You guys are thinking of it backwards. People aren't going to make good content for the sake of making good content. They're going to make shit that they think is going to earn them some money.

The problem with Steem is that nobody earns money unless they are blessed by one of the ~40 or so whales that occasionally give upvotes. Some people who have been here long enough and "networked" make money from regular upvotes from those people.

We'll ignore the vote bots for now as virtually all profitability (from anyone other than the bot owners) has been removed. 10% max payout? Color me unimpressed.

On the rest of the internet, content creators make money from 1) selling products, 2) being paid on a CPM model by advertisers, or 3) being paid directly by sponsors/product placements.

Most people who use this platform are too stupid/lazy to create a profitable business. Most people in general are actually too stupid/lazy to do that, but this website in particular seems to attract low quality human beings.

Some whales directly sponsor "shows" like the Hots or Shots thing plus a few more. And while that's great, homeboy is not likely to start making $10k/month any time soon, regardless of the quality of his shows. The money factory can't print that fast.

The only real "solution" to Steemit's problem of mental retardation infestation is to enable on-site ads or in-video ads, like Adsense for example. With a theoretically infinite potential payout, people would take promotion seriously like they do on platforms that enable bigger payouts (like their own websites or YouTube channels).

I would even argue that there is quality content on here, but without the potential for advertisers to make any money from the traffic, users aren't properly incentivized to produce anything consistently UNLESS they're being bankrolled by a whale.

In fact, I'll bet that if I automatically posted all Steemit posts to a new Wordpress website and added an Adsense plugin, I'd be making bank in no time just by posting the links to Reddit and other content aggregation systems.

Steemit links are shadowed on other sites but normal websites generally aren't. I could totally steal the content, push traffic with social media (thus cutting out any need for SEO), and make money from Adsense clicks.

Would that help content creators? No. But solutions like this are what's needed in order to keep this platform alive with more than just, "Hey guys look at this new thing we built for Steem that nobody is ever going to use!"

Exactly what myself and many others have suggested months ago. Hope the Steem developers think of an elegant way to implement this.

I have said always that Steemit is a school for learn bloggers no matter how much hungry for the money could people be right here . All that i didn't learn from Blogger and Wordpress i have done it here...

I wonder when/if communities and SMTs (Smart Media Tokens) finally get rolled out the possibility of individual members being able to build a genuine business on top of the Steem blockchain will become feasible? Under the current model, I think that it is quite clear that replication of success found on other top social media platforms will be a quite talk order. Time, productions costs, and the profitability potential will be prime considerations of someone considering building a business presence via Steemit. Unless and until there is a clear trend of non-whales being to build sustainable businesses, it would seem to reason that few people will have an interest in engaging in such an endeavor.

Funny thing, this same question is on my Todo list to write about at some point.

It's far more complex than you would think. To me, good content is content that offers original thought and value to the community.

But my definition isn't the only one, I know a lot of people who are less concerned about "content" and more about trending, and distribution of wealth.

Some have zero concern about content and it is just a "fluff" thing, and nothing really matters on the blockchain. I haven't quite figured out what really matters in this case but it certainly isn't what anyone has to say.

Then you have some that have zero concern about the origin of content, it's just "sharing" it with the community, in this case, it's perfectly acceptable to get paid hundreds of dollars for this service.

Add in the argument "it's your stake to use how you want" to which I add "as long as it isn't someone else". While everyone has their own opinion about self-voting, delegation voting, bid bot voting, how do you build a sustainable system where you expect large investers to come in and participate when they cannot use their stake as they please? Yet on the other hand, how does Steem survive if everyone comes here buys stake and just votes themselves? At that point, it's just glorified mining with stake being the GPUs. We have a lot of work to go to define what we are as a community, what is acceptable, and how we are going to make this sustainable.

In the end, the simple fact is 85%+ of content on Steemit is embarrassing and doesn't deserve even $0.001. We as a community are still trying to figure out what is good content and what is acceptable. I think we will be figuring this out for a long time coming. While there is a financial incentive to every action, I don't think there will ever be an agreement.

85%+ of content on Steemit is embarrassing and doesn't deserve even $0.001.

It was way better content when I joined in July 2016. Sure, circlejerks and all those things existed and if you had boobs, a simple image would give you $500 for each tit. Even when you had your clothes on.

However, many of the dolphins we have today, have stopped being active... Most of them published good quality back then, which is why many of them had the opportunity to become dolphins in the first place, but more than a handful of dolphins are producing zero content nowadays... Yet, the support they had, have not been passed on to other Steemians.... And that's embarrassing.

It was easier to make money in the "good old days", and even though I understand that it would've been impossible to continue like that, I still miss those days. It felt real. It felt warm. It felt weird, odd and crazy at the same time... Nowadays, the general feeling is bad, difficult and boring.

I've said this before and I'll say it again. I truly believe that we need to minimize the gaps between the different levels on Steemit. I'm not talking about making everyone whales or something stupid like that, I'm talking about helping newcomers (seaweed and red fish) grow into minnows. That would most certainly boost motivation and inspiration and it would bring Steemit more quality in general. It would also solve some of the retention issues we have.

Simply put, more people would stay if they felt it was doable.

Thanks for that "novel" and your words.
It´s exactly how I feel. I spent more than a half year and got up to level 42. That´s not a lot and I still feel like seaweed. But it´s so hard to get upvotes for good content.

I tried some bots and invested some SBD in bots and promoting. The result was more or less nothing.... A lot of upvotes from accounts with low SP and so most of them were worthless.

For me as seaweed its nearly impossible to get bigger without investing real money in a way that feels more like "pay to win" instead of "create good content, get upvotes and win"...

Thanks again, dude!
Cheers.

Steemit has always been a bit "pay to win", as those who "run the show" is the ones with large accounts. However, back in the days, when I started, you could see tons of heart and compassion. Investors didn't act greedy and selfish. In fact, it was the opposite!

They rewarded good content, no matter if it where a whale, a dolphin, minnow or a seaweed who published the article. They helped newcomers to establish themselves. I was fortunate enough to get a handful of articles well-rewarded when I joined and truth is, that I would probably not have been here today, if I didn't get that much of help and support in the early days. Especially as Steemit always have been promoted like an easy way to earn money...

And truth is, it's not easy at all. It's extremely time consuming and difficult for newcomers... And that's probably why most of them give up too.

I'm talking about helping newcomers (seaweed and red fish) grow into minnows.

There are seaweed now?

Not really... But f you ask me, there is.

This is how I see the different classes on Steemit.

Lol! Can I borrow that image? I want to use it for a post, somehow. I just don't know what, yet.

Yeah sure. :)

LOL you are so damn right mate

I think the word "Decentralized" comes in play here. There will never be a single sided sword to say or not say this content is good or bad, sure this content deserves "xyz", however if your not willing to be apart of something that isn't "D" Centralized then people should stop bitchin, and go to Medium.com or even Facebook. Just my .02 cents, yet again, I'm just a minnow in the pond, looking for a way out to the ocean, I may or may not know wtf I am even talking about, LOL!!! @themarkymark @berniesanders

"While there is a financial incentive to every action, I don't think there will ever be an agreement."

Couldn't agree more brother.

You guys are as so far away from seeing/using steems true potential that it is embarrassing

Let me guess...giving everyone some nonsense basic income is where the real potential is, right?

You are too funny. I admire your conviction though.. I'm sincere.

We’ll said Marky, I was going to respond but you pretty much covered my thoughts. . IMHO, there’s too much of an obsession with “quality content” here. Steemit the interface, “blogging platform” is never going to be the catalyst for the price of Steem. The Steem blockchain on the other hand is one of the best in the world. It’s capabilities will eventually be harnessed and the true potential will be unleashed. The Steemit interface will always be shit and it will be a never ending beta test. If we are honest we can probably all agree that functionality of this user interface are garbage. There is not even a decent search tool. Surprised that there isn’t more of a push for a decent UI as opposed to the concern about content. If there is great content here what good is it if I can’t even find it quickly and easily. Also a decentralized network with no “authority” to weed out the trash leaves it up to us to self manage the content. A daunting task to say the least. You and Bernie do a great job but it’s like a game of whack-a-mole.
IMHO, Steemit is like that shitty cult classic movie that everyone enjoys. It’s kind of a shit-show here but for some unknown reason it’s fun to be a part of. IME, the entertainment value I have been provided watching ppl cry/bitch when their accounts are flagged is priceless in and of itself.

That comment included some good content.

lol.. responds to #notagoddamnovel by commenting with a novel.. xD

Well, he did make a good point.

Give him a break, he just wanted to stripe it off his to do list 😁😬

Yes, you would know.

How much does this content cost?
https://steemit.com/@sweetsssj

$0.001?

lol!...I don't know about @sweetsssj; but, at this reading @berniesanders is raking it in at $433.67. Go figure...lol...Gotta' love Steemit!

Peace.

System is needed no doubt.

I think about this often Bernie... I wrote extensively about this the other day. This is the best explanation I've come up with.

All of us, almost without exception, had this idea that the profits we would make on the steem platform would be directly correlated with the amount of contributions we could make. This meant in our minds, that a hard working Steemian could and probably should have good results granted he or she practiced consistency and subjective quality. I say subjective because beauty and it's cousin quality are biased by nature.

Our inability to fully grasp what effective contributions actually mean, at least in the stage that Steem currently resides in, leaves the newcomers confused and disappointed. In truth, the effectiveness of contributions could be best measured for their ability to bring social value to others and not the subjective quality itself. This means, that my pet peeve of poorly written english is somewhat irrelevant to a post, if said post had a positive social effect in the way of interaction, resteems and what have you

So, I could say to make this a little simpler to digest that content, should not be looked as just content, but more like contribution. And they in turn would be measured (if that is even necessary) for the network effect they can generate.

So for example... if you make a post about.

Bergs or Dogs?

And you get 200 comments, people chatting in the comments, laughs, memes, resteems, etc.

That contribution has more social value, than the new shakespeare showing off his skills to an absent audience.

This might anger some people, but that is what the word "social" is meant to symbolize when we are talking about social media.

It's a fair point and a very effective one - however, what I personally, and what I think a number of other people are looking for is

  1. The ability for new users to display their posts of a good subjective quality to a multitude of users, the main problem new users have (other than low quality) is a lack of attention. I've seen many new users put up posts of a good subjective quality and fail for lack of notice. There are ways to get around this (specifically posting high quality comments), however they're usually very slow and quite a bit of work.
  2. For all these terrible, low-quality posts to be removed from the front page. No, I don't mean Bernie-esque posts without much solidity in them (though these should also be limited, there shouldn't be more than 2 or 3 up at a time), I mean the people who are posting unoriginal and/or plagiarized content, as well as those who post in terrible english (or whatever language they use - I don't want to see almost unreadable content), and seriously - please stop with all the drama.

Other than that I don't really have any complaints, I just hope Steem can move forward toward the highest quality platform it can be, and finally manage to live up to all that potential.
And Bernie - I've seen a lot of new users attempt to copy your style and flop. It's annoying for them , it's annoying for us. Not much you can do about it, just wanted to point it out to you - I've already told a few of them that it only works if one has a good following, like yourself. Cheers, and Steem on.

I think it's true.

WOW "social media" somebody's finally said it right !

I agree! Its a social media not a book publishing company.

I like it when you, or anyone else doesn't give a fuck about what he has to upload or whether if people will like it or not.
I mean...who is the judge of what is good and what sucks?
People tend to forget that Steemit is a social media platform above all and not a university nor a school. Of course there are really high quality posts whose creators are awarded under the stem tag or utopian tag.

So if that is the way you like to interact with your followers it is totally fine by me. And you actually...interact. With your way.
Have a nice day Bernie

It's new for me, giving it a shot and it seems to be working out quite well. I hope you have a good day as well!

...

I’ ll agree with you too to an extent. But he never claimed to be a content creator. He is is an investor first and foremost. I agree that there has to be a standard quality but can you blame someone who wants to interact with his own unique way?

PS. I don’t know how many have noticed, but he must be the best distributor of wealth through his posts. Just look at the comment section...

...

I like to go to the beach and be on vacation! I love to sleep.

I love the beach as well, what a coincidence!

Looks like all your content!! I love chiken 😍
IMG_20180504_151110.jpg

I like chicken nuggets, chicken tenders, fried chicken, grilled chicken, roasted chicken, smoked chicken, chicken sandwiches, chicken salad, BBQ chicken, chicken parmesan, chicken cordon bleu...you name it, I like it!

thanks :)

You should do a “here in my garage” video. Followed by a “top 3 secrets to getting rich” webinar.

Oh lordy no...not my style at all. I'd rather hide in my parents basement. ;-)

You know, I have been wondering the answer to that question for a few days now. I phrase it a little differently:

"What content deserves my reward?"

That is also coupled with the question of:

"Which content deserves my flag?"

For me, I answer number one with...
"Content that entertains me."
Now, I take that in a few different ways. I may be entertained by the post itself or the discussion it creates. In your case, you do usually end up with a good discussion...or multiple good discussions. I personally believe that some of your discussions could be better with a little more tolerance (just my opinion), but one thing that's hard to deny is that your discussions are, in fact, very entertaining. So you usually get my upvote.

Now for the other question...
I flag when I feel someone has been overpaid without any effort to entertain me or when they have copied the work of someone else. That's when I flag. I learned a while ago that whales will use their stake as they wish, and I will do the same.

In either case, I will also use my voice. Regardless of stake, I have a voice. I hold Steem. I study it. I contribute to efforts I feel make it a better investment. That means I am vocal and expressive about the issues I feel are important. that gets me into trouble here and there, but I know the stakes and accept them as they are.

Very well said.

So what type of posts get your upvote? How has it changed since a year ago?

when heijin gets a flag, and you do your own TREND analysis on crypto market.. hilarious.

Shit, it's been far too long, hasn't it? One day soon...

Lol fact is you can't please everyone. One man's food is another man's poison.😂

My definition of good content would always differ from the next .

But i geel good content is something your readers just enjoy. Be it a sentence or a 3000 words essay.

Well, it seems my readers are enjoying these little posts. Although I'm sure many are just here for the possible upvote.

I for one enjoy it, because its easy for me to go throw a post that is not so long but can make me laugh or think, most times after the whole day's stress in school and everything its hard to just sit don and enslave myself in reading long contents except its really mind blowing. Well i guess upvotes are a means of saying i like your stuff, and its not everyone's stuff you would possibly like.

Hi Bernie. I was just thinking the same thing. You write two lines and it hits trending without even a picture lol. Reminds me of your soup post ,but that at least had a picture.

Isn’t it subjective? My opinion of good may not match with yours!! But we both may agree that a good content would bring a positive change to readers! And bad content may spread hate! Again this is also subjective 😂

Delegators Thanksgiving Thursday it is! Thank you for delegating some SP to us, we have upvoted your post with 100%

I liked and missed sucking my MAMA'S breast milk - those nutrient made my neurones function well and found steemit.

A good content on the other hand is what captures people's interest at first sight - strange chemistry.

Is my content good then?

Honestly as long as those steem power of yours rewards all steemian on your thread, your content is smoking hot. it's the best right now on the blockchain.
100% fucking dope and original ✌

Steemit in the nutshell. Nobody cares about your shit, unless it's backed by high SP. Then it's a good shit that everyone is interested in.

I like my dog.

smallafter.jpg

Good content is a little harder to put my finger on, but I know when I see it.

Good content is any fucking thing I'll like to share.

If I post anything, it's good content.

I decide, Case Closed

Amen to that. Who are the whales to judge!

They whales aren't the ones judging, they're all too goddamn lazy and that's why this place sucks.

too busy auto upvoting each other more like. This place sucks cos there are too many jumped up non entities telling everyone what they should or shouldnt be posting. If people can buy their way to power, how is this any different to the system we have already that everyone is allegedly so against?
Everyone has principles when it suits them or doesnt cost them

Take from the rich, give to the poor! Fuck the system!

What does bamboozle me is how they aren't even trying to make Steem the "next big thing", isn't it worth a try when the rewards from far easier methods are lucrative enough or is there some other reason like competition for stake, cornering enough market share before trying to actually make it work or just milk it until it dies?

Is there any kind of discussion going on between the whales? If not, why?

I really like the way You try to open Steemians' eyes by writing these articles.

I hope it's having even the smallest effect.

WHY did Bernie Sanders not win the election? Well, it's quite simple really... let me tell you. Both Trump and Clinton both complained that Bernie Sanders was such a mack-daddy that his breath always reeked of pussy. He would tongue-punch vag for breakfast, lunch and dinner so he always had breath that smelled like tuna fish baking in a car with the windows rolled up.

Couple that with the fact that his trousers, (also referred to as 'the missle silo' because of the massive 2-foot Jewish weiner inside of them) were always practically splitting in half like Bruce Banner turning into the Hulk when he would even get slightly aroused.

These and only these reasons.... are why Bernie Sanders did not win the election. Don't let anyone else tell you otherwise.

That was certainly an interesting take on things.

You are doing what you like to do, why you are thinking about others, if someone don't like something, he should stay away from it. Don't give a fuck about those people. post what you like to post.

Fuck, @hairy, you're right...

oh yes, i know that @berniesanders ;)

Who cares about content? Nobody reads anyway...

Yes, you're right no one reads the post just sees reputation and does vote in hopes of gaining votes.

It's so true, unfortunately...

That was exactly what I thought.

You told us that you like fish.

Now tell us what you don't like.

I don't like old fish.

Dude we have so similar personalities :D
like wtf
I like fish
You like fish

You don't like old fish,
and guess what
Me neither

I like color challange , technical analysis , STEEM price prediction with a sprinkling of SMTs and a smidgen of circle jerk !!

That's just me though

Lol, they like the old Bernie Sanders that prey on people who are bad. 🏃

I don't have it in me to go chasing around all of the trash all day at this point. Time is valuable.

I give up...
😂

You already know... I love bananas
What about my BANANA-WIG!?!?

Oh yes, I am well aware of your fetish for bananas.

Thanks a lot for the upvotes.
Have a great day Bernie!
Big plastic-banana hug
Steemitri The Mannequin

A Banana Shirt too! :D I think your love for banana is eternal, eh? ;)

Yes... Next week I will show you my Banana-T-Shirt ;-)

Good content is telling newbies to write good content! I hate that kind of posts... look at me, I write good posts a make a lot of money, be like me and you'll be rich too... give me a break!

Ain't nobody gonna get rich on here from writing posts, those days are long gone...

I personally like reading fiction - looking for skilled photographers - and finding stuff about filmmaking..... But...... I also love fish..... & hearing about your day (walks) - I think these tweet style posts are cool. You seem to be interacting with a ton of ppl. Do your thing man!

I'm trying, it's been hard to keep up with everyone!

Lol I have a hard time responding to a dozen comments over a week. Hats off to you.

There is no such thing as good or bad content. There is auto-voters and how many people you can get to put you on their vote trail. You are one of the few big accounts that aren't on "set it and forget it" curation aren't you?

If only manual curation was a thing again right? haha

The challenge is that manual curation is a complete waste of time. What is the value to the curator? Nothing but time lost and maybe a few cents gained in curation rewards.

It's a losing game.

Also, is it beneficial to pass off the act of curation to investors? They get an investment...and a job?...probably one in which the have no interest at that. It doesn't really make sense when you think about it. I wonder how we could change that?

That's a very good question. Investors and users do not need to be the same and many times probably are not in this case.

50% curation rewards. 50% author rewards.

The people who are self voting are already earning on that model.

We don't want the rich to get richer, so everyone should get poorer?

I like what you publish, because it's fun to think about the answers and get dynamic

I like seeing you post whatever you want. It usually gives me a chuckle. You know we like seeing when you're promoting good stuff for the Steem blockchain. maybe an upvote for @steemfestdreams?

Honestly, I'm not a supporter of steemfest. I think it's a huge waste of time and money and does little to nothing for the Steem community.

well, I respect your opinion sir. I like to see this change to your posting approach you've made recently, such engagement.

"Good content" is very subjective. I can like street fighter and watching pro level play. You can like programming and learning what programs can do. But in the long run people can usually agree what is bad content. Whether or be the person making the content or the content itself. Whether it be a scam someone is running or just their general attitude. One of the worst is watching someone that used to have a content quality you like slowly become something you jaye because they just started caring more about money then the content they provided.

But in the long run people can give good content and they will grow. Others will provide content that people will slowly leave because how bad the quality has gotten. You can see that happening from people's post as the amount they make slowly dwindles down. Most times people wake up and just stop supporting the content they no longer like. Or that one post I saw when some big name person tried to invite a steamer that is a scammer now after jabbing a long history of doing good. It's disappointing if they try and bring over people that will be much more toxic to a community then a benefit.

Well, that's part of the problem with the system, isn't it?

Sadly enough that is true the system belongs to the ones with the power to control it. Which can be at times a bad thing for steem. At times giving those a platform who should not continue to be able to have one. But the ones with the power to upvote allow to have a form of voice.

Didn't you see the corn in Trending? Everyone loves corn....
.
.
.
.
Oh.. sorry... PORN. Everyone loves porn.

Amen. We need more porn on Steem(it). Maybe then we'd get some real usage outta this chain.

That was a very informative post actually. Even some people commented, "we have learned a new thing". That is what dictionaries are for (posted on hede.io). But that was very small in length because was just a meaning for a local food name. The author used bots to let people know about it but didn't think of prejudice of people.

I like that you changed my mind about 'the quality posts' on steemit

It's all about subjectivity.

I rather prefer your posts where people communicate in the comments than so called long qualitative posts upvoted by bidbots with 5 comments

Well, I've always felt the trending page was complete trash and people really need to have fun here rather than just look for a few Steem. I don't think we'll ever get there, mainly because there is crypto involved.

well, it's different to have fun with 500k Steem

I like photography yo.... sharing and viewing....sometimes I get those steemy tokens from doing so...

I like your photography as well.

I don´t get it.... almost 30 bucks for a post like that...

I would like to post that kinda stuff and get half of the upvotes.
That´s what I like.

So why do I try to create good content anyway....?

You're right. You DON'T get it.

Thanks for your upvote. I appreciate that.

But Steemit seems more and more for me like a"pay to win"....

Have a nice evening.
An keep doing what ever you are doing.

You don't like fish. You don't like when I tell you I'm going for a walk. What DO you like?

Upvote from Bernie and strong flag for Jerry Banfiled)))

I like everythings, but I prefer @berniesanders ..!, frecuently I go to the beach because i live near the beach.!

Screenshot_84.png

That looks like a beautiful beach!

Let me leave the question to those who don't like those things. I think everyone needs to take a stroll and get some fresh air because the price of steem is enough heat and get a fish while coming back.

My teeth needs fish because is micro-Soft

Can you elaborate on your teeth needing fish?

Fish sails smooth on my teeth while crushing or chewing them with both my incisor and canine. While meat gives me a hard time like I am preparing for a boxing match.

I like when I come home and see my 3 children and my loving wife.

That's a good man right there!

You wanna see a bad man?
check out user sirvotesalot

Look man, I just want what I want, when I want it. You need to give it to me.

Is it really that hard?

That's what she said?

Hello friend, I like to travel on my motorcycle and know places and towns, its people always tell me their stories far away in time, I like that a lot, regards

Awesome, enjoy your time on the road!

I like pizza and pot

Daamn, i got same ammount of $ from votes, than my last post that took me 2 days to write :D

so so bad I don't even know what I like @berniesanders, just keep doing your random stuff, once I see the one I like you will surely get notified by me

I find this topic very subjective and "good" should be determined by the individual and not have a set standard.

Personally I like when you make these posts because of the interaction. I can almost guarantee I'll get a reply from someone and most days when I'm making my normal posts, that's not a guarantee. I love having interaction on Steemit and wish people engaged more frequently.

Good content is literally editing the STEEM whitepaper. Eliminating grammatical and punctuation errors that makes the white paper look like some mickey mouse bullshit that turns off whales. Then I go post about it and make $0.17.
