Memories Of Vietnam In Pictures: Pleiku

in #photos7 years ago

A friend on Pinterest posted several pictures of Pleiku in the Central Highlands where I spent a good deal of time... Between there and Ahn Ke where Hue Pham was from. There was a Special Forces base there and we were able to get supplies and transportation from both there and Ahn Ke where there was also a fairly good field hospital.

Lovely downtown Pleiku... When I was there there was a street vendor selling strips of spiced meat on spits. It smelled delicious so I tried some (and it was). It turned out to be monkey!

I spent a good deal of time in and around the Laotian & Cambodian borders (We weren't in Laos or Cambodia)... For anybody that thinks the nurses there had it any better than the rest of us- check this photo taken near the Cambodian border.

Miam - Monkey!

I had some vienames folks stay with me for a season - their cooking was excellent. Now I know why!

PS:// Jane is going to be ok. She updated the post.

The one thing I couldn't stand was nuocmam (I think that's spelled right). Fish sauce... I don't know how they make it here, it comes in bottles- but over there they bury fish wrapped in leaves and let it rot. Then they drain off all that nasty liquid (It looks like watery snot) and stinks to high hell!!! They put it on everything.

Thank God Jane's ok! Was it a heart attack? I'll still say a Rosary (just to be safe)

I love vietnamese food and nuoc mam cham (which is made with nuoc mam, chili garlic sauce, sugar, vinegar and water)which we call fish sauce. My youngest hates fish but likes this fish sauce but she changed the name to sea sauce because of her fish prejudice.
Hawthorn berry is the #1 herbal tonic for your heart!

The stuff I'm talking about I think is different... They wrapped fish up in leaves and buried them and let them rot- then they poured off the juice.

My stuff is made with that(from a bottle though).

Those guys had it coming out of their pores... You could smell it on them 10 feet away! And when it comes to fish- I'm with your daughter!

That would be rank.

The stuff your talking about is the origin of soy sauce and ketchup. The Romans had a version called Garum.

Appreciate the prayer - They said that it was "an anxiety induced cardiac event."
I spoke to her - @disarrangedjane is in good spirits - soon to be back on giggle duty!

I had a real one in Oct. 2014 it ain't no fun!!! I thought I had one years ago... bad chest pains all day. My wife came home from work and called my doc who told her to give me something with aspirin- she gave me an alka seltzer and took me to the hosp. (28 miles) On the way I belched- it was gas!

That made me laugh, cruising the strip in the family tank. What a shitty experience that must have been.

At least they were safe... You know what great drivers the Asians are (just wait until they get into NASCAR!)

You should had run over the vendor guy with the family car.

That LZ spot just had a lot of napalm treatment.

Great photos, poor nurses tho.

Or agent orange! That monkey was pretty good- it tasted kind of like Teriyaki with a little curry... it was spiced so much you couldn't tell what it was.

Those nurses were as dedicated as any of the guys. Those ladies in the picture were right out in the shit with the rest of us.

Oh shucks man, agent orange. I am glad you are still here to tell about it.
Thee US army just sterilized a big chunk of Viet land and people with that poison.

I was out of there in 66 before they started using it (I was lucky!)

That's nice to hear. @richq11

Great pics my brother! Thank you for your service.

Thank you for the appreciation... we didn't get much when we came back!

You're a cannibal! You ate your own, spiced, kin!

He ain't my kin... Only people who believe they are descended from apes are!

I can not even imagine what you feel when you look at these photos ... You have to be very strong to keep yourself in this. Many years ago I wanted to go with peacekeepers to Yugoslavia. My father supported my decision. But they did not let me in because I was divorced and I had a small child.

I don't know how this sounds, but it never really bothered me. It hurt when I saw kids get killed or animals (there were guys that shot at animals for fun) But the fighting never really bothered me much.

I think I understand. Children and animals are rarely to blame. They suffer innocent. Adult people choose their own destiny. I am often reproached that I am helping animals, not people.

My dad was in Pleiku. He is retired Air Force. I don't know much more because he doesn't talk about it a lot. I bet he ate some monkey too. He likes food. I just got him out of the hospital yesterday. He had a quadruple bypass 15 years ago and just went through his first round of chest pains. Not bad, I'd say.

I'll say a prayer for him! I never saw Air Force there... There was 4th Inf, SF and they opened (I think in 68) a Psy Ops unit. When I was there there wasn't an airfield, only an LZ for the choppers... But I imagine when they opened the PsyOps center they would need one.

I don't even know what years he was there. If I had to guess, I would say late 60's maybe, but I really have no idea.

I'm pretty sure that by 68 they probably had an airstrip... I was there in 65 and it was a mudhole with a LZ!

wonderfull photo😍
keep it up and always be happy 😍

I don't think you read the post.
