Wombanook Milkyway - SteemitPhotoChallenge Entry

Wombanook Milkyway

It's been over a year and a half since we packed up our little cabin in Australia and began the slow process of relocating to Canada. After living in this remote 4WD only access ridge top cabin full time for over seven years, posting this up makes me more than a little homesick. It was shot on one of the last few nights I stayed at the cabin. It was shot using a Canon EOS 6D, Samyang 14mm f/2.8 IF ED UMC at ISO, 3200 and 30s exposure time. This is my second entry into the Long Exposure Steemit Photo Challenge run by @jamtaylor. Wollombi Valley, NSW, Australia

Good work Rob, you've also got 2 planets in there Mars and Saturn. If you look just to right of centre, there is a triangle 3 bright orange stars, the righthandmost star is Saturn, and then below and to the left is Mars.

Wow thats really cool. Thanks for letting me know.

Just had a look at your blog; some amazing info up there. How is Brisbane treating you? I grew up there but have not lived there since 2002.

I really like Brisbane, have no complaints apart although don't know how I would go without aircon from December to February!

This is an incredible photo! I feel like I'm in a Star Wars film. Incredible clarity - really fine work.

Wow, this is probably the most detail ive seen in the milkyway out of countless nightime longexposures. Makes me miss Australia.

Thanks. Such a kind complement. That said the lack of light pollution has more to do with it than my editing skills I would imagine.

Holy Night!
This is amazing. I have a few long exposures posted, but they do not compare to this.. haha
Well done.

Thanks ; Appreciate the kind support !

Ah man, I can see why you'd miss this place!!!

Yes. We have 40 acres there on top of the ridge-line. One day we might go back.

Ah, I'm glad you still own it. :)

Gorgeous! Amazing hot.

Wow, 7 years living in such a remote place...I might go all Wolf Creek.

Nice shot too :)

Mental note {never go camping with Kieran for more than two weeks at a time without bringing a chainsaw and face shield for self defense}

All camping and no Latte's makes Kieran a dull boy

That’s why we camp with a stove top espresso .

Can you make fern shapes in the milk foam with a stove top espresso maker? I think not...
You know some people paid a lot of money to study arts and humanities at university so they could work in a cafe well into their 30's perfecting coffee foam pictures. These people need our support.

"Can you make fern shapes in the milk foam with a stove top espresso maker? I think not..." That sounds like a challenge. I think if I had a magnetic laboratory stirrer that was attached with some teflon tape to a sintered stainless steel high surface area spring in a ceramic pan on the camp stove I could froth the milk. Then I could use my Swiss army knife to ladle it out in fern shapes. Perhaps even a love heart ... hmm...

Actually throw that battery operated imitation milk froth machine away; and get this high pressure camping stove milk steamer !

Wow! Really nice shot!

Thanks . Very kind of you.

Dang, that's a sweet place. How far away were you from any city?

It’s about 45 min to the closest shops / supermarket ; and about an hour and a half from Sydney. It is in a wine region so it’s only 5 minutes form a wine bar with live music . It’s all about priorities :)

Marvellous shot! I can only imagine how amazing it must have been to see that with your own eyes!

Thanks . There are beautiful sky’s in Australia

Oh wow. That is so nice!

Thanks. How long will you be in Panama ?

I live here. I have permanent residency.

So until such a time that I don't want to live here anymore.

Cool. Which part do you live in ?

Panama City.

Did you live a fair way out or just in a difficult to access spot? And did it actually look like that from there? That's pretty magical! And pretty colourful. I've been out to the middle of nowhere and seen the milky way with no light polllution and it was pretty much still just milky coloured in blue/white/grey and all those stars. But at the time I was at a somewhat more northern latitude so perhaps that has something to do with it?

It's a pretty awesome photo at any rate :)

The cabin is about 2 hours from the centre of Sydney (on a good traffic day) but it’s surrounded by wilderness so there is little light pollution. The camera sensor is better than your eye (imagine if you could store up the light for 30 seconds and get one image). So you never see the Milky Way like that in colour with your own eyes. In low light you eyes use your rods which are B&W (your cones see in colour) . What you do see is the dark bits as pitch black against the lighter bright bits which are milky white. So you can easily see the pattern of the galactic core. The aboriginals thought it looked like an emu.

It is harder to see in the North partially due to increased light pollution from higher populations and particulate emissions , but primarily as the galactic season to see it (when it’s opposite to the sun) peaks in June and July which is winter in the South and Summer in the north. So the days are long in the north at that time of year and twilight can extend for hours at most inhabited northern latitudes which reduce its intensity.

Hope that helps.

Ahh that explains why there's so many interesting colours in especially the longer exposure stuff! Thanks :)

Wow this is amazing, we want to give milky way photography a go this year and would be so happy if we got something like this!

Its a fun thing to shoot ! Hope you have some success.

Thank you, will be sure to post them if we do!

The aura is amazing

Hi it is actually the milky way not an aurora.

I have seen this magical photo may be on your personal website... Glad you have posted here so I can up up up up vote ! thank you !

Such a great picture. I have tried astronomy photography, but I can't seem to get it right. I think a lot of it is in post processing too, and you have done an amazing job bringing the colors of the milky way out.

Thanks for the kind feedback. There is a lot in the post processing but the key is to have a very dark sky (no light pollution and no moon ) .

I am hoping to get out and try it this summer when I can drive a few hours down to Arches National Park and get some shots there. I need to study up on the editing techniques and the camera settings.

I would love to get to Arches National Park. Its on the list but the world is a big place and its a long list lol!

Awesome! 👏

Brilliant photo! Love the milky way :-)

Thanks mate !

Brilliant photography. One of the best photos I have ever seen. I would love to frame it and display it in my studio :) The small cabin isolated in nature against the backdrop of our vast universe is a dramatic effect. Well done!!

Wow. I think that is the nicest complement that one can get. Too kind of you. I do sell prints on my website but they are USA based printing. Are you in Australia?

Yes, I'm located in Sydney.

gorgeous! fantastic! I love astrophotos!

Thanks. @choogirl has been a great help in getting me started on Steemit !

Before I read that this was in Australia I knew it by looking at the stars. Beautiful shot mate. I can't wait to go back down there, my uncle lives in the tablelands up near the Daintree Rainforest, can't wait to return. Cheers :)

Thanks. The Daintree is a special place.

Having a remote cabin in the mountains where I can go for a week or two is a dream of mine! However, I cannot imagine myself living there for such a long period :) Beautiful image!

Once you get up there for a few weeks you wont want to leave.
