Thought Bubble Thursdays #0 - The Origin Story!

in #writing7 years ago

It's Thursday, and you all know what that means… tomorrow's Friday! But, aside from that, I usually write a series narrating things I used to do. Emphasis on "usually" because I haven't been able to post for four weeks straight. So, is that something that I used to do as well? Time will tell, but for now I'm going to alternate it with a new weekly series called…

tbt.png

Not many of you know, but I'm a huge comic book nerd. Back then, I could narrate whole comic book events at the drop of a dime. I want to be a comic book writer more than I want to be a fiction writer, as to why, I'll get to that in a bit. With the resurgence of comic book movies in recent years, I've been having the time of my life. I'm sure the people I watch with are getting tired of all my trivia and comparisons to the source material, but hey, they asked for it!

What a time to be a comic book nerd! Seeing all of the characters and stories that you've read in 2D come to life is just so wonderful. That's why I decided to dedicate my Thursdays to pester a whole new audience with commentary about comic books and all its glorious depictions.

The Origins of a Nerd

origin.jpg

When I was a kid, I didn't have a lot of friends. I mean, I still don't, not because I was always a loner but because of a lot of different factors that I've posted about in the past, which I don't want to get into in this post. So, I turned to creating worlds on my own. But, when I'm not creating, I'm consuming inspiration from different media. Be it nature or other fictional worlds, I took inspiration wherever I could get them. The thing is, I'm a very slow reader. Sometimes I get stuck in a line for several seconds before I move on to the next one. It's quite ironic since I write a lot of long chapters haha! But anyway, coupled with my love for drawing when I was a kid, I gravitated towards comic books and graphic novels.

It was accessible, fun and easy to digest, especially for a kid who was only starting to learn English. The first comic book that I read was the first encounter of Spider-Man and the original X-Men (who were known as X-Factor at the time), so I mostly stayed with them at the beginning. As I mentioned in my Drawing post, I eventually expanded to Knuckles the Echidna (of which I have the complete collection of), then moved on to other titles like The Flash and others.

No matter the twists and turns, the one thing you can trust comic books to be is to be there. Sure, books are cancelled or cycled off, but all of their stories remain alive in the minds of the readers and creators. Friends have come and gone, but all of the wonderful characters that I've come to know have remained.

To Infinity and On to the Next Page

Since I'm a frustrated comic book writer, the best thing that I can do to satisfy that hunger is to just write about them. As much as possible, I'll stick to mainstream, but write about topics that would not be found elsewhere. Unlike other series that I've posted, there is no grand plan with this. Think of this as something like @hanshotfirst's Geeky Dad Reviews, only this isn't a review and I'm not a dad yet. I'll try to offer up a unique perspective that adds value to the viewing experience. After reading my posts, I want readers to rewatch the movies and have a different experience.

Will I be serious or will I be humorous? Who knows? Do I know? I, uh… I don't know, y'know? Like a comic book, I'm going to try to write this not knowing the end. I've listed basic ideas, and I'll try to flesh them out as I go. But, I'll try my best not to get ahead of myself. Heck, I won't even pressure myself to write something every week. Posts that have very little quality, no matter the amount it earns, steals from the STEEM blockchain.

Will this be the only post in the series? Hopefully not.

Will this series improve your lives and make you better lovers? Absolutely!

Will you join me in this journey by commenting on this post and checking back next week?

OH man! I still love your posts. I've gone away for a couple of months but something is telling me that I will be investing a lot more time on steemit for now on. I'm glad I followed you, keep it going! there are people that enjoy your writings .

Hey, man! Welcome back! You came back just as the cryptos were crashing. I thought about you when SBD peaked a few weeks ago. Your winnings in my contest were worth more than 12x it was! That would've been a good boost if you converted it to STEEM at the time. Thank you for the compliment! I appreciate it :D Looking forward to seeing more from you from now on!

Good Morning. Excuse my English but I use the translator. Interesting your post. I wish you success in your projects. I have several photos of this beautiful land of Venezuela, I invite you to see them on my blog and vote for those who guide you. I hope you follow me then I follow you. Thank you.

First of all, thank you for the well wishes. I don't normally go to users' profiles if they ask me to, but since you asked nicely I'm heading there after this reply. Quick tip: if you leave a relevant and thoughtful comment on a user's post, you won't need to solicit a follow or an upvote because most users would check you out just because of the comment you left. The key there is that the comment should be relevant to the post and should be thoughtful enough to warrant a look at your profile.

Also, I'm not a native English speaker as well, so you don't need to apologize :)

Hahaha!! Well we are the same, we are not experts in English. Thanks for the suggestion, your logic is good and it is reasonable, but even if you do not believe it, there are people who, no matter how relevant the comment, pass by. Luckily they are few, it will be careless or inexperience, badly said on my part because more inexperienced than me, there is not, hahaha! Very understanding. I value your contributions. See you in steemit. A hug.

Oh wow! I appreciate it :) See you around!

I know that feeling when you can't get back to doing things that you usually do because you are sick or you are just not feeling it! I feel it sometimes and it's very sick feeling! Sometimes more confidence and positive results really helps. I hope you will agree on that.

Brother @jedau if you became a comic book writer I will love to be the first reader of your comic book, I can literally feel the energy and excitement of you while reading your stuffs haha.
That's true it's just amazing to see your favorite comic characters on the screen come to life, but yeah a book can detail a character more than a movie does most of the times, I hope you will agree with me on that.

Yeah do something new and that will be the most interesting people will be wanting to read as we always want something new and different. Hmm maybe write about your own fantasy world as I think you have a very interesting fantasy world. Maybe you can add mine as well if you ask. 😂

I totally agree with that! Momentum is such an underrated commodity. Sure, that's not as needed in non-creative pursuits, but for things that do require creativity, it could really make or break the quality.

Brother @jedau if you became a comic book writer I will love to be the first reader of your comic book

I'll hold you to it! :) I hope it comes sooner rather than later. I appreciate you taking notice of the energy! I really do try to inject a lot of enthusiasm in everything that I do so it's definitely nice to get noticed for it :D

I do agree that movies have a lot of limitations. But, they're a means to an end. They get people, who would've never bought a comic book, to the door. It's easily consumed, and it's more widely embraced after all.

I've actually been writing a whole multiverse of stories, so I'm in no shortage of that haha! I'd rather you tell your fantasy world through your own stories. I will be happy to support it as well! Thanks so much for this rousing comment, I appreciate you taking the time to share it! :D

You explained it perfectly 👌

Yes it's very noticeable and you nail it, 😀 it would surprise me if no one mentioned it before!

Yes the movie world make it interesting for non readers and it's easily consumable, but lots of movie doesn't get it perfectly right with details and it's sad for all the comic readers because they see lots of things missing haha, it's hard to keep up with the movie then!

I appreciate you taking the time to reply. 😊

A few people have mentioned it before, but I would've wanted if everyone who got to read what I write felt it seep through every word. Those are some of the things that you can expect from this series, talking about the differences with the source material haha!

I always reply, so don't mention it. Thank you for taking the time to leave such thoughtful comments. These kinds of comments are my favorite ones to reply to for sure!

A few people have mentioned it before, but I would've wanted if everyone who got to read what I write felt it seep through every word.

Everyone is definitely not the same, just like I feel it different people have different sense of humors, different people find your article different.

People like you will find your writing style very attractive just like me I could feel it from the beginning.

You know I don't get to see a lot of people like you, I wish more people wrote like you with these kind of enthusiasm, but yeah I'll say you are definitely unique in your way and I love it.

Most people like you have a unique style so yeah I do expect that from the series hehe.

I'm so glad for those words of you 😊 thanks.
We are like people so you can expect these types interactions are my favorite too. 😊

Cheers Mate 🍻

You just keep 'em coming, don't ya? :') I really appreciate the words, man! It's a very trying time for me just getting my work out there. So, everything you said is highly appreciated!

You know I don't get to see a lot of people like you, I wish more people wrote like you with these kind of enthusiasm

I feel the same way about you and your wonderful comments. Definitely a confidence booster! More power, brother!

🙊 Same 😂

I feel the same way about you and your wonderful comments. Definitely a confidence booster! More power, brother!

Thanks bro glad to have you ^_^

I wanted to ask you if you have like steemit chat or discord and if you would like to let me connect with you?

I am looking forward to this series. I used to love comic books although truth be told add I got older I did read more book books and comic books less.

I think you have hit upon a seam that you will be able to mine again and again here!

I think it will be hilarious simply because you are quite hilarious! Hurrah!

Age does that to a person. Perhaps it's because one's own imagination surpasses that which is depicted by mere drawings. I guess that's why it's attractive for someone younger and less experience. Once you are wizened and world-weary, the images spring from the written word effortlessly.

I was just looking for a worthy complement to Uncle Boom's midweek adventures. I will endeavor to make it hilarious and non-spoilery for you, ol' chap. I am only as hilarious as you make me out to be. My humor is only sharpened by your wit. This vow of support is much too much to bear, but is immensely appreciated! Words betray me.

Did someone say betrayal!!

To arms!!!

Speaking of arms, check this out, dude: https://steemit.com/@steempunknet

I have just signed up for it, and it looks like a thing that gamifies the whole Steemit experience. That might interest you when you're at the pooter machine!

Hehe, I did see that. I contemplated sighing up with b00m but I raised I simply don't have the time to be throwing another stick in the fire!!

I am still considering it though :0)

You're only going to be entering your MEMO key so what's to lost? What are you going to lose, dude? Are you afraid you'll get pulled in so deep that you'll lose sight of what matters? That you'll lose time for your family that your daughter will resent you for it and become a benevolent tyrant in a few years?

Hur hur hur.

You seek to challenge me!! ;0)

Hehe, I am kinda scared I get sooked in. Are you doing it?

Why are you frustrated? If I can do this animation thing you can do the comic thing :D

I'm reasonably sure you can do it in less time than me too seeing as you don't yet have the child thing to worry about XD

goatsig

I already can't handle everything on my plate, that's why I'm amazed at people who can balance everything with the added mix of children! Or maybe I will get better at time management when I do attain an offspring haha! The comics are still in play, it's just put at a lower level in the priority queue unfortunately.

Who are these people who can balance everything with the added mix of children? On the one hand I want to learn from them, on the other I don't want to know as I will feel thoroughly inept then! XD

You have a bit going on so yeh definitely get the important stuff out of the way first :D

goatsig

One would imagine that having more than one child entitles you a place among their ranks haha! What if every parent feels they're ill-equipped, but other parents look at them and admire how well organized they are? I bet you're being way too hard on yourself, mate. Classic Fyn haha!

This is going to be fun! I had a time period where I was big time into comics- though I have to admit Archie was the one I read most (and the cw has completely butchered those comics with their new teen drama show about it BOO!)

Make us better lovers? Now that's intriguing, hee hee.

HAHA! I refuse to acknowledge that show even exists. Everything just has to be gritty now. Why can't they just make something that honors the legacy of the franchise. Talking about gritty, have a look at this:

I hope I can make this a regular series. With all the comic book movies and series out, I feel like I have enough material though.

Make us better lovers? Now that's intriguing, hee hee.

Tell Howie "you're welcome wink wink" for me haha!

I know, right? My daughter's the one who told me about it, my mom had kept all my archie comics so when she was about eight she started getting into them--which they're actually awesome for increasing vocabulary, not something you realize until your child is reading them-- and then when the show came out she was excited at first "Mom, mom Riverdale is coming to the CW!" We watched the first episode together and were totally speechless. Jughead's character--I can't even.

Oh. My. God. That is RIDICULOUS. Guns and blowing stuff up on Dora, really??
You know, I've been trying out all different series recently and finding myself kind of depressed, everything is so freaking dark! Outlander, that's one of the only exceptions. The book series was fantastic and the starz series is doing it incredibly well. And while there is certainly tough stuff in it, it always makes me feel hopeful rather than down.

Howie says "Shouldn't it be the other way around? After all we do have two decades of experience to impart to the upcoming newly weds, double wink back atcha" . lol!

I forgot to mention, my Sonic and Knuckles comics were published by Archie Comics, so I got the chance to become familiar with the folks of Riverdale as well. When I was younger though my preference leaned more toward anthropomorphic creatures than straight up human teenagers though haha!

Really? Why do I see a lot of people raving about Jughead? Haha! I see him as Cody though haha!

Seriously? Haha! Outlander didn't make the cut for me. Well, I did eliminate it after watching just the first episode though. Might have to revisit it after seeing you like it. I fell asleep a couple of times watching the pilot, but it might've just been bad timing.

Touche, Howie. Touche!

wow, this sounds amazing! Now I won't be able to wait for each Thursday to get here!!
As you know I'm an artist and I have had a graphic novel rolling around in my head for quite some time, it's set in the wild west. On a different but related note, I've been active in the community for "steempunk net" which is a sort of MMO for steemit. You can check it out here. It just opened up for anyone to join the beta and you were the first person I was going to invite to see if you were interested in participating. But, the other thing I was thinking, is one of the writers does a series for a character who lives in the steempunk world . check it here and I was already thinking about maybe doing some short chapters or something but in graphic novel style, maybe you would be interested in writing it and I could do the art for it?!?

Wayhay! I totally appreciate the enthusiasm, brother! I have signed up for it and I'm looking forward to doing battle! That is... when I get weapons and stuff. Until then, spare me, sire haha!

I was just about to say that maybe in the future, when our schedules align, we could do a full-fledged comic together. Maybe even a STEEM-based web comic. It's funny, my former potential collaborator has been doing a wild west comic himself. Unfortunately, he and his girlfriend broke up, and his girlfriend was our link, so yeah..

I'm definitely interested in writing that for sure! That could be sort of our test run for future collaboration!

I'm 100% on board! Lets make something happen! (In about a month! lol)

HAHA! Let's! I totally get that! I have a lot on my plate right now, so whenever we have more time, count me in haha!

This totally resonates with me because I used to love comic books and MAD Magazine. None of the other kids had the same humor -- and frankly, I knew I was different as a child but never knew exactly why until I was assessed with Asperger's as an adult in my 30s. Which is not to say that you're on the scale too but why I get you and the quirky, geeky things. LOL

Another thing we have in common is getting stuck in a line for several seconds. For example: The Harry Potter books. Did you know that I couldn't read the first book until after I saw the movie? It's because every time I saw Hermione I kept pausing. My mind could not get past the name because I didn't know how it was pronounced. When I saw the movie I finally knew! By then I'd read Books 2 and 3 before I returned to Book 1. LOL But that's what my brain does. If it's a spelling or grammar error or a word/name that I can't pronounce, I become a scratchy record.

btw - my favorite comic book series was Star Wars. One of these days I need to start collecting them again. My mother threw mine out a long, long time ago. Very sad.

I'm on the scale too, I was often thought of as being hyperactive as a child. To what degree, I can't say for sure. But, I'm definitely on there. Nice to here that even though we're miles and cultures apart, there are a lot of similarities like that. Though I think most of my differences are brought upon by misunderstood introversion.

Ach! Those thick ones are a real hurdle for me! That's why I trained myself to just fill in gaps so that I could skip lines and get on with it. The struggle is real, but I don't have to tell you that haha! It's comforting to hear of others having their own ticks. I have quite a few annoying ones myself and it'll take all day just to list them. Thanks for sharing these here though, my friend. You don't know the relief this brings :D

There are tons of new Star Wars series that really pay homage to the classics. I think you'll find them enjoyable to read. Though I'm sure that paperback copies of the old ones are easily attainable as well. It's never too late to regain the collection.

Thanks for stopping by, Mere! :D

Will this series improve your lives and make you better lovers.

You make a great sales person. So where do I sign up? :)

Oh mate, sales are my jam. Salespeople are my kind of people. I really enjoy them every time I go to the mall and they sell me stuff that I have no use of. Or, when I wake up in the middle of the night because they want to talk to me about their Lord and savior, the almighty credit card. They are gems.

Haha! I knew that you were going to spot that line haha! Come back next week and leave a comment so that you can sign your soul, I meant, uh, sign your whole support for this :/ Whole support. Yes, that's it. Heh.

Comics, comic books, drawing, writing.. even Batman, Spiderman, X-men do not exist in my world. ^^
So what am I doing here?
What interest me to finish it is how you composed the article. I'm taking down words that I am trying to learn its meaning and hopefully to use it too.

Hashtag don't stop learning! :)
Hashtag vocabulary
😅🤣

Oh hey, even if the content is unfamiliar, at least you get to pick up something, right? I always like it when I get to help people out. If I can do it just by writing, then all the better. I appreciate you taking the time to leave your thoughts here :)

How come everything you say makes sense? whilst me here struggling. Haha
I really like your writings. Be it comment, caption or articles. the feeling of being intimidated and pressured both in a good way. :)

It doesn't translate well from Tagalog, so you would need to construct it using English. Think of it as a challenge so that you can get better haha

Hahaha! Thank you for the help, means a lot!

Don't mention it!

We grew up reading Komiks. We're subscribed to a few titles and there's one for every day of the week. A lot of the movies back then were based on Komiks nobelas, like Blusang Itim, Zuma, Darna, and a whole host of other drama movies. I guess that's why my brother and I developed the skill to read fast, because there's always someone waiting in line. Good times.

Great times indeed! Now that everything is available online, there's really no need to wait in line. The experience of physically anticipating has all but disappeared. Instant gratification is almost mandatory at this point. The availability of the international titles really forced people to appreciate the local blend, which is nice. I feel like there's a lot of local talent that goes unnoticed. I do hope that equal opportunity would be presented for them.

I liked comic books, too. But as our ages differ considerably, there are no spidermans and such on my list. I'll check and hope you make me laugh.

If you don't mind me asking, how old are you? I plan on writing about comic book movies and TV series here, to make it more accessible for everyone. I hope that even if you're not up to date on that, you would still get something from reading.

Well, I feel like 1000 when I'm watching what is coming. In human counting I'm nearing 60. Otherwise I just feel like me, like having no age. Just write what you wanted to. I watch movies a whole lot differently than others. Lately, I watched some movies that I've seen decades ago and I nearly fell off the chair for what I've seen there. So, it might be just as much in it for me as in the traffic koans.

I do hope it would have that same sort of effect. This one's more commentary than creative though, just to set expectations.

Like yourself I have always been a slow reader, it’s why I prefer poetry and short story to novels. As a kid I would go to the drugstore with friends and rumage through the comics. I always preferred warner brothers, bugs bunny etc to the super hero’s. After looking at them I never bought them, I preferred to invest in baseball cards. None-the-less comics are something I have fond memories of.

I hope the baseball cards have paid off! Seeing the old superhero comics, I can't blame you for your choice. If I were in your shoes, I would've made the same decision. Bugs Bunny and all the others like him are just solid classics that you won't ever go wrong in choosing them. Thanks for sharing this story, man! I appreciate it :D

Bro you are a great writer, I like you writing.

Thanks! I appreciate the compliment. I like me writing, too. Better than me singing, I can tell you that much.

Great thoughts!

Thanks! I appreciate the compliment :D
