Could probably be all just a strategy, like the Squid coin, and then just dumped after the investments pull in because, who in their right minds would take those names seriously? 😂
Hi guys! For say 3 weeks in Brazil in December/January, how much money would a couple need? We'd like to stop by Brasília, which is a posh place I guess, and Belém. Putting cost of accomodation and the flights aside, would you say $1,000 is fine?
Hey man! Yea if you are not including accommodation and the flights in that, it should be fine... perhaps a little more depending on how much you guys decide to drive around while visiting these places but not much more
There is not. People have to learn to inform themselves. Governments act like they are parents and we common folk are all children.
Time for people to educate themselves on stuff.
Decentralize positively when it does not hurt the system because of corner cases is the dream... #hive is very very close to that venture! If not over that already in some places!
We can't trust them how they will regulate it. They will cause more harm the moment they step in. It is like giving them the power and authority in your space. Rather, I think they should investigate bloggers who disseminate false information and deal with them.
Here I'll be putting some of my conversations with #ChatGPT. I'll put them in both screenshots-form and text form. Mainly to give more data for LeoAI to eat from.
Answer: "Cardio" is short for cardiovascular exercise, which refers to physical activities that increase your heart rate and improve heart and lung health. Common examples include running, cycling, swimming, and walking. Cardio exercises are great for improving endurance, burning calories, and promoting overall fitness.
I Prompted ChatGPT: Tell me about the history and importance of Internet Download Manager, describe its golden age, and any fun facts people might enjoy reading about it.
Summarized Response:
Internet Download Manager (IDM), released in 2001, became popular for accelerating downloads, resuming broken downloads, and scheduling files, especially during the early 2000s when internet speeds were slower. Its golden age was marked by its ability to split files into multiple parts for faster downloading, a feature that felt revolutionary at the time. Many users remember it for its persistent trial pop-up reminders. While browsers today have more advanced download features, IDM remains nostalgic for those who relied on it for managing large file downloads.
Internet Download Manager (IDM) has been a go-to software for downloading files since its release in 2001. IDM gained popularity due to its ability to accelerate download speeds, resume broken downloads, and schedule downloads, becoming essential for users with slow or unstable internet connections. Its golden age was during the early 2000s, when high-speed internet was not widespread, and IDM's ability to handle large files efficiently made it indispensable.
A fun fact is that IDM’s “download acceleration” was achieved by splitting files into several parts and downloading them simultaneously, making it appear like magic to users back then. Another interesting tidbit: many people discovered IDM through its iconic pop-up trial reminder, which sometimes felt like it would last forever!
IDM's dominance has waned with faster internet speeds and browsers that have better built-in download managers, but it remains a nostalgic tool for many who remember its peak.
Today when I woke up and checked my $HIVE profile, something unexpected shocked me when I opened my HIVE wallet page. Yes, the price of Hive has taken another high jump and is currently being traded for 0.2328$
Just last night when I went to sleep Hive was trading for 0.20$ and I was already feeling good. But never have I ever expected that overnight, Hive would go for another wild drive.
Four people have been arrested, a camping trailer was searched, and weapons and drugs were seized, as the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said it took down a drug manufacturing and trafficking operation in the St. John's area.
In a statement, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said it had arrested two men and two women on Monday as part of an investigation that started in February.
After the arrests, police seized two vehicles and searched a camping trailer on the outskirts of the city. Police allege the trailer was being used to manufacture drugs.
At the camping trailer, police said they seized items like respirator masks, colour dyes, gas storage tanks, packaging supplies, a vacuum sealer, products that were in "various stages of manufacturing," and a number of unidentified substances stored in dishes and containers.
“End of the month coming and that sense of accomplishment. Nothing better than battling for a period of days and then seeing that everything went as planned, we are on the right track!”
I think Lions worried about “dust votes” is hurting the InLEO feed…especially since we’re in the middle of an onboarding initiative. The cosmetic effect of new users seeing more upvotes on the feed is exponentially more valuable than the half a penny you won’t receive from curation. Spread those upvotes around…doesn’t matter if u have 50 LEO or 5000! We are collectively programmed to value the “thumbs up”, so while comments definitely matter organically…upvotes matter a lot more today.

FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker was put in the hot seat on Tuesday as he fielded questions from Representative Kevin Kiley (R-Calif.), a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee’s subcommittee on aviation, regarding the delayed fifth flight of SpaceX’s Starship rocket.
During a committee hearing focused on FAA oversight of Boeing amid the manufacturer’s recent safety woes, Kiley squeezed in a few questions about Starship, which according to SpaceX has been bogged down by licensing issues “ranging from the frivolous to the patently absurd.”
“America is being smothered by legions of regulators, often inept & politically-driven,” SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said in a post on X on Thursday.
The advent of ever more powerful artificial intelligences today in the context of geopolitical rivalry between the U.S.-led West and China has prompted the organization of a similarly urgent exchange across divides called the International Dialogues on AI Safety, organized by the Safe AI Forum.
The effort is comprised of top foundational AI scientists from both China and the West, including the Turing Award winners Yoshua Bengio, Andrew Yao and Geoffrey Hinton, among others, including Ya-Qin Zhang, the former president of Baidu. Its first meeting was held at Bletchley Park, home of the World War II codebreakers, outside of London in 2023. In 2024, the group met in Beijing at the Aman Summer Palace. The dialogue has just concluded its third conclave — and reached the most substantive consensus so far — at the Berggruen Institute’s Casa dei Tre Oci in Venice.
It seems, the further we go, the less of a threat AI is. The fearmongering about it being the end is overblown. There is no reason to fear AI, at least large language models.
We are creating artificial knowledge, not artificial intelligence.
NASA, the American space agency, and SpaceX, rocket manufacturer owned by tycoon Elon Musk, postponed until Saturday, the 28th, the launch of the Crew-9 mission due to a tropical storm that will hit Cape Canaveral, in Florida (USA) , the place from where the spacecraft would take off.
According to the “Space” website, one of the objectives of the project is to reach the ISS (International Space Station – in translation) to bring back astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams. The duo has been in space since June 5th, when they participated in a test flight of Boeing's Starliner spacecraft.
In a statement released this Tuesday, 24, NASA reported that storm “Helene” could impact Florida with heavy rain and winds, which would affect the launch of the Falcon 9 rocket. According to the space agency, the mission will not take place before the afternoon of September 28th.
NASA highlighted that, until the day of takeoff, the teams that make up the mission will rehearse launching the rocket. Crew-9 will send astronauts Nick Hague and Aleksandr Gorbunov to the ISS, where they will spend a few months, and bring back Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore when they return, only in 2025.
Astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams were the first to participate in a test launch of Boeing's Starliner on June 5. The spacecraft departed from Florida, in the United States.
Initially, the duo's mission was supposed to last a maximum of a week, but months later, the two are still on the ISS.
According to NASA, five of the spacecraft's 28 capsule thrusters failed during docking with the ISS. Subsequently, the equipment was restarted and only one did not work again. The American space agency's suspicions are that the heat of the procedure caused the shutdown. Furthermore, according to Boeing, a helium leak was identified in the spacecraft.
The test mission is Boeing's last step before receiving a certificate from NASA that allows it to carry out routine flights with astronauts, alongside Elon Musk's SpaceX.
It’s great to see a space like this dedicated to technology discussions! With how fast tech is evolving, having a hub for learning and sharing insights is invaluable. I'm already having a good time here

OpenAI's board is considering plans to restructure the firm to a for-profit business. CTO Mira Murati and two top research execs said they are leaving.
OpenAI's board is considering plans to restructure the firm to a for-profit business, according to a source who asked to remain anonymous because the talks are ongoing. The company will retain its non-profit segment as a separate entity, the source said.
The structure would be more straightforward for investors and would make it easier for OpenAI employees to realize liquidity, the source added.
News of the discussions comes after OpenAI Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati said Wednesday that she is leaving the company after six and a half years.
Later in the day, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said research chief Bob McGrew and Barret Zoph, a research vice president, are also departing, as the high-valued artificial intelligence startup continues to lose top talent.
Murati wrote in a memo to the company that she's "stepping away because I want to create the time and space to do my own exploration." She said her focus will be on ensuring a "smooth transition."
"After much reflection, I have made the difficult decision to leave OpenAI," she wrote in the memo, which she also published on social media site X. "There's never an ideal time to step away from a place one cherishes, yet this moment feels right."
Altman wrote in a late afternoon post on X that McGrew and Zoph were leaving, and that their decisions were independent of each other.
"The timing of Mira's decision was such that it made sense to now do this all at once, so that we can work together for a smooth handover to the next generation of leadership," Altman wrote.
They're the latest high-level executive to depart OpenAI, which has exploded in popularity and value since releasing the ChatGPT chatbot in late 2022. OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever and former safety leader Jan Leike announced their departures in May. Co-founder John Schulman said last month that he was leaving to join rival Anthropic.
OpenAI, which is backed by Microsoft, is currently pursuing a funding round that would value the company at more than $150 billion, according to sources familiar with the situation who asked not to be named because details of the round have not been made public. Thrive Capital is leading the round and plans to invest $1 billion, and Tiger Global is planning to join as well.
Microsoft, Nvidia and Apple are reportedly also in talks to invest.
OpenAI's chief research officer has left the company, along with a VP of research.
OpenAI’s chief research officer, Bob McGrew, and a research VP, Barret Zoph, left the company on Wednesday, hours after OpenAI CTO Mira Murati announced she would be departing.
CEO Sam Altman revealed the two latest resignations in a post on X Wednesday evening, along with leadership transition plans.
“Mira, Bob, and Barret made these decisions independently of each other and amicably,” he said, “but the timing of Mira’s decision was such that it made sense to now do this all at once, so that we can work together for a smooth handover to the next generation of leadership.”
VP of research Mark Chen is being promoted to OpenAI’s new SVP of research, and will lead the company’s research org in partnership with Jakub Pachocki as chief scientist, Altman said.
While today’s departures are tough, I’m incredibly excited and honored to lead research at @OpenAI alongside @merettm. I truly believe that OpenAI is the best place to work on AI, and I've been through enough ups and downs to know it's never wise to bet against us.
Matt Knight, formerly head of security, will be OpenAI’s chief information security officer. And chief product officer Kevin Weil and VP of engineering Srinivas Narayanan will continue to lead OpenAI’s applied team, which is responsible for bringing the company’s tech to both enterprise and consumer customers.
Josh Achiam, a research scientist, will be taking on a new role as head of mission alignment. Altman says he’ll be “working across the company to ensure that we get all pieces and culture right to be in a place to succeed at the mission.”
“Mark, Jakub, Kevin, Srinivas, Matt, and Josh will report to me,” Altman added. “I have over the past year or so spent most of my time on the non-technical parts of our organization; I am now looking forward to spending most of my time on the technical and product parts of the company.”
In his post, Altman tried to assure staff — and those on the outside looking in — that the leadership changes were simply the normal course of business.
“Leadership changes are a natural part of companies, especially companies that grow so quickly and are so demanding,” he said. “I obviously won’t pretend it’s natural for this one to be so abrupt, but we are not a normal company, and I think the reasons Mira explained to me (there is never a good time, anything not abrupt would have leaked, and she wanted to do this while OpenAI was in an upswing) make sense.”
Meta Connect 2024 is a developer-centric event featuring a keynote from CEO Mark Zuckerberg. He showcased new hardware and software to support two of Meta’s big ambitions: AI and the metaverse. This included everything from new Quest headsets, updates to Meta’s Llama AI model, and even a new fully AR glasses prototype.
Meta Connect 2024 kicked off live at 10 a.m. PT. You can stream it from Meta Connect’s site, on Meta’s developer Facebook page, and you can even stream it in Horizon Worlds from your Meta Quest headset if you really want to feel the full immersion.
We’ll be compiling all of the announcements and reveals out of Meta Connect 2024 below and will keep it updated throughout the event and after as more reactions and analysis arrive.
In a surprise announcement, Zuckerberg dramatically revealed Orion, which Meta says will eventually become the company’s “first consumer full holographic AR glasses,” though they won’t be arriving on any consumers’ faces anytime soon. Touting Orion’s light weight, compatibility for hand-tracking and eye-tracking, and most ambitiously, a neural interface, Zuckerberg also touted some impressed, and famous, early testers (including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang). The Orion glasses were presented as the future of Meta’s AR efforts, with our own ongoing coverage of Meta Connect’s final big reveal here.
Meta’s reveal of the Quest 3S was indicated by several pre-event leaks and confirmed during Connect 2024. The Meta Quest 3S comes as a less expensive alternative to the Quest 3, starting at $299 for a 128GB version and 256GB for $399. The entirely wireless headset is compatible with the existing library of Quest apps and games, though Meta was particularly enthusiastic about its mixed-reality features. With the reveal of the Quest 3S, the Quest 3 will drop from $649 to $499.
“With Quest 3S on the shelf, we’re officially winding down sales of Quest 2 and Pro. We’ll be selling our remaining headsets through the end of the year or until they’re gone, whichever comes first,” Meta told TechCrunch about the discontinuation of two of their headsets in the wake of the Quest 3S announcement.
Meta AI is finding its voice. Users can ask a question or otherwise chat with Meta AI out loud through Messenger, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram and get simulated vocal responses in return. The digital voice assistant will roll out with multiple voice options to choose from, including the AI voices of celebrities like Dame Judi Dench, John Cena, Awkwafina, Kristen Bell, and Keegan-Michael Key.
The reveal comes a day after OpenAI announced the long-awaited rollout of its Advanced Voice Mode feature, with a new look and five new voices. And speaking of vocal announcements, Zuckerberg touted that Meta AI now has 500 million users.
The demo showcased AI Studio, a platform for designing custom chatbots.
AI has already given us some weird demos. And friends, it’s only going to get weirder from here. As the tech world runs screaming head first into the uncanny valley, lines will blur and everything will continue getting stranger.
Take, for example, Wednesday’s Meta Connect keynote. There was a constant drum beat of Meta AI and Llama demos during the event, but one in particular stood out for its strangeness.
Mark Zuckerberg invited creator Don Allen Stevenson III to join him onstage. The Meta CEO proceeded to pick up a phone and carry on a conversation with an AI-generated version of Stevenson as the genuine article stood between the exec and an image of himself on the big screen.
The demo showcased AI Studio, a platform for designing custom chatbots. The program, which rolled out to all U.S. creators in July, started with text only. Wednesday’s event, meanwhile, showcased how creators can essentially create virtual versions of themselves.
“If you’re getting a ton of DMs, and you’re missing the time to respond, Creator AI for me has been answering a lot of my frequently asked questions,” Stevenson said of how he’s used the platform. “It saves time. I have time to go outside, take a break.”
Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan said, "Using AI tools to trick, mislead, or defraud people is illegal."
The Federal Trade Commission on Wednesday announced a crackdown on what the regulator called "deceptive AI claims and schemes" by three business opportunity ventures and two companies, including the legal services firm DoNotPay.
The FTC said the five enforcement cases it has filed show how the companies and ventures "have seized on the hype surrounding" artificial intelligence "and are using it to lure consumers into bogus schemes."
"Using AI tools to trick, mislead, or defraud people is illegal," FTC Chair Lina Khan said in a statement.
"The FTC's enforcement actions make clear that there is no AI exemption from the laws on the book," Khan said. "By cracking down on unfair or deceptive practices in these markets, FTC is ensuring that honest businesses and innovators can get a fair shot and consumers are being protected."
In a complaint, the FTC said that DoNotPay, which touted its AI service as "the world's first robot lawyer," failed to live up to that claim.
While DoNotPay said its service would allow customers to sue someone for assault without an attorney, and generate valid legal documents in "no time," the company did not test whether its AI chatbot's "output was equal to the level of a human lawyer," the FTC said in a statement.
The FTC also said that DoNotPay's service that purportedly checked a small business website for federal and state violations, using only a customer's email address, was not effective in detecting those potentially costly violations.
DoNotPay, which did not admit wrongdoing, agreed to settle the FTC's charges by paying $193,000 and giving consumers who subscribed to its service from 2021 through 2023 a notice that warns them about the limitations of the service's law-related features.
"The proposed order also will prohibit the company from making claims about its ability to substitute for any professional service without evidence to back it up," the FTC said.
In one of the four other cases announced Wednesday, the FTC is suing a business opportunity scheme that has operated under names including Ascend Ecom, Ascend CapVentures, and ACV Nexus, which has been operated by two men named William Basta and Kenneth Leung.
The glasses, which are strikingly smaller than Snap’s recently announced Spectacles 5, are true AR. Orion utilizes tiny projectors built into the glasses’ temples to create a heads-up display — think the 2024 version of Google Glass.
The glasses, which Zuckerberg said were a decade in the making, don’t appear to be too far beyond the concept phase at this point. “These glasses exist, they are awesome, and they are a glimpse of a future that I think will be exciting,” the executive noted during the presentation. He added that the team still has a good bit of “fine-tuning” before Meta is ready to turn them into an official consumer product.
Notably, along with the standard voice prompts, Orion will be controlled through a “neural interface” that arrives by way of Meta’s 2019 acquisition of CTRL-labs, which makes a wristband that will be compatible with the devices.
The company is positioning the upcoming glasses as a kind of successor to its current livestream product, Ray-Ban Meta. It notes:
[W]hile Ray-Ban Meta opened up an entirely new category of display-less glasses super-charged by AI, the XR industry has long dreamt of true AR glasses — a product that combines the benefits of a large holographic display and personalized AI assistance in a comfortable, all-day wearable form factor. Orion rises to the challenge.
There are a lot of claims by Meta at the moment, such as that “Orion has the largest field of view (FOV) in the smallest AR glasses form to date.” Though we’re far too early for any specifics at this point, they can, however, be seen as a dig at the new Spectacles, which are extremely large with a very narrow FOV.
Grubhub-owner Just Eat Takeaway.com has partnered with sex toy retailer Lovehoney Group, in an unexpected expansion into the so-called sexual wellness sector.
Grubhub-owner Just Eat Takeaway.com said Thursday it had partnered with sex toy retailer Lovehoney Group, in an unexpected expansion into the so-called sexual wellness sector.
The Anglo-Dutch online takeaway delivery firm said it would sell some of Lovehoney's best-selling products, including sex toys from its popular Womanizer, We-Vibe- ROMP and Fifty Shades of Grey products lines.
The offering will be available via the company's Just Eat brand in the U.K. and Denmark, and it's Liferando food ordering service in Austria.
Shares of Just Eat Takeaway.com climbed 2% Thursday, above the pan-European Stoxx 600 index's 1% gains. The firm's shares are down around 1% over the last 6 months amid a broader decline in food delivery stocks.
Just Eat and other takeaway apps have been looking to move beyond their core food business by branching out into other product areas, such as groceries, electronic gadgets, and pharmaceuticals.
They have long talked about expanding their services to offer fast delivery of any product type — in a similar way to Amazon, with consumers now able to buy a wide array of products online and have them delivered in as little as a day.
This is the first big-name partnership of a takeaway delivery company with a sex-toy retailer, however.
"Self-care is becoming more important to consumers, and we are delighted to service our customers with the expansion of our assortment into the category," Guido Fambach, executive vice president of sales for Just Eat Takeaway.com, said in a statement Thursday.
"As we look forward, we will continue to focus on partnerships that make it easier for our consumers to seamlessly incorporate the products they know and love into their daily lives," he added.
The company said Thursday that it had entered into an agreement with Adyen to add its payments products as an option at physical payment machines used by the Amsterdam-based fintech's merchant partners.
Klarna will be included as an option across more than 450,000 Adyen payment terminals in brick-and-mortar locations as a result of the deal, according to the companies. The partnership will initially launch in Europe, North America and Australia with a wider rollout planned later down the line.
Klarna's buy now, pay later, or BNPL, service allows users to spread the cost of their purchases over a period of interest-free installments. The service is mostly associated with online shopping, which currently accounts for about 5% of the global e-commerce market, according to Klarna.
Targeting consumers in-store has become an increasingly important priority as Klarna and other firms in the sector such as Block's Afterpay, Affirm, Zip, Sezzle, and Zilch seek to expand their reach.
The move expands on a previous arrangement Klarna had in place with Adyen on e-commerce payments.
"We want consumers to be able to pay with Klarna at any checkout, anywhere," David Sykes, chief commercial officer at Klarna, said in a statement Thursday.
"Our strong partnership with Adyen gives a massive boost to our ambition to bring flexible payments to the high street in a new way."
Adyen's head of EMEA, Alexa von Bismarck, said the deal was about giving consumers flexibility at checkout, adding that "consumers care deeply about the in-store touch point and value brands which can allow them to pay how they want."
FTC Announces Crackdown on Deceptive AI claims and Schemes
8 min. readView original
The Federal tradecommission is taking action against multiple companies that have relied on artificial intelligence as a way to supercharge deceptive or unfair conduct that harms consumers, as part of its new law enforcement sweep called Operation AI Comply.
The cases being announced today include actions against a company promoting an AI tool that enabled its customers to create fake reviews, a company claiming to sell “AI Lawyer” services, and multiple companies claiming that they could use AI to help consumers make money through online storefronts.
“Using AI tools to trick, mislead, or defraud people is illegal,” said FTC Chair Lina M. Khan. “The FTC’s enforcement actions make clear that there is no AI exemption from the laws on the books. By cracking down on unfair or deceptive practices in these markets, FTC is ensuring that honest businesses and innovators can get a fair shot and consumers are being protected.”
Claims around artificial intelligence have become more prevalent in the marketplace, including frequent promises about the ways it could potentially enhance people’s lives through automation and problem solving. The cases included in this sweep show that firms have seized on the hype surrounding AI and are using it to lure consumers into bogus schemes, and are also providing AI powered tools that can turbocharge deception.
The FTC is taking action against DoNotPay, a company that claimed to offer an AI service that was “the world’s first robot lawyer,” but the product failed to live up to its lofty claims that the service could substitute for the expertise of a human lawyer.
According to the FTC’s complaint, DoNotPay promised that its service would allow consumers to “sue for assault without a lawyer” and “generate perfectly valid legal documents in no time,” and that the company would “replace the $200-billion-dollar legal industry with artificial intelligence.” DoNotPay, however, could not deliver on these promises. The complaint alleges that the company did not conduct testing to determine whether its AI chatbot’s output was equal to the level of a human lawyer, and that the company itself did not hire or retain any attorneys.
The complaint also alleges that DoNotPay offered a service that would check a small business website for hundreds of federal and state law violations based solely on the consumer’s emailaddress. This feature purportedly would detect legal violations that, if unaddressed, would potentially cost a small business $125,000 in legal fees, but according to the complaint, this service was also not effective.
DoNotPay has agreed to a proposed Commission order settling the charges against it. The settlement would require it to pay $193,000, provide a notice to consumers who subscribed to the service between 2021 and 2023 warning them about the limitations of law-related features on the service. The proposed order also will prohibit the company from making claims about its ability to substitute for any professional service without evidence to back it up.
The Commission vote authorizing the staff to issue the complaint and proposed administrative order was 5-0. Commissioner Holyoak issued a concurring statement joined by Chair Lina M. Khan. Commissioner Ferguson also issued a concurring statement. The FTC will publish a description of the consent agreement package in the Federal Register soon. The agreement will be subject to public comment for 30 days, after which the Commission will decide whether to make the proposed consent order final. Instructions for filing comments appear in the published notice. Once processed, comments will be posted on regulations.gov.
The FTC has filed a lawsuit against an online business opportunity scheme that it alleges has falsely claimed its “cutting edge” AI-powered tools would help consumers quickly earn thousands of dollars a month in passive income by opening online storefronts. According to the complaint, the scheme has defrauded consumers of at least $25 million.
The scheme is run by William Basta and Kenneth Leung, and it has operated under a number of different names since 2021, including Ascend Ecom, Ascend Ecommerce, Ascend CapVentures, ACV Partners, ACV, Accelerated eCom Ventures, Ethix capital by Ascend, and ACV Nexus.
According to the FTC’s complaint, the operators of the scheme charge consumers tens of thousands of dollars to start online stores on ecommerce platforms such as Amazon, Walmart, Etsy, and TikTok, while also requiring them to spend tens of thousands more on inventory. Ascend’s advertising content claimed the company was a leader in ecommerce, using proprietary software and artificial intelligence to maximize clients’ business success.
The complaint notes that, while Ascend promises consumers it will create stores producing five-figure monthly income by the second year, for nearly aLL consumers, the promised gains never materialize, and consumers are left with depleted bankaccounts and hefty credit card bills. The complaint alleges that Ascend received numerous complaints from consumers, pressured consumers to modify or delete negative reviews of Ascend, frequently failed to honor their “guaranteed buyback,” and unlawfully threatened to withhold the supposed “guaranteed buyback” for those who left negative reviews of the company online.
As a result of the FTC’s complaint, a federal court issued an order temporarily halting the scheme and putting it under the control of a receiver. The FTC’s case against the scheme is ongoing and will be decided by a federal court.
The Commission vote authorizing the staff to file the complaint was 5-0. The complaint was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.
The FTC has charged a business opportunity scheme with falsely claiming to help consumers build an “AI-powered Ecommerce Empire” by participating in its training programs that can cost almost $2,000 or by buying a “done for you” online storefront for tens of thousands of dollars. The scheme, known as Ecommerce Empire Builders (EEB), claims consumers can potentially make millions of dollars, but the FTC’s complaint alleges that those profits fail to materialize.
The complaint alleges that EEB’s CEO, Peter Prusinowski, has used consumers’ money – as much as $35,000 from consumers who purchase stores – to enrich himself while failing to deliver on the scheme’s promises of big income by selling goods online. In its marketing, EEB encourages consumers to “Skip the guesswork and start a million-dollar business today” by harnessing the “power of artificial intelligence” and the scheme’s supposed strategies.
In social media ads, EEB claims that its clients can make $10,000 monthly, but the FTC’s complaint alleges that the company has no evidence to back up those claims. Numerous consumers have complained that stores they purchased from EEB made little or no money, and that the company has resisted providing refunds to consumers, either denying refunds or only providing partial refunds.
As a result of the FTC’s complaint, a federal court issued an order temporarily halting the scheme and putting it under the control of a receiver. The FTC’s case against the scheme is ongoing and will be decided by a federal court.
The Commission vote authorizing the staff to file the complaint against Prusinowski and his company was 5-0. The complaint was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
Since April 2021, Rytr has marketed and sold an AI “writing assistant” service for a number of uses, one of which was specifically “Testimonial & Review” generation. Paid subscribers could generate an unlimited number of detailed consumer reviews based on very limited and generic input.
According to the FTC’s complaint, Rytr’s service generated detailed reviews that contained specific, often material details that had no relation to the user’s input, and these reviews almost certainly would be false for the users who copied them and published them online. In many cases, subscribers’ AI-generated reviews featured information that would deceive potential consumers who were using the reviews to make purchasing decisions. The complaint further alleges that at least some of Rytr’s subscribers used the service to produce hundreds, and in some cases tens of thousands, of reviews potentially containing false information.
The complaint charges Rytr with violating the FTC Act by providing subscribers with the means to generate false and deceptive written content for consumer reviews. The complaint also alleges that Rytr engaged in an unfair business practice by offering a service that is likely to pollute the marketplace with a glut of fake reviews that would harm both consumers and honest competitors.
The proposed order settling the Commission’s complaint is designed to prevent Rytr from engaging in similar illegal conduct in the future. It would bar the company from advertising, promoting, marketing, or selling any service dedicated to – or promoted as – generating consumer reviews or testimonials.
The Commission vote authorizing the staff to issue the complaint and proposed administrative order was 3-2, with Commissioners Melissa Holyoak and Andrew Ferguson voting no. Commissioners Holyoak and Ferguson issued statements.
In June, the FTC took action against a business opportunity scheme that allegedly falsely promised consumers that they would make guaranteed income through online storefronts that utilized AI-powered software. According to the FTC, the scheme, which has operated under the names Passive Scaling and FBA Machine, cost consumers more than $15.9 million based on deceptive earnings claims that rarely, if ever, materialize.
The complaint alleges that Bratislav Rozenfeld (also known as Steven Rozenfeld and Steven Rozen) has operated the scheme since 2021, initially as Passive Scaling. When Passive Scaling failed to live up to its promises and consumers sought refunds and brought lawsuits, Rozenfeld rebranded the scheme as FBA Machine in 2023. The rebranded marketing materials claim that FBA Machine uses “AI-powered” tools to help price products in the stores and maximize profits.
The scheme’s claims were wide-ranging, promising consumers that they could operate a “7-figure business” and citing supposed testimonials from clients who “generate over $100,000 per month in profit.” Company sales agents told consumers that the business was “risk-free” and falsely guaranteed refunds to consumers who did not make back their initial investments, which ranged from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars.
As a result of the FTC’s complaint, a federal court issued an order temporarily halting the scheme and putting it under the control of a receiver. The case against the scheme is still under way and will be decided by a federal court.
The Commission vote authorizing the staff to file the complaint against Rozenfeld and a number of companies involved in the scheme was 5-0. The complaint was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey.
The Operation AI Comply cases being announced today build on a number of recent FTC cases involving claims about artificial intelligence, including: Automators, another online storefront scheme; Career Step, a company that allegedly used AI technology to convince consumers to enroll in bogus career training; NGL Labs, a company that allegedly claimed to use AI to provide moderation in an anonymous messaging app it unlawfully marketed to children; Rite Aid, which allegedly used AI facial recognition technology in its stores without reasonable safeguards; and CRI Genetics, a company that allegedly deceived users about the accuracy of its DNA reports, including claims it used an AI algorithm to conduct genetic matching.
A surge in demand for AI semiconductors and AI-enabled smartphones and laptops could lead to the next global chip shortage, according to Bain & Company.
A surge in demand for artificial intelligence-focused semiconductors and AI-enabled smartphones and laptops could lead to the next global chip shortage, according to a report released Wednesday by consultancy Bain & Co.
Dont kid yourself. Bitcoin has a valuable role to play. I am far from a maxi but I can see, especially with how things are going, the importance of having the Bitcoin network.
I think Bitcoin is great, but I also think more energy than necessary is being wasted on mining. It's not as bad as I made it seem. I just think this compute power spent on AI is better than crypto mining.
The last major semiconductor shortage happened during the Covid-19 pandemic amid supply chain disruption and a rise in demand for consumer electronics as people were forced to stay and work at home.
Technology giants have been snapping up graphics processing units, or GPUs, mainly from Nvidia. These GPUs which are housed in data centers are critical for the training of huge AI models which underpin applications like OpenAI's ChatGPT.
Meanwhile, companies like Qualcomm are designing chips that go into smartphones and personal computers and allow those devices to run AI applications locally rather than via an internet connection in the cloud. These are often referred to as AI-enabled devices and companies from Samsung to Microsoft have released such products.
Bain said demand for GPUs and AI consumer electronics could be the cause of a chip shortage.
"Surging demand for graphics processing units (GPUs) has caused shortages in specific elements of the semiconductor value chain," Anne Hoecker, head of the technology practice in the Americas at Bain, told CNBC by email.
"If we combine the growth in demand for GPUs alongside a wave of AI-enabled devices, which could accelerate PC product refresh cycles, there could be more widespread constraints on semiconductor supply."
However, it's unclear at this point how much demand such AI-enabled gadgets will have, given what appears to be a cautious approach to them from consumers so far.
Bain noted that the semiconductor supply chain is "incredibly complex, and a demand increase of about 20% or more has a high likelihood of upsetting the equilibrium and causing a chip shortage."
"The AI explosion across the confluence of the large end markets could easily surpass that threshold, creating vulnerable chokepoints throughout the supply chain," the report added.
Not sure if I'll add more later, but I added most of my Conversations with ChatGPT already during the past two weeks. If you want my this threadcast to appear on top today, add your conversations guys:
According to Reuters, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is poised to receive equity for the first time as the company plots a transition to a for-profit entity.
Following the abrupt departure of OpenAI’s CTO, Mira Murati, CEO Sam Altman is reportedly poised to receive equity in the company for the first time as OpenAI moves away from its longstanding nonprofit structure.
Reuters, citing people familiar with the matter, reports that OpenAI plans to restructure into a for-profit benefit corporation — similar to rivals such as Anthropic and Elon Musk’s xAI. The nonprofit OpenAI board, which currently oversees OpenAI’s for-profit operations, will relinquish control but retain a minority stake in the new for-profit OpenAI entity.
The transition is intended to make OpenAI more attractive to outside investors, who’ve chafed at the company’s current cap on returns. But it’s likely to raise concerns from the AI safety community about whether OpenAI can hold itself accountable in its pursuit of superintelligent AI.

Meta had previously noted that there are more than 400 million monthly users across the world.
Mark Zuckerberg said Wednesday during Meta Connect 2024 that Meta AI is one of the most used AI assistant across the world with “almost” 500 million monthly active users. Zuckerberg said that Meta AI is on track to become the most used assistant across the world.
“We’re almost at 500 million monthly activities, and we haven’t even launched in some of the bigger countries yet,” Zuckerberg said at the event, pointing out that it hasn’t launched in the EU yet.
Meta had previously noted that there are more than 400 million monthly users across the world. The company’s CFO, Susan Li, said during the Q2 2024 call that India is Meta AI’s biggest market, largely thanks to WhatsApp, which has more than 500 million users in the country.
In comparison, OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot has more than 200 million weekly users.
Meta today announced a new family of models called Llama 3.2 with new multimodal capabilities. The company is also launching Llama 3.2 1B and 3B lightweight models — models that weren’t trained on European user data — in Europe.
Soon, your glasses will be able to translate speech in real time. When you’re talking to someone speaking Spanish, French, or Italian, you’ll hear what they say in English through the glasses’ open-ear speakers. Not only is this great for traveling, it should help break down language barriers and bring people closer together. We plan to add support for more languages in the future to make this feature even more useful.
The companies have yet to announce a timeline for this specific AI addition, but depending on implementation, it could be a tremendously useful addition to the livestreaming glasses.
Live translation has been a kind of holy grail for established hardware firm and startups alike. Google, notably, introduced a pair of concept glasses with a heads-up display capable of translating in real time. That, however, never made it past the prototype stage.
Meta has yet to announce the languages that will initially be available.
During Wednesday’s Meta Connect event, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced a slew of new AI-fueled features for the company’s Ray-Ban collaboration. The most interesting of the bunch is the addition of real-time translation through the glasses’ speakers.
During Tan’s opening remarks during Wednesday’s YC summer cohort Demo Day, he said this week’s Demo Day presentations will, “knock on wood,” be the final ones held entirely online. Tan added that the accelerator’s first fall cohort Demo Day, which will take place on December 4, will include an in-person element.
Demo Days are like the graduation events for startups that complete its program, where they pitch their products to investors and others in the tech ecosystem. Tan said that in-person seats will be limited and reserved for decision-making investors who have invested at least $50,000 into YC companies within the last two years.
“Think about it this way, you all now have four must-be-at events per year in San Francisco where you can catch up with friends and see the future all at the same time,” Tan said of the planned in-person event to the VCs watching online.
This switch back to in-person Demo Days is a logical move. While both the accelerator program and its Demo Days went to an online, virtual format in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the program itself returned to being an in-person event and has been so for two years now. Meanwhile, YC has been an instrumental part of encouraging more startups to locate themselves in the Bay Area generally, and San Francisco in particular. In addition to its accelerator program, it throws numerous other in-person events for its alumni and the startup community.
Y Combinator recently expanded the number of startup cohorts each year from two to four, adding both a fall and spring batch. The first fall cohort kicks off on September 29. YC’s first spring program will launch in 2025.

Today's announcement is PayPal's latest step to increase cryptocurrency's utility by making increased functionality available to millions of merchants in the U.S.
In what is a key part of the payment service juggernauts’ crypto venture, Visa is set to help banks test tokenized assets and smart contracts. Indeed, the firm has created a brand new platform in order to help the development and testing of fiat-backed tokens.
The new tokenized asset sandbox has already been used by Spain’s Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Artentaria. Moreover, Visa notes that its assistance should help continue to evolve how global banks interact in an evolving financial world. It is just one of the many ways that the payment firm has continued to embrace the digital asset sector.

At Meta’s Connect developer conference, CEO Mark Zuckerberg showed off Orion, a futuristic pair of smart glasses that the company hopes will lead the next foundational shift in personal computing.
To call this holographic display concept “new” isn’t totally accurate. Snap has similarly used projector and waveguide technology in its Snap spectacles. The heavily hyped mixed-reality company Magic Leap also attempted to pioneer waveguide technology. Even small startups like North, which couldn’t sustain itself and was eventually sold for parts to Google, have attempted to build their own custom projector and waveguide technology into stylish glasses.
Meta spokesperson Bryan Pope said in an email to WIRED that the display in Orion is “unlike any other AR glasses product attempted to date as far as we know.” Pope said the lenses are made from silicon carbide, not glass, which has a “high refractive index” and contributes to Orion's relatively wide field-of-view (along with its intricate waveguide technology.) The projectors in Orion also use newer, uLED technology, which is supposed to be more power-efficient.
Researchers found a flaw in a Kia web portal that let them track millions of cars, unlock doors, and start engines at will—the latest in a plague of web bugs that’s affected a dozen carmakers.
When security researchers in the past found ways to hijack vehicles' internet-connected systems, their proof-of-concept demonstrations tended to show, thankfully, that hacking cars is hard. Exploits like the ones that hackers used to remotely take over a Chevrolet Impala in 2010 or a Jeep in 2015 took years of work to develop and required ingenious tricks: reverse engineering the obscure code in the cars’ telematics units, delivering malicious software to those systems via audio tones played over radio connections, or even putting a disc with a malware-laced music file into the car’s CD drive.
This summer, one small group of hackers demonstrated a technique to hack and track millions of vehicles that’s considerably easier—as easy as finding a simple bug in a website.
Today, a group of independent security researchers revealed that they'd found a flaw in a web portal operated by the carmaker Kia that let the researchers reassign control of the internet-connected features of most modern Kia vehicles—dozens of models representing millions of cars on the road—from the smartphone of a car’s owner to the hackers’ own phone or computer. By exploiting that vulnerability and building their own custom app to send commands to target cars, they were able to scan virtually any internet-connected Kia vehicle’s license plate and within seconds gain the ability to track that car’s location, unlock the car, honk its horn, or start its ignition at will.
Airbnb (NASDAQ:ABNB) has long been recognized as one of the tourism industry’s most disruptive forces, but are customers finally beginning to turn their backs on the company’s convoluted pricing structures?
When announcing its second-quarter earnings, Airbnb pointed to weakening demand among US customers as a leading cause behind a sales slowdown on the platform.
To compound the homestay marketplace’s troubles, residents in Hungary’s capital city Budapest recently voted to ban firms like Airbnb to stop the impact that short-term rentals are having on local housing shortages.
Should more global cities follow Budapest’s lead, Airbnb could lose significant ground on traditional hotels in offering competitively priced stays throughout a number of popular holiday destinations.
Moving into September 2024, Airbnb’s year-to-date performance had fallen 14.5%. In an ominous sign, Airbnb CEO and chairman Brian Chesky sold $27.7 million worth of shares in a pre-arranged trade in September.
With Airbnb’s challenges mounting, the stock has arrived at a crossroads in determining its longevity. Could we see how the innovative marketplace overcomes its problems? Or is the stock’s status as the tourism industry’s biggest disruptor over?
Everything is digital these days, and that, of course, includes our money. It’s less and less typical worldwide to pay with physical cash or coins, instead preferring some kind of virtual transaction. It’s just more practical, even safer if we think about physical assaults. On the other hand, not all electronic money works the same or offers the same features.
We need to have this in mind for the sake of our financial privacy and autonomy: electronic money isn’t the same as cryptocurrencies. Instead, we can say that cryptos are barely a type of electronic money, which is more of a category than a single thing. Electronic money or e-money refers to digital forms of currency used for online transactions and stored in electronic devices or systems, such as bank accounts, computers, or digital wallets. The category encompasses various forms, including cryptocurrencies, transfers with digital fiat (national) currencies, Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs), and e-money services, each with different underlying technologies, issuers, regulations, and use cases.
An important factor to distinguish among these types is the centralization (or not) of these systems. This way, the e-money can be centralized, like fiat currencies and CBDCs, where a central authority (e.g., a government or bank) controls issuance and regulation; or decentralized, like cryptocurrencies, where a distributed network manages transactions and governance without central oversight.
David Chaum, a renowned cryptographer and cypherpunk, is considered the inventor of electronic cash. In 1983, he published the paper "Blind Signatures for Untraceable Payments", which would later be used to build the first-ever e-money system available for public use: Ecash. The company Digicash handled this type of anonymous electronic money until its bankruptcy in 1998 —but that would only be the beginning.
Other exponents would join over the years. From 1996 to 2009, e-gold, a gold-based digitalcurrency, amassed millions of users before being shut down by the U.S. government. By 1997, Coca-Cola introduced mobilepayments for vending machines, and PayPal began offering its USD-based service in 1998. aLL of the above were fully dependent on banks and governments, though. money still came from the same ultimate source: a national central bank.
In other words, there are no companies or closed groups behind their control, but only a global network of computers controlled by their owners. This setup ensures that no single entity has control over the currency, making it more resistant to censorship and manipulation.
This Wednesday (25), during Meta Connect 2024, the controller of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Threads announced its main bets for next year. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Big Tech, began the afternoon presentations with a message: “It’s been a busy year, but we can finally envision the future of human connection.”
The most interesting new feature presented by the company was the integration of artificial intelligence into Ray-Ban Meta glasses. With AI, the device will function as an “extension of the brain”. You can use it as a secondary memory, which will remind you where your car is parked or the number of an advertisement you saw while walking.
According to Meta, the glasses will soon also feature translation capabilities and real-time video support. “Say, for example, you are exploring a new city. Just ask Meta AI to accompany you and chat with it to ask about the landmarks you see,” the statement says.
Billionaire Mark Zuckerberg's company presented a new prototype of augmented reality glasses, called Orion. The product, which was tested by a few selected experts, is not available to the public, but promises to revolutionize the next steps in augmented reality.
“The Orion has been in production for 10 years. The requirements were simple: they needed to be glasses weighing less than 100 grams and without wires. He needed wide-field-of-view displays to accommodate multiple multitasking screens or a movie theater-sized screen. And it needed to allow you to see the physical world around you. Orion meets all these requirements. It's a feat of miniaturization with 10 custom silicon chips and a completely new display architecture,” explained Zuckerberg.
The Meta Quest 3S, Meta's new mixed reality headset, is available for pre-order in the United States for a starting price of US$299.99. The device is powered by the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 platform, developed in partnership with Qualcomm Technologies, and includes hand tracking, Touch Plus controllers and a wide range of experiences on Meta Horizon OS.
Since traditional currencies are issued and regulated by a government, they play by the rules of that government at every step —no matter if they’re physical or digital.
Systems like PayPal or Venmo, and of course, banks and digital wallets that work with a certain national currency (USD, EUR, etc.) are obligated to follow a whole set of rules and limitations, and are free to add their own. Real privacy and control for users are almost nonexistent this way.
One major advantage of cryptocurrencies over traditional fiat e-money is, indeed, the level of privacy and control they offer to users. transactions can be made pseudonymously, providing greater privacy compared to traditional banking systems, where personal information is often required and tracked.
Additionally, users have greater (or full, depending on the underlyingtechnology — see below) control over their funds, as they holdprivate keys to their digital wallets, unlike fiat money which is stored and controlled by corporations that can freeze it or restrict the user’s freedom to use their money.
Cryptocurrencies also offer flexibility in terms of accessibility and usage. They can be sent and received globally without the need for intermediaries, often with lower fees and faster transaction times compared to traditional cross-border payments. This makes them particularly useful for people in regions with limited access to banking services, or for those who value independence from traditional financial systems.\
While cryptocurrencies are designed to be decentralized, they can still be susceptible to manipulation or censorship, especially in networks where there are middlemen before a final transaction approval. miners and “validators”, for instance, could potentially collude to influence the network, such as blocking certain transactions or favoring others, thus undermining the system's integrity.
The Federal TradeCommission announced today that the consumer protection agencies of Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, and Panama have joined an existing agreement that the FTC reached in 2023 with the consumer protection authorities of Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru to promote cooperation among the agencies to protect consumers from cross-border fraud, deception, and other illegal practices.
The 2023 Multilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MMOU) provides a framework and mechanism for information-sharing, investigative assistance, and other types of cooperation on consumer protection enforcement. The addition of agencies from Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, and Panama expands the reach of the MMOU and sends a wider message of the agencies’ shared commitment to protect consumers from unlawful practices.
Today’s announcement coincides with a three-day conference and meeting of the International Consumer Protection and Enforcement network (ICPEN) in Washington, D.C. The FTC took over the presidency of ICPEN in July and is gathering more than 250 representatives of consumer protection authorities and organizations from the United States and around the world to discuss important issues that consumers are facing in today’s expanding digital age, including challenges related to online gaming and artificial intelligence, and to exchange good practices for international enforcement cooperation.
At the meeting, ICPEN also unveiled a revamped version of its econsumer.gov website, including an updated complaint form, a more mobile friendly format for consumers to report international scams, and updated guidance on additional steps that consumers can take to resolve their complaints.
The lead staffer on this matter is Angel Martinez from the FTC’s Office of International Affairs.
The Federal Trade Commission works with counterpart agencies to promote sound antitrust, consumer protection, and dataprivacy enforcement and policy. The FTC will never demand money, make threats, tell you to transfer money, or promise you a prize. A newly released data spotlight shows that consumers in 2023 submitted about 52,000 reports about scammers impersonating Best buy or its Geek Squad tech support brand, followed by about 34,000 reports about scammers impersonating Amazon. PayPal was the third-most impersonated company with about 10,000 reports from consumers.
When it comes to the amount lost, though, consumers reported losing far more money to scammers impersonating Microsoft and Publishers clearing house than any other companies. Consumers reported losing a total of $60 million to Microsoft impersonation scams and $49 million to Publishers clearing House impersonation scams.
The FTC recently finalized its new rule on government and business impersonation, which gives the agency stronger tools to combat and deter scammers who impersonate government agencies and businesses, enabling the FTC to file federal court cases seeking to get money back to injured consumers and civil penalties against rule violators.
The spotlight also outlines the most common forms of payment people reported scammers used to steal money in 2023. When ChatGPT launched in November 2022, companyexecutives scrambled to figure out how to use generative AI systems to make their businesses run more efficiently. nOW, after what seems like a marathon of flashy demos and announcements, they’re eager to cut through the hype and roll out tools that actually trim costs and offer a real return on investment.
Bhavin Shah, CEO and cofounder of conversational AI platform Moveworks claims that his company helps enterprises do just that. Moveworks’ AI tool automatically completes monotonous tasks like troubleshooting IT issues and submitting PTO requests and helps employees quickly search through company documents like contracts, files, workplace policies and calendars. In doing so, Shah claims the company has helped enterprises save millions of dollars by freeing up teams who can devote less time to fielding answers to basic questions and work on more important projects.
By automating the more mundane parts of HR and IT jobs, the company is seeing a scale of revenue growth that is rare among some of the most high profile generative AI startups today. Moveworks announced Tuesday that it has crossed $100 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR), a calculation of revenue for the next 12 months based on current monthly subscriptions and contracts.
Moveworks’ revenue success comes as buzzy AI companies amass towering valuations while revenues remain fairly dwarfed in comparison. Large language model builder Cohere, valued at $5.5 billion, was generating $35 million in ARR as of July 2024, The Information reported. Enterprise AI search tool Hebbia, which is valued at $700 million, was making $13 million in ARR as of July, according to Techcrunch.
Meanwhile, Moveworks, a fairly lesser-known name in the AI space, is used by some 5 million employees at over 350 companies like Hearst, GitHub, Toyota and Salesforce. Their employees ask the chatbot questions like “How much can I spend if I take the team out for dinner?” and “If I have enough vacation time, can you book the week after Thanksgiving for me?” The AI system, which lives in Slack or Teams, connects with external tools like Workday, ServiceNow, ADP and Microsoft, so that employees can scrounge for information that’s stored across different applications.
Founded in 2016, Moveworks is valued at $2.1 billion and has more than $300 million in venture capital from marquee backers like Lightspeed Venture Partners, Bain capital Ventures and Kleiner Perkins. The company got its start by building a tool that automatically completed everyday tech support chores like resetting passwords, ordering a new laptop or providing access to programs or folders. Initially, Moveworks used statistical machine learning models for its chatbot and was one of the first companies to incorporate Google’s BERT model, a natural language processing model based on transformers, the technological breakthrough that birthed generative AI tools like ChatGPT.
But post-ChatGPT, company executives started realizing that their employee service chatbots felt “ancient” in comparison, Shah said. Arif Janmohamed, partner at Lightspeed Venture Partners who led Moveworks seed round in 2016, said the launch of ChatGPT was a “wake up call for aLL enterprises across the world.”
The explosion of generative AI sparked new momentum for Moveworks, doubling the company’s customer base in the past 18 months, Shah said. The software is NOW built on “dozens” of large language models like OpenAI’s GPT-4o, Meta’s Llama 3.1 as well as its own model, “MoveLM.” It’s trained on AI-generated “synthetic datasets” built from 14 million employee-chatbot conversations, 500 million support tickets and 400,000 web pages with enterprise-related information like how-tos and frequently asked questions — all of which were anonymized and annotated before being ingested by an AI model.
As companies pile into the space, Moveworks now competes with a burgeoning slate of rivals that include $4.6 billion enterprise AI search tool Glean and writer, which is valued between $500 million and $700 million and is building a full-stack generative AI platform for enterprises. Giants like Salesforce and Microsoft have also launched their own AI agents for automating tasks like identifying leads and writing code.
Shah says there’s a challenge in building a system that understands the unique characteristics of each enterprise. For instance, the tool should be able to detect the consonant-filled acronyms commonly used by defense contractors, and not get confused and think it’s someone “jamming on the keyboard.” It should also be able to appropriately respond to prompts like “where's Michael Jackson?”, recognizing that Michael Jackson is probably the name of a conference room and not a person.
“AI companies who haven't reached scale are yet to find out that it won't work unless you actually tackle all of these gritty, ugly, messy problems because that's actually what makes the world work,” he said.
Cellino, cofounded by 30 Under 30 alumni, got a $25 million grant to develop self-contained biomanufacturing units for stem cells that treat degenerative diseases.
For decades, researchers have sought to harness the potential of stem cells to treat debilitating diseases such as Parkinson's and Type 1 diabetes. However, the high cost of creating induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) has hindered progress. Biotech startup Cellino is poised to change this landscape with its innovative technology, Nebula, which promises to reduce manufacturing costs by at least 10 times.
iPSCs are created by reprogramming adult cells to behave like embryonic stem cells, allowing them to transform into any cell type. This potential has sparked hope for treating degenerative diseases. However, the current process of creating useful tissues from iPSCs is labor-intensive and expensive, costing hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars per patient.
Founded in 2017, Cellino has developed self-contained units called cassettes, likened to "Nespresso pods," which can grow personalized cell treatments on-site at hospitals. This technology has garnered significant attention, including a $25 million grant from the federal government's Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) and $96 million in venture capital funding.
Cellino's automated system utilizes computer vision to monitor cell growth and lasers to eliminate unhealthy cells. This approach enables mass production of iPSCs, making personalized treatments more accessible. The company plans to use its recent funding to develop a more compact version of its technology, ideal for widespread hospital use.
Susan Hockfield, former MIT president and neuroscience professor, praises Cellino's innovative approach, citing its ability to "industrialize the production of cells." Alex Morgan, partner at Khosla Ventures, highlights Cellino's multidisciplinary team as a key advantage, making it difficult for competitors to replicate.
Cellino's CEO, Nabiha Saklayen, envisions a future where personalized iPSCs are available to patients everywhere. With its groundbreaking technology and significant funding, Cellino is poised to revolutionize disease treatment, making hope a reality for millions.

As NASA's Artemis II mission — which will send four astronauts to circumnavigate the Moon next year — approaches, a new study reveals how well the Orion spacecraft will protect the crew. To do this, dummies flew around the Moon in a mission that astronauts will soon be able to follow. Scientists have also just revealed what the models' trip was like.
The findings are based on data from Artemis I, a 25-day trip that took place around the Moon and back to Earth in late 2022. On that mission, the Orion capsule, which followed a similar trajectory to that predicted for Artemis II , was unmanned but carried special non-human guests.
Two of these guests, torsos of mannequins named Helga and Zohar, were used to test how much radiation astronauts might face when venturing to the Moon. The models were made from materials that mimic a person's soft tissues, organs and bones and, as the spacecraft, included detectors to monitor radiation exposure along the way.
Now, scientists have released the first results after studying data from the detectors, published on Wednesday (18), in the journal Nature. The findings show that the shielding technology used on the ship was effective in mitigating radiation during the journey.
“The Artemis I mission marks a crucial step in advancing our understanding of how space radiation affects the safety of future manned missions to the Moon,” said Sergi Vaquer Araujo, space medicine team leader at the European Space Agency, in a statement.
Araujo did not participate in the study, but the European Space Agency contributed five mobile dosimeters to measure radiation throughout the Orion spacecraft.
“We are gaining valuable insights into how space radiation interacts with spacecraft protection, the types of radiation that penetrate the human body, and which areas within Orion offer the most protection,” Araujo added.
NASA has been studying the impact of space radiation on human health for decades, dating back to the first manned missions in the 1960s. Data is also regularly collected from astronauts who spend six months to a year aboard the International Space Station.
The station remains in low Earth orbit, meaning it is partially shielded by the planet's magnetic field in addition to the heavy shielding built into the space lab's design. Earth's magnetic field also prevents cosmic rays from reaching astronauts.
Sensors embedded in the Orion capsule captured continuous radiation data on the journey from Earth to the Moon and back for the first time, researchers said. Although there is some data from the Apollo missions, it was not collected continuously.
State standards are what regulate the quality of manufactured products, and technical conditions are what allow you to bypass state standards and reduce quality, as, for example, in the production of polyethylene pipes :) !BEER

Hi guys! For say 3 weeks in Brazil in December/January, how much money would a couple need? We'd like to stop by Brasília, which is a posh place I guess, and Belém. Putting cost of accomodation and the flights aside, would you say $1,000 is fine?
Hey man! Yea if you are not including accommodation and the flights in that, it should be fine... perhaps a little more depending on how much you guys decide to drive around while visiting these places but not much more
Great! Thanks :) Car rentals are quite cheap there, but we could also take some domestic flights - they cost a bargain.
Yes, indeed! Just be aware of traffic. I don't know where you live but it can get pretty crazy around these parts haha

Here is a question I have been thinking about lately.
Should the government regulate social media platforms to prevent misinformation, or does that infringe on free speech?
Elon musk's saga in Brazil sparked this thought.
#cent #askonleo #askleo
Infrings on free speech.
So what would be the best way to control misinformation?
There is not. People have to learn to inform themselves. Governments act like they are parents and we common folk are all children.
Time for people to educate themselves on stuff.
Thats a pretty thoughtful response. Thanks Bradley.

Decentralize positively when it does not hurt the system because of corner cases is the dream... #hive is very very close to that venture! If not over that already in some places!
what do you mean by corner cases?
government should have no control of social media platforms
Fair enough. I guess the only solution will be for everyone to cross check what they are consuming.
We can't trust them how they will regulate it. They will cause more harm the moment they step in. It is like giving them the power and authority in your space. Rather, I think they should investigate bloggers who disseminate false information and deal with them.
You made another solid point. That's two in a day, I'm giving you a follow.

I Asked ChatGPT: What does "Cardio" mean?

Expanded Response in Comments!

I'd rather watch any sporting event than any of those reality shows. And I don't even really like watching sporting events either.
That makes the two of us.
I used to like it but now, nope
Are you talking about sports or reality shows or both?

I think Lions worried about “dust votes” is hurting the InLEO feed…especially since we’re in the middle of an onboarding initiative. The cosmetic effect of new users seeing more upvotes on the feed is exponentially more valuable than the half a penny you won’t receive from curation.
Spread those upvotes around…doesn’t matter if u have 50 LEO or 5000! We are collectively programmed to value the “thumbs up”, so while comments definitely matter organically…upvotes matter a lot more today.
That's a good point you brought up.
Appreciate it! I’m drafting up a long form post on the subject in hopes it doesn’t fall on deaf ears
give me a ping when you're done.

I agree, it also shows that there is actually some action on the site from real ppl :)
Indeed…right now appearance is everything.
Yes, we want this place to be alive!
You are making a very relevant statement here. We should become use to up voting no matter how little, thanks
Thanks. Yea once we get to like 10k MAUs I think it’ll take care of itself but we need it for the look
#HMSTR will be listed in about 2 hours, how high do you think its price can reach in the first 10 minutes?
It will start with a nice peak and then drop like most tokens do when people start to sell.

This on the day it was announced that OpenAI is going to be for profit and give Altman a huge stake.
Makes you wonder what is happening there.
AI Safety Is A Global Public Good
The advent of ever more powerful artificial intelligences today in the context of geopolitical rivalry between the U.S.-led West and China has prompted the organization of a similarly urgent exchange across divides called the International Dialogues on AI Safety, organized by the Safe AI Forum.
This is overblown.
It seems, the further we go, the less of a threat AI is. The fearmongering about it being the end is overblown. There is no reason to fear AI, at least large language models.
We are creating artificial knowledge, not artificial intelligence.
Yea. Probably some people trying to stop the competitiontion so they can catch up
They want regulatory capture. Sam Altman is big on this. If he can get open source removed, it is to the advantage of OpenAI.

NASA and SpaceX postpone astronaut rescue mission due to storm
NASA, the American space agency, and SpaceX, rocket manufacturer owned by tycoon Elon Musk, postponed until Saturday, the 28th, the launch of the Crew-9 mission due to a tropical storm that will hit Cape Canaveral, in Florida (USA) , the place from where the spacecraft would take off.
#newsonleo #space #spacex #technology

OpenAI considering restructuring to for-profit, CTO Mira Murati and two top research execs depart
#openai #technology #newsonleo #samaltman

OpenAI's chief research officer has left following CTO Mira Murati's exit
OpenAI's chief research officer has left the company, along with a VP of research.
OpenAI’s chief research officer, Bob McGrew, and a research VP, Barret Zoph, left the company on Wednesday, hours after OpenAI CTO Mira Murati announced she would be departing.
#newsonleo #openai #technology
CEO Sam Altman revealed the two latest resignations in a post on X Wednesday evening, along with leadership transition plans.
“Mira, Bob, and Barret made these decisions independently of each other and amicably,” he said, “but the timing of Mira’s decision was such that it made sense to now do this all at once, so that we can work together for a smooth handover to the next generation of leadership.”
VP of research Mark Chen is being promoted to OpenAI’s new SVP of research, and will lead the company’s research org in partnership with Jakub Pachocki as chief scientist, Altman said.

Meta Connect 2024: Orion glasses, Quest 3S headset, Meta AI upgrades, Ray-Ban Meta real-time video, and more
Meta Connect 2024 is a developer-centric event featuring a keynote from CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
#technology #metaconnect #meta #newsonleo
Quest 2, Quest Pro discontinued

Zuckerberg chats with AI clone as human creator looks on in year’s weirdest demo
The demo showcased AI Studio, a platform for designing custom chatbots.
AI has already given us some weird demos. And friends, it’s only going to get weirder from here. As the tech world runs screaming head first into the uncanny valley, lines will blur and everything will continue getting stranger.
#meta #ai #clone #newsonleo #technology #zuckerberg

FTC cracks down on DoNotPay, others for 'deceptive AI claims and schemes'
Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan said, "Using AI tools to trick, mislead, or defraud people is illegal."
The Federal Trade Commission on Wednesday announced a crackdown on what the regulator called "deceptive AI claims and schemes" by three business opportunity ventures and two companies, including the legal services firm DoNotPay.
#ftc #newsonleo #donotpay #ai #technology

It notes:
There are a lot of claims by Meta at the moment, such as that “Orion has the largest field of view (FOV) in the smallest AR glasses form to date.” Though we’re far too early for any specifics at this point, they can, however, be seen as a dig at the new Spectacles, which are extremely large with a very narrow FOV.
Grubhub-owner Just Eat Takeaway to deliver sex toys in partnership with adult retailer Lovehoney
#grubhub #technology #sextoys #newsonleo

Klarna partners with fellow fintech Adyen to bring buy now, pay later into physical stores
Klarna said Thursday that it had entered into an agreement with Adyen to add its buy now, pay later products to physical payment terminals.
Swedish firm Klarna is partnering up with Dutch payments fintech Adyen to bring its popular buy now, pay later service into physical retail stores.
#newsonleo #lmama #adyen #technology

The Federal trade commission is taking action against multiple companies that have relied on artificial intelligence as a way to supercharge deceptive or unfair conduct that harms consumers, as part of its new law enforcement sweep called Operation AI Comply.
DoNotPay
The complaint also alleges that DoNotPay offered a service that would check a small business website for hundreds of federal and state law violations based solely on the consumer’s email address.
Ascend Ecom
The complaint notes that, while Ascend promises consumers it will create stores producing five-figure monthly income by the second year, for nearly aLL consumers, the promised gains never materialize, and consumers are left with depleted bank accounts and hefty credit card bills.
Ecommerce Empire Builders
Rytr
FBA Machine
Surging AI demand could cause the world's next chip shortage, research says
A surge in demand for AI semiconductors and AI-enabled smartphones and laptops could lead to the next global chip shortage, according to Bain & Company.
A surge in demand for artificial intelligence-focused semiconductors and AI-enabled smartphones and laptops could lead to the next global chip shortage, according to a report released Wednesday by consultancy Bain & Co.

Better than chip shortages because of Bitcoin mining...
And also remember, some of the energy breakthroughs that are being used by these data centers were developed by Bitcoin miners.
Ooh~

Sam Altman reportedly poised to get equity in OpenAI for the first time
According to Reuters, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is poised to receive equity for the first time as the company plots a transition to a for-profit entity.
Following the abrupt departure of OpenAI’s CTO, Mira Murati, CEO Sam Altman is reportedly poised to receive equity in the company for the first time as OpenAI moves away from its longstanding nonprofit structure.
#openai #samaltman #equity #technology

Y Combinator's next Demo Day will include in-person seats for top VCs, Garry Tan says
After four years of fully online Demo Day presentations, YC president and CEO Garry Tan, said the event is returning to in person.
Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan wants to bring the famed accelerator’s Demo Day presentations back as in-person events by the end of the year.
#ycombinator #technology #newsonleo

#zuckerberg #ai #conversation #technology

Meta Missed Out on Smartphones. Can Smart Glasses Make Up for It?
At Meta’s Connect developer conference, CEO Mark Zuckerberg showed off Orion, a futuristic pair of smart glasses that the company hopes will lead the next foundational shift in personal computing.
#meta #newsonleo #technology #zuckerberg

Millions of Vehicles Could Be Hacked and Tracked Thanks to a Simple Website Bug
Researchers found a flaw in a Kia web portal that let them track millions of cars, unlock doors, and start engines at will—the latest in a plague of web bugs that’s affected a dozen carmakers.
#technology #automotive #hack

Airbnb at a Crossroads: Is the Innovative Travel Stock Running Out of Steam?!
#newsonleo #airbnb #travel #technolgoy

Educational Byte: Electronic Money vs. Cryptocurrency
#money #technology #digital #cryptocurrency
From 1996 to 2009, e-gold, a gold-based digital currency, amassed millions of users before being shut down by the U.S. government. By 1997, Coca-Cola introduced mobile payments for vending machines, and PayPal began offering its USD-based service in 1998. aLL of the above were fully dependent on banks and governments, though. money still came from the same ultimate source: a national central bank.
The landscape changed significantly with the advent of Bitcoin in 2009, which introduced decentralized digital currencies. These cryptocurrencies are distinct in their resistance to government regulation due to their lack of a central controlling entity.
In other words, there are no companies or closed groups behind their control, but only a global network of computers controlled by their owners. This setup ensures that no single entity has control over the currency, making it more resistant to censorship and manipulation.

With Artificial Intelligence, Meta Transforms Glasses into “Brain Extension”
This Wednesday (25), during Meta Connect 2024, the controller of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Threads announced its main bets for next year. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Big Tech, began the afternoon presentations with a message: “It’s been a busy year, but we can finally envision the future of human connection.”
#newsonleo #ai #technology #meta
Benefits of Decentralization
Additionally, users have greater (or full, depending on the underlying technology — see below) control over their funds, as they hold private keys to their digital wallets, unlike fiat money which is stored and controlled by corporations that can freeze it or restrict the user’s freedom to use their money.
More autonomy, less censorship
While cryptocurrencies are designed to be decentralized, they can still be susceptible to manipulation or censorship, especially in networks where there are middlemen before a final transaction approval. miners and “validators”, for instance, could potentially collude to influence the network, such as blocking certain transactions or favoring others, thus undermining the system's integrity.
FTC Announces the Addition of Three Consumer Protection Agencies to an International Agreement Aimed at Enhancing Cooperation in Cross-Border Enforcement Matters
The Federal Trade Commission announced today that the consumer protection agencies of Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, and Panama have joined an existing agreement that the FTC reached in 2023 with the consumer protection authorities of Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru to promote cooperation among the agencies to protect consumers from cross-border fraud, deception, and other illegal practices.
The Federal Trade Commission works with counterpart agencies to promote sound antitrust, consumer protection, and data privacy enforcement and policy. The FTC will never demand money, make threats, tell you to transfer money, or promise you a prize. New FTC Data Shed Light on Companies Most Frequently Impersonated by Scammers
New data from the Federal Trade Commission shows that Best Buy/Geek Squad, Amazon, and PayPal are the companies people report scammers impersonate most often.
Scammers requested a variety of payment methods, including cryptocurrency and bank transfers, which were the top methods used by investment scammers, according to the data spotlight. Other frequently reported payment methods included payment apps or services and gift cards. The top payment apps and services people reported paying with were PayPal, CashApp and Zelle, while the most reported gift cards were Apple and Target.

This $2.1 Billion AI Company Is Making Tens Of Millions In Revenue By Automating Dull Workplace Tasks
Moveworks has crossed $100 million in annual recurring revenue, a milestone that many hyped AI startups have not yet reached.
#newsonleo #technology #ai
When ChatGPT launched in November 2022, company executives scrambled to figure out how to use generative AI systems to make their businesses run more efficiently. nOW, after what seems like a marathon of flashy demos and announcements, they’re eager to cut through the hype and roll out tools that actually trim costs and offer a real return on investment.
This Startup Aims To Regenerate Damaged Tissues With The Help Of AI And Lasers

Revolutionizing Disease Treatment: Cellino's Breakthrough Technology Makes Personalized Stem Cell Therapies Affordable
The Challenge of iPSCs
iPSCs are created by reprogramming adult cells to behave like embryonic stem cells, allowing them to transform into any cell type. This potential has sparked hope for treating degenerative diseases. However, the current process of creating useful tissues from iPSCs is labor-intensive and expensive, costing hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars per patient.
Cellino's Solution
Founded in 2017, Cellino has developed self-contained units called cassettes, likened to "Nespresso pods," which can grow personalized cell treatments on-site at hospitals. This technology has garnered significant attention, including a $25 million grant from the federal government's Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) and $96 million in venture capital funding.
How it Works
Cellino's automated system utilizes computer vision to monitor cell growth and lasers to eliminate unhealthy cells. This approach enables mass production of iPSCs, making personalized treatments more accessible. The company plans to use its recent funding to develop a more compact version of its technology, ideal for widespread hospital use.
Expert Endorsement
Susan Hockfield, former MIT president and neuroscience professor, praises Cellino's innovative approach, citing its ability to "industrialize the production of cells." Alex Morgan, partner at Khosla Ventures, highlights Cellino's multidisciplinary team as a key advantage, making it difficult for competitors to replicate.
A Vision for the Future
Cellino's CEO, Nabiha Saklayen, envisions a future where personalized iPSCs are available to patients everywhere. With its groundbreaking technology and significant funding, Cellino is poised to revolutionize disease treatment, making hope a reality for millions.

Artemis Mission: NASA sends dummies to the Moon to evaluate astronauts' journey
As NASA's Artemis II mission — which will send four astronauts to circumnavigate the Moon next year — approaches, a new study reveals how well the Orion spacecraft will protect the crew. To do this, dummies flew around the Moon in a mission that astronauts will soon be able to follow. Scientists have also just revealed what the models' trip was like.
#newsonleo #space #nasa

Depends on your vote procent. You can just try and vote to see. I miss a feature that showcase the estimated vote value.
I set my thread votes to 25 percent. I guess it would make more sense to make it 100 percent right?
I have mine at 5 and instead try to spread many votes
but would it pay if regardless? With a 2000 leopower?
I cant say 100% sure. Tried to ask this before and never got a good answer.
I guess I'd have to upvote to see. It would be next to impossible to track though
It uses a distribution of voting... so the less voting power you have the less your power to upvote will be.
So if you upvote all the way down... you will need to recover....
what I mean is would you get anything for upvoting with a 2000 Leopower?
Not really. If you do it at 100% you only get about 10 votes per day. Each time you vote, it reduces it. The VP only recharges 20% per day so you want to keep it above 80%.
Oh yeah, but I wanted to know if as little as 5% upvotes on threads with a Leopower of 2000 will yield anything?
It does pay out something since there is no threashold to hit. Leo will pay out .001.
It is good to get in the habit. That is the important thing. Over time, if active, your 2K LEO will grow. So I would keep it at 5% and be active.
Okay deal, I'm doing that and staying very active.

When you stake Leo tokens, do you get the ApR passively or you'd have to upvote like HP to get the Leo staked APR?
#cent #askonleo
you have to upvote /curate.
I don't think passive APR is there.
Oh okay got it.
Both! 😜 like it?
yeah that's cool, so what would be the difference?
HP gives 3% passive and 9% curation. What about Leo power

My first time seeing this thread. How do I become a member?
Well, I can tag you as a volunteer starting as early as tomorrow!
However, if you want to become a Mental Health Ambassador, that would come with with some pay but also with some more important responsibilities. Let me know whether you're interested in that!
Use this pinned post to post links in case the InLeo Ul isn't working well for you.
