Only recently have I discovered that there is a name for this mental condition I live in is Excessive Daydreaming. For some scholars, it is seen as a mental disorder, but it is not officially as it is a relatively new diagnosis and they are still doing research in psychiatry. Some professionals have never even heard of it, but the truth is that it exists.
Excessive daydreaming is when you can spend hours imagining possibilities; imagining how you would like your life to be. But it's not just a momentary imagination, it's like you could devote hours of your day to it.
When you have this condition, you really live and feel intensely everything you imagine, it feels like real life... But it's not, and anyone who suffers from excessive daydreams knows that. Unlike schizophrenia, where a person does not know what is an illusion and what is real, the person who has excessive daydreams knows exactly what is real but still chooses to delight in illusions.
Illusions promote happiness, horny, genuine joy… Until we stop imagining, and what follows is a little tiredness and sadness, sometimes frustration.
What differentiates a person who has excessive daydreams from a person who only likes to imagine, is that daydreams come to disrupt the person's real life; you can't study, you can't work well, and worst of all: you can't live in the present. You can be in an amazing place like a beach with a splendid landscape, or a restaurant eating the best food you've ever eaten in your life and at the same time, mentally, you're not there, you're imagining life differently...
... It's sad. And I've struggled with this for many years. But only a few days ago I discovered the name of this condition. Nowadays I can say that I'm much better because I can stop, I can concentrate, and not get carried away by the daydream… But a few years ago, it was just impossible for me to be happy without living in my imagination.
Of course, there are many triggers for this to still happen to me, but I learned to avoid them over time. For example, when I listen to music through headphones and go jogging or cycling, or when I listen to music on the bus, or when I've had a stressful day and lie down for a few moments, my mind just float in direction to a perfect world, where I imagine the best things that could happen in my life… I let myself go for a few moments until I feel totally relaxed, then I'll be back before it's too late. I know if stay there for so much time when gone, when it's over, I'll be frustrated. It is like a drug.
Yesterday I went out drinking with a friend, and while we were drinking and talking I confessed to her that I had excessive daydreams, to my surprise she said 'Oh my God, me too! I even talk to myself, and even gesture in my daydreams!” I was very surprised and we laughed a lot at the coincidence.
We ended the conversation about this by questioning whether we are like that because we are both Scorpio. lol
Well, I don't know, but I think it's common to have excessive daydreams… Maybe more people around me do, but no one has the courage to talk about it, after all, it's kind of insane, isn't it?
Oh God!, I thought I was the only one going crazy and feeling frustrated..
Excessive day dreaming as you call it has been my battle and I still can't defeat it till today..
I just do it everyday and it has been happening to me for so long and just like you said, the end result is alway ls sadness and frustration..
I imagine things and how I want my life to be and snapping out of the imagination to face reality makes me feel I'm having the worst time... Sometimes after these imaginations, you begin to ask yourself, is this how I'm gonna make it...?
Does going to school help or should I go into trade / business? This wealthy people, how did they do it?, and later I we nd doing things people do just to be like them..
I always drown in my thoughts and imagination, @aiuna how did you stop this?...
I try the music thing, sports and I always try to keep my self busy but it's not just working, I end up going back to this imaginations....
Please help
I know you are passing. It's hard for me to tell you how to help because it took me years to perfect, and I still suffer from it. You need to show your mind who's boss. When you are going into a daydream, you need to tell yourself that you need to go back, you need to affirm to yourself that it is not real, it is not true life to be imagining... You need to focus on the present moment. I'm always trying to rescue myself when I go into a daydream, I rarely allow myself to be taken too long these days... But it's hard work. You need to realize that being in dreaming is self-deception, and that will only happen if you repeat to yourself over and over again that it's not real life and that you'll never have what you imagine. You have to give yourself reality shocks all the time.
Day dreaming is sure real and very common, when I was in college there was this class mate of mine who will spent hours day dreaming in the class about fashion designs .
She later drop out of school to start fashion designing.
I think one should learn how to pay attention when it becomes excess, by trying to keep yourself occupy and focus with activities.
That's exactly what I'm looking to do.
Hello dear, I think it's very common and usually happens with everyone. It also depends on which phase of life you are in. But we should keep it in control and not effect our efficiency and touch with the reality. After how we can fulfil dreams if we don't gonna work for it, lol. I would suggest you to try to keep your busy all time, don't sit ideal for long. Also you can make your family members or friends to keep an eye on you, mention them to not let you into go into wonderland for long. Try avoiding activities which leads you into it for a while . Also engage with others and do activities which require complete attention and focus. you will find some improvement in you. Also don't worry about it much, be resolved and relaxed. Have a good day 😊🙏

I don't think it's a phase of life, because for as long as I can remember I've been like that. But over the years, I managed to get better and better and have control over it. Without a doubt, keeping busy is the key.
This just shows you have a higher strength of imaginations, if it's well channelled you will end up to become a good problem solver, I was once struggling with this issue but I was motivated when I saw a kid who is also struggling with same issue this helps me to read more about it. Let's just say your brain is always trying to fix something by bringing it's picture to reality
Does this happen while you are working and talking with others or only when you are alone?
It only happens when I'm not talking to someone or when I'm not doing something that requires my attention, meaning any idle time is a trigger for this. Unless I am focusing my attention on an activity, I can be attracted to intense daydreams.
This seems like a normal activity for a creative person. Try using a timer when doing projects and please take a break and get up for a minute or two.
Also record your day dreams in a way that is convenient. After a few days look at the results and see if you can draw any conclusions.
These are great suggestions, @mineopoly, thanks.
