THE SHIP WALKING ON LAND
Source
Then the youngest of the three sons spoke.
“Mother, tomorrow I want to go looking for the ship, the Ship walking on land."
The next day, at the break of dawn, the cadet left, stick in hand, a small loaf of black bread in his bag.
At ten o'clock in the morning, he sat down to eat lunch on the edge of a fountain. A poor man happened to pass by.
“Young man, I am hungry. For the love of God and the Blessed Virgin Mary, give me a piece of your little loaf of black bread."
"Poor man, go your way. I don't have much to eat for me."
"Young man, where are you going?"
The boy shrugged his shoulders in contempt.
“I am my nose. My ass is chasing it."
"Young man, I speak to you honestly. Do as I do."
"Well, poor man, I'm going to get some distaffs."
"Distaffs you will find."
The young man finished his little loaf of black bread and left. At sunset, he stopped, starving, on the threshold of a farm.
“A piece of bread, sharecropper, please, for the love of God and the Blessed Virgin Mary. Pater noster…
"Get away, lazy person."
And she threw her distaff at him.
The young man picked it up.
“It’s still something to keep."
And he left again.
For a hundred days, the unfortunate man wandered the world, drinking from fountains, and eating herbs and wild fruits. When he stopped, starving, on the threshold of some farm, to ask for alms, the sharecropper immediately shouted to him:
“Get away, lazy person."
And she threw her distaff at his legs.
The young man picked it up.
"It’s still something to keep."
By the hundredth day, the boy had collected a hundred distaffs. But he hadn't found what he was looking for.
Finally, the unfortunate man returned to his mother.
"Well! My son, have you found the ship, the Ship walking on land?"
"Mother, I only found these hundred distaffs. Now I'm done traveling."
Then the last of the three sons spoke.
“Mother, tomorrow I want to go looking for the ship, the Ship walking on earth."
The next day, at dawn, the last of the three sons left, staff in hand, a small loaf of black bread in his bag.
At ten o'clock in the morning, he sat down to eat lunch on the edge of a fountain. A poor man happened to pass by.
“Young man, I am hungry. For the love of God and the Blessed Virgin Mary, give me a piece of your little loaf of black bread."
"With pleasure, poor man. Here, eat it whole."
"Thank you, my friend. You, eat all of this."
And the poor man took from his bag a large loaf of bread, white as snow, tender as dew.
“Young man, where are you going?”
"Poor man, I am going in search of the Ship walking on land."
"Young man, lie down there and sleep. When I wake you up, you will be content."
The boy obeyed.

Hello, my name is Vincent Celier.
I am writing translations of folk tales that I found in public domain French books, so that people who do not understand French may enjoy them too.
As expected, the second son did not do better than the first.
Also as expected, the younger son was good and honest toward the poor man. And he will probably be rewarded because of his good behavior.
Yesterday, in the morning, we went to one of the World's Largest Indoor Trampoline Fun Parks.
In the picture below, you can see myself and Adam, the eldest grandson of Kati. It is easy to realize that Adam is more comfortable than me on the trampoline.
We had a great time for an hour there.
In the afternoon, we went to visit an IKEA store, where we bought some small things.
That was another good day.
I am still jetlagged, but it is getting better; I almost slept normally (for me) last night. When we will fly to British Columbia next Saturday, I will be perfectly OK.
-- Vincent Celier
It seems that fate was not very kind to the first two sons.
However, it is comforting to know that the youngest son was kind and honest with the poor guy.
I sincerely hope that his good behavior will be rewarded in some way.
Sometimes good people deserve a little luck in life.
Indoor trampoline parks are great for a good time.
I'm glad you enjoyed yourself with Adam, I'm sure it was a fun experience.
And visiting stores like IKEA always means finding interesting things.
I hope you recover from jet lag soon.
Happy flying to British Columbia on Saturday!

The kindness of the youngest son brought him the favour of the old man, who obviously possess supernatural powers. I saw it coming that the second son will behave exactly as the first had done and not get the Ship walking on land. The old man was not hungry he was just testing to see the type of people the sons were and the last son did not fail the test. Evidently the last son will be rewarded for his kind nautue when the powers of the old man helps him present the Ship walking on land to the King and marry the princess. The last son also has a chance of assuming the throne when the King finally dies. There is one moral that is hard to miss in all your tales, @vcelier. And that is that being kind to others pays.
Thanks for your efforts at translating these intriguing tales.
It's good you had a great time today out with loved ones, especially the playful grandchildren of Kati, with Adan Adam jumping enthusiastically on the trampoline. It's always refreshing to spend time engaging in worthwhile things with the ones we love.
Good bless and Goodbye. May God be with you and your family.
The story is getting interesting, the first son who belonged to this woman failed to return and the servant he met on the way also did wrong to him and now the son who is gone to her, he was wronged by the people on the way. What is a good brother-in-law and this shows that he has been brought up in a good family and if both are brothers then it depends on the person himself how he wants to live his life.
The next episode of the story will be very interesting and the king is watching the behavior of the servant towards the people.
We ourselves also went to such a beautiful place with children in the same way, which I have also posted, children enjoy a lot in such places and are very happy.
My instincts were right after all, the younger son followed the steps of his elder brother and came home with nothing. The last son was more polite and kind to the poor man and it is clear that he is the one to get the prize. It cost nothing to be kind but the two brothers just choose to be rude and now they missed something good. Well, I hope they will learn from the last son. Another lesson grabbed here too, it is not good to be rude be it to strangers or to people we already know because we never know who will help us tomorrow. Kindness will always win in the end.
Adam seems to be enjoying the trampoline more than you, just look how high he is jumping.
They journey you took the last time was a very stressful one, and it is possible for you to still jetlagged but it will go away soon.
I already suspected that the second son would portray the same character of being greedy and rude to the poor man, and I was right.
The younger son of the widow was indeed generous and brave. He was so kind and sincere to the poor man when he asked him for a piece of his little loaf of black bread. This made the poor man like him and decided to help him in getting The Ship Walking On Land.
Well, what I don't know is how he was going to help the younger son of the widow to get The Ship Walking On Land, but we will get to know in the next story.
You actually had a great time with Adam, Kati's grandson. I can even see that he was so happy.
The two elderly sons failed in this mission because they had no character, they were rude and also liars.
But from the look of things, the youngest son is kind and thoughtful, now he has found favour with the poor man whom I perceive to be a fairy. I feel that the poor beggar is going to help the youngest son of the widow to get that ship but let's see what happens next.
Adam is having fun so much, yes he's carefree at that age but for you, you are afraid to loose your balance. I know you had fun all the same.
I'm sure you had beautiful things to buy at IKEA.
Yes You are saying right. Adam was more comfortable than you. He is a child and found these things interesting for him.
If we talk about the story, second son was also doing the same like first one.
They should be honest but they told a lie and found the same thing they have told to that guy.
Third one is seems to be honest and he told truth and what will happened to next.
He is going to lay down and I think when He woke up, he will find himself on the ship walking on the land.
Why king wanted to search this type of ship. What was the benefit behind this.
This tales depict the value and reward that is associated with giving. No matter of small you might have, you should learn how to give to those who needed our assistance.
A little gesture can make us a fortune in the end. If the youngest of the mother's son has giving the poor man the loaf of bread he has demanded he could have seen the ship walking on land he as set out to look for. But unlucky for him he lost his chance due to his act of selfishness.
The last son however proven to be different from the youngest son by given the loaf of bread to the poor man.
It is cool to see how you day went yesterday. I'm sure you certainly enjoy yourself with your family.
Yesterday, it was the eldest son that messed up and returned home with nothing but a hundred goads. Today, the other son made the same mistake and returned with a hundred distaffs. The youngest son had wisdom, is kind-hearted, a combination that will take him very far and even get him what he desires. I think the poor man is not just a beggar but an angel.
The trampoline game is fun for Adam and for you too, though you were being very careful.
The youngest of the three brothers has also failed in getting the ship walking on land.
He had some similar experiences with the eldest brother.
Unlike the eldest brother though, he found distaffs as against goads.
He has more potential for achieving high by the way, the target...the ship walking on land.
Well, any of the brothers who succeeds in getting the ship walking on land enjoys the privilege that the king promised.
It will still be a win for their poor widowed mother either way.
I like that you are always outgoing
Life is to be enjoyed
My regards, as always
I like this one. It reminds me of some other folktale where the youngest brother gets all the power and wealth due to his kindness. It looks like some morality stories have the same conclusions all around the world. The first two sons, driven by pride and arrogance, fail in their quests. The third son, characterized by humility and kindness, takes a different approach. His willingness to help the poor man and accept the gift of a superior loaf of bread reflects a philosophical lesson in humility and the acknowledgment that assistance can come from unexpected sources.
However, I got to check where Gascony is and how it looks. Must admit it is lovely there.
I have crossed several times Slovenia, when traveling back and forth between France and Hungary. It has always seemed a beautiful country to me.
Oh yes, I can only agree. Every time I travel around, coming back is always bliss. However, everywhere nature has its free hands it is beautiful innit?
I already knew the last of the three sons will be the one to find the ship walking on land. Because he felt pity for the poor man and he also thought he could survive but the old man won’t be able to survive hunger for long.
Like the poor man said to the brothers and everything came to pass, it will be the same way for the last son.
I’m glad he was able to tell the poor man what he was really looking for
Let’s see the next part of this tale.
This is very interesting. I wish those two people who went earlier knew that they will always get whatever they tell the poor man that they were looking for so it will be good to speak the truth in that kind of situation. I’m just glad that this young guy spoke the truth and apart from that, we was the only one who gave bread to the poor man. His two other brothers chased the poor man like a dog.
He must be a very obedient boy for him to have listen to the poor man when he was told to sleep but that’s a good one. I wish to see what will happen next. I wonder if the ship will suddenly appear by his side or the poor man will bring it for him.
I’m very sure I will find out that. Thank you for sharing this wonderful story
In this part 2 of the story we can see that through perseverance, sacrifice, and unexpected kindness, the three sons embark on a quest for the elusive Ship walking on land, each facing unique trials, with the youngest demonstrating compassion and receiving unexpected generosity along his journey. A lesson to be learned and applied in the real life as well, doing a good deed might not cost you anything.

Very beautiful illustration of the ship. This ship fits an entire city. A bit like my childhood dreams.

I have knew from onset that it will really be a tough competition among the three sons because each one of them will also want to have what the king will give to anyone who can give to the person that discovered the ship. It will really be a firetic battle between them and it's just a matter of time. Come to think of it, it is just a matter of time. But my mind is strongly telling me that it might be the third son that will finally discovered the ship the king long want but well let's see how the story will play out. Quite an interesting one ahead definitely.
