TikTok’s fate in the United States is now in the hands of the Supreme Court (which is a scary thought) and things are not looking good for the app.The Supreme Court on Friday heard oral arguments over the law that could ban TikTok in the United States. The law, signed by President Joe Biden in April, requires TikTok to be sold off from its China-based parent company, ByteDance, or face a US ban. Form the reports, the hearing did not seem to go well for TikTok. It sure feels like it is more likely than ever that the ban will go into effect starting on January 19. Most of the justices appeared likely to uphold the law. On TikTok's side their lawyers the right to free speech.

So What Does a TikTok Ban Look Like?
It could mean the app becomes unavailable in the app stores. It is widely expected that the US government will force app store operators, like Google and Apple, to remove TikTok from their platforms. While TikTok itself hinted that if the court doesn’t block the law, it will be shutting down the servers for TikTok which will make the app unavailable for its more than 170 million monthly American users. There’s no precedent for the US government blocking a major social media platform and on how the government plans to enforce it remains unclear, but it's a wild time for sure.

So now the reason why I wanted to talk about this situation. How can Hive benefit from a TikTok ban? If TikTok is banned, millions of users would seek alternative platforms for their short-form video content and social interactions. Hive can position itself as an ideal destination for these users seeking familiarity. Hive has built its platform around principles of transparency and user control.By promoting these values aggressively during this time, Hive can effectively attract those disillusioned by larger platforms. Hive's unique selling proposition lies in its community driven focus emphasizing creators' voices. I think if we start a campaign of promotion we maybe able to get some users and try to make the best of a bad situation. To capture the attention of new users migrating from TikTok, Hive could accelerate development around innovative content creation tools that enable short-form videos.I know I don't have the skill set, but other here do. I'm hoping the post gets others thinking about of we can capitalize.

I would be happy if TikTok disappears, lot of dumb stuff there 🤣

There’s a lot of good too. It’s a pretty good app if you give it time.

I personally don't agree with the fact they are trying to ban it for multiple reasons. They tried to force an experimental "vaccine" on everyone but now they are going to protect us from a popular social media app? Weird stuff. I'm not on TikTok but it is crazy.

That being said I do agree people will be looking for other platforms to hang out on. I think they will mainly flow back to Instagram and Snapchat in the United States and also more to YouTube shorts.

For HIVE / InLeo I think it could position itself as a place for more people to hang out on that might gravitate towards Rumble, X, The Arena, Truth Social but it really has to be marketed. The grass roots campaigns can only go so far.

Plus I recently onboarded a guy from Arena that actually has 20,000 followers on DeSo. He put up a test post and instantly got downvoted which negated my upvote and needless to say he wasn't interested in posting again or telling anyone about the platform. There are a lot of people in control that don't want to see it grow as strange as that might sound.

The nice part about this project is its user that down vote. It an organization so it's up to the community to decide on content

Yeah theoretically but if people get stomped out from the get go and it goes unnoticed they just leave and spend time on other platforms.

Imagine getting on any other platform and posting a picture you took of a fire station and then getting flagged / downvoted. It isn't like it was some shocking picture with nudity or something controversial.

Wow, I think this is a great insight on how to turn a challenging situation into an opportunity! Cool!

It will interesting to see how this all plays out. I would not want to be the politician that kills the app.

I think people are not liking it much in our country too

I don't like tiktok also.

uh oh.. tik tok not looking very good. 😉🤙

No its not...

Sadly, I don't think HIVE is anywhere on the radar of people who might be looking for other platforms to use. I wish it was, but no from what I have seen. I'm actually not a fan of the ban as much as I hate Tik Tok. I don't blame them if they shut down the servers. Probably save them a bit of money.

I agree it's sadly the case. We are still very niche, but need to figure out how to come more main stream. The Red Not app seems to be the winner. People are using an app they can't read over going back to Facebook or instagram

Very interesting. I'm honestly not interested in signing up for a new social media app right now. I have been trying to get my in-laws to switch over to Signal for our g pup communication, but that is like pulling teeth with them. I just want something cross platform that offers encrypted messaging.

I hear that my parents a bit tech challenged. I use whatsapp but after the Meta talk lately I think I also need to figure out a new app...

I think all the one decent ones are still owned by big tech and you are going to end up with the same problems. I don't remember who owns Signal, but it's someone big I think.

It was really necessary to ban the TikTok app, its users are doing a lot of immoral things.

As much as I dislike the whole concept of the Tok - the most dangerous aspect of it is what a lot of people are completely ignoring. The government has NO business in this, and having them come in and strong arm it is a really dangerous and bad precedent that is being set. The markets are the best ways to get rid of it. American companies can lobby and prove how dangerous it is to the phone companies and internet providers and work to limit or discourage its use. It needs to be kept in the private sector getting rid of something like this, absolutely not the government.

Having the government come in and do something that’s not been their job is going to have long lasting ramifications that we will see unfold in 5-10 years when someone does something that is great for citizens and people it not in their best financial interest and they will use this precedent to destroy it

It’s all a bunch of smoke and mirrors anyway - it’s going to go down to the last minute and something is going to swoop in and save it and send it on its merry way to go and continue harvesting all of the data about people.

I hope we get some people from the situation, I just don’t know how many.

Something needs to be done. I personally I love tiktok and I don't want it to disappear

Its a Social Media platform. Banning isnt the solution. If banned the copies of it will flood the market. They need to find better solution.
