Though I don’t specifically make plans for 2022, I kinda want to relive my childhood years where I spent it doing sports. Swimming was one of my favorite sports other than baseball, basketball, and motocross. Fun fact, I was in a competitive basketball and swimming league though it was just the regional league.
I used to be a regular swimmer. But after highschool, I quit swimming and never returned to the water until recently. I started doing it again as I got access to swimming pools and often stayed at places with swimming pools.
But what specifically prompted me to start regular swimming is when I signed up for the gym early this month. I only went about 4-5 times to the gym because I don’t really like being in a public gym. It feels uncomfortable surrounded by people and having to share equipment where people don’t even wipe the equipment after use. None of the people there wear masks, which I think is quite risky. And knowing that the place where I go has a swimming pool, it tempted me to swim. Plus not to mention, I read the virus doesn’t transmit through water.
So, I started swimming again about two weeks ago. It was daunting at first to swim after years of long layoff. I didn’t even have a proper swimming suit that made me buy a new one. I also started making plans to make the swimming even fun and challenging.
My swimming session is about 60 minutes to 90 minutes 5x/week. My current goal is to be able to swim 100 yards. Unfortunately, the pool is only for short distance swimming which is around 50 yards. For now, I can only do 25 yards freestyle and breastroke.
Yesterday during my swimming session, I didn’t wear swim glasses and made my eyes really red and it was painful to open. So, I decided to get swimming glasses. In the place, they also sell various sports wear and equipment. And today, I decided to get the glasses. I was looking for something standard to prevent my eyes from getting red which I suspect is due the chlorine. There were so many options but I ended up getting the glasses from Speedo which also has a UV filter. I chose black despite the fact that I think the red one was cool too. It comes with a cool case too which makes the glasses look more elegant and fancy.
Inside the pool, I think they really added too much chlorine that even after swimming my hair smells more like chlorine than the shampoo I was using. But after swimming, I feel refreshed and happier, which I think is okay all things considered.
When it comes to any sports and almost anything, I tend to get into a competitive league but get bored quickly as I reach certain mastery. So, I want to change that these days. Instead of just being satisfied once I reach a certain point of mastery, I want to be really good at it.
Have you been getting back into any of your hobbies or any other sport?

I used to go swimming in 2nd to 7th year at school. It gave me a big advantage, as others from my class weren't so great at swimming, and this was the only thing I was good at in P.E.
But already after first year I actually wanted to quit the swimming training thing (mom wouldn't let me tho until I went to drama class in 8th grade).
Anyway I hadn't even swam for fun for a couple of years and this summer I went to a small lake one time. I felt so out of shape, I forgot how to breathe properly over the 😬
OMG I forgot to go back here. After a long pause for swimming that was the case for me as well. But now that I do it five times a week, it's getting better and I can stay longer inside the water without catching a breath. Swimming is really nice, I weighed in today and ended up losing 12 post and didn't realize in less than a week too! Have you been thinking to go back swimming?
Not really, I'm lately more interested in trying out kickboxing, but that also has stayed as just a thought. It's difficult to find time for any certain activities next to a 9-5 job and a kindergarten kid 😅
Hopefully you can find the time! a kindergarten kid sounds like a huge responsibility and also time and energy consuming; probably equals of an hour workout dealing with them 😅
Rooting for you as you get back into swimming again! 🤗🤗 You have amazing endurance and I am totally amazed because I could not swim with that distance 🤗 I hope you take care of yourself and you are well and safe!
I thought that distance is really short hehe. And thank you! did you get into any fun new hobby recently?
For the past year, I've been into yoga and it's honestly very addicting!! I also go to the gym from time to time🤗 It's nice that we both have very active hobbies.. helps us to stay fit and healthy!
I want to pick up back swimming too. I did a very basic course many years ago. I didn’t do much in terms of mastering a particular technique but I moved from having a fear of swimming to becoming fairly comfortable in the water and at the deep end. Though basic, it was amazing to see how toned my body became and felt. I want that back! Lol! I’m sure it will take much more work now. It’s said the virus doesn’t spread in water but the rates
are high now where I’m at so I don’t want to venture out just yet. Also I’m a bit worried about the chlorine damaging my hair. I don’t like wearing goggles but have to protect my eyes as well.
I used to fear water as well because silly urban tales over the public pools. One notable story that I still remember is about drowned spirits who could drag you down with them. The virus rates is quite high but there's advantage that I see, since a lot of people are afraid, those who go outside become lesser hence places aren't packed. Sure there's risk but I decided back in 2020 that I can't live my life just being a hermit. Hopefully, you can get back into swimming and maybe you'll have your own private pool, that would be sick!
Private pool sounds good. Hehe!
Those tales would drive fear in anyone eh. You’re right, while we need to be safe, living like a hermit isn’t the way to go about it.
I grew up with such promising beaches around me but I am not a good swimmer. My friends here in Cebu are quick to assume that I am a good swimmer but kudos to you for being good at it. Are we expecting some swimming lessons from you? 😊
I hope so! I just need to get underwater camera sorted and I'd love to have my swimming session recorded. I really can't swim at an open sea but I am good with pool. For some reason, I generally dislike swimming at the sea/ocean but I like snorkeling, it's really fun.
Snorkeling is the best. Though I can't do not for long but I enjoyed it the most. 😊
I love swimming, I haven't swam in a while because i really don't have access to a pool anymore.
While i was studying, i got access to the university pool for free because i played chess for them. It was there I learnt to conquer my fears with water. I did swim through my entire 4 years, at least twice a week.
This pool you are practicing with is short anyway. It migh be too stressful getting back into gear. I wonder how it will be for me. I use to swim 50 meters and sometimes 100meters then.
I know right! It can be really annoying, it affects the eyes alot. I love to swim when they clean the pool, However, the chlorine effects could be a real danger. Glad to see you've gotten some glasses!
Please do well, to tell us how it goes!
I have contacted my tennis coach, I might just go back to practicing and playing again... Non professionally actually.
!PIZZA
I love swimming! I spent several summers as a kid and young 20 something going out swimming a lot. It’s so much fun! Fantastic exercise as well, though I did a lot of swimming in lakes but we don’t have crazy animals that will eat or kill you where I’m swimming so it’s a little different lol.
Pools are generally gross places lol so they have to maximize the chlorine content to balance the other lovely stuff that ends up in the pool. Salt water pools would be good too but they are expensive and hard to find unless you go to a super fancy and expensive gym.
If there's one thing I hate is lake, river and beach water. I watched too many documentaries about bacterias and possible death just by swimming into the lake. I mean though we can die anytime but catching up some nasty bacteria and worms from lake are probably the worst. And yeah, some river here has crocs and giant fishes that could harm you. I really would never trust the lake, river or beach here unless the water is really pristine and you can see everything around. Otherwise, do not swim.
That's why, I avoided the pool during peak hours. I go to the pool either very early in the morning or very late in the evening. Now that I am more comfortable, I swim only in the athletic's pool. It has better filtering system and seems the water is different from the beginners pool.
I opened this post thinking you were gonna rant about swimming. Never have I visited this little corner at HIVE. Today was the first time since I had to rant myself. Nice, you picked up something from the past. Hope you gonna make your goals. 100 yards is like 90 meters? Should be possible in 60 minutes... or am I missing something?
I used to swim in lakes, canals and rivers. When I was a kid, child, teenager age. Since then, hardly swim. Sometimes when on some beach but that doesn't happen too often. I usually stay in some chair when others do the proper beach thing. Maybe next time, I shall start building sandcastles again. Or something that kinda looks like a sandcastle.
For years am thinking to pick up drawing and oil painting again. Must be like 30 to 35 years ago I've done that last... except a few drawing attempts of which I shared one or two at HIVE over the last few years. Just a week or so ago I was reminded of my wish to start oil painting again through a conversation with someone from Serbia. The circumstances didn't change from a week ago though, I need to find the proper time and also find proper space to start messing around with oil paint again. I don't think this will happen anytime soon, but the more I think about it, the higher the chance I'm gonna actively search for solutions to the two things I mentioned: time and space.
Most swimming pools here are 25 meters long and to get that 100 meters or close to 100 yards, is 4x swimming through 25 meters. I did that today for about 30 minutes. However, when I first started it and at the moment this post was made, I was just starting and it was daunting. I was out of breath just by doing 25 yards. Now, after regularly swimming, that distance doesn't seem daunting anymore. I am less afraid of the water too and feeling a little less cold in the colder pool.
There's always time if you make it, that's what I believe. Maybe you don't need to dedicate full 60 minutes but 20 minutes at a time? If I don't make time, I guess I wouldn't be back into swimming. And good luck with your oil pointing, pretty sure you'll find the time and space.
This corner is pretty fun. I always post my talk/update and not so much rants here. I like the talking aspect of this community where we can have conversation and the content still readable even after 7 days. Hope to see you dropping by here often!
Ah cool, quickly you got in shape 🏊♀️
Time can always be found indeed. Just priorities needs to be set 🙃
Drawing for like 20 or 30 minutes is possible, but oil painting requires longer periods.
Seems I spend the time I could create on HIVE rather than on drawing though. I think I'll continue for the moment like this, but who knows what tomorrow brings 🥳
It's an interesting corner indeed and will also try the 'talk' side rather than the 'rant' side of things.
