, objectives, etc.). Pair these logs with tools like Deepgram or Descript (which also handle some visual recognition tasks) for auto-generated text summaries based on in-game logs.
Example: If you're working with a well-known game, such as Fortnite, tools like Fortnite Tracker provide in-game events, which can be processed into text summaries using AI summarization tools.

👨🏾💻: What prompt frameworks/formats have been proven to provide the best responses from LLMs based on user feedback and based on your perception?
🤖: Several prompt frameworks and formats have emerged as effective approaches for eliciting high-quality responses from Large Language Models (LLMs) based on recent research and best practices. Here are some of the most promising methods:
The MIMG framework has shown significant improvements in generating high-quality, multi-hop instruction data for long-context tasks[1]. This approach incorporates:
This framework has been shown to improve data quality, with over 85% of generated samples being high-quality, multi-hop, and diverse[1].
Structured Prompting
Structured prompting has emerged as a best practice for using LLMs in text annotation tasks[5]. This approach involves:
Clearly defining the task and evaluation criteria
Breaking down complex tasks into smaller, manageable steps
Using consistent formatting and language across prompts
Structured prompting helps ensure consistency and reduces the likelihood of misunderstandings or biased results from the LLM.
Evolutionary Prompt Engineering for Code (EPiC)
For code generation tasks, the EPiC framework has shown promise in improving the quality of generated code while minimizing interactions with the LLM[2]. This approach uses a lightweight evolutionary algorithm to evolve prompts towards better ones that produce high-quality code.
The LMLF (Language Models with Logical Feedback) approach has shown effectiveness in guiding LLMs for specific tasks, such as drug discovery[4]. This method:
Separates domain constraints (written in logical form) from the text-based query
Iteratively refines constraints based on logical feedback
Keeps the query unchanged while improving the logical component
This approach has demonstrated the ability to guide different LLMs to generate potential leads in pharmacological research.
AI-Enhanced Prompting and Fine-tuning
Research on computational social science tasks has revealed that[7]:
Clear task descriptions: Provide detailed and unambiguous instructions for the desired output[5].
Consistent formatting: Maintain a consistent structure and language across prompts[5].
Iterative refinement: Use feedback and results to continuously improve prompts[6].
Model selection: Choose LLMs with larger vocabularies and diverse pre-training corpora[7].
Prompt stability analysis: Assess the consistency of LLM outputs across multiple runs with the same prompt[5].
Ethical considerations: Be mindful of potential biases and ethical implications when designing prompts[5].
By incorporating these frameworks and best practices, researchers and practitioners can improve the quality and reliability of LLM-generated responses across a wide range of tasks.
Just sent you a little delegation. I wish it could be more. I tried to think of who made the best contributions to my feed and doesn't have a ton of Leo. I hope this helps you grow your photo threadcast
You live in UK? I can't remember if that is a restricted country, but you can get a free Visa card for a seiss bank account (also free) through thor wallet.
I think it would be dope if inleo finds a way to build some kind of notification system where we'd get the "ding" alert on our phones incase someone responds to our threads or blog post.
Its the primary reason why I'm keeping the Ecency app.
As I sat her stairing at my blank sceen, wondering what to write, yes that happens to me sometimes, a lot of different things went through my head.
A lot of different things have being going through my head since I launched @thebbhproject Witness. Things like how many threads about it are to many, how many people am I pissing off by promoting it so mcuh. Reaching out to people on Discord, hoping I am not pissing people off by doing 'cold calls'.
But then I thought about it. A term I first heard I believe when I was in the military: NO ASK NO GET. Then I thought about my sales training from a few years ago. And things became clear to me this morning.
I am going to push the shit, and bug the shit out of people till I get our Witness higher and higher and higher.
I BELIEVE 100 percent in what I am doing on Hive, with The BBH Project (if you are new to my blog read everything below to get educated). I cannot sit in the corner and hope and cross my fingers that someone might stumble across the witness. I have to do the work, I have to be the sales person to make people believe in me and my mission.
I have proved myself here on the Hive block chain, I have no doubt about that. A lot of people know me, but not enough, a lot of people believe in me, but not enough.

It's comparable to what you've been talking a lot about lately. As you know, current LLMs are trained on "everything", i.e. not specialized. This is what LeoAI will bring to the table; still trained on everything, but in addition it's specialized on Hive data.
This example is basically the same concept, but for coding. It allows you to locally fine tune your programming environment to gain access to up-to-date documentation for specific software libraries. Very useful when you're building hive applications for instance. Sure, most LLMs can make hive applications without it, but often, specific functions (and especially new ones) are not part of the training data, making it very difficult to create working code. This is a major hurdle that this prompting-tip solves.
Can you install plug-ins on VSCodium? If so (I assume so), the answer is yes. Install the Continue plugin and insert your anthropic (or openai or groq) API key. https://www.continue.dev/
The head of the Federal Aviation Administration on Tuesday defended a decision to delay a SpaceX Starship launch because the company hadn’t followed permitting and licensing requirements, just days after Elon Musk groused that the FAA’s red tape is getting in the way of the company’s ambitions.
Mike Whitaker, the administrator of the FAA, told lawmakers on the House Transportation Committee that his decision to delay SpaceX’s launch for a few months is grounded in safety, and defended the $633,000 fine his agency has proposed against SpaceX as the “only tool” the FAA has to ensure that Musk’s company follows the rules.

The U.S. Department of Justice on Tuesday sued Visa, the world’s biggest payments network, saying it propped up an illegal monopoly over debit payments.
The DOJ said Visa imposed “exclusionary” agreements on partners and smothered upstart firms.
Visa and its smaller rival Mastercard have surged over the past two decades, reaching a combined market cap of roughly $1 trillion.
Twenty days after it rolled out to Blue Origin's launch site in Florida, the second stage of the massive New Glenn rocket underwent a successful hot-fire test on Monday.
The second stage—known as GS2 for Glenn stage 2—ignited for 15 seconds as part of the "risk reduction" hot-fire test, the company said. The two BE-3U engines, fueled by liquid oxygen and hydrogen and each producing 173,000 pounds of thrust, burned with a nearly transparent flame that approached a temperature of 6,000° Fahrenheit.

Duolingo introduced video calls with Lily, one of its main characters, to practice conversation within the app this Tuesday (24). The new feature is powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and will be available to those who practice English, Spanish and French.
The new tool guarantees another step in the learning process through the application, which now offers a conversation system in addition to the lessons already available on the trail. According to the company in a note to Canaltech, the resource has technology to “simulate natural dialogues” and offers a “personalized and interactive practice environment”.
In a demonstration video, Duolingo shows that the option to start a conversation with the platform's character is carried out within the track itself. When you activate it, the application simulates the beginning of a call, by showing the “Calling Lily” notification, and then starts the video conference.
The tool can be used by those who study English, Spanish and French, but will only be available to Duolingo Max subscribers. For now, the company has only announced the new feature in the iOS app.
Duolingo also introduced Adventures, a platform that offers a “gamified experience” for learning new languages within the app. The feature will be available for Android and iOS.
The new feature offers narratives and dynamic scenarios with characters, without being limited to the platform's traditional lessons.

Apple's AI is Going Global: Here's What You Need to Know!
Apple’s generative AI is set to launch with iOS 18.1 in American English, but that’s just the beginning. By 2025, the AI will expand to more languages like German and Korean. Sounds cool, right? But there’s a catch, Apple is facing some regulatory pushback from both the EU and China. They're in talks with officials to sort things out, so it might take a bit longer to fully roll out globally. Keep an eye on this one, big updates are on the way!
Senior campaign officials are meeting with a select group of crypto insiders to hash out policy concerns, but those in the discussions aren't expecting a big splash before the vote.
The Covid-19 pandemic showed how fragile global supply chains could be. To understand how fragile supply chains still are, look no further than the furniture industry, which had record early-pandemic sales but saw a string of bankruptcies recently due to container shortages, scarce raw materials, and long lag times receiving critical components. The most headline-grabbing supply chain crises may be behind us, but a certain degree of fragmentation and chaos in the flow of goods is now the norm. In total, supply chain disruptions have left an estimated $1.6T on the table for the past several years. Looking at a decade’s worth of supply chain disruptions, an average company can expect to lose nearly half of one year’s profit.
When buying factory meat products, you can't be sure of their safety, since factories often don't follow the rules and regulations, as a rule, they first buy the cattle, and then buy health certificates from the farmers. !BEER
I just found out about it today. Apparently it's very different from other browsers... they claim they are trying to make it "the operating system of the internet"
I haven't tried it myself either. The creators claim it's very disruptive and different from all other browsers. They claim to be the "operational system of the internet". I might give it a go later on
Definitely, let's hope there will be more bigger news on this after that 2019's news by Google AI and NASA about achieving quantum supremacy with that 54 qubit machine.

Imagine if someone made a tool that calculates the total token count of Hive Blockchain? It won't be hard to program, but it'll need to download all of the blockchain so it'll need SPACE!
It is rather fun to watch the token count rising even though there isnt a total count.
Well since I dont have access to it, I dont know. But I am sure a there are something things that the devs can tell are being processed. With groq, you see the token counts for different things even on the front end. So imagine the back end people can see a lot more.
Getting healthy is big business these days. Now a startup that’s come up with a unique approach leveraging tech to help people with their exercise regimes
Getting healthy is big business these days. Now a startup that’s come up with a unique approach leveraging tech to help people with their exercise regimes is announcing a big round of funding, putting some weight behind its own push for growth.
Munich-based EGYM — a startup taking a vertically-integrated approach to connected fitness — has closed a Series G round of just over $200 million from L Catterton and Meritech, both new backers of the startup.
The funding is coming in at a post-money valuation of more than $1.2 billion, CEO and founder Philipp Roesch-Schlanderer confirmed to TechCrunch in an interview, and it will be used in a couple of key areas.
The company has several products and services that it sells and develops in tandem. There are connected workout stations that it sells to gyms, and the software that runs on those machines that people exercising can use to better understand what they are doing and getting out of their exertions. There is a marketplace where EGYM connects those gyms to companies that are building out their own wellness programs for their employees. And most recently, there is a new AI-powered personal assistant that EGYM has launched that individuals users can access to help them track their activity and offer more suggestions to improve their activity and outcomes.
The plan will be to drive more business across all of these areas. One focus will be expansion in its newest markets, the U.K. and the U.S., where it has respectively acquired two smaller companies, Hussle and FitReserve. It also wants to continue building the AI assistant, called Genius, which launched earlier this year. Despite the hype around AI, Genius is no AI gimmick, Roesch-Schlanderer said.
The brouhaha in the WordPress community looks likely to escalate into a legal battle around trademarks.
The brouhaha in the WordPress community looks likely to escalate into a legal battle around trademarks.
Just a day after WordPress hosting service WP Engine sent a cease-and-desist notice to Automattic asking its CEO to stop publicly trashing WP Engine, now Automattic has sent its own cease-and-desist letter to WP Engine, saying the latter has infringed several trademarks like WordPress and WooCommerce.
This comes after Matt Mullenweg, the CEO of Automattic and co-creator of WordPress, last week criticized WP Engine for profiteering off the open-source WordPress project, called it a “cancer to WordPress,” and accused the company of contributing very little to the community.
In its letter dated Monday, Automattic alleged that WP Engine has built a business of over $400 million in revenue based on unauthorized use of its WordPress trademark, which Automattic claims it has the exclusive commercial rights for from the WordPress Foundation. Automattic also said WP Engine has misled consumers into believing that there is a direct affliction between the two companies.
“Your unauthorized use of our Client’s trademarks infringes on their rights and dilutes their famous and well-known marks. Negative reviews and comments regarding WP Engine and its offerings are imputed to our Client, thereby tarnishing our Client’s brands, harming their reputation, and damaging the goodwill our Client has established in its marks,” the letter read.
“Your unauthorized use of our Client’s intellectual property has enabled WP Engine to compete with our Client unfairly, and has led to unjust enrichment and undue profits,” it added.
Automattic is also demanding compensation for the profits made by WP Engine by using its trademarks, and said that if WP Engine doesn’t amicably solve the matter, the company has the right to file a civil injunction case.
If you're a paying customer, ChatGPT will respond to your spoken questions and comments quickly. But there's a limit to how much you can use it in a single day.
OpenAI said Tuesday that its popular chatbot now has an advanced voice feature for people who pay for the premium service. The tool allows for more fluid conversations.
The release will continue through the week. The company said it's not yet available in EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland or the U.K.
OpenAI announced the new capability in May. The rollout got plenty of publicity because of a voice called Sky that resembled that of Scarlett Johansson in the 2013 movie "Her." Legal counsel working on behalf of Johansson sent OpenAI letters claiming the company didn't have the right to use the near-identical voice, and OpenAI paused using it in its products, CNBC reported.
In the months since, people have been able to configure ChatGPT to talk to them in other voices through a free tier. The advanced version responds more quickly and will stop talking and listen if you interrupt it. There are now nine voices to choose from, and you can enter instructions for voice chats in the Customizations part of the app's settings.
For the past couple weeks, Google has been releasing its own Gemini Live voice feature in English on Android devices. And on Monday, Reuters reported that Meta will introduce celebrity voices later this week that can be accessed through Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.
Reddit is bringing machine learning-powered translations to more than 35 new languages, including Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish.
Reddit is bringing machine learning-powered translations to more than 35 new locales in Europe, Asia and Latin America in a move designed to open the largely English-centric social network to more users.
The service comes nearly five months after Reddit first introduced site-wide translation for French-speakers, though the company had previously enabled users to translate individual posts across several languages. Reddit already allows users to stipulate their preferred content language for post recommendations, as well as set their display language which translates the Reddit interface itself.
Today’s announcement follows seven months after Reddit went public, and although the company has said its user base and ad revenue continue to grow, the most obvious conduit for attracting a larger base is to make all its content available in more languages.
The big selling point of Reddit’s new translation feature is that users can configure both posts and the corresponding comments to auto-translate from a community’s original language to the user’s own language according to their Reddit settings. This means that a conversation can flow in a given subreddit between two different languages, and users won’t have to manually translate every response. You can post in whatever language you want, and as long as Reddit supports it, it will automatically be translated into the community’s pre-set language.
To do this, users in supported locales will see a new translate icon in their menu that will let them view content in their preferred language.
Posts that have been translated by Reddit will be labeled as such, and users will be able to choose to view posts in the original language if they wish.
Similar to what it did with translating posts in French earlier this year, Reddit said that the content will be indexed in the supported languages for search engines, meaning people Googling for answers to questions in their own tongue will see results from Reddit, too.
MercadoLibre has emerged as a top pick on Wall Street as investors search for tech opportunities beyond the Magnificent Seven.
One of the world's largest e-commerce companies is emerging as a top pick on Wall Street as investors look for tech opportunities beyond the Magnificent Seven.
MercadoLibre, an Argentinian e-commerce and payments platform that's incorporated in Delaware and actively traded on Nasdaq, is up 34% in 2024, compared to a roughly 27% rise for Amazon, and 20% for the S&P 500. The company was founded 25 years ago by CEO Marcos Gaplerin at the height of the dot com boom. It now dominates online sales in Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Chile and makes up roughly half of online sales in South America, according to eMarketer. It also operates a digital payments platform called Mercado Pago.
Roughly 90% of Wall Street analysts who cover the stock rate it a "buy," with an average price target of $2,268 — about 8% upside from where it was trading this week, according to FactSet. There are no sell ratings.
Brad Gerstner of Altimeter Capital is one such bull. He highlighted expanding profit margins and MercadoLibre's AI potential as reasons he's "excited" by the stock.
"You look at companies like MercadoLibre ... a lot of companies that people have kind of forgotten about as [investors] moved in to the Magnificent Seven -- I think there are going to be a lot of internet companies that are benefited by AI," Gerstner told CNBC's Scott Wapner at the Goldman Sachs Communicopia conference this month. "It's not only margin expansion, but reacceleration at the top, where they can acquire customers, improve products in a way that make it easier for customers to buy, and take friction out of the system."
Salesforce has bought out Zoomin, a startup developing a tool to organize all the knowledge and documentation across an organization.
Salesforce is on a buying spree.
After snatching up data management firm Own earlier in the month, Salesforce today announced its plans to buy Zoomin, an enterprise knowledge platform. Zoomin — which we’ve covered a handful of times before — unifies a company’s docs, like product user guides and tutorials, in one portal.
That's smart. Salesforce's current solution for knowledge base management and automation is functional, but it requires a lot of manual configuration and can be tricky to work out. This should make things easier
The terms of the deal weren’t disclosed. Salesforce expects it to be finalized in Q4 of its fiscal year 2025 (January 31), subject to customary closing conditions.
Founded in 2019 by Gal Oron, Hannan Saltzman, and Joe Gelb, Zoomin applies AI and big data to help companies build self-service documentation search and support experiences. The Israeli startup’s customers range from tech brands like McAfee and Dell to fast-food franchises including Burger King, Tim Hortons, and Popeyes.
Zoomin’s investors — among them General Atlantic, Bessemer Ventures Partners, Viola Growth, and Salesforce’s own venture org, Salesforce Ventures — poured $73 million in capital into the firm.
Rahul Auradkar, EVP of unified data sources at Salesforce, says that post-acquisition, Zoomin will augment Salesforce’s Data Cloud platform to power use cases like using a company’s knowledge base to automate customer service interactions.
“Proprietary unstructured data is powerful fuel our customers can use for AI agents and customer experiences,” Auradkar said, “and Zoomin’s proven expertise and technology will accelerate Data Cloud’s innovation and enable our customers to get better value.”
Salesforce’s acquisition of Zoomin comes after the tech giant pledged to spend $500 million in additional cash on AI startups through Salesforce Ventures.
Web 3.0, also known as the third generation of the World Wide Web, is a term used to describe the next phase of the internet's evolution. This decentralized, blockchain-based, and AI-driven Internet aims to provide a more secure, transparent, and user-centric experience. The key characteristics of Web 3.0 include:
This means that data is stored and managed by a network of nodes, rather than a single central authority. decentralization enables greater autonomy, security, and resilience, as well as reduced reliance on centralized systems.
Artificial Intelligence (AI): Web 3.0 incorporates AI and machine learning to enable more intelligent and personalized interactions between users and the internet. AI algorithms can analyze user behavior, preferences, and interests to provide tailored recommendations, improve search results, and enhance overall user experience. AI can also automate tasks, such as data processing, analysis, and decision-making, freeing up human resources for more strategic and creative work.
Internet of Things (IoT): Web 3.0 integrates IoT devices, enabling seamless communication between devices, machines, and humans. IoT devices can collect and share data, automate processes, and provide real-time insights, revolutionizing industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, and transportation.
Blockchain: Web 3.0 uses blockchain technology to secure and verify transactions, ensuring transparency, immutability, and trust. Blockchain's decentralized and distributed nature makes it resistant to censorship, tampering, and data breaches, providing a secure and reliable platform for transactions and data storage.
Open-source: Web 3.0 is built on open-source principles, allowing developers to contribute and modify the code, fostering innovation and collaboration. Open-source software is free to use, modify, and distribute, encouraging community involvement and driving progress.
Decentralized data storage: Web 3.0 enables decentralized data storage, allowing users to store and manage their own data, rather than relying on centralized servers. This approach ensures that users have control over their data, reducing the risk of data breaches, surveillance, and unauthorized access.
Smart contracts: Web 3.0 uses smart contracts to automate and execute agreements between parties, reducing the need for intermediaries and increasing efficiency. Smart contracts are self-executing, self-enforcing, and transparent, ensuring that aLL parties adhere to the agreed-upon terms.
Some of the potential benefits of Web 3.0 include:
Improved security: Decentralized and blockchain-based, Web 3.0 provides a more secure and transparent environment for transactions and data storage, reducing the risk of data breaches, hacking, and unauthorized access.
Increased user control: Web 3.0 empowers users to take control of their data and online interactions, reducing the risk of data breaches and surveillance. Users can manage their own data, set their own privacy settings, and make informed decisions about how their data is used.
Faster innovation: Web 3.0's open-source and decentralized nature accelerates innovation, allowing developers to build and iterate on new projects quickly and efficiently. This enables faster development, testing, and deployment of new technologies and applications.
However, Web 3.0 is still in its early stages, and its development is ongoing. As the technology evolves, we can expect to see more widespread adoption and innovative applications across various industries.
Last year saw the release of ChatGPT-4 in March by OpenAI, which kickstarted the global AI hype. Google followed suit with its advanced AI model, Gemini, in December.
As Statista's Katharina Buchholz reports, both systems have been much more expensive to train than previous AI models and their development has potentially cost hundreds of millions of dollars, according to the Epoch AI release.
The cost of training Gemini, which is a large language model that can be inputted with text, voice commands and images, reportedly stood between $30 and $191 million even before taking staff salaries into consideration.
According to Epoch AI, these can make up 29 percent to 49 percent of the final price. ChatGPT-4, the latest edition, had a technical creation cost of $41 million to $78 million, according to the source. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has in the past said that the model has cost more than $100 million, confirming the calculations.
Looking back, the cost of earlier AI models was much lower. ChatGPT-3 cost only around $2 million to $4 million make in 2020, while Gemini's precursor PaLM in 2022 took between $3 million and $12 million to train when only looking at the cost of computing.
Even at these price points, keeping up with cutting-edge AI development might have proved difficult for academic or other public institutions that have traditionally been active in AI research.
While it was updated to support voice and images in fall 2023, ChatGPT-4, like its name suggests, started out based around its central text input, while Gemini and its app have been designed as a multimodal LLM from the get-go.
This explains why ChatGPT's initial training cost might have been lower.
On the other hand, Gemini's general focus on app delivery - for example, prompting users to snap pictures with their smartphones, pick out features in them and have them analyzed - could have warranted a higher cost.
Bharti Airtel, India's second-largest telecom operator, is rolling out an AI-powered spam detection solution to all its customers.
Bharti Airtel, India’s second-largest telecom operator, launched a free AI-powered spam detection system for all customers on Wednesday, aiming to curb the country’s raging unwanted calls and messages while also calling for stricter regulation of WhatsApp and other messaging platforms.
The company claims the solution is India’s first network-based, AI-powered, spam detection system. The feature will alert Airtel’s customers in real-time to suspected spam calls and text messages, and will automatically activate for all users at no additional cost. Airtel has about 387 million wireless subscribers in India.
Indians have long grappled with a relentless barrage of spam. A recent survey by startup LocalCircles found that a staggering 95% of users report receiving unwanted calls every day, with most facing at least three such intrusions a day. The government’s “Do Not Disturb” (DND) registry has proven largely ineffective, with 90% of registered users still plagued by spammers, the survey found.
Gopal Vittal, managing director and CEO of Bharti Airtel, said the telecom operator spent 12 months building the new spam detection system. “Spam has become a menace for customers,” he said.
Vittal also called for stricter regulatory oversight on messaging platforms including WhatsApp to safeguard customers. WhatsApp users in India, its largest market, have been complaining about the rise of spam texts from brands for many years.
Manchester-based Vsim is developing a new physics simulation framework, and has raised $21.5 million from EQT Ventures and a number of backers.
One of Nvidia’s fundamental breakthroughs has involved processors that power detailed, compute-intensive graphical simulations that can be used for everything from games and industrial development to AI training. Now, two of the engineers who helped build those physical simulations for Nvidia have raised a sizable amount of seed funding for their new startup.
Manchester-based Vsim is developing a new physics simulation framework, and it has raised $21.5 million from EQT Ventures and a number of backers. Vsim confirmed to us that it had previously, quietly raised around $2.5 million, bringing its total funding raised to $24 million. This latest investment has been rumored for a while and values the company at around $100 million valuation.
Factorial Fund, Samsung Next, Tru Arrow, Xora (backed by Temasek), IQ Capital, Koro Capital, Concept Ventures, Lakestar Scout Fund and Carles Reina also participated in the round.
Vsim has been operating in stealth so far, so there is not a lot of evidence of its product just yet. Michelle Lu, who co-founded the startup with Kier Storey, told TechCrunch that they are initially targeting opportunities in robotics training.
However, the tech might be able to do far more than that. One of the key reasons why Vsim has raised a bigger-than-usual seed round is because what it is building has the potential to be used for a lot more.
While simulation technology has been around for years, improvements in processing power are leading to more efficient algorithms, as well as tooling aimed at more specific applications — that’s the opportunity Vsim is targeting.
Lu and Storey are not just the co-founders of Vsim; they are also a couple and have been working side-by-side for nearly two decades, going back to their days as physics students at Newcastle University.
The pair’s first foray into startup life was a short-lived effort when they were fresh out of their PhD program. That company might have had the right talent and ideas but it came at the wrong time, and maybe the wrong place, too: It was 2007, and there was little money to be raised for startups building simulation technology in Northern England, even from promising PhDs.
So the two moved to a new pair of jobs, working for Bizarre Creations, a game studio based out of Manchester. Bizarre found some success and was acquired by Activision, and there they built physics engines for a number of titles. Activision eventually shut down Bizarre and the pair moved to Nvidia, where they worked as engineers focusing on building simulation technology for more than a decade.
Lu said that she and Storey have honed in on simulations for robotics as the first use-case because of a gap in the market: While robots have existed for years now, particularly in industrial settings, they now seem to be at an inflection point thanks to advances in processing, mechanics and AI.
Google said in an antitrust complaint that Microsoft uses unfair licensing contracts in its Azure cloud computing business to stifle competition.
Google filed an antitrust complaint with the European Commission Wednesday accusing Microsoft of using unfair licensing contracts to stifle competition in the multibillion-dollar cloud computing industry.
At the heart of Google's complaint is the allegation that Microsoft uses unfair licensing terms to "lock in" clients and exert control over the cloud market.
Google alleges that Microsoft, through its dominant Windows Server and Microsoft Office products, can make it difficult for its massive roster of clients to use anything but its Azure cloud infrastructure offering.
The internet giant said in its complaint that restrictions contained in Microsoft's cloud licensing terms makes it harder for customers to move their workloads from Microsoft's Azure cloud technology to competitors' clouds, despite there being no technical barriers to doing so.
European businesses and public sector organizations have been forced to pay the firm up to 1 billion euros ($1.1 billion) a year in licensing penalties due to restrictions on customers' ability to switch from one cloud provider to another, Google said, citing a 2023 study by CISPE, a trade body for the cloud computing sector.
The antitrust complaint from Google arrives after CISPE and its members in July agreed a settlement with Microsoft which would see the firm make changes to address competition concerns.
Referring to the CISPE settlement, Microsoft said in a statement Wednesday that it expects the European Commission to dismiss Google's complaint.
"Microsoft settled amicably similar concerns raised by European cloud providers, even after Google hoped they would keep litigating," a Microsoft spokesperson told CNBC via email. "Having failed to persuade European companies, we expect Google similarly will fail to persuade the European Commission."
Microsoft's cloud 'tax' at issue
In a summary of the complaint, Google — which ranks third globally in the cloud computing market behind market leaders Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure, respectively — said that Microsoft "harms cybersecurity and undermines innovation."
WhatFix, a company developing a platform that guides people through using web and desktop apps, has closed a $125 million equity funding round.
Digital transformation — upgrading a company’s legacy apps and processes with new tech — has long been a buzzy and lucrative business. But the pandemic supercharged the market.
Covid pandemic lockdowns and the widespread move to work-from-home spurred brands relying on old technology to modernize their organizations. According to Statista, worldwide spending on digital transformation reached $1.85 trillion in 2022, up more than 16% from the previous year.
WhatFix is among the digital transformation firms that have benefited enormously from the boom. The San Jose-based company, which offers a platform that demos how to use third-party software, this week closed a $125 million Series E round led by Warburg Pincus.
CEO Khadim Batti says that the round, which also had participation from SoftBank’s Vision Fund 2, values WhatFix at a figure 50% higher than its Series D valuation in 2021. WhatFix never disclosed that valuation, but my colleague Ingrid Lunden ascertained that it was close to $600 million. We can assume, then, that the Series E brings the company’s valuation to around $900 million.
Batti co-launched WhatFix with Vara Kumar in 2013 after the pair met while working at Huawei. The Chinese electronics giant had just opened an office in India, near the founders’ home cities.
WhatFix wasn’t an overnight success. Batti and Kumar originally tried building a business around a search engine optimization tool called Search Enabler, but roadblocks kept arising — including user confusion. Few customers knew how to implement the tool’s suggestions, Batti says.
“The recommendations were generally quite basic, such as the webpage not having a title, but customers didn’t know how to use applications like WordPress to correct the error,” he told TechCrunch. “Most were small businesses without technology know-how.”
Out of this early failure sprang inspiration. Batti and Kumar decided to pivot to try their hands at a different challenge: teaching people how to use new software.
What is going on with Google's long-touted migration to an alternative adtech stack (aka its Privacy Sandbox proposal)? What indeed.
What is going on with Google’s long-touted migration to an alternative adtech stack (aka its Privacy Sandbox proposal)? What indeed. The entire multi-year endeavour to reshape the commercial web looks dangerously close to being killed off after the latest intervention by the U.K.’s antitrust regulator, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).
This comes on top of the u-turn that Google made around third-party tracking cookies. Originally they were going to be depreciated; as of July, cookies look like they are here to stay.
The CMA has been probing Google’s Privacy Sandbox plan since January 2021, following a November 2020 complaint by a coalition of digital marketing companies — which is one reason the project has been so tortuously slow. But slow is starting to look like a flat out ‘no’ from the U.K. regulator.
In a case update Tuesday, the CMA’s tossed yet another spanner in Google’s works, writing that it has “competition concerns” about its most recent revisions. Earlier commitments the tech giant had given it would also need to be updated to reflect “the evolution in Google’s planned Privacy Sandbox browser changes”, it said.
Meaning — at the very least — further delays to a project that’s already years over its original schedule.
The CMA said it’s discussing changes with Google, and Google would be required to address its competition concerns — but it has yet to specifying exactly which elements of the revised proposal are not yet meeting the mark. But one thing is clear: Google’s proposed shift to a user-choice architecture is on ice while the regulator weighs impacts.
“If the CMA is not able to agree changes to the commitments with Google which address the competition concerns, then the CMA will consider what further action may be necessary,” the regulator also wrote, again without stipulating what options might be on the table at that point (note: Google already agreed not to end support for tracking cookies without the CMA’s agreement), adding that it will “publicly consult before taking any decision on whether to accept changes to the commitments, and is aiming to do this in Q4 2024”.

According to the FT, the FBI is now poking around nine-year-old Hone Capital, a Palo Alto, Ca.-based venture firm funded by a Chinese private equity firm, to determine whether some of its capital came from the Chinese government — and if it shared sensitive startup data with Beijing.
Originally launched with $115 million from China’s CSC Group, Hone has since snapped up stakes in more than 360 U.S. startups, including the investing platform AngelList, payments giant Stripe, and supersonic flight outfit Boom.
The probe comes amid continuing U.S.-China tensions that have seen U.S. firms back out of the country and prompted both venture funding and startup creation in China to nosedive.
The FT notes that Hone has also been feuding with two former executives since 2020. The firm sued the two – its former CFO and its former Silicon Valley head – alleging fraud. They countersued, saying they’re being denied their fair share of the firm’s profits. Hone and CSC deny any wrongdoing.

Maybe it’s a law of history: every innovation faces opposition...
Maybe it’s a law of history: every innovation faces opposition. The early nineteenth-century Luddites wrecked textile machinery because it took their jobs. Our innate suspicion extends to trade, too, which is, after all, just another technology for turning one thing into another. Apartheid-era white South Africans opposed efforts to modify the Colour Bar because they feared that African workers would take their jobs and reduce them to “uncivilized” standards of living. Protectionists want to shield their fellow Americans from foreign competition.
Artificial intelligence is the most recent worry and was the big technology story of 2023. Should we curse these intelligent machines? After all, once machines can solve problems, they will take all our jobs and cause mass unemployment. Peggy Noonan sounded the alarm about Artificial Intelligence in the pages of the Wall Street Journal. OpenAI’s executives appeared before Congress to ask (perhaps predictably) for licensing and regulation, and some wonder if the robot apocalypse is finally upon us.
We have heard this story before. It’s still wrong.
The “creative” part of creative destruction is harder to see than the “destruction” part. Of course, I can make life a bit more convenient with new apps and subscription services. But it’s not as dramatic as a plant closure, and there’s no despairing laid off laborer to interview.
But what happens when people innovate and increase others’ productivity? They make some resources redundant and free them up for other, more productive uses. Innovation and institutional change run into distributional problems because some people might be made worse off — absolutely and permanently. Sometimes those who take losses from a changing status quo can veto the change. Government social insurance or trade adjustment assistance, for example, might make it easier for people to swallow the bitter pills of losing their livelihoods.
Civil institutions like houses of worship, civic organizations, and other groups help people having hard times. Whether people deserve help might be irrelevant to the political reality. When people put themselves in positions to extract rents, they will do so. In the very long run, weathering periodic injustice might be a small price to pay for big increases in standards of living.
I run the risk of writing my epitaph here, but the threat of artificial intelligence is, most likely, overstated. Learning loss during the COVID-19 pandemic underscored that: online schooling is a poor substitute for in-person schooling. Yes, many meetings could have been emails, but we also feed on contact and conversation. These needs require a lot of human nuances that artificial intelligence is not likely to understand for quite some time.
Releasing labor from areas where machines have taken over has created many new possibilities. Artificial intelligence cannot yet aggregate and deploy knowledge about the particular circumstances of time and place as efficiently and effectively as someone with human intuition. We appreciate aggregations and recommendations, but Facebook’s algorithm doesn’t understand how you do your job quite as well as you do. FA Hayek pointed out a lot of knowledge of “the particular circumstances of time and place” is not properly “scientific.” It is generally of a kind that is difficult (if not impossible) to articulate, much less automate.
The economic historians Joel Mokyr, Chris Vickers, and Nicholas Ziebarth have argued that artificial intelligence might be the world’s best research assistant, but it is unlikely ever to be the world’s best researcher. Every technological change creates a lot of new possibilities. Artificial intelligence — even if not truly “intelligent” — is a monumental achievement of creative cooperation, and it frees up time and energy for even more creative endeavors.
As Frederic Bastiat puts it, “to curse machines is to curse the human mind.” To hate a technology is denigrate the most human undertaking, namely, thinking.

The shutdown of Terraform Labs sets an important standard for how bankruptcies are handled in the crypto industry, and will likely influence future bankruptcy cases.
Terraform Labs has announced that several of its products and services may shut down by October 30, 2024. The company is in discussions with third parties to transfer control of these operations, but if no agreements are made, the shutdown will proceed.
The products that could be affected by this move are Enterprise, Warp, Station, and Alliance Hub. In addition, services like Finder Block Explorer, Foundation, IBC Relayers, Mantlemint, FCD, and API services are also at risk. This decision aligns with the company’s planned exit from direct involvement in the Terra ecosystem, a plan that’s been in motion since their bankruptcy filing.
Legal Background and Bankruptcy Proceedings
In September 2024, a US Bankruptcy Judge approved the company’s plan to wind down operations. The judge described the plan as a better alternative than prolonged litigation. Terraform Labs filed for bankruptcy in January 2023 following the collapse of its TerraUSD stablecoin and Luna
LUNA
$0.39
in May 2022. The event led to around $40 billion in investor losses.
Its founder, Do Kwon, was accused of financial fraud. Terraform Labs reached a $4.5 billion settlement with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). However, the SEC is unlikely to collect the full amount, as the settlement will be paid after Terraform addresses crypto loss claims from its bankruptcy proceedings.
ZeroHedge - On a long enough timeline, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero
Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of artificial intelligence firm OpenAI, published a cryptic blog post on Sept. 23, apparently celebrating that “deep learning worked” and claiming that humanity was on the precipice of an era of unimaginable prosperity.
The CEO also boasted that his company’s technology would be capable of creating more powerful versions of itself within a matter of decades that will accelerate humanity’s scientific progress “across the board.”
Deep learning worked
Altman’s premise appears to be based on the recent debut of the company’s “o1” AI model, which is purportedly capable of reasoning through problems that its previous models struggled to solve.
Many of the company’s detractors have claimed that deep learning, the specific type of AI that powers models such as ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, can’t be scaled to create human-level artificial intelligence.
Per Altman, this appears to mean humanity is on the brink of an area of a new “Intelligence Age” where AI systems will begin to solve Earth’s biggest problems.
“Although it will happen incrementally,” he writes, “astounding triumphs – fixing the climate, establishing a space colony, and the discovery of all of physics – will eventually become commonplace.”
There’s no specific timeline for these changes to occur, and Altman mentions several times that they will happen incrementally and over time.
However, the post itself begins with the statement that “in the next couple of decades, we will be able to do things that would have seemed like magic to our grandparents.”
It’s unclear if Altman’s post is setting the stage for the launch of a new consumer-facing product or major announcement or if he’s simply predicting the onset of the “Intelligence Age” as an exercise in exposition.
Ultimately, Altman appears optimistic about this new age, whether it’s about to begin or already has. He writes that “a defining characteristic of the Intelligence Age will be massive prosperity.”
LinkedIn's AI Controversy: Data Used Without Your Consent?
LinkedIn is under fire for reportedly training its AI models on user data without clearly telling us upfront. Allegedly, before updating its privacy policy, LinkedIn used information from millions of profiles to develop AI tools. This has raised serious concerns about transparency and data privacy. The platform eventually updated its privacy policy, but the initial lack of clarity has sparked debates. Think about it, your profile might have helped build AI without you even knowing. What does this mean for your data’s future use? Keep an eye on this story as it unfolds.
US Proposes New Rule Banning Chinese Tech In Connected Vehicles Over National securityrisks
Modern vehicles have GPS tracking, cameras, microphones, and other optical sensors connected to the Internet. If Chinese-made software and hardware were integrated into these vehicles, then there's a genuine risk America's highways could be flooded with rolling spying machines.
The Biden-Harris administration is getting tougher on China ahead of the November elections to show the American people that they mean business with Beijing. A newly proposed rule from the US commerce Department reveals the potential to ban Chinese-made software and hardware in vehicles connected to the internet.
Today, President Biden is announcing strong action to protect America from the national security risks associated with connected vehicle technologies from countries of concern. The Department of Commerce is issuing a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) that would,
if finalized as proposed, prohibit the sale or import of connected vehicles that incorporate certain technology and the import of particular components themselves from countries of concern, specifically the People's Republic of China (PRC) and Russia.
The announcement is the next step in a process President Biden announced in February, 2024. This NPRM incorporates public feedback submitted in response to the Department's advance notice of proposed rulemaking (ANPRM) issued on March 1, 2024, which sought public comment on the
national security risks associated with certain technologies used in connected vehicles
As the Department of Commerce has found,
vehicles' increasing connectivity creates opportunities to collect and exploit sensitive information
. Certain hardware and
software in connected vehicles enable the capture of information about geographic areas or critical infrastructure
, and present opportunities for
malicious actors
to disrupt the operations of infrastructure or the vehicles themselves. Commerce has determined that certain technologies used in
connected vehicles from the PRC and Russia present particularly acute threats
. These countries of concern could use critical technologies within our supply chains for surveillance and sabotage to undermine national security.
On Sunday, US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo told reporters during a conference call that "in extreme situations, a foreign adversary could shut down or take control of aLL their vehicles operating in the United States, all at the same time, causing crashes (or) blocking roads."
A senior administration official told CNN that the proposed rule would not apply to vehicles already on US highways with Chinese software or hardware installed. The software ban is expected to begin for the model year 2027, and the hardware ban for the model year 2030.
Raimondo said the proposed rule, which is nOW undergoing a 30-day public comment period, is not a protectionist move, yet Chinese critics have disputed this. She noted, "This is not about trade or economic advantage," adding, "This is a strictly national security action."
Meanwhile, Tesla vehicles have faced concerns about spying in China in the last several years. In response, Elon Musk's EV company established a data center in China to store and process data collected from vehicles, aiming to appease authorities and demonstrate compliance with Beijing regulators to address spy fears.
Sam Altman's Vision of the "Intelligence Age": A New Era of AI-Driven Progress
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAi, has recently published a blog post titled "The Intelligence Age," outlining his perspective on the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on human society. This article summarizes and analyzes Altman's key points, as discussed in a video commentary by Dr. Noit.
Altman argues that we are entering a new epoch in human history: the Intelligence Age. This era is characterized by the fusion of human and artificial intelligence, promising unprecedented levels of prosperity and capability. He draws parallels to previous transformative periods such as the Industrial Age and the Information Age, suggesting that the Intelligence Age will bring about changes of similar or greater magnitude.
A central theme in Altman's blog is the accelerating pace of technological advancement. He posits that within the next few decades, we will be capable of feats that would seem like magic to our grandparents. Dr. Noit points out that this phenomenon of rapid progress has been ongoing for at least the past 150 years, with each generation witnessing dramatic changes within their lifetimes.
Altman attributes the advent of the Intelligence Age to the success of deep learning. This AI technique, which mimics the neural networks of the human brain, has proven remarkably effective at learning from data and solving complex problems. As Dr. Noit notes, the idea of mimicking the human brain for AI has been around since the 1970s, but it's only recently that we've had the computational power and data to make it truly effective.
A key point in Altman's vision is the importance of making AI accessible to as many people as possible. He argues for the need to drive down the cost of computing and increase energy production to support widespread AI use. Dr. Noit finds this stance interesting, given OpenAI's reputation for being relatively closed in its approach to AI development.
Altman envisions a future where AI assists in solving major global challenges, from climate change to space colonization. He also foresees personalized AI tutors revolutionizing education and AI teams helping individuals create almost anything they can imagine. However, he acknowledges that this transition will not be without challenges, particularly in the labor market.
Despite the rise of AI, Altman and Dr. Noit both emphasize the enduring importance of human creativity and interaction. They draw parallels to fields like chess and craftsmanship, where human participation remains valued even when AI can outperform humans in certain tasks.
While Altman presents a highly optimistic view of the future, Dr. Noit adds a note of caution. He acknowledges the potential for societal strife during this transition and hopes that we can navigate these challenges to reach the promising future Altman envisions. Despite some reservations about OpenAI's practices, Dr. Noit believes that Altman's vision is "worth fighting for" and could lead to a world "unimaginably better than it is today."
The Industrial Revolution was a transformative period in humanhistory that began in the late 18th century and lasted until the mid-19th century. It was a time of significant technological, economic, and social change that marked the shift from manual labor to machine-based manufacturing and had a profound impact on the world.
The Industrial Revolution began in Britain and spread to other parts of the world, including Europe, North America, and Asia. It was characterized by the development of new machines and manufacturing techniques that enabled mass production and increased efficiency. This led to the growth of factories, the development of new industries, and the creation of new jobs.
Some of the key features of the Industrial Revolution include:
Mechanization: The introduction of machines and factories replaced manual labor and increased productivity.
Mass production: The ability to produce large quantities of goods quickly and cheaply led to the growth of industries such as textiles, iron, and steel.
New energy sources: The development of coal and steam power replaced traditional energy sources such as water and animal power.
The Industrial Revolution had a profound impact on society, leading to:
Changes in the way people lived and worked: The growth of cities and the development of factories led to changes in the way people lived and worked.
Increased economic growth: The Industrial Revolution led to rapid economic growth and the creation of new industries and jobs.
Improved standards of living: The increased productivity and efficiency of the Industrial Revolution led to improved standards of living for many people.
Social and environmental challenges: The Industrial Revolution also led to social and environmental challenges, such as pollution, poverty, and inequality.
Samuel Slater: An American inventor who developed the first successful cotton mill in the United States.
Eli Whitney: An American inventor who developed the cotton gin, a machine that simplified the process of harvesting cotton.
Overall, the Industrial Revolution was a transformative period in human history that had a profound impact on the world. It marked the beginning of a new era of industrialization and paved the way for the development of modern society.
The work done on real-time Linux has benefitted the open-source OS for years, but it was only this week that Linus Torvalds admitted its last piece into the mainline kernel. Exactly what took so long?
After 20 years, Real-Time Linux (PREEMPT_RT) is finally -- finally -- in the mainline kernel. Linus Torvalds blessed the code while he was at Open Source Summit Europe. Why is this a big deal? Let's start by explaining what a real-time operating system (RTOS) is and what it's good for.
What is an RTOS?
An RTOS is a specialized operating system designed to handle time-critical tasks with precision and reliability. Unlike general-purpose operating systems like Windows or macOS, an RTOS is built to respond to events and process data within strict time constraints, often measured in milliseconds or microseconds. As Steven Rostedt, a prominent real-time Linux developer and Google engineer, put it, "Real-time is the fastest worst-case scenario."
He means that the essential characteristic of an RTOS is its deterministic behavior. An RTOS guarantees that critical tasks will be completed within specified deadlines. Many people assume that RTOSs are for fast processes. They're not. Speed is not the point in RTOSs -- reliability is. This predictability is crucial in applications where timing is essential, such as industrial control systems, medical devices, and aerospace equipment.
One example of real-time operating systems in use today is VxWorks, which is used in NASA's Mars rovers to guide them, and in the Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft to control avionics systems, ensuring real-time responsiveness for flight controls. Another example is QNX Neutrino, which is widely used in cars for infotainment, and advanced driver-assistance systems such as anti-lock brakes.

"The Arizona project is proceeding as planned with good progress..."
Taiwan-based independent journalist Tim Culpan revealed that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's plant in Arizona has produced the first batch of Apple A16 chips using the 4 nm process used to make the same chips at TSMC's Taiwan factories.
The volume of the new A16 chips, first introduced with iPhone 14 Pro in 2022, will "ramp up considerably when the second stage of the Phase 1 fab is completed and production is underway, putting the Arizona project on track to hit its target for production in the first half of 2025," Culpan said, citing sources familiar with the situation.
In our view, it is notable that Apple has enough confidence in TSMC's new Arizona chip factory that it's willing to bet on new advanced mobile processors being built in America for the first time rather than building less critical components.
TSMC spokeswoman Nina Kao confirmed to Culpan, "The Arizona project is proceeding as planned with good progress."
Kao did not comment on specifics about clients or chips at the US-based factory in the southwestern part of the US.
It's unclear what Apple devices the new Arizona-made A16 chips will be installed in. This could be the latest iPad model or the next-generation iPhone SE.
"I can't tell you which Apple device these A16 chips will go into. One possibility is that they're slated for one of the upcoming iPads, though perhaps not the iPad Mini since Mark Gurman believes they're to be launched around October. Another likelihood is the next iteration of the iPhone SE, which makes sense since it's supposedly based on the iPhone 14 which uses the A16 processor and is expected next year," Culpan said.
He noted that the development is great news for made-in-America chips as the Biden administration plows tens of billions of taxpayer funds into CHIPs to rebuild the nation's chip manufacturing industry.
This is a BFD. TSMC Arizona is the marquee project of the US government's $39 billion CHIPS for America Fund under the CHIPS Act. Six months ago, I thought Apple might tap Arizona for a less-consequential chip like the H-series used in AirPods. I was surprised when I heard it was the A16. The fact that they went for the most-advanced chip they could manage on US soil, in terms of both technology and volume, shows Apple and TSMC want to start big," he said.
After the chips are manufactured in Arizona, they'll likely be sent to Foxconn factories in China or India, where low-cost labor will be used to assemble iPhones or iPads.
I've been using the iOS 18 beta for a couple of months, and the redesigned Photos app has become my biggest gripe with the new software update.
iOS 18 is finally here, and while there are some eye-catching updates like customizable home screens, there are also some eye-roll-worthy changes. For me, that includes the new Photos app.
Apple announced the new Photos app during its Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in June, touting it as "the biggest-ever redesign." When you first open the app on iOS 18, the changes are very apparent.
Apple added new collections, like Recent Days, People and Pets, and Trips, to sort your Photos. The company also modified the Photos app to work seamlessly with Apple Intelligence, which will be available on all iPhone 16 models and the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max over the next few months.
However, what Apple refers to as a "simplified layout" seems to be an unnecessarily complicated change for many using the Photos app. The previous tab design was replaced by collections that are automatically categorized by themes. It makes it difficult to find the popular Recently Saved photos and doesn't show all the photos on your device like it once did with an All Photos tab.
The Apple II, designed, hand-built, and introduced by Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs, the co-founders of Apple Inc., in 1977, was one of the most influential and popular personal computers of the 1970s and 1980s. This revolutionary machine played a significant role in launching the personal computer revolution, and its impact can still be felt today.
The Apple II was designed to be user-friendly, aesthetically pleasing, and easy to use, with a sleek, compact design featuring a beige plastic casing and a distinctive wedge-shaped keyboard. Its 1 MHz 8-bit MOS technology 6502 microprocessor was relatively fast for its time, making it an impressive feat of engineering.
The Apple II had a maximum of 48 KB of RAM, which was expandable to 64 KB with an additional memory expansion card. This was a significant amount of memory for a personal computer at the time, allowing users to run multiple applications simultaneously. The Apple II used cassette tapes for data storage, a common practice at the time, although later models also supported floppy disk drives.
The Apple II's graphics capabilities were impressive for its time, with a high-resolution mode featuring 280x192 pixels. It also had a built-in speaker and could produce simple sounds, making it a versatile machine for both work and play. The Apple II had several expansion slots, allowing users to add peripherals such as printers, modems, and additional storage devices, making it a highly customizable machine.
The Apple II was compatible with a wide range of software, including popular games, educational programs, and business applications. Many iconic software titles, such as VisiCalc (the first electronic spreadsheet) and Oregon Trail, were developed specifically for the Apple II. This software ecosystem helped establish the Apple II as a popular choice for both personal and professional use.
The Apple II's impact on the personal computer industry cannot be overstated. It helped establish Apple as a major player in the burgeoning industry and played a significant role in popularizing the concept of personal computing. The Apple II inspired a new generation of computer enthusiasts and helped pave the way for future innovations in the field.
The Apple II was widely used in homes, schools, and businesses throughout the 1980s, and it remained popular even after newer Apple computers were released. Although it is no longer in production, the Apple II remains an important part of computer history and a testament to the innovative spirit of Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs. Its legacy continues to inspire and influence computer design and development to this day.

TikTok is a social media app that has taken the world by storm, allowing users to create and share short-form videos that are typically between 15 to 60 seconds long. With over a billion active users worldwide, TikTok has become an extremely popular platform among younger generations, offering a unique and engaging way to express oneself, connect with others, and discover new content.
One of the key features that sets TikTok apart from other social media platforms is its ability to allow users to create and share videos using a variety of filters, effects, and musictracks. Users can record and edit their videos using the app's intuitive interface, and then share them with the TikTok community or on other social media platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.
In addition to creating and sharing videos, TikTok also allows users to discover new content through its "For You" page, which curates content based on their interests and preferences. This page is driven by an algorithm that learns a user's viewing habits and preferences, ensuring that they see content that is relevant and engaging to them.
TikTok has also become a platform for users to interact with each other, whether it's through liking, commenting, and responding to videos, or engaging with other users through duets, a feature that allows users to create a video together. This level of interactivity has helped to create a sense of community among TikTok users, who can connect with others who share similar interests and passions.
The app has also become a platform for entertainment, with users creating and sharing funny, creative, and entertaining content, often set to popular music. This has made TikTok a go-to platform for music lovers, who can use the app's vast music library to create and share their own music-based content.
TikTok has also given rise to a new form of influencer marketing, with brands and influencers using the app to reach a younger audience and promote products, services, and causes. The app's short-form video format and algorithm-driven feed make it an ideal platform for brands to reach a younger audience, who are increasingly turning to TikTok for entertainment, self-expression, and community building.
Some of the key features that have contributed to TikTok's success include its short-form content format, which makes it easy to consume and create content. The app's vast music library and ability to use popular songs have also made it a go-to platform for music lovers. Additionally, TikTok's augmented reality (AR) effects and filters have added a new level of creativity and interactivity to the app, allowing users to create and share unique and engaging content.
Overall, TikTok has become a significant player in the social media landscape, offering a unique and engaging platform for users to express themselves, connect with others, and discover new content. Its algorithm-driven feed, short-form content format, and vast music library have all contributed to its success, making it an app that is here to stay.
How did TikTok get its start? What is the history of the company?
TikTok, originally called Douyin, was founded in China in September 2016 by ByteDance, a Chinese technologycompany. ByteDance was founded in 2012 by Zhang Yiming, a Chinese entrepreneur and engineer. Initially, the company focused on developing news and content aggregation apps, but it soon shifted its focus to creating a short-form video-sharing platform.
Douyin, which means "vibrating sound" in Chinese, was launched in China in September 2016. The app quickly gained popularity among Chinese youth, who were drawn to its short-form, bite-sized videos and creative editing features.
In 2017, ByteDance acquired musical.ly, a popular short-form video-sharing app, for around $1 billion. Musical.ly was founded in 2014 by Alex Zhu and Luyu Yang, and it had gained a significant following among teenagers in the United States and Europe.
In August 2018, ByteDance merged Douyin with Musical.ly, rebranding the app as TikTok for international markets. The app was launched globally in October 2018, and it quickly gained popularity among younger generations.
In 2020, TikTok faced several challenges, including:
Dataprivacy concerns: TikTok faced criticism over its handling of user data, particularly in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal.
Competition from other social media platforms: TikTok faced increased competition from other social media platforms, such as Instagram and Snapchat, which also offered short-form video features.
Political tensions: TikTok faced scrutiny from the US government over its ties to the Chinese government and concerns about censorship and data security.
Despite these challenges, TikTok continued to grow and evolve, introducing new features such as live streaming, e-commerce integrations, and augmented reality effects.
Today, TikTok is one of the most popular social media platforms in the world, with over 1.5 billion active users worldwide. The company has expanded its offerings to include live streaming, e-commerce integrations, and augmented reality effects, and it continues to innovate and adapt to changing user preferences and trends.
T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert recently estimated that Starlink Cellular beta (aka Starlink Direct-to-Cell) could launch between late 2024 and early 2025.
“We think we’re on track for a beta program of the direct-satellite-to-cellular program that we announced a while back—it could start this year or early into next year,” Sievert told Jim Cramer.
SpaceX’s Starlink Directo-to-Cell website states that text services will be available starting in 2024. It estimates that Voice & Data and IoT will be available by 2025.
Drop-in replacements: The new vision-capable models are fully compatible with existing LLaMA 3.1 setups, requiring no code changes.
Edge Devices: Meta has also released tiny 1 billion and 3 billion parameter text-only models optimized for edge devices, such as smartphones, computers, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
Pre-trained and Instruction-tuned: The smaller models are ready for use, offering state-of-the-art performance in tasks like summarization, instruction following, and rewriting.
LLaMA Stack: Meta's first LLaMA stack distribution provides developers with a comprehensive toolset for working with LLaMA models, simplifying the development process.
Meta Unveils LLaMA 3.2: Revolutionizing AI Capabilities
In a significant breakthrough, Meta has released LLaMA 3.2, a cutting-edge AI model that boasts enhanced capabilities, including vision-based intelligence.
This latest iteration builds upon the impressive advancements of LLaMA 3.1, offering improved performance, efficiency, and versatility.
Vision Capabilities: LLaMA 3.2 introduces vision-based intelligence, enabling the model to process and understand images. This feature is supported by the 11 billion and 90 billion parameter versions.
Adapter Weights: Meta integrated image encoder into the language model using adapter weights, enabling image reasoning capabilities.
Cross-Attention layers: The adapter consists of cross-attention layers that feed image encoder representations into the language model.
Alignment Training: Meta employed alignment training, supervised fine-tuning, rejection sampling, and direct preference optimization to refine the model.
Synthetic data Generation: LLaMA 3.1 was used to generate synthetic data for question-answer pairs on tOP of in-domain images.
We just released our new Llama 3.2 models. Llama 3.2 is our first major vision model, which means it understands both images and text. To add image support to Llama, we trained a set of adapter weights that integrate with the existing 8B and 70B parameter text-only models to create 11B and 90B parameter models that understand images too. And we continue to improve intelligence—especially on reasoning—making these the most advanced models we’ve released to date.
We’re also releasing super-small 1B and 3B parameter models that are optimized to run on devices, like a smartphone or, eventually, a pair of glasses.
We believe open source AI is the right path forward. It’s more cost-effective, customizable, trustworthy, and arguably performant than the alternative. And we’ll continue to drive Llama forward responsibly with continuous improvements and new capabilities. Learn more about Llama 3.2.

SHORTS Feed
When opening the SHORTS feed the down arrow to go from the very first short to the next short never works the first time, i always have to swipe one time to the next and then the buttons work … and from time to time when swiping or hitting the buttons the feed jumps to the same short 2 or sometimes even more times before showing the next short while showing the next one for a second sometimes … another time the buttons just vanish after swiping to the next short or just don‘t do anything … sometimes the next short doesn‘t show at all or the menu on the left vanishes … sometimes the feed just jumps erratically … next short shows and then another one jumps in … sometimes a short that‘s not even in view is playing instead of the one in view … pretty unpredictable and no fun behaviour every time i check in to the shorts feed …

1/3🧵 Preparing a child for life is not an easy task, and every parent's intention is to do their best to ensure their happiness. But in many cases, excessive protection can lead to terrible consequences in the future. What can we do to make a child independent and capable of facing life's challenges?
2/3🧵 I believe that guiding them on right and wrong and encouraging independence would be the first steps. Allowing them to make mistakes and learn from them early in their lives is important for dealing with those inevitable occurrences throughout life. Excessive protection limits creativity and confidence, making them dependent and not stimulating personal growth.

1. Portfolio Allocation
225/280
Diversification is critical in crypto due to its volatility. I would allocate my portfolio into different categories to balance high-risk, high-reward tokens with more stable assets.
50% in Blue-Chip Cryptos (Stable, long-term holdings):
Ethereum has significant growth potential due to its role in the decentralized finance ecosystem.
30% in Growth Altcoins (Moderate to high-risk, high-reward):
15% in DeFi Projects (High-risk, high-reward):
5% in High-risk, Speculative tokens (Gambles on future tech):
2. Tactical Strategy
This could be trading around events like hard forks, major protocol upgrades, or broader market trends. A portion of Ethereum or an altcoin might be used for swing trading based on price action.
Example Portfolio Breakdown:
Follow-up questions in comments.

Cultural Variations:

Response in comments.

Expanded response in comments.
Some options may partially meet your needs:
Prompt: Is there an easy-to-use combinations of tools that achieve this result?
Summarized response: Here's an easy combination of tools to transcribe gameplay into text:
Workflow:
This setup offers flexibility without complex coding. While no single tool automates everything, combining these makes the process easier and more customizable for different games.
Expanded response in comments!
Here's an outline of tools that are relatively easy to use together, without needing to code from scratch:
1. OBS Studio + OpenAI (via API or GPT-based tools)
Ease of Setup: Some technical setup is required for object detection, but using Python and available libraries can streamline it. OpenAI’s API is easy to integrate for the text generation part.
2. Action Detection Models + GPT-4
Ease of Setup: Action recognition models like SlowFast have pre-trained versions, so they don’t require much tweaking. You can use Python to create a simple pipeline to pass recognized actions to GPT-4 for narration.
3. Game-Event Trackers + Video Summary AI
Combining Tools in a Simple Workflow:
With these steps, you can achieve a functional pipeline that’s modular and adaptable to different games without building it from scratch.

REACH! NO ASK NO GET - WITNESS UPDATE
2/

4/
I have proved myself here on the Hive block chain, I have no doubt about that. A lot of people know me, but not enough, a lot of people believe in me, but not enough.

Cool although I have no idea what you just said.
Ah okay. Got it now. This is something very cool then. Honing the direction and spreading the development out towards the edges.
Very cool indeed
Can this be done on VSCodium?
Can you install plug-ins on VSCodium? If so (I assume so), the answer is yes. Install the Continue plugin and insert your anthropic (or openai or groq) API key. https://www.continue.dev/
Yes, but for some reason, not all official Microsoft plugins work. Some need the VS Code version.
Give it a go and let me know how it turns out
Continue should not be an official microsoft plugin as far as I know
Ok, then!

Duolingo launches AI video calling to practice English, Spanish and French
Duolingo introduced video calls with Lily, one of its main characters, to practice conversation within the app this Tuesday (24). The new feature is powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and will be available to those who practice English, Spanish and French.
The new tool guarantees another step in the learning process through the application, which now offers a conversation system in addition to the lessons already available on the trail. According to the company in a note to Canaltech, the resource has technology to “simulate natural dialogues” and offers a “personalized and interactive practice environment”.
#newsonleo #ai #technology

Shock-proofing supply chain with AI: a $62 billion opportunity

Connected fitness startup EGYM is ramping up with $200m at a $1.2B+ valuation

Getting healthy is big business these days. Now a startup that’s come up with a unique approach leveraging tech to help people with their exercise regimes is announcing a big round of funding, putting some weight behind its own push for growth.
#newsonleo #technology #egym

Automattic sends WP Engine its own cease-and-desist over WordPress trademark infringement

#newsonleo #wordpress #technology

"Hope you think it was worth the wait," Sam Altman, OpenAI's co-founder and CEO, wrote in an X post on Tuesday.
It's an increasingly competitive space for OpenAI, which is backed by Microsoft.
For the past couple weeks, Google has been releasing its own Gemini Live voice feature in English on Android devices. And on Monday, Reuters reported that Meta will introduce celebrity voices later this week that can be accessed through Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.
Reddit is bringing AI-powered, automatic translation to dozens of new countries

Reddit is bringing machine learning-powered translations to more than 35 new locales in Europe, Asia and Latin America in a move designed to open the largely English-centric social network to more users.
#reddit #translation #newsonleo #technolgoy #ai

Salesforce snatches up Zoomin, a tool for organizing company knowledge
Salesforce has bought out Zoomin, a startup developing a tool to organize all the knowledge and documentation across an organization.
Salesforce is on a buying spree.
After snatching up data management firm Own earlier in the month, Salesforce today announced its plans to buy Zoomin, an enterprise knowledge platform. Zoomin — which we’ve covered a handful of times before — unifies a company’s docs, like product user guides and tutorials, in one portal.
#newsonleo #salesforce #technology #zoomin
That's smart. Salesforce's current solution for knowledge base management and automation is functional, but it requires a lot of manual configuration and can be tricky to work out. This should make things easier
Yeah. Of course, the big get bigger. This is why we need to do all we can to distribute things.

What is Web 3.0?
Here is a rewritten version with more details:
Web 3.0, also known as the third generation of the World Wide Web, is a term used to describe the next phase of the internet's evolution. This decentralized, blockchain-based, and AI-driven Internet aims to provide a more secure, transparent, and user-centric experience. The key characteristics of Web 3.0 include:
This means that data is stored and managed by a network of nodes, rather than a single central authority. decentralization enables greater autonomy, security, and resilience, as well as reduced reliance on centralized systems.
Some of the potential benefits of Web 3.0 include:
However, Web 3.0 is still in its early stages, and its development is ongoing. As the technology evolves, we can expect to see more widespread adoption and innovative applications across various industries.
Businesses compete by building better services, not on the network effects. The web captures the network effects.
There is always a network effect, the only question is where it is captured (and by whom).
Visualizing The Extreme Cost Of Training AI Models
The cost of training AI models has exploded in just the past year...
The cost of training AI models has exploded in just the past year, according to data released by the research firm Epoch AI.
This development aptly shows how much more complex and capable AI models have gotten in a short time span.
#newsonleo #ai #technology

Airtel fights spam with AI, seeks WhatsApp oversight in India
Bharti Airtel, India's second-largest telecom operator, is rolling out an AI-powered spam detection solution to all its customers.
Bharti Airtel, India’s second-largest telecom operator, launched a free AI-powered spam detection system for all customers on Wednesday, aiming to curb the country’s raging unwanted calls and messages while also calling for stricter regulation of WhatsApp and other messaging platforms.
#newsonleo #airtel #spam #technology #hotel

Google files EU antitrust complaint accusing Microsoft of stifling cloud competition
#google #microsoft #lawsuit #newsonleo #technology

WhatFix raises a whopping $125M for its in-app user guides
WhatFix, a company developing a platform that guides people through using web and desktop apps, has closed a $125 million equity funding round.
Digital transformation — upgrading a company’s legacy apps and processes with new tech — has long been a buzzy and lucrative business. But the pandemic supercharged the market.
#newsonleo #whatfix #technology

Google's revised ad targeting plan triggers fresh competition concerns in UK
What is going on with Google's long-touted migration to an alternative adtech stack (aka its Privacy Sandbox proposal)? What indeed.
What is going on with Google’s long-touted migration to an alternative adtech stack (aka its Privacy Sandbox proposal)? What indeed. The entire multi-year endeavour to reshape the commercial web looks dangerously close to being killed off after the latest intervention by the U.K.’s antitrust regulator, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).
#google #newsonleo #technology #advertising

#newsonleo #fbi #honecapital

Artificial Intelligence: Our Days (Probably) Aren't Numbered
Maybe it’s a law of history: every innovation faces opposition...
Maybe it’s a law of history: every innovation faces opposition. The early nineteenth-century Luddites wrecked textile machinery because it took their jobs. Our innate suspicion extends to trade, too, which is, after all, just another technology for turning one thing into another. Apartheid-era white South Africans opposed efforts to modify the Colour Bar because they feared that African workers would take their jobs and reduce them to “uncivilized” standards of living. Protectionists want to shield their fellow Americans from foreign competition.
#technology #ai

"Seems Like Magic" - Sam Altman Says ChatGPT Will Bring Unimaginable Prosperity, Fix Climate
#newsonleo #samaltman #openai #ai #technology
The CEO also boasted that his company’s technology would be capable of creating more powerful versions of itself within a matter of decades that will accelerate humanity’s scientific progress “across the board.”
Deep learning worked
Altman’s premise appears to be based on the recent debut of the company’s “o1” AI model, which is purportedly capable of reasoning through problems that its previous models struggled to solve.
Many of the company’s detractors have claimed that deep learning, the specific type of AI that powers models such as ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, can’t be scaled to create human-level artificial intelligence.
In his latest blog post, however, Altman skewers that idea outright:
Per Altman, this appears to mean humanity is on the brink of an area of a new “Intelligence Age” where AI systems will begin to solve Earth’s biggest problems.
Unimaginable prosperity:

US Proposes New Rule Banning Chinese Tech In Connected Vehicles Over National security risks
Here's more from the White House:

Noit.
The Dawn of a New Era
Altman argues that we are entering a new epoch in human history: the Intelligence Age. This era is characterized by the fusion of human and artificial intelligence, promising unprecedented levels of prosperity and capability. He draws parallels to previous transformative periods such as the Industrial Age and the Information Age, suggesting that the Intelligence Age will bring about changes of similar or greater magnitude.
Accelerated Progress and Magical Capabilities
A central theme in Altman's blog is the accelerating pace of technological advancement. He posits that within the next few decades, we will be capable of feats that would seem like magic to our grandparents. Dr. Noit points out that this phenomenon of rapid progress has been ongoing for at least the past 150 years, with each generation witnessing dramatic changes within their lifetimes.
The Power of Deep learning
Altman attributes the advent of the Intelligence Age to the success of deep learning. This AI technique, which mimics the neural networks of the human brain, has proven remarkably effective at learning from data and solving complex problems. As Dr. Noit notes, the idea of mimicking the human brain for AI has been around since the 1970s, but it's only recently that we've had the computational power and data to make it truly effective.
Democratization of AI
A key point in Altman's vision is the importance of making AI accessible to as many people as possible. He argues for the need to drive down the cost of computing and increase energy production to support widespread AI use. Dr. Noit finds this stance interesting, given OpenAI's reputation for being relatively closed in its approach to AI development.
Potential Benefits and Challenges
Altman envisions a future where AI assists in solving major global challenges, from climate change to space colonization. He also foresees personalized AI tutors revolutionizing education and AI teams helping individuals create almost anything they can imagine. However, he acknowledges that this transition will not be without challenges, particularly in the labor market.
The Human Element
Despite the rise of AI, Altman and Dr. Noit both emphasize the enduring importance of human creativity and interaction. They draw parallels to fields like chess and craftsmanship, where human participation remains valued even when AI can outperform humans in certain tasks.
Conclusion: An Optimistic but Cautious Outlook
While Altman presents a highly optimistic view of the future, Dr. Noit adds a note of caution. He acknowledges the potential for societal strife during this transition and hopes that we can navigate these challenges to reach the promising future Altman envisions. Despite some reservations about OpenAI's practices, Dr. Noit believes that Altman's vision is "worth fighting for" and could lead to a world "unimaginably better than it is today."

20 years later, real-time Linux makes it to the kernel
The work done on real-time Linux has benefitted the open-source OS for years, but it was only this week that Linus Torvalds admitted its last piece into the mainline kernel. Exactly what took so long?
After 20 years, Real-Time Linux (PREEMPT_RT) is finally -- finally -- in the mainline kernel. Linus Torvalds blessed the code while he was at Open Source Summit Europe. Why is this a big deal? Let's start by explaining what a real-time operating system (RTOS) is and what it's good for.
#linux #technology #newsonleo

Apple A16 Chips Are Now Made In America
"The Arizona project is proceeding as planned with good progress..."
Taiwan-based independent journalist Tim Culpan revealed that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's plant in Arizona has produced the first batch of Apple A16 chips using the 4 nm process used to make the same chips at TSMC's Taiwan factories.
#newsonleo #apple #chips #unitedstates #technology
He noted that the development is great news for made-in-America chips as the Biden administration plows tens of billions of taxpayer funds into CHIPs to rebuild the nation's chip manufacturing industry.
After the chips are manufactured in Arizona, they'll likely be sent to Foxconn factories in China or India, where low-cost labor will be used to assemble iPhones or iPads.
My biggest regret with upgrading my iPhone to iOS 18 (and I'm not alone)
I've been using the iOS 18 beta for a couple of months, and the redesigned Photos app has become my biggest gripe with the new software update.
iOS 18 is finally here, and while there are some eye-catching updates like customizable home screens, there are also some eye-roll-worthy changes. For me, that includes the new Photos app.
Apple announced the new Photos app during its Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in June, touting it as "the biggest-ever redesign." When you first open the app on iOS 18, the changes are very apparent.
#apple #ios #technology

What was the Apple 2 computer?
How many Apple 2 computers were sold? What years were they available?

Total sales: approximately 5.2 million units
The Apple II was available in various models and revisions throughout its production run, including:
The Apple II was discontinued in 1993, when Apple introduced the Power Macintosh line of computers.
What was the price for the Apple 2 when they were sold?
The prices for the Apple II varied over the years and depending on the model and configuration. Here are some approximate price ranges for new Apple II computers when they were first released:
It's worth noting that these prices are approximate and may have varied depending on the region, retailer, and any bundles or promotions that were available.

What is Tik Tok?
TikTok is a social media app that has taken the world by storm, allowing users to create and share short-form videos that are typically between 15 to 60 seconds long. With over a billion active users worldwide, TikTok has become an extremely popular platform among younger generations, offering a unique and engaging way to express oneself, connect with others, and discover new content.
One of the key features that sets TikTok apart from other social media platforms is its ability to allow users to create and share videos using a variety of filters, effects, and music tracks.
TikTok, originally called Douyin, was founded in China in September 2016 by ByteDance, a Chinese technology company.
TikTok's rapid growth was fueled by its unique features, such as:
In 2019, TikTok surpassed 1 billion active users worldwide, making it one of the fastest-growing social media platforms in history.
In 2020, TikTok faced several challenges, including:
Despite these challenges, TikTok continued to grow and evolve, introducing new features such as live streaming, e-commerce integrations, and augmented reality effects.
Today, TikTok is one of the most popular social media platforms in the world, with over 1.5 billion active users worldwide. The company has expanded its offerings to include live streaming, e-commerce integrations, and augmented reality effects, and it continues to innovate and adapt to changing user preferences and trends.

Starlink Cellular Beta launch estimate from T-Mobile
#technology #tmobile #starlink
T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert recently estimated that Starlink Cellular beta (aka Starlink Direct-to-Cell) could launch between late 2024 and early 2025.
“We think we’re on track for a beta program of the direct-satellite-to-cellular program that we announced a while back—it could start this year or early into next year,” Sievert told Jim Cramer.
SpaceX’s Starlink Directo-to-Cell website states that text services will be available starting in 2024. It estimates that Voice & Data and IoT will be available by 2025.

Key features of LLaMA 3.2
Technical Advancements
Alignment Training: Meta employed alignment training, supervised fine-tuning, rejection sampling, and direct preference optimization to refine the model.
Implications and Future Directions
From Meta blog:

2/ The incident happened in Zagreb on Saturday night when Mrakužić assaulted the man and damaged his car with a baseball bat. Man was lightly injured in the incident, after which Mrakužić was arrested and sent to detention centre where will be held for next month during formal criminal investigation.
The incident, according to Mrakužić's own claims at the court, stemmed from learning that 36-year old man, described as "personal trainer", intends to meet with Mrakužić's 47-year old common law wife.

#threadstorm #outreach
2/3🧵 I believe that guiding them on right and wrong and encouraging independence would be the first steps. Allowing them to make mistakes and learn from them early in their lives is important for dealing with those inevitable occurrences throughout life. Excessive protection limits creativity and confidence, making them dependent and not stimulating personal growth.
3/3🧵 It's a psychological challenge on both sides. I have a son who will soon turn 13, and I feel firsthand how it is to open my arms and let him fly for a while. But when something goes wrong, I'm there to help him make the most of the situation.
