After seeing the success that I have had on the Steemit platform my oldest son is eager and ready to start his Steemit journey
Welcome back to another vlog by you boy @mrviquez I hope you are all having a great day. As for me any day on Steemit is another blessed day!!!!! Ever since I started this Steemit journey I have encountered many great people who have invited me to become part of their projects. Each time it is a humbling experience to be included in these projects.
With that being said I know that if my oldest son joined Steemit now before it is mainstream he can possibly be set for life. I am conflicted on the subject because of his age. He is still only a child at the end of the day. I don't want him to have to deal with any evil trolls lurking on his page. I know I can't protect him forever but I feel as long as I am alive it is my duty.
Being a part of this platform could get him used to the idea of having some money. So that when he graduates high school he doesn't commit the mistake of leaving college for an average full-time job. That was my case when I left school. The idea of having more money was more appealing to me than being in school. So I dropped out of college to work full time and honestly if I had been used to having money I would have never quit school. I feel this can be the one thing that will keep him on the right path to success.
Please let me know what you guys think!!!! Is 13 too young??? Or is Steemit so great that is can be for people of any age???

My first thought that comes to mind is at the bottom of your post..16 years old...theprophet lol....I was putting lawn mowing letters in peoples mail boxes at that age...steem, crypto, and an understanding in stocks is investing in the future!
I think that whatever you decide will be a good decision. My son is also interested in steemit. But he's only 10, so he's gotta wait. As far as a 13 year old, I think as long as you make him understand that there are trolls out there, and to not take things to heart, he'll be fine. It could be a great bonding experience for you guys. But whatever you decide, I'm sure you would have thought it through because you seem like a responsible father.
I think it is a good idea to let him.
Let him use it. Let him explore it.
Let him make his first attempts at being responsible and making a living.
Just let him :D
And this goes without saying... help him grow and to stay safe. Show him how to be safe and to stay out of trouble. How to invest and how to enjoy life.
13 is no kid anymore, he is going to grow up fast. With or without you. And when he asks you to help and become part of this process its truly beautiful-
Right I totally agree, but as a parent I know it is so hard. We can't protect our kids from everything so we have to give them the tools for success. Better to give them the opportunity while they are young and you can supervise than have them go crazy at 18 because they never had any responsibility. My best advice would be that you need to monitor and supervise their content and what they are getting involved in.
Thanks for the tip! I've been trying to convince my kids and their friends to join - maybe this will help to know there is a community of younger people to support them! :)
Not that my opinion matters at all but I think it would be very educational, especially if he steps outside of his comfort zone reads some of the blogs. The world is front and center on this platform. Also, I truly believe the money is a bonus here, the community and the insight is far more beneficial than anything money has to offer. If he surfs the internet anyway, theres no better place to be enlightened by a community of individuals with a common goal. Good luck to you and your son my brother! Have a great day!
At 13 I'd started a business flogging costco sweets to kids at school at a discount on the tuck shop which was run by the chemistry teacher. I got a weeks detention and 200 mars bars lifted when discovered. It was my first foray into understanding that the powers that be are not interested in free enterprise, they are simply out to make sure that nobody makes a profit unless they get to extort them. Bastards. Anyway, I'm sure at 13 he is quite mature enough to deal with Steemit. Hope he makes a fortune on it, and I'll follow him if he comes here.
There are boobs on Steemit. Is he ready for that? What about the conspiracy stuff. Illuminati. Is he going to be able to take stuff with a grain of salt? You don't want him convinced that the lizard people of Planet X are coming for him.
I see your point. This is what scares me but he can see all that and worse on youtube....Did you know that you can watch full out porn on YouTube... I didn't believe it at first but my boy showed me and I was shocked
thanks so much @stellabelle It's a pleasure to have you grace my page with a comment... Have heard of your legendary status on here!!!! STEEM ON!!!!! Yes i will put that setting on for him...I am almost 100% convinced that I will let him join.
As parents we have to teach our kids how to think not what to think. If he comes at you with "Dad, Nibiru is going to collide with Earth" take it seriously and see if you can get him to think it through. Just like you would as an adult. As for the porn, kids who are curious are going to get and find porn. Better to talk with them about the dangers of porn and its psychological and emotional repercussions. My son is 4 and I know that the day is fast approaching where I will have to deal with the same question that you are working with now. Good luck and keep us posted!
I disagree. There a boobs and illuminati all over the internet lol! At least on Steemit it's hidden by the nude filter.
I think this is the best opportunity for anyone at any age. Age does not play a factor. In my opinion, the question should rather be, how hard-working is he? That's what he will need. The grit. The determination to stay consistent at such a young age.
As long as you educate him on what goes on in the comment section of post he should be fine. Plus, steemit seems like a place where trolls and negative comments don't really exist since everyone is trying to get upvotes to earn more steem. It's like a safe space for the internet. Everyone is going to be positive and love your post no matter what.
Hi @mrviquez, I think your son is better of on Steemit than for example Facebook. This is a better community and there's a lot of violence and cyberbullying on Facebook the last time. I didn't see that on Steemit yet. If he wants to join a social network I think Steemit is the best option. Steemit is also good for his personal development (writing and reading). What do you think?
13 is the age of entry for a lot of social media and I think this place is probably safer than the comments on YouTube for example which contain some hateful and mature stuff.
I appreciate you considering this though, maybe brough up more because of the bad blood you have seen around the place, especially Craig etc but I still think in the grand scheme of things, this is a more productive and creative space to let a 13 year old than Facebook or Twitter for example.
I feel like there is a lot less harm in the Steemit part of the internet than there is anywhere else.. yes there are the nsfw posts that aren't appropriate at all for a 13 year old but on the other hand there is a lot to be learned as well. There is a lot more truth in the things people write in here since it is a new and undiscovered platform by the masses and the media. And kids are ambitious and get real excited about things so If he does do well over time and doesn't get discouraged it will be a beneficial experience indeed. It is definitely better than going on facebook is what I am saying and all them kiddos have it. :)
It is excelent question, when the person is not to young for such a realistic concept of living?
Thanks for bringing this out, I was thinking the same about the such an empowering paralel model to secure the future of my three kids...
no please let him enjoy. it's not a good time. and there not even something like youtube child app i wish if steemit introduce something like that because nsfw post.. its my little advice.. thanks for bearing
stay blessed
I agree with letting your son join Steemit.
It is definitely an opportunity and I wish I took some of the opportunities I had when I was 13.
13 years old, with social media these days if he doesn't join Steemit he's bound to run into internet trolls one day anyway.
Steemit is not as bad as some other communities.
I definitely think it's a better idea to spread a portion of his investments, such as to Steemit, than letting all of his savings stay in a bank account.
If he wants to join Steemit as a content creator, let him experiment on what kind of content he wants to tailor and maybe help him think of ideas. We have successful users from artists to photographers to chefs and there are SO many more niches yet to be filled.
Being successful here follows the same rules as how to be a YouTuber for example.
It's a lot of work if you want to be successful.
Your son should know this also takes effort, but he could potentially be set for life like you said.
Edit: But I would be careful here, you wouldn't want your son to assume he can make a living off Steemit, if he is serious one day about being a content creator in Steemit, you should work out ahead of time an agreement, I would say something along the lines of, if he's not making at least minimum wage on Steemit by the time he graduates high school, he better not say he doesn't want to go to college and wants to work on Steemit full time. That is a dangerous line to tread and he should definitely continue education, like you said you regret not continuing education, he can do steemit part-time (which may in-turn become full-time in the future after he has stable income from his main career) while pursuing whatever he likes in college (for stability).
You find your niche for your "channel", you employ tactics to get views and gather followers.
But like reddit or 9gag, it is easy to get lost in Steemit viewing blogs all day, careful not to get too lost in it.
Best of luck :) I'll be following you and your son should he make an account one day!
Definitely let him join! It's the perfect environment to give him a head start. He could be light-years ahead of his peers by the time he leaves school.
Wish I was 13 years old again finding this platform then!
My daughter wanted to start making $$ online when she was 11. This was many years ago. For me I wouldn't say I was a kid. People use these platforms to gather information about people and stalk them. Just like FB. Being on line since 95 I have learned a few things about this BS.
Let him, let him, let him, let him! haha that's my lil chant for him! I think you should let him so he will start generating money at a young age and he will be ahead of other youngins! :D
I understand the sentiment. My step children can only have supervised access to the Internet until they are 16. That being said, I believe you can find a middle ground for your son to start his Steemit journey but not be exposed to some more adult content or anything like that. Here is what my husband and I plan to approach it with the kids once they are 13 and can join social media and such, if they want to join Steemit. We would likely allow them to create an account, but would have them be on the site using a computer that is in the living room, so that we can see the content they are looking at and they would be allowed to use the site with us nearby. It is not ultimate supervision, since Steemit is a much safer place than Facebook. It will allow them to use the site freely and as creatively as they would like, but at the same time give reassurance to my husband and me. It's something that could potentially work for you too.
@mrviquez 13 is too young for this platform, besides it is a violation of some kind of US law. There was a young kid who was on here a month ago and his account was terminated due to his age. I'm trying to find the post, but I'm not having much luck. If I'm able to locate it, I'll post it.
You might think I was making this stuff up, but I know I don't know allot, actually, what I know you can probably fit in a thimble. As promised here in the info. @mrviquez
That depends how mature he is. If he can act mature enough to be a great addition to this community we would love to have him, but if he won't find a good place in the community it might be best to just wait a bit.
I think that you could help him create an account and help him select people to follow. With your guidance he could safely explore steemit, and create an account presence sooner than later. Go for it!
Heyyy, I think it's an absolutely great idea to let him join Steemit! :)
I've been trying to convince my daughter ( 16 ) and her friends to sign up, it's way better than that snapchat and FB nonsense lol! It's not just about social media, but it's about instilling a sense of independence and freedom to earn your own income. Kids these days will learn more from platforms like Steemit than they prob would in school - about the monetary system, about centralized authority, etc.
One of my children is on here they are younger than that, we have rules, they can't use the account unless I'm sitting right next to them watching their every move, We are the overseer of the account - it's for them when they are older.
If they write a post it needs to be read over first, they need to think before they write a comment and if they wouldn't say that to someones face don't post it.
If they see a post and unsure ask, not allowed to click on certain tags.
If they join later they might not want your supervision as they wont need it, at that age they will let you guide them and listen to you more than when they hit 15 or 16 when they apparently know it all.
We went over that what ever you say stays on the block chain forever - that is a great help, in what they write about and what they say - as they want to put their best foot forward.
Do whats right for your family.
I had this chat with @road2wisdom - I reckon from age 15-16 is cool. Your call Mr V man :)
I'm with you, start them young and when he's out of highschool, he can focus on enjoying life instead being a slave to the system. Mad respect!
absolutely!
My first thought that comes to mind is at the bottom of your post..16 years old...theprophet lol....I was putting lawn mowing letters in peoples mail boxes at that age...steem, crypto, and an understanding in stocks is investing in the future!
Let him have fun! Steemit is actually a pretty nice environment.
I think that whatever you decide will be a good decision. My son is also interested in steemit. But he's only 10, so he's gotta wait. You are absolutely right
There are many young people and school childrens community here on Steemit.. contact @jonathanyoung @ #steemitschool for more information.

Use the filter in settings....go to settings, then switch it to "hide all NSFW" posts. At least you can try.
thanks so much @stellabelle It's a pleasure to have you grace my page with a comment... Have heard of your legendary status on here!!!! STEEM ON!!!!! Yes i will put that setting on for him...I am almost 100% convinced that I will let him join.
I've seen random boobs in old BMovies on You Tube, but never Porn. That's crazy.
As parents we have to teach our kids how to think not what to think. If he comes at you with "Dad, Nibiru is going to collide with Earth" take it seriously and see if you can get him to think it through. Just like you would as an adult. there's a setting in each account, and you can hide all NSFW posts. Parents need to set it
As long as you educate him on what goes on in the comment section of post he should be fine. 13 is fine!!!! LET HIM JOIN!
Just perhaps change the NSFW filter to "hide all NSFW posts."
I have grappled with that question. It's more the NSFW stuff that I wouldn't want my kid to click on.
I don't know, that's a close call... I guess I'd say another year or two , peace
Help your kid to not end up like this!

My son is on steem to and he is 12 so i dont see a problem :)
Well I don't think that's a good idea to expose him to all the adult stuff in here but he must be already exposed to all this so...
13 is the age of entry for a lot of social media and I think this place is probably safer than the comments on YouTube for example which contain some hateful and mature stuff.

There are no content warnings . Each parent of course makes their decisions but no would be my answer if my 2 were 13 again .
I agree with letting your son join Steemit.

There's far worse elsewhere on the internet. It would be great for him to get an appreciation for making money so early on in his life.
Definitely let him join! It's the perfect environment to give him a head start. He could be light-years ahead of his peers by the time he leaves school.
Wish I was 13 years old again finding this platform then!
Oh let him join but don't forget to block nsfw! :P

Let him join. Powering up his earnings would also be a good idea.
Let him have some fun mate!
Let him on the service, but keep an I on him. Knowing right from wrong early will pay out in the long run.

nigga's can't even blog.... lol
Much more positivity and a overall better environment here than in any other social media platforms I've seen. I think you let him give it a try!
never too young to start hustling
