What is fitness and who is fit - explained through 10 general physical skills

in #fitness7 years ago

Physical fitness is a state of health and well-being; it is the ability to perform well in sports, occupations and daily activities. Fitness is generally achieved through proper nutrition, physical exercise, and sufficient rest.

There are 10 general physical skills and a person can only be considered fit if he or she has a high level of competence in all of them:

  1. Cardiovascular/respiratory endurance - the ability of body systems to gather, process, and deliver oxygen.
  2. Stamina - the ability of body systems to process, deliver, store, and utilize energy.
  3. Strength - the ability of a muscular unit, or combination of muscular units, to apply force.
  4. Flexibility - the ability to maximize the range of motion at a given joint.
  5. Power - the ability of a muscular unit, or combination of muscular units, to apply maximum force in minimum time.
  6. Speed - the ability to minimize the time cycle of a repeated movement.
  7. Coordination - the ability to combine several distinct movement patterns into a singular distinct movement.
  8. Agility - the ability to minimize transition time from one movement pattern to another.
  9. Balance - the ability to control the placement of the bodies center of gravity in relation to its support base.
  10. Accuracy - the ability to control movement in a given direction or at a given intensity

Thus, no matter how fast and long can you run, you're not fit if you can't lift a decent weight; no matter how much weight you can lift, you're not fit if you can't jump rope or touch your feet with your hands while your legs are straight.

How fit are you? 😊

Have a wonderful day, week, and life!

Wow...I never knew there were so many components to being fit. Practicing gymnastics has helped me with strength, balance and a lot on your list, but I know one thing I need to work on is cardio and endurance. Thanks for your tips.

You're most welcome, @victoriacalloway. Yes, gymnastics is pretty comprehensive, but no single activity is completely balanced. Thank you for reading.

Fitness is the very important on human body. Thanks for your post @lifenbeauty.

Love this! There are so many aspects of being fit, and none of them should be neglected. We all have our weak spots, and we tend to avoid practicing them, since we rather do the things we're already good at. I think for me, one of the weakest spots is stretching. I'm just really good at making up excuses not to have time for stretching... Thanks for the reminder, I think I'm going to go do some stretching right away so I won't skip it again. :)

Hey, @jasmink, thank you! Yep, do we tend to stay in our comfort zones. If flexibility is your weak side, you could consider learning and doing some yoga. 😊

I've actually taken part in yoga classes, and find it so good for both the body and the mind! However, at the moment I'm not taking part in any yoga classes, and therefore, I haven't done it as frequently as before. But it's something I really want to recommence! 😊

Well, I think that it's very important to go to yoga classes at least for a couple of months, because that way you learn principles of correct stretching, breading, holding a position etc. Once you've learned those principles, you can do stretching much more efficiently even at home. : )

That's so true! And when it comes to yoga, I think that you'll learn always something new when attending a class, that's one of the reasons why I love them so much. 😊

So, what, in your opinion is the difference between Stamina and Endurance?

Stamina (the ability of body systems to process, deliver, store, and utilize energy) is the ability of your muscles to do a relatively high number of medium intensity repetitions such as body-weight squats.

Endurance (the ability of body systems to gather, process, and deliver oxygen) is your cardiovascular system's ability to run or swim for a long time without losing your breath.

Yes. In order for us to be really fit, we have to have a balance of all these kinds of physical skills.
Thank you for sharing this @lifenbeauty
Very well explained

You're most welcome, Joanna, thank you for reading. : )

Good resumen about high level athletes' physical skills. In gamma workout our columns are strength, endurance and flexibility to be better athletes. Blessings from Venezuela, visit our blog ;)

Thanks for stopping by, @gammaworkout.

Nice columns, those are some of the basics if your goal is to have a healthy body. Skills like coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy are more neurological than physical.

Greetings from Serbia! 😊

Oh no....i thought i was actually fit, @lifenbeauty. I mean, i meet several of the criteria above, if only you hadn't concluded by saying

you're not fit if you can't......... touch your feet with your hands while your legs are straight.

Lol..that should now enter my exercise regime

Thanks for the info. Certainly helpful. You know there are many people out there who think because they can life a log or run miles, or make 100 push-ups, they are fit!

They should read this.

good thing is, there's always something to work on. bad thing is...there is always something to work on.

Ha! That puts me in the middle! But true, that is what 'improvement' means. And we always have to improve. There is such thing as perfection! Not with fitness anyway, i'd think

Hey @mirrors, thank you for reading (although not upvoting).

Yes, most people tend to have "holes" in their overall fitness. If flexibility is your weaker side, you could benefit greatly from going to yoga classes for some time. : )

Hahahahahaahh @lifenbeauty, what is wrong with you? lol... that ((although not upvoting).. so damn straight! So point blank. Hahahah.

Any way, you can be sure it was not deliberate. Your write here certainly does deserve as many upvotes as possible, mine no less. I don't know how it skipped my fingers!

The thing is that there are many people who intentionally just comment posts in order to get authors' upvotes while using their own voting power for something else (leasing, self-voting, circle jerking, and similar), which is one of the habits that irritates me the most on Steemit - that's why I'm so damn straight and point blank about it. Cheers! :D

Oh, i didn't even think of that. I guess it comes with some experience around here.

But of course as you say, that irritates, and is certainly very discourteous.

Thanks for clarifying. I hope you are having a great weekend. I am.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who spends a life time trying to get this balance right. Just when you think you have it something throws it off.

I'm not striving for a perfect balance, but I think that it's important to keep all general physical skills at a decent level. Thanks for stopping by, @anthrovegan. : )

I always thought exercise was meant for people trying to loose weight. Then i stumbled on other benefits of exercise, just like the ones mentioned in this post.

Since i picked up the challenge to exercise for at least 20min a day, i can say i am more agile, mentally alert, i have more stamina and i am more comfortable with my body.

This is a very good article, and will help people who reason as i did.

Hello is interesant thanks for this article.

Stamina and strength come first..And all the characteristics of fitness will come to you when you play Soccer or Football. It will fresh your mind too..And freshness of mind is more important than one's fitness(i think).

Excellent article and great contribution to the education of human body. I think that the basis of everything is a good diet and a moderate exercise routine. Blessings and success for you. Greetings. @lifenbeauty

When I was younger I was a lot more active then I have been for the past few years. I've recently started working out again and I can say that after just a few weeks I'm already feeling better than I have in years. It really makes a difference. I'm now motivated to be fitter and stronger than I ever have been. Wish me luck!

Great post btw!

Thank you, @kkbaardsen.

It's great to find motivation again, good luck with the workouts! : )
