Exposing my equipment

Sometimes people ask about my equipment. It's not very impressive, not overly big or powerful, however it serves me well and I believe I use it to good effect.

I'm talking about my photography equipment of course, a rather basic set up but one that gives me the opportunity to snap a photo now and then and obtain an average result commensurate with my skills. I'm certainly not a photographer by any stretch of the imagination, but I know how to point a camera and click a shutter release button...what else is there?

For these images I used my lightbox, a box open at the front only with a hole in the top to shoot through also, and it has a light-ring in the top to illuminate subjects. It's a super-cheap one my girl-person bought for me but it does the job. Maybe someday I'll invest in a better one but for now, like the rest of my equipment, it works and that's good enough.

My camera is an Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III mirrorless and I purchased it in 2020 in a kit that came with three lenses. I thought it was good value although was at the upper end of what I'd wanted to spend at the time. The three lenses sold me though as I figured it would mean I'd not have to get any others...but then I wanted to do macro shots.

The lenses I have are all Original Olympus lenses as below however the macro lens wasn't part of the kit:

  • 14-42mm
  • 40-150mm
  • 25mm fixed
  • 60mm macro

Not long after getting the camera and playing around with it a little I started to investigate the macro lens and decided I wanted it...but it was bloody expensive. I saved up for a while and got it though, the 60mm macro lens pictured above, and I've really enjoyed shooting with it.

The photos I have included in this post are all shot using the macro lens other than the shots of the camera itself, I took those with my Samsung S22 Ultra and the one two images down which I shot with the 25mm. In some of the shots you can see some coloured light patterns in the lenses which comes from the light-ring in the top of the lightbox. I think they look kind of cool, although the shots themselves probably aren't all that great.

I'm certainly no great photographer, I bumble my way through mostly and play around with the settings here and there hoping for a good result. Being a digital camera, I one can take many pictures and delete those that are rubbish...I get many of those. But I enjoy it, I have fun taking the shots, and that's what counts to me. I don't take photos for other people, I'm only on Hive so don't use them on social media; I take them for me, for fun, and fun is what I have.

So there's my equipment in a nutshell. I have a tripod of course, but that's the only other thing I use. I get creative with lighting making use of torches, natural light and the light-ring in the lightbox but mostly I keep it simple. I'm planning to do a course one of these days, but until then bumbling along is good enough.

This is a great set up of equipment. I read the headline and laughed because I knew you were poking fun.

I like the lighting effect you got in your lenses with the light ring. I took some photos of my gear last week when I cleaned all my equipment, but I'm definitely not going to post them now, they are all very shit in comparison 🤣

So now I can understand why your macro shots are so amazing. Your macro lens has a big aperture. Nice. You certainly do get phenomenal pics.

I read the headline and laughed because I knew you were poking fun.

It might have gone over some people's heads; I thought it was devilishly clever, or fucking stupid, the jury is still out.

My gear does its job for now. I have my eye on some other things but I'll have to rob the bank, or just steal them directly from the camera shop if I am to get them.

Your macro lens has a big aperture

I have other big things too. My 200 Series Landcruiser for one.

If I knew what aperture was I would have made a sensible comment in reply. 😁

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha. I knew the title was a pun and a very cool one. I always wanted to know what did you use for those amazing photos you take. Mystery solved!

I guess that you can get good at photography as you keep pointing your camera at something and start getting creative to do the shoots. Besides, no one sees the mistakes and you can erase them withouts wasting any film.

Yay, the second person to make reference to my title. It amused me so felt right.

Most of my photos used on Hive are taken on my phone but the macro shots are all on the camera l. It does a good job...all I need to do is press the shutter release button.

I need one to start taking macro shots. But they are quite expensive. Well, I'll have start a savings plan like I did for my laptop.

I thought for a moment it was a post about guns or something else, but then saw the community and it was even better. Great gear. If it does the job, that's the whole point of the tool

Putting a little away here and there is the way to go, that's what I did. I gave up when I was acouple hundred dollars away from the total amount and just bought it but I'm glad I made the effort of having the savings plan. Made me appreciate the purchase more.

Yes, I have done lots of purchases like that. Making the effort helps you understand the value of the thing. Let's see if I ever get one. I will say that before I'm 40, I'll buy a professional camera.

Talk about bating us with that headline! I love a good pun! That Zoom lens though !LOL

That Zoom lens though

Oh yeah, it's pretty big huh? Pretty capable too, if used right. 😆

Sorry about the title, I sometimes cannot help my nutbaggery emerging. I just wrote a post for Wednesday, also a macro photography post and, yep, nutbaggery ensues once again.

!LOL the puns just keep cumin! Oops I did it again!

Please don't apologise - its not your fault I love the nutbaggery, - I blame my mother, and also the media probably, but my mother is also a big part to blame!

At least this time I feel less disappointed than when I came for chocolate I got nothing! Delivery is key!

Lol, see? It's hard not to get involved.

Let the nutbaggery flow.

we are all like a bunch of squirrels when it come to nutbaggery! cant resit the bag of nuts!

One must enjoy nuts, everybody knows that.

Bawhahahaha !LOLZ

I know my opinion doesn't really count but I think it looks impressive XD

It always counts!

Thanks for saying so. It's great equipment and helps me to be less shit when I take photos.

That is some really nice equipment. You do real good work for having no formal training at all IMO. I know very little about photography other than what I can remember from my military training in the early 90's. That isn't much other than point, center the subject, and shoot. I was trained on the Nikonus IV and V way back then. They were nice rugged 35mm cameras for their time. May need to dig up our digital camera up out of the closet. It is nothing to brag about, but may start putting it to use and see what I can do with it.

Thanks mate, I almost went bonkers and spent way more however I decided this would suffice for one with my level of photographic ability and I get a lot of enjoyment from it so it all worked out.

Maybe it'll be a good thing to dig out your camera and take some shots, even if no one sees them. Drive down to the park or wander in the city/town and snap some things then go home and see what you managed to get. I find it enjoyable, relaxing and it's a nice feeling to capture one out of many that I feel is decent. It gets me out of the house, gives me time to think and comes with a reward at the end. Think on it.

Thanks for your comment.

Oh I am, I am already going crazy trying to figure out where it is. Waiting on the wife so I can ask her if she knows where it is. Already have some local trips planned in my head with the son.

Wives know where everything is. Lol.

I love it! What great pictures!

I'm not a photographer either but I enjoy the process of taking pictures.

The ones I liked the most are 2 and 6. I still have a lot more to learn about this world than you, but it fascinates me and little by little I'm learning. I also inherited this taste from my grandfather, but at that time digital cameras were not used.

Enjoying and learning, that's what I like.

I loved the publication Galenkp, thank you!

I think the enjoyment of the things we do, hobbies, is the main thing and what is more important than being an expert at it. I'm glad you like a couple of my images, I had a good time trying to get something that was decent.

I like them all, but they caught my attention the most. The wonderful thing about life is to enjoy the things we do.

I enjoy enjoyment and get enjoyment from people enjoying the things I enjoy. 🤪😁

Me too!!!

I was just leaving! Good night!!!

I'm only on Hive so don't use them on social media; I take them for me, for fun, and fun is what I have.

And that in a nutshell is what it is all about.

Yep, it's something I like to do and irrespective of whether people like them or not the fun-factor is the same. I understand that it's people's job sometimes like kommienezuspadt for instance, but for me, just fun and I'm content with that.

same mindset, if it becomes a job it adds pressure, but hey ho, if it pays the bills crack on.

You have never admitted to being awesome with the camera, it is a great thing to be a pro and still be humble.

I don't know much about cameras but these are good gadgets judging by the quality of images you have posted on Hive. The name Olympus sounds familiar but not for devices, people are obsessed with canon here and I think it's really expensive.

You have never admitted to being awesome with the camera, it is a great thing to be a pro and still be humble.

If by pro you mean very average with a camera, then sure, that's what I am. 😁

I used to have a Canon camera and Nikon also, however when I was looking for a new one they didn't have what I was looking for so I went with the Olympus; they've been making cameras since 1936. It had the features and lenses I wanted and was at a reasonable price, all up around $2,200 AUD which is pretty reasonable.

I do not mean average, honestly you are good at what you do.

1936 is quite a long time and I think a brand name doesn't matter really, going for what we really need without going beyond our budget is great.

Only an idiot pays money for something they don't need. I'm not an idiot.

I really like the lightbox and I have a cheap one too, but, it does what it needs to do without much fanfare. How did you get it to pump up and isolate the blue color? I think you do great with your pictures. You are patient and willing to keep at it until it gives you what you want.

I find most people have more equipment than they know what to do with.

The 60mm is such a nice lens with its capabilities and lightness. I think they are sharp as a tack and you can really get up close and personal. I think you use the equipment you have just fine, no need for the disclaimer. ;)

Thanks for your comment I appreciate it. I have so many failures but that's part of the enjoyment I guess, and I'm not the guy who allows it to dissuade me from a thing, I just keep trying, as you point out.

I'm not sure what you mean by isolate the blue. If you'd like to explain, I'll let you know. 😊

Did I point out that you have so many failures, and you just keep on trying? Noooo such luck, dude. That is far from the truth.

In some of the shots you can see some coloured light patterns in the lenses which comes from the light-ring in the top of the lightbox.

I didn't word it properly, but, that blue light is what I was talking about. Was that on the lens of the colored light pattern from the lights on the top of the box?

Thanks so much, Galen.

Ah ok, yeah those colours on the lens, the patterns, are reflected from th LED's in the light-ring in the top of the lightbox. It's annoying sometimes depending on what I'm shooting, if it's reflective or not, but in this case it came out ok.

Thank you! Still, this one made a nice shot. I really need to use my Lightbox more. I like the clean, crisp way the images come out. Nicely done.

Thanks Swigs, I hope you have a great week ahead; wouldn't that be great? 😉

"So there's my equipment in a nutshell."

So glad you did not say "in a nutsack".

I heard that rumour round the Hive that You have some pretty nice equipment. Now I can agree. I would like to see a photo of that camera with a shoulder strap "Well Hung" around your strong masculine shoulder... Hehehehuntitled.gif

I hauled a load of scrap metal in to recycle a week or so back. You should have seen all the people who...

Stopped to L👀k at MY JUNK! 😂🤣😂

Lol...I might do a shoulder strap shoot one of these days...one must cater for ones fans.

Look at you haulin' your junk all over the place making people stop and take notice.

I know right. Sometimes you even have to pull over and check your junk. Adjust it. Make sure it is secure and in the proper position. LoL

I crack meeself up sometimes.

you-crack-me-up-shut.gif

Lol...One must shift one's junk. It is known.

Awesome light rings on the lenses brother. I thought everything was black and white at first but the rings showed up in color, very impressed.
Your intro line made me laugh. I again laughed at girl-person, lol, WTF kind of name is that?

They came out good right? I was pretty happy with it, even though it haop Ned by accident not design. Lol.

Girl-person...yeah, better that than saying her name I guess. I was going to go for human-she-creature but decided against it...in case she ever saw it; I'd have to suffer the wrath and nothing is worth that.

They came out awesome dude.

I call mine a beautiful creature, she likes it, lol.

I call mine a beautiful creature

Bloody sweet talker huh? I like it, shows character. I don't say on here what I call mine, but she likes it and that's what counts.

As long as we keep them happy, we can hope they keep us happy. That's all that matters, am I wrong?

There will be no disagreement from this little black duck. You have the right of it indeed.

For God's sake, what other team can you talk about 🤭.
But how wrongheaded you guys are.

Playing a little bit with the title. It is not understood in English?

Hmm, ok yeah I was having a little joke with my title.

It is not understood in English?

And no, it didn't really translate well to English, but that's ok, I know what you mean now.

Oh my God. Between what I mean and what is translated there is a chasm 🙈.
That's why I avoid joking or speaking in double entendre.

Haha, there sure is...I was like, Liseth has gone full bonkers, which is why I questioned it. No worries though.

That's why I avoid joking or speaking in double entendre.

I get it, but it's fun to do so.

But I didn't say anything wrong? Or did I?
If it translated into something crazy, let me know, please 🙈

Nah, it wasn't wrong, just didn't make a lot of sense in context to the post. Don't worry about it, it's all sorted.

Ok. I read this message and by God I'm dying of laughter 🤭.

You have a really good gear man, those lens are really good, the 40- 150mm one is really useful for a lot of occasions, the lens that have a lot of zooms are valuable for me, with these you can take goods photographys without been noticed

It's good gear for sure and I make good use out of it. Interestingly, I don't use the zoom as much as I had thought I would. I should use it more.

I've always thought you're using phone, possibly a high end phone, because your pictures were so clear.
The two major common camera here are Cannon and Nikon, I'm not sure I've seen an Olympus before. They looks great though

My phone gets used for a lot of my photos, my Samsung S22 Ultra, but the macro shots are done with the camera.

I love this camera but I thought it was canon that has the best shot what taking photography

I used to shoot Canon, EOS500, and before that shot Nikon. This one suits me though. Maybe you could show us the shots you've taken with your Canon.

I need your help. Can't find you in Discord. May you please reply me in my ID: @asifhasansid#5088

This is a post you placed into my community - total rubbish and quite senseless.

I don't know what makes you think I have any desire to want to contact you on Discord but just for clarity, I do not want to. Your post, above, clearly demonstrates your quality, that is, lack of quality.

Again, for clarity. You entitled your post:

Do you really think I'd want to contact a person who did such idiotic and childish things? To be clear, the answer is no.
