Is anyone else just not that excited about the prospect of preparing and consuming food?

I'm just not that into Food

Since I started exercising regularly after a 'heavy' first semester at University, which involved takeaways, plenty of beer, and a lot of sleep, I've been fairly unexcited about the prospect of eating. Food to me is mainly viewed an energy source, and the prospect of preparing time-consuming meals has never been high on my agenda. Is anyone else just not that interested in food, or am I lacking imagination and taste-buds?

Eat to enjoy, or eat out of necessity?

Great! The working day is complete, i'll just head home and relax for an hour. Oh wait, I have to get some food together for this evening, and prepare lunch for tomorrow. BORING! To me, this is a pain in the arse, I want to go to the gym, go for a bike ride, sit in the park and read. Alas no, my stomach tells me I'm hungry, and I need some energy to do the tasks above anyway. So I guess it's the kitchen first again this evening, what a chore!

Same is good, less math required

So at this point, i'm wondering if there's a touch of OCD in my eating. The old (and still frequent bar the non-vegan foods) meal plan would be porridge for breakfast, protein shake, egg whites, chicken/or tuna and veg for lunch, and something similar for evening meal. I'd weigh most items, stick everything into Myfitnesspal to calculate calories, fat, protein, carbs, and check if i was lacking any vitamins or minerals. When i'd found the right balance with the foods, that's what i'd continue to eat each day. There would be plenty of feedback at work, 'Dont you get bored of eating the same thing?', 'Let me guess.... Tuna, pasta, peas?'. And i'd be like, 'Yep, 40g protein, 50g carbs, and 15g fat, what's in your food?'. Of course, the answer wasn't related to nutritional information, which to me just seemed ignorant, or lazy. Did people not give a shit what they were eating, or was I just way over the top with it?

Can we skip to the future?

In the future, movies have shown us that we will be replacing a plate of food with a small round biscuit, with the taste of a roast dinner, to provide us with all the nutrients we need for the day. Are we there yet? For me this sounds great. I'll take the 40P/50C/10F please. Oh and can i get a the strawberry gateaux flavour with the extra vitamin D? 4 of those a day and i'd be happy. Just think how many hours would be saved in the kitchen each week, chopping vegetables, stirring a pan, washing up over a sink built for small people of centuries gone by. I'm not a giant by the way, but why aren't kitchen sinks higher? Anyway, i'll not care when my food tablet is in the supermarket....

Sorry to disappoint you Asher, but science says they cant fit all the calories you need into a pill, yet.

Preaching to the unconverted

Judging by the number of food posts, recipes, and general food porn photos, this blog is likely not to resonate with many. I'm just wondering if there are others who also care less about eating the food, than what it provides them with nutritionally. Mainly so i can feel better about myself for just not showing much love for 'one of life's pleasures', the joy of scoffing your face with whatever you can get your mouth around.

Thanks for reading today.

Asher

Me!!! I am trying to change my attitude toward food because I feel like my resentment of it actually contributes to my weight being a bit more than I'd like. But, in general, yeah. Food is annoying! Takes so much time to make and then it's never worth it when you eat it. That's how it is for me, anyway. :)

Thanks for your comment! I find that if you've calculated the foods 'healthiness' then you are less annoyed with prepping it and eating, cause I know at least something good will come out of the ordeal!

When I started my first full time job I ate at McDonalds for a few months almost exclusively because I was so busy. I regretted it for a long time, but sometimes it feels like you don't have a choice.

You are right, preparing food takes a lot of time. On the other hand, I have heard that prepping food had a positive psychological effect on the person who does it. Who knows.

Thank you so much for this. Following you. I hope you have a WONDERFUL day!!

The reason that you're so unexcited is not because you're different, but rather because you have a wrong approach to food. You create food out of necessity and count fats/carbs/protein. Stop this methodical approach and just start cooking jummy things, don't eat for energy or gains. Keep in mind that fat is good, the more the merrier. Go on fasts occasionally and do intermittent fasting regularly, it saves you a lot of time while boosting appetite.

Wrong, or different to you? Food is essential, and we won't last long without it. Same goes for breathing, but that just happens, no time wasted there. Why can't we have the same for food, and sleep for that matter? 😁 Thanks for your comments!

I spend half of my life excited about eating and sleeping and the other half really annoyed that I have to take time out of my day to do both of those.

That sounds about right! What an (essential) waste of time they are! Thanks for the comments :)

I shudder to think about the amount of time I spend preparing food alone. My wife has a lot of food allergies and our 8 year old is a typical kid who won't tell us what the hell he want so it's a never ending guessing game. So in my house I do most of the cooking and it takes up a lot of my time. Oh and then there's the dishes and cleaning the counters and sweeping the floor after as needed.

It would be great if there was more healthy pre made food available. It'd also be great if I had a self driving car so I could actually use some of the hour that I waste driving to and from work actually doing something productive.

Menial tasks are death by a thousand cuts. And I die

Damn! Sounds like you've got your work cut out! Pre-planning and multi-meal prep is sounding pretty essential in your case! And death by 1000 cuts is a sadly accurate way of putting it!

I thought this was awesome haha. I went through the same pizza/beer mode when I started school, which lead to acid reflux. I had work from 8-5 and then class from 5:30-8:30 for at least a year. That was exactly the mentality in my head, throwing anything down my gullet I could get in ten minutes and I was paying the price for it. That's when I had to start learn more about nutrition and what my body needed.

Oops! Yeah that's not a good routine but there's just more important and interesting things to do than cook n eat!
Thanks for reading!

The annoying thing is the preparation. I only enjoy cooking when I'm gonna share the food. When I'm alone, I'll just stick to pasta and boiled eggs haha. I've seen a traveler who went through all the trouble of following a complicated and time-consuming recipe, only to sit down and eat his own food in front of everyone lol.

Preparing only for yourself is pretty boring. My only pleasure comes from knowing the nutritional value of what i'm consuming. And yeah, if your are going to go to great lengths to produce an epic meal, at least bloody share it!

Well, there's always the $3 Pad Thai, already prepared. I even converted our conversation to a post lol. Check it out.

Love it! So tempted. I'll have to get a new bikini though to boost ratings :p

Hahaha, maybe that will attract big whales.

i'm used to that! haha

You are not alone! (As all of the other comments here can attest.)

I have a fast metabolism, and suffer flu-like symptoms any time I skip a meal. Even so, I try to keep my eating down to a couple of substantial meals a day, just to reduce the tedium of food prep and cleaning up.

Perhaps the only down-side of living in such a beautiful, isolated place as we do, is that we can't run out on the quick for take-out or fast food. There's one Chinese place that delivers here, and we've got them on speed dial. Their generous portions can get us through several meals.

But then there's the expense of food. There's nothing more depressing than shopping for groceries, a process which in itself takes a couple of hours. You get to the check-out line and discover you've got to pay over $100 for stuff that will literally be crap in less than a week. All that money, effort, and time right down the toilet...

I was ordering a piece of cheesecake at a cafe the other day. I asked the barista about the calorie content of the different slices, and then surprised her when I ordered the one with the most. (Godiva Chocolate, 700+ calories.) "Look," I said, "if I'm spending money for food, why wouldn't I want to get the most for my dollar?*

Obviously I don't obsess as much about nutritional content as you do.

A filling response, thank you!

I'm currently in the kitchen making a vegetable curry, and I'm a tully feeling ok about it as it will be spicy, and hopefully tasty!

Fast food is just terrible all round, you live in heaven being close to few outlets. I'll shall visit shortly to see if I can find out where.

Thank you also for the re-steem!

Thanks for the great read.

How about making a double batch of that curry and sending some my way?

I'd love to but it's heading to work with me tomorrow, I could mention it to the lady but I have to warn you she gets a bit vicious over food!

This post made me ponder for a while Asher and I do get where you're coming from. How I overcame this was by romancing myself with cooking and eating. Firstly it's the thought of having a nutritious meal in your tool of a body and how you are going to feel afterwards, and then comes the prep-work. Stick some music on, and make the effort more effortless by turning it into an enjoyable experience. It's an arduous thing to do, but failing to prepare, is preparing to fail your body. I'm not a big foodie but your point resonated with me. Upvoted.

Thanks for the comment. I do believe I'd enjoy the whole process a bit more if I learned to love it, get some music on, make the kitchen a comfortable place, etc.

However, I don't think time in the kitchen equals quality of diet and nutrition. I mean, I've prepared 5 or so dishes that are really healthy constantly for 20 years now. They are also very quick to prep/cook and eat!

That's it really isn't it, the time in the Kitchen? We all want to save time as we only have 24hrs in a day and it's about making it as convenient as possible, like with a bit of kitchen machinery. You're right about us all heading toward a four course meal in a pack of biscuits, but that's not soul food. What you're making is soul food and that's the only positive addition I could add to the whole food prep experience. Just has to be done dude. ;-)

Dear Asher,
I have resteemed this post. I rarely do such a thing.

Stella

Thank you very much @stellabelle! Food isn't so high on your agenda either?

I dislike cooking, I dislike cleaning, I am okay with eating, but it isn't the center of my life!

Out of the 3 it is the winner, but yes, I could find plenty more exciting things to be doing! Thanks for the comment :)

For me, I find it all very exhausting. Calculating p/c/f and making a meal that i find delicious and satisfying.. did i mention.. im a picky eater.. which makes it that much harder lol then there is the actual cooking part.. ugh..

Yeah i understand, i think i just took the fun out of eating to make it all easier to compute. I didn't mention i don't really like eating out, as i have much less idea of nutrient count!

I'm picky in that i rarely eat food with little health value. What don't you like to eat?

Omg soo much hahaha and im horrible with textures lol i love meat. Hate seafood. There are very few veggies i enjoy. Im basically a 35 year old toddler lmao

I quit meat recently, to do this you really need to like vegetables and fruit! Peas are ok though right?!

Hate peas hahahaha

carrots?!

Yeah i can tolerate carrots lol

Also, being that im a student, wife and mother, im currently broke and dont have much time for time consuming meal prep hahaha

Sign me up here.

I don't even calc the nutrients because I know, as long as you aren't sick and eat halfway diverse, you are not lacking anything.

Food preparation is such a pain and waste of time. I want Star Trek preparation!
Say the word, wait 5 seconds and you have your lovely food, even placed on the plate!

I'm with you on that! I wasn't a big Star Trek fan so I missed the 5 second meal on a plate. Fingers crossed eh!

O.o you have never seen that? The best thing in the series?

Of course sometimes it takes a bit longer then 5 seconds.

And they are sometimes hard to maintain.

Haha great, thanks for the vids!

What a future we have to look forward to!

I love food (too much)!!! BUT my best friend is exactly like you. She also wishes for food pills. Which would be a nightmare for me. We're all different and that should be celebrated!

Yes the tablets wouldn't be for everyone, I have friends who would want to take back all the food they'd ever cooked for me if they read this! Thanks for your comments :)

It's rather cool I agree! I'll get my thinking cap on 😁

Oh yeah! I've not seen this before, thanks!

I will add my two cents (well more like 0.00002 cents) into this commentary. Forgive me if someone already mentioned this. I'm too lazy to read through all those comments.

Well, I have felt the same way for a while as well. I also realized that I have a lot of intolerances to certain foods which made figuring out something healthy to eat that much more annoying.

I found something called breatharianism on YouTube. And no, I am not a breatharian. But seemingly sane people are actually doing this. One man actually allowed himself to be monitored for a whole week to verify that he was not eating. Anyway, if people are actually doing this it's not so smart to tell everyone about it because everyone will call them crazy and put them in the funny farm. But since you're already thinking along those lines you might want to check it out.

The process involves a lot of meditation and being spiritual and yadda yadda yadda - which many may find annoying/unappealing. Anyway, it's another way of looking at things.

Kirby De Lanerolle also did a Tedx talk on the subject that can also be found on YouTube. Crazy or humanity evolving? You decide.

It's another option to consider but I've not fallen out that much with food yet! Thanks for the comments :)

i hate cooking!
I also have a pet peeve: because I am female, people think i will love their cooking blogs! I won't!
I hate photos of food! Gross!
Why do people do this?
If there was a pill i could take everyday that represented all my body needs, I'd do it!
Then i'd have a bowl of ice cream.

Yes! I feel vindicated for hating on food a little!, having wondered last night if I might lose a few foodie followers, I'm glad to hear the same opinions!

Ah, no, not a pill. That is too boring.

A bowl of ice cream with everything you need, now that's an alluring thought....

I'm with you on this. Sports posts and food posts send me scrolling right past.

Tried bulletproof coffee in the morning to get the 4-600 kcal ? I love food.. And been drinking it for 2 years now almost everyday. But its kinda addictive i can see.. its just to easy and yammie.. But for people who dont want to prep or do a lot - IT is perfect and healthy :) <3 @camelx - @abh12345

and my partner is a PN coach and on Steemit. he has some info here @healthpac

What is this bulletproof coffee you speak of?

Thank you! Bookmarked! I guess it's working for you with regards to body, mind, and soul? :)

absolutely :D i'm all in for all fat ;)

You (and you man) don't look like you consume much fat, or is that all the sports activities burning it all?

No almost only consume Healthy fats and veggies and meat - fish.. No processed food. Eating healthy.. The bulletproof coffee can actually help you loose weight. You get in a "false" ketosis. And will be able to go to work and do all chores without feeling hungry before maybe 4-6 hours.. So i wont recommend it if you arent supposed to loose weight or forget to eat.. If i drink this 9 in the morning. i have to check myself and eat latest 12-13 again. Then egg - bacon - whatever you have. and tons of kale and chopped veggies. then dinner again. But we dont eat GLUTEN or any sugar.. Or margarine or plant oil beside Avokado - Olive and coconut oil. Healthy fats and the bad fats. It works for us.. I dont train that much.. My man he does, But eating these amounts of fat arent gonna make anyone gaining weight. It's almost going on a Ketosis Diet.. Just low carb.. And dark chocholate everyday. SUGAR & GLUTEN - NO NO NO.. I have this in my blog. I use to be big.. and it wasnt the workout. it's the food. for sure :) @abh12345 here if you want to look https://steemit.com/norway/@camelx/crazy-passion-for-healthy-food-pictures-all-homemade-from-scratch-check-for-inspiration-part-1

this is HILARIOUS!!!!!

Oh wait, I have to get some food together for this evening, and prepare lunch for tomorrow. BORING!

I KNOW!

IT'S SO FUCKING BORING...
If Steem Moons, I'm getting a live-in chef!

Or get a Maid Dragon. But watch out, they like to put in their tails

Sounds like a great idea, I hope they will shop for it too!

Now where's my breakfast tablet...

I enjoy yummy food. I can't bring myself to eat anything I do not find tasty.

I'm sortof strange- when I was waiting tables I stopped eating. I was never hungry after smelling food all day, and sometimes a tad nauseated- even tho it was good quality food... and I also stop eating when I'm stressed.

Stress will de-prioritize food!

Taste is a bonus, healthiness is key! Different foods for different dudes? :)

Different foods for different dudes! lol yes!

This is funny. I have thought about the exact same thing before. In future we may simply require a pill. I think one of the reasons we may not enjoy food as much as we could these days is because most food is not as tasty as it used to be. Because of like pesticides and stuff that kill the good bacteria in food - the microbes.

I've also heard that food is healthier and tastier if you eat it with your hands. Even like moist food. Another interesting thing I have heard that is kind of related, is where the saying "born with a silver spoon in the mouth" comes from. During the depression/plague I'm not sure, the rich kids' silverware was actually made of silver and silver boosts your immune system massively.

Sounds like another reason to keep stacking the silver!

After reading the feedback here, and although there's some support for me view, i would say i'm just a bit lazy to 'work' on making awesome tasting food. I'd still much rather spend 10 mins making something healthy, than 50 making something delicious :)

Are you buying silver?

Laziness - I don't know if that is the problem. There is this book called The Four Hour Work Week where the author talks about if you want to succeed in business, get other people to do stuff that you don't like to do or are not good at doing. So yeah, why not just get someone else to make you a salad at a restaurant.

The thing with me is when I see a chocolate brownie it does something to my brain. I just can't seem to resist it, but then again why should I?

I have a bit of silver yes, should have bought BTC instead though! (this was 2013)

Salads i can do, they don't take a lot of time and can be very healthy, or not if you salsa them up!

Chocolate brownies are rather good and hard to resist. Resist 6 days out of 7?
I hear the are not good for you all the time :)

I wonder how much it would cost to buy silver silverware? How much was BTC in 2013?

Yeah you are right salads can be quick but I don't think salsa is unhealthy necessarily?

Yeah maybe other way around 1 out of 7.

Hey, sorry fella i rarely miss a reply but checking down the list i saw this one!

BTC was $16.35 on the 21st January 2013! DAMN

https://99bitcoins.com/price-chart-history/

I get excited only at the prospect of consuming it.

It's the highlight of the whole process but if it's going to take me 20 minutes to do so i'm not happy! I watched an ex gf spend an hour crunching a crab up for very little meat a while back, never would i waste my time like that!

You can eat less. Intermittent fasting has been shown to be massively healthy.

Once you avoid a meal enough the body adapts to not be hungry at that time. Hunger only kicks in because of eating habits. Research Ghrelin hormone.
