The Old Dog Asks: Have You Been Ripped Off Yet Today?

in #ripoff7 years ago (edited)

Thirsty? How About an Ounce (about 30 ml) of Water For $.20?

Today I was driving home to Ticino from Luzern and I pulled over to a highway stop to buy a bottle of water. The cheapest bottle that I found was about $3.20 for half a liter (about 16 ounces)!  That works out to about $.20 for a shot glass worth!

Sure, Charge us More, But Why Do You Have to Kill Us?

Ok fine, I expected to pay more than I would at a grocery store which would have been anywhere from between $.30-.80 cents! How about double? Maybe triple? Naw, that's peanuts, how about five times as much? That sounds about right!

Sip it like a fine liquor because you sure paid for it! Above is the actual bottle that I paid $3.20 for. It was the cheapest one that they had!

Why Are Prices so High at Airports And Highway Stops?

  • Basically you're a hostage in those places. There is nowhere else to buy, so take it or leave it!
  • The business owners who rent the stores are also hostages. Their rents are higher take it or leave it!
  • Supply and demand. There are lots of hungry and bored people walking around in airports! Solution? Pay through the nose!
  • Delivering food supplies to airports is tricky business. Deliveries need to be made on off peak hours and are subject to tight security checks! EXPENSIVE!

Here Are Some of My Personal Experiences!

  • Recently I missed my flight from Frankfurt to Milan after traveling all night from Toronto. The airline gave all of the passengers a food voucher of 10 Euros to buy breakfast but guess what? That wasn't even enough to buy a coffee and a croissant!
  • I've been to airports in many different countries and the high prices seem to be universal apart from Italy. At the airport in Milan I can get a cappuccino and a croissant for the same price as I can outside the airport! Wow!

All of This Had me Thinking About This 40 Second Clip From Seinfeld!

Do they even have any idea what the prices are on the outside?

What About You?

  • Have you been subject to rip off pricing?
  • What have you experienced at airports and highway stops
  • Do you think that they should try and be just a little more reasonable?

I hope that you enjoyed this article about being ripped off today!

Until next time,

I am subject to rip-off pricing every time I do a bitcoin transaction lately. When you compare the cost of sending $10 worth of value via bitcoin as compared to sending an equal $10 worth of value via, for instance, bitshares - well, FEEL THE BURN!

I had not to change my hoard of bitshares since I keep it safe and WAIT :)

Yes, we are all waiting patiently!

i wanted to write about the priority miner's fee on btc but your bro did already
it's still cheaper than 12 euro per mini bottle of mineral water in summer in Venice
but yes airport food and souvenirs are over priced indeed!
so.. did you just imagine it was a tequila? or a gin tonic?hihi

Ouch! I feel your pain! Yes, Bitshares is a whole different animal.

another reason that TSA / customs agents take your water bottles away going through the checkpoints. all's left is for them to sell it back to you coming out the other side, or would that make the scam too obvious?! lol

That's funny and sad!

well someone might drown, it's a hazard

Allright.... that made me laugh...

feel you bro...transferring from coinbase to GDAX and setting a limit is the best idea

So then why don't you use Bitshares?

I do! It's all the other people and business who don't (stuck in their old ways) that are the problem.

Hopefully we can help to fix that ;)

Gotta be the change to make the change right ;) Get your point though, Bitcoin is too hyped. My bet is still with Bitshares, and hopefully it will grow once EOS comes to town :)!

well use others ltc, eth, btc is like a gold bar at this point, maybe even a box of gold bars probably, a satoshi is like a nugget :D

Yeahh central exchanges and bitcoin fees are really sh.. nowadays.. It's gets even worse, when the majority starts with crypto they all fall in the same trap as we did in the beginning.. at least we can choose now...

Better wear a hydration pack then used by military spec ops. You wear it as back pack and drink water on the go using a flexible tube/straw. You save on money and never go thirsty.

Hahah good one by a master of humor!

yay fallout :D looks amazing tho, nice back water pack

It truly has become a disgusting world...can't wait for things to change....(sigh)

I feel your pain @lellabird60!

I do my best to avoid the nickel and dime industry of death. How they have not started to charge per use of the bathroom is beyond my understanding.

I do feel for you. As if they have not come up with enough silly fees and other nonsense they have to take it out on your needs of food and water as well. At some point, you would think price gouging laws would come into effect over high surcharge of basics necessities. That fact you are only allowed to bring in some much liquid even in the form of water should merit that.

Next thing you know they will charge you extra for random body search you didn’t ask for. Having to scan your bag twice or chagrining an inconvenience fee if you trip the metal decor because you forgot something.

Good thing I don’t work for the airlines. No one’s wallet would escape with a cent remaining! They are greedy and I choose to not engage with them unless I am otherwise forced to due to time restraints.

You make a lot of great observations. At the place that i stopped at they do charge $1.00 do go to the bathroom but then you get a voucher for $1.00 to use to buy food or drink! There is nothing that costs only $1.00!

wow so the minimum fee for any transaction there is 1$ :D yeah they are bitcoin alright :D

How they have not started to charge per use of the bathroom is beyond my understanding.

some airlines have already tried that too... lol

Link: Paying to Pee: Have the Airlines Gone Too Far?

Greed appears to have no limits with those people. I wonder if people just pee on a wall and say "sorry I already spent all my money on the ticket" lol.

I totally hear you!

Now that the cattle-style enclosures, such as airports are in place, it is easy to ask for what ever you want from your minions.

Because I am aware of their stratagems, I always carry an empty bottle with me and load it up inside airports that still give access to water from a dispenser in the waiting rooms. This way, I have water all the way across the travelling journey. With food, I carry super foods with me, or a mix of super foods usually in the form of a bar or packet to which I only have to add up... Water! Something to ponder some more as the scarcity of freshwater and human freedoms & liberties are being chopped.

Good article, as always, thanks for sharing this outrageous madness with us. Exposing it may help others including us raise voices on this matter and/or become more aware of this water take over that is happening all over the world.

Namaste :)

yeah it's either travel with a bagload of cash and get mugged for being stupid or survive in a hostile environment :D

You make such good comments and you have great suggestions!

Español? Es bunghole! Habla, blah habla, habla habla, habla bunghole...

Ripped of everyday by different criminals - is it a tax thing by my state or just ridiculous business people knowing one has no alternative in certain situations - however when I am in Switzerland i always feel ripped off lol

the standards people set are amazing, we have to stop this, do that, basically stop global warming, so we make things more expensive, the good ones, like don't use cheap cars, make them cost thousands and have them break easily, we have to feed the hungry so regulate the food industry and make it a law to throw food out, make everything expensive :D we have problems to solve :D we need more money :D

Yes good old Switzerland is expensive!

That's true. But things of basic necessity like water and food shouldn't be handed over to market forces. Prices will skyrocket for things with inelastic demand.

We have a concept of MRP (Maximum Retail Price) in our country. Charging higher than that is illegal and any consumer can sue them in a Consumer Protection Court with just a receipt. But sadly, still businesses do charge higher illegally. So in upmarket places, the concept of "what the market can bear" is applied for pricing instead of what is reasonable or fair.

I just learned something about law and commerce in India! "What The Market Can Bear" is exactly what I faced. I was THIRSTY. Good points from you as always!

OMG!
Water should be free....

Yes what you say is true though also people who travel generally have plenty of disposable income so its an easy hostage situation.

I am very disappointed in humanity for allowing such corporate extortion to take place.

Yes it is true that corporations treat people like slaves or cattle and just try and get as much out of them as possible.

Yet the free market does exist, supply and demand does exist. If people (mostly ones with money) were to really make a stand and boycott dishonorable business practices and fund honorable ones it WOULD change.

We are the power~*~

I like your way of thinking Mighty Quinn!

Great to hear!

Hope to share more of it with you in the days to come!

SteemON!

yeah sure, we just like watching tv and agreeing with the status quo, we like easy, we like fun, we like being treated like kids, we like being crybabies, we are lazy :|

sooo yeah let's have institutions for everything so someone else is responsible, there is someone we can blame and someone we can ask and look up to :) we rule :) :D

I have been ripped off a lot at fairs and carnivals!! The food and water is super expensive because the owners know people will buy it when the get hungry because if you leave then you have to pay again to comeback in to the fair or carnival. There are also people selling balloons animals, stuffed bears, water guns and other things because they know kids can't stop themselves from buying it. Some kids will even start crying because their parents won't get them it so the parents buy the kid the thing they wanted so they don't get embarrassed.

Were you a kid like the one in your exmple! :) I guess we all were to a certain extent but most likely I need to ask @mathworksheets! :)

Lol that was just an example that I see happening!!

personally, I can't imagine shopping there, I know that even coffee is overpriced, since I've worked in a store, well percentage wise, I suppose there is a high demand for it so it evens out, still the material you use costs about 10/20 cents, the coffee costs a dollar, why? nobody knows, it's how you make a buck.

It's mostly regulations and requirements, for some reason you need a lot of papers to sell anything, so why not charge extra.

Highway stops are a mess, it's like people are waiting for your car to die off so they can make some thousands hauling that to the shop and fixing it, so since you can probably spend a couple of thousands when something goes wrong, why not charge 10 times as much for a sandwich, I think nobody shops there and they have to make up for that in prices, maybe 5% of people can stop and have a coffee at a gas station, personally I feel bad, sure the cups are porcelain but still it's like a 5-star-ratingSCL.png star restaurant

well you have some views and it's nice, humm I guess come prepared, have a water tank and a boiler some filters and a few porcelain cups in the car :)

Thanks for your experiences and your good advice!

I had the same situation here in Lviv this summer. We were waitting for our plane and i ordered 1 latte coffee and 1 fresh juice. When i saw the bill i was shoked... it was 60 grivnas ( 2.5$) for coffee and 80 grivnas (3,2$) for my juice. Woow...here...in Lviv 🤔🙄
Airports are very expensive places to buy something.

The second situation i had in Bulgaria when i wanted to change money from ukrainian grivnas to bulgarian levs. They saw that i'm just a tourist and asked me for an additional fee for 4$. So i just came to another bank.

We need to be very attentive especially in another countries.

Thanks for relating your experiences. You did well to go to another bank!

Evviva il cappuccino a Malpensa!
P.S. I loooove Seinfeld... I saw all episodes!

Wow it was a great show that's for sure! I never saw it available much here in Europe but I guess that I'm wrong!

Haha, very funny. At least the bottle looks cool. I'll tell you where I get ripped off, any cafeteria where they require you to weigh your salad in order to determine the price.

Yes those salad scales are terrifying! They are the norm in many diners her in Switzerland!

It's ridiculous what stuff costs-- regardless of whether it has to do with airports, rest stops or other places. That's a LOT of money for a bottle of water... but as the saying goes "they have you by the short hairs."

Many years back-- when I was living in Austin, Texas-- they built a new airport. And conducted a brave new experiment-- NO chains, only local providers AND nobody could charge more than the price in their local store or eatery. Don't know if they still do it... but it was a pretty revolutionary idea.

All this makes me want to dust off and finish my partially written piece on the human "greed gene!"

The only Airport that I have ever been in that has "real world" prices is Milan Malpensa. It's interesting to read about Austin but I will be even more interested to read your finished article on the human "greed gene"!

And at the airport they won't allow you to bring water into the "secure" area. Right...

Hahhaha that's a good one. Form the movie Airplane correct?

Roger ;-)

At the John Deere factory, it was refreshing to find out that if an employee comes up with an idea to save the company money, that employee would get a percentage of the cost savings as well as the customer would get a lower cost item. At the Caterpillar factory (usually a more heavy duty machine than John Deere)...when asked how do they come up with their sky-high pricing, the answer was simple. It's what the consumer will pay, no other reason. In conclusion, if you are paying too much for a product, I think it's either you have no options at the time OR a fool and his money are soon parted.

Hmmm "I think it's either you have no options at the time OR a fool and his money are soon parted." In my case I hope that I know which one it is!!" Hahaha

That's one reason why I hate working at the airport, it's the worst job I've ever done there
resteem your post :) @kus-knee

Thanks a lot!

you r welcome my friend

Oh I hate that. It happens here on some roads that are called toll roads. In order to use the road, you are charged. If you stop for food on any of the exits the choices are all the same and the prices are sky high. That is what a lack of competition does. I avoid toll roads if I can.

Toll roads are a way of life in many European countries. I do my best to avoid them too!

@kus-knee,
You are absolutely correct my dear friend! I have this personal experience too. Not only those places in my country when I am going to a film hall this same incident will happen! Yeah this is truly a way of scam people! We have no other option to buy, so they over charge us! This is a perfect scam according to my language!
Really appreciate you effort and thank you very much for sharing such very useful experiences with us!

Cheers~

Thanks so much for your great comment!

When staying at a large hotel on the strip in Las Vegas I've seen bottled water priced at $8 per bottle and there's not water fountains anywhere. Ive Also seen 12 oz beer at the pools in Vegas hotels go for $15. The big hotels also charge a $25-35 "resort fee" per night for wifi access or whatever they claim it's for on top of the room price.

It didn't used to be that way. 15 years ago a decent hotel room could be found for $40-60 a night and alcohol was reasonably priced bc they made their money off of the casino and gamblers. Now it's more like a movie theater or an amusement park--captive audience and you have to take a cab or walk a ways off the strip to get something without a 1,000% markup or more.

I still like Vegas and I go to visit my Dad about once a year but next time I'll probably stay somewhere off of the main drag and just walk or take a cab when I want to go gamble or see a show. There's hotels close to the strip with small kitchens and the rooms are reasonably priced. you won't even find a mini fridge in your room at the big hotels anymore and if you do it's stocked with over priced alcohol.

So that's my experience with price gouging / rip offs.

Now the casinos are trying to charge for parking.

You're right they are...and they're executing it very poorly too. They tried to automate the whole system instead of having an attendant at the garage exit but the few I've had to use don't work very well. You have to pay at a kiosk inside the casino and not in the actual garage in some places which means if you don't realize that when you're leaving you could have to backtrack by a quarter mile, pay, and then return to the car and finally leave.

My dad says people are mad mad mad about it too. Especially Vegas residents who go downtown to see a show once in awhile. I can't believe I forgot about that part!

It has gotten to the point where it is cheaper to take Uber or Lyft than to deal with parking - and I can get picked up/dropped off closer to where I want to go.

WHAT? ?// well it's another castle there for sure, I suppose everyone is winning the machines and getting jackpots

i wonder what happened to the world, having water in public places, having fruit trees by the side of the road, having dollar corner stores, even on the highways, sure you have to do a lot of transportation, buuut still, what's up with all the prices going haywire

Wow what an experience. I Was there about 25 years ago and I remember food and drinks being very cheap. It was a big bonus for a guy like me because Imdont gamble!

Yes I went in 2005 and stayed at the Sahara (now SLS) and it was only $40 a night on the week nights. I was only making 30k per year back then but I could still afford to stay there for nearly a week, eat, drink, gamble a little and see some shows. To do all the same things I did 12 years ago there would cost probably 3x as much now at a similar hotel.

I also went in summer 2001 and it was reasonably priced. I love Vegas but I wonder if at some point people will get sick of being nickel and dimed to death and either stop going or stop going to the big resorts on the strip and go to hotel / casinos on the outskirts of the city. I just don't know how so many ppl have all that money to blow on food, drinks and entertainment.

Probably the worst experience I've had along these lines was over paying for bananas at Ft. Lauderdale airport. I can't recall the exact price but it may have been $4 for a banana. At the time it seemed better than hunger (I'd just landed from an international trip).

If there's a logical reason prices are so high in any given situation then it doesn't bother me however in some cases it seems items like the bananas are overpriced just because they can be. I'm a big fan of getting value and quality for the money so when possible I try to prepare ahead of time either with price research or by bringing my own food when going to airports and other high priced places.

An example of this is my recent travels to ostensibly super expensive Oslo. I did pay $20 for a bacon and eggs type breakfast there however most of my meals were much more affordable simply by eating cold meats and cheese from the grocery and then selectively choosing to eat high-quality meals at certain times and places where maximum value (enjoyment could be had). Pingvinen was one of those high-value places to eat (as an aside for travelers to Oslo who might read this).

You make some great points and give some sage advice!

Oh yes...I have been ripped off repeatedly this past week. I am at the hospital cafeteria and it is the same. You are held hostage.

I hope everything is OK. Are you visiting someone there?

No, things are not good but with time and prayer it may get better. My son is here. I have many people sending their healing energies. These things take time and I thank you for asking :)

Ok I think that I read about what happened. I also pray for you to have comfort and healing. Hang in there!

Thank you so much!! I'll take your comfort and healing and put them to good use. I believe wholeheartedly in the power of positive thinking <3 Thanks again, and get yourself one of those hydration packs ;)

It's everywhere at the airports or at remote locations, prices being marked up by 10-20 times is normal. I avoid to buy there but we can't help with children or older. I paid these prices at airports many times as I was accompanied by my parents or children.

Hello Purple Prince! When you're thirsty you have to drink and they know it!

Right big brother, but myself can stay about 10 hours without water.

Horrifyingly alcoholic drinks often work out cheaper! Which plainly isn't right.

You're correct!

Thx for this post again.. it feels indeed as almost steeling.. then can just ask ridiculous prices because there is no market competition at these locations... even worse if someone tries they won't get a license... even worser is that the rents they pay are that high that they must charge that.. so it's a chain of people causing this.. unfortunately this chain is massive and almost impossible to be broken...

Oh well at least I quenched my thirst!

And was it the best water you ever drink😉

I guess you'll have your water canteen with you in the next trips ;)

Yes you are right. This Old Dog still needs to learn!

I live in a New Jersey beach town that for years was languishing. Out of control poverty and crime had ruled the day since the race riots of the 1970's. That is not the case anymore. The town has become quite popular and the city leaders had made no provisions for the increased parking demand that has become a daily battle.

Instead they numbered all the spots and charge $2/hr to park. They just numbered my street and offered residents a permit for $90/yr. Being that it's September I asked what the prorated cost was and the answer: $90.

This city would suck the last nickel out of your pocket with a straw. Highway robbery to change the rules in midstream and then use the long arm of the law (parking police) to enforce their will on the public.

Not a single thank you for supporting the town when it was on it's knees.

"This city would suck the last nickel out of your pocket with a straw"

That's a great but sad line!

$3.20 for half a liter ???? It's crazy!!! Here in Italy the most expensive half a liter of water that I've ever bought was at about $1,5 - $2, but usually it cost just about 0,5 euro. In Florence there is a very elegant place called "Paszkowski", the most expensive places in the city, I know that for one coffe they ask 4 euro and for an half of liter of water about the same 4 euro (if you drink it sitting at the table), but it's Paszkowski!!!! :D

Yes luxury and location are expensive!

Rip off? Visit a restaurant in Váci street, Budapest! Horrible prices and awful food. Visit a night club and drink a bottle of beer for 50 USD! Or go to the Budapest airport by taxi for 80-100 USD! Go to the lake Balaton for one day, it's more expensive then a seaside!

Those are quite shocking examples!

No- today no ripp-off directly happened to me. or perhaps the 19% taxtation on my burger is to mention ;-)
Upvoted and restemed :-)

Well that 19% supports the government salaries! Great example!

Funny you had your experience with a bottle of water. I travel quite a bit domestically and use the price of a 1L bottle of water as a proxy for how expensive a given area is. A common extreme would be the bottle of water I regularly bought in the Denver airport at $2.59 will set you back $6.07 in the Burbank, CA airport. And of course, the same bottle of water at Walmart is just under a dollar.

Some of the variance, I expect is directly a result of the cost of doing business in a given jurisdiction. But, someone, somewhere determines the sales price and the avarice behind it seems obvious. Or just stupid.

Reading recently about the incident in the Houston area where a Best Buy charged ~$42 for a case of water, the official explanation was that they had no clear pricing for a case and the cashier simply multiplied the single unit price by 24. Was it greed or just plain stupidity (and lack of common sense)? Regretfully, if we consider the quality our schools are churning out these days, the truth may indeed be the latter, even though greed makes for an eye-catching headline and feeds the injustice trolls.

[sigh]

What a great and well thought out post. Your water meter for understanding how expensive and area is is fascinating. Perhaps it could be the subject of a thesis!

I have thought of that on occasion. For now it will have to stay on my "to-do" list which is longer than I like.

This is very common here in India. Even the hospitals' canteens charge here more than MRP on water bottles, chips, biscuits etc. At Railway Stations you have no option to buy so we feel helpless and have to pay what they demand. Even strict laws have been made for this but of no use.

I feel for you!

Can we raise some awareness regarding it here on steemit if the big corporates and officials have account here and read us, this may be a great idea to deal with these situations.

thats one reason I hated working at the airport, it was my worst job ever!!

Pearson?

yes thats right!!

I know the Big Smoke, T.O. well!

I remember the time the first time I heard from my friend that they have water in bottles in stores - I though what w stupid idea who will buy water - and here we are

The times they are a changing!

Creepy!

best movie, I'd highly recommend it, well the most hilarious advertising one for sure.

good one :)

I don't think there is such a thing as rip-off pricing. As you mentioned, supply and demand are at work (economists will tell you demand doesn't affect price, it's quantity demanded). And supplying an airport may involve costs to the seller that are unseen. Bastiat was big on pointing out the unseen costs (and benefits) inherent in all economic transactions. Once I started learning about them, I stopped worrying about those instances when prices seemed higher than normal.

No doubt the cost in supplying are higher as I pointed out in the article. Perhaps even slightly higher at a highway stop but likely not enough higher to warrant a price 5 times higher on a bottle of water.

I can understand from your article that you've studied the subject! Thanks for chiming in!

Well, the thing that you don't realize is that the food and drinks items available at airport shops are actually fortified with gold particles. They just don't tell you about it.....

Oh OK thanks for letting me know that. Now I understand why I'm paying more!

I once paid £7 for a really bad sandwich at a motorway service station. I was so reluctant to purchase it but I was so damn hungry I had too.

Wow and it was really bad! Yikes!

Great job, friend @kus-knee! I like your creativity and style! Thank you for sharing!
I spent 14 days on a trip to the south of Ukraine. Now I'm back home and tell you in detail about real Ukraine. And you will understand what price policy here, where I live!
I think that you may have not seen everyone. Enjoy with me!

Looks like you had a great time!

my dear friend, it is already bad to be treated where with today the most profit is generated. It is mostly in the elderly, or sick. So with care or in the Medezin. But also where there are basic needs, such as at rest stops and airports, is strongly collected by the small man.

You are right. I had to pay 1 Swiss Franc to take a pee!

only criminals

Great post @kus-knee and a great point. The cost of bottled water is ridiculous at some places and it would be far better for everyone to filter their own water, but that's not always practical. It's always been the case with airports and petrol stations, they're always going to take it a bit too far with pricing, but they probably have rental charges to pay that constantly go up every year. I remember speaking to one cashier at a petrol station and he said that they don't even make any money from the Petrol, that's why they jack the food and drink prices up so much. He was the cashier, so how well informed he was about the business, i don't know. Upvoted! ;-D

Great points made @flatrider. Yes we should all have a good filter and "produce" our own water!

So expansive!!no sense!
They must be more reasonable, water is Life!
Usually i always keep big bottle with me when i'm travelers, beacuse i know about this prices..what a shame!

Ciao bello, grazie per il tuo commento! Come scrivi bene in Inglese!

Ciao!mitico! grazie...troppo gentile! ;)

Ha ha.. They are trying to exploit us..
I have a similar experience old dog.. In last year December Me and my wife was traveling to New Delhi, India.. We have to buy some waffle in New Delhi Airport for $18 each.. $18 was too much and nothing we have to do... Nicely written post, my dear friend old dog.. 😊 Upvoted for you..

Wow $18.00 that's like robbery!

Congratulations @kus-knee!

Thanks a lot. The reputation comes a bit at a time, slowly slowly. You can do it too!

@kus-knee Better bring along a handful of drinking liquid with you all the time.. It really sucks! chillux!

Actually I did that and the checkpoint security guy took and threw out my unopened canned pop. I was told they have to maintain monopoly keep travelers safe because an unopened can of pop is so dangerous.

yeah better be safe than sorry..

I know, I should always have water with me!

Oh yeah, I have definitely been ripped off at an airport! $22 for 4 pork buns when I was flying out of Chicago to Italy. I should have just waited the 8 hours until I got in to Italy.

Haha yes but when your stomach is grumbling.....

This is true. Who am I kidding? There was no waiting til Italy...that in flight meal was not going to cut it.

good post very good shearing i like this post

Thats why i always have a bottle of water with me from at home. no plastic waste, no costs, and our tap water has better quality than the one you can buy!

You are a very smart and practical Steemian!
