If you recall, it kicked off with the Kite Festival and moved on to the Cherry Blossom Festival and later the next week, the parade and the Sakura Matsuri – Japanese Street Festival. There were so many events in between, souvenirs and even pretzels from the rogue faux vendor if you got lucky!

Laid all out and ready to roll. I caught these horns all lined up and ready to go as I perused the pre-parade activities. Everyone was warming up and having fun.
Clowning around a little bit. I saw these guys all over town for the rest of the day.

I have been to some of the NYC parades over the years, but the streets are so tight and the crowds can get crazy, so I find myself less wanting to go to them these days, but this spring and summer I plan to catch as many of our local smaller one sin Milford this year.
Well thank you so much for that! I actually think it's because I love the parade so much and I love capturing the fun, although that is not always possible. It looks better in my mind then it comes out in photos sometimes.
I know exactly what you are saying about the streets of New York City as I have been to many of their parades and their New Year's celebrations. I think I got frostbite one too many times out there waiting in the rain or the snow or the ice or all of them together at one time. I have thrown in the towel into that one and will only go to a New Year's celebration if it is from the balcony of a hotel room. As there are no balconies in the area, you know that will never happen again. LOL
The crabs to go crazy and I don't mind so much going to the ones in Washington DC as they seem to be spread out more, making it not seem quite as crowded. I'm with you on catching some of the smaller ones this year because honestly, the crowds seem to be more animated because they are not so agitated.
Yes if its something you love I to find the photos they are just that much more special, I went once for New years at Times Square i got there early about 5PM and it was far to crowded for me so I got the heck out of there and never will do that again
I much prefer the smaller ones they may not be as fancy but they have a nice homely charm to them
Oh, trust me! I've grown up and away from needing to be there. I used to love going there and I actually got a big adrenaline rush from being in that crowd. I could still do it but I'm over freezing to death! I've gotten wet and thrown up on, and I think that I have pretty much eliminated that from my to do list.
NOw a days I have to admit I am happy enough to watch it on TV nice and warm at home LOL
Really its just another day, made into such a big thing LOL or perhaps that just my excuse to avoid the chaos of New Years in Times Square LOL

Wow you always raise the bar. Every single week I am stunned and blown away. I really like how you capture action in the shots, just amazing. Clearly it is always sunny and everyone is of good cheer and having a great time. Super post!
Thank you so much for your always kind comments and raising the bar is giving me far too much credit. But thank you for that. I do like photographing parades and I know I'm kind of weird that way come up but I really do like parades. Most people I know are so over them and don't like to even attend them oh, but I can tell you that if there's a parade, I'll be there. I'll even be early so I can get a good seat. Although truth be told, most times I am trolling the perimeters, looking for something different. It was a beautiful day and a great time was had by all.
Would it make you feel better if I told you that you're going to have rain and thunder today? There is even a 60 to 70% chance that we might have a tornado touchdown. So Camelot Has Fallen. As an aside oh, I haven't seen anything yet, but there's still hope.

Lovely day. I just wanted to ask, was it a cold day out?
Believe it or not, it's incredibly beautiful, which is kind of a good thing because those little girls had very little on! In actuality, it was close to 80 degrees Fahrenheit oh, so it was nice and warm in probably they all worked up a sweat. It's not a good time of year just as its turning from Winter to Spring and many times its spikes into the higher Heat and then goes down a little bit. All in all it was a beautiful day and the parade was pretty amazing.

Today it went to 16°C (~61°F) as I took my boys to a traveling fun fair "Tivoli Sariola", that is currently visiting Lahti. We had fun.
Next, we are cooking some lamb moussaka with Vera. (It'll probably be a late night dinner again since it takes such a long time to make.)

What an amazing and cheerful report! I got known about your Cherry Blossom Festival from the video of my friend on FB. It looks really awesome. It was a bit windy, and cherry petals flew in tge air like a magic snow 💛
But I did not know about parade - it is so bright and festive! I love your parades in US, I wish we have them here more often, these costumes, movements, music bring a holuday spirit to everyone. This is what we need very much.

How wonderful that you got to know about the cherry blossoms from your friend! I am sure the video it's much nicer than pictures. I personally like every action of the video but I don't really like taking video too much. It is magical when the cherry blossom start falling to the Earth, just like snow. They do have a wonderful parade and a Japanese Street Festival and there are many other things going on for 2 weeks all tied into the Cherry Blossom Festival. It actually starts off with the Kite Festival, which I posted on I believe 2 weeks ago. At this moment there is a lot of holiday spirit and we do need a little bit of that. Easter will be coming and that will be another whole holiday that the Washington DC area will celebrate, in style.

You did it! You've convinced me that we want to be a part of this two-week celebration so I'm moving it to the top of my bucket list after 2020 (our fiftieth anniversary). See you there in 2021!
Congratulations! You finally made up your mind to move Washington DC to the top of your bucket list! Well, the cherry blossoms anyway. Just keep in mind that the beginning of April is one of the best dates to shoot for. Only because the Cherry Blossom Festival will fall into there somewhere and if you have to do anything in advance it's the safest date.
It is always a great time and I have never been disappointed. That comes from someone who never misses it. Congratulations ahead of time for nearing your 50th anniversary! That is quite an accomplishment! And yes! I expect to see you in 2021!

I have not been there but my husband went twice while in high school...that was a long time ago. We wonder why we never went before or took the kids. I made a note that you are the one to contact as we get closer to the date even though I didn't need to...I'm not going to forget you are the one that made the festivals and trees look so beautiful and something not to be missed.
I am surprised, but, then not really. People who tend to travel the world will sometimes skip the obvious here in the States. I am totally guilty of that and am in the process of remedying some of that. :)
I am glad you will make the effort to come and actually, there is no bad time to visit, so if you find yourself in the neighborhood before that, just remember that everything they have here (almost everything) is free. All of the Smithsonians, Art Galleries and all of the monuments - plus the obvious, like the White House, Library of Congress, the Capitol, the list goes on!
Come on down! You won't be sorry!

Well thank you so much Svetlana! It was a wonderful parade and the Cherry Blossom Festival was really a nice one this year! You know, it is all dependent on the weather and this year it was very cooperative. Because it was just a tiny bit cooler on some days, the cherry blossoms lasted the entire 2 weeks and Beyond. That was a very unusual but I am very grateful. I wasn't sure if you celebrated Easter tomorrow or if you celebrate it on the Orthodox which is next week of course. But, I am going to assume that it is next week. If not, Happy Easter! I am covering all of my bases here. It was an awesome parade, Traci! I should admit right up front that I love parades and I have never seen one that wasn't amazing. Does that make a difference? I am so glad that you could see the energy that was out there, sometimes it is hard to transfer onto the photo.
There is always such an energy to the crowd and I have found that the best part of the parade is in the pre parade activities, with the people getting ready and setting out all the instruments and lining everything up and actually the state of confusion that seems to run through the people. It makes for better shots in so many ways and in the end it all comes together to look like there is no trouble to it.

how do you hear about these diff events?
Well, I live in the area and they always have the events in the newspaper or online. Like this: look here And I also look ahead of time for things like the Memorial Day events, Veterans Day, Fourth of July - they have a Folklife Festival then, Kite Festival... etc. It is always a lot of fun and I spend as much time down there as possible.
All the museums are free and so are so many of the other things. The Kennedy Center is free every day at 6 pm.... nobody can ever say that culture isn't available to them!

We did! Thank you! I celebrated yesterday as I am Catholic. Thank you for the always nice comments, and it was such a perfect day yesterday!
The sun was shining, it was warm and we had an easter egg hunt and a ham dinner. So it was a nice turnout and today, Easter Monday is an off day and peaceful too.
They just don't make enough of those days! :)

I think that you would have really enjoyed this Festival! It is a yearly testable and I have never had a bad time. The children always have a great time and honestly at this time I feel like a child because my pleasure is very real! Oh there were so many balloons! Always and forever. The puzzle was complicated even for me and I did not get it but I could not resist to publish it and see if anybody else did. So far, it looks like nobody did oh, but I will wait and be patient. The weather was just perfect for the event! And, the event was fun! Who doesn't love a good parade? Oh, I love that you are putting it higher on your bucket list, but, yes!!! It is so close and just a tad north of $100 to get here, $49 if you are brave enough to take the grey dog!
You would love it here and the good thing about DC is that most things are free. Most events are public, mostof the museums are free. Honest!
What is not to love about that!!! It is a cheap vacation!

Thank you so much! It was an incredibly beautiful day and the entire Festival was marked with great weather throughout. Most times, we get pretty lucky it's just an occasional splash of rain and this time we were exceptionally lucky!

I agree! How could anybody resist a celebration of cherry blossoms? I stopped making big long posts with all the pictures because I was thinking perhaps I was doing too many and people couldn't get through them all, but I noticed it was hard to capture the moments without putting them. So I feel like I'm missing some moments here but, I'm sure that it will all work out.

Blossoms trigger a variety of emotions in people around the world......and all very positive, I'm sure. They herald the long awaited spring season with joy and beauty and set the mood for the weeks ahead as new life emerges and our hope is restored via nature and enables us to have faith to believe for the release of other dream we've stored up in our hearts. 💟
It is always a challenge to know what to add and what to leave out in a post but I do believe a 'picture paints a thousand words' and often replaces words more efficiently. 😊
Isn't that the absolute truth? I like the way you think and I couldn't agree more with the triggering of emotions. Cherry blossoms, no matter where you are in the world seem to trigger something in people, and to tell you the truth I have never heard of negative anything about them. The Japanese believe that it is a renewal of sorts and in a way it is even for us because it is the beginning of Spring. It is always a welcome sight. It is, in fact a challenge to know what to add and what to put out, but I think I will go with your thoughts on pictures paint a thousand words and add back more pictures. LOL I just don't want people to stop reading because I make it too long, but I always enjoy a very thorough post so perhaps they do also. Thank you once again and it goes without saying that I appreciate you very much.
Such fantastic street photography Denise. You really have captured so many aspects that go into making a parade like this so dynamic. A great way to bring people together and lift their spirits.
I love the energy of the dancing girls, but the image that really has my attention is the one of ~ Is it a brass band in the red uniform? ~ With the green Japanese lanterns. Great mix of west and east. And love all the different expressions on the faces. ♥︎♥︎⚖️♥︎♥︎
Thank you so much Ally! I will admit right away but I do love parades. I can't even explain it because most people don't care for them anymore, but I have this thing about parades and I actually prefer to photographed the parade maybe an hour or two before they start. It's interesting because there are practicing and getting dressed and stretching out if they're dancing. I think he gets a different look to the parade rather than people marching down the street. And I have never met anybody that didn't want to give a big cheesy grin to the camera down for which I'm very grateful.
The girls were very energetic and it is not the first parade that I have seen them in. The image that you are speaking of, the brass band in the red uniform with the Green Lantern's? That is actually the beginning of the parade as they were starting to lineup. They probably stood there for about a half hour and I went up and down the line photographing them oh, so that is probably why you got the different Expressions on the faces! I hadn't thought about it like that with the east meets west but that is exactly spot on!

It is always so much fun to go to any of the cherry blossom events! Actually most events downtown Washington, DC... they seem to pull all the stops out at making a good time for everyone. I love living here and enjoying the things that are available at usually no cost.

We are planning a long weekend trip to DC in June to visit my husband's oldest son who lives in Manassas. Wish I could have been there now to see these blossoms!

June is a nice time to come, it is still not too hot and well actually even now is in the high 70's and 80s. I wish you could have seen the cherry blossoms, just keep in mind that the beginning of April is when you would want to plan a trip for that.
In June, they are having the DC Jazz Festival on June 7-16 Also By the People Festival June 15-23 see here Plenty of Arts and Culture see here
I am guessing that you have been here then? There is so much to do here always and always a fun place to be. If your husband's son lives in Manassas, does he go downtown very often? I just looked it up and Manassas has a jazz festival also. And 25th Annual Railway Festival - City of Manassas, VA There are a lot of eating things and drinking things and well, you get the picture.
It was a great day for the parade. It started off cloudy and straightened right out. :) I do love their parades and their museums. And best of all, I love that it is all free. :)

It really was a fun day! The sun was shining, the cherry blossoms were blooming and everything was right with the world. For a moment or three.
I do so love parades, without any particular reason, but, the best part for me is the pre-parade goings on. Dressing, practicing and stretching for the dancers. It is fun to get that action as opposed to just marching down the street.

Denise, you continue to surprise us with every new post. Wonderful. Many new graphic elements that embellish the blog. The same elaborate photos, perfect in supporting the theme. I have a question ... why didn't see Japanese at this festival?
Oh, there were plenty of Japanese at the festival. I couldn't find all the pictures on the external hard drive, so I went with the ones I had access to. I have been transferring all my files over for the last month. I guess I didn't realize I didn't put the dancers in. I may look later today and insert a few.
Thank you for pointing that out for me, Dan. It was 4 am by the time I posted it and I was bleary-eyed and didn't even notice. There were pictures of Japanese at the Tidal Basin, but, they were just visitors.

@bluemoon although you can't see up close, these were the tail end of some Japanese attaching the dragon the vehicle. This was pictured above but I know that is not what you were talking about. I also left a link with pictures above to the Japanese street festival on the article. It was at the first few paragraphs. It is all about the Japanese people in that link.

Why thank you! It was a fun event that lasted two weeks oh, so I guess you can call it more than an event. But all in all, it's always a good time every year. I enjoy that they always kick it off with the Kite Festival and they always ended with a street festival.

I actually thought they had cherry blossoms in the Philippines. I have no idea why I thought that. I like the traditions of the Japanese also. Yes! There is a thing called a new moon. It is when it is in the first lunar phase and it is invisible to the naked eye. The clowns were funny and I saw them all over town after the parade.

Great photos. Festivals are the place to take them...
Thank you so much! The entire festival was two weeks long and there was nonstop activity all through the week. I do love Washington, DC for that part of the equation. There are always and forever interesting characters to take photos of, but, I find I need to get out just a little bit more to these things. Some days, I just don't want to fight the crowds.
How silly, I know. But, spring is here and the weather is absolutely gorgeous, so I will, of course, do more. Thanks for dropping by and I hope you have a most wonderful weekend!
