This is a bit of a sad Tree Tuesday post. I came home to find my beautiful Ash tree marked with a yellow ribbon, along with twenty or so other trees that line our beautiful circle. Often times, a yellow ribbon around a tree is a show of support and solidarity. In this case, the yellow ribbon means certain death. The city has declared war on all Ash trees due to the infestation of the Emerald Ash borer, and my tree is the next victim.
What drew me to this neighborhood was the circle lined with mature trees and the unique houses nestled beneath those leafy bowers. Soon, we will all come home to an empty street with few towering giants throwing dappled sunlight on the soft grass below. I am so sad that my little ones won't be able to sit under the cooling shade or be greeted by its rustling leaves. It's truly like a knife in the heart, and that yellow ribbon reminds me the reality is coming closer and closer. One day, I will return from work to find nothing but a stump of a magnificent tree left where beauty once stood.
Goodbye, my friend tree. I promise to continue your legacy by planting another tree. Actually, my plan is to plant two in honor of the adoption of my two little ones. May those trees grow to be as strong and proud as you. May they create new memories of warm summer days and cool breezes. I may not be here in twenty years when they have reached their full glory, but may they continue to live a long and healthy life and be as magnificent as you once were.
That's sad to hear, but having trees named after your kids is cool. We have three as you know :)
Do you mean three kids or three trees named after kids? The first I knew, obviously, but the second I didn't!
Oh that's so sad. We are also experiencing a lot of yellow ribbons in our area at the moment. There's a bit of a council vs the people thing going on...
My neighbourhood is full of old trees, and the council has decided it's time for them all to go as they are damaging the pavements.
The locals are horrified at this, yet it's still happening.
In fact, it's so crazy that the council are sending out their tree demolishers in 'morning raids' so that the local protestors aren't there to stop them...
I'm so sad for you too! They still haven't cut any down...it's almost like I'm being taunted, although I don't want to lose my tree. My guy who delivers my groceries commented yesterday about the number of ribbons in the neighborhood and how bare it was going to be. Winter in this street has always been so beautiful because of the beauty of the snow falling on the tree lined street. It almost takes you back in time. This year is going to be so different! I'm sorry for your loss as well!
O no is there really nothing they can do for it?
The city said we could pay to have it treated and keep it, but if it ever had to come down later, it would be at our own expense. My neighbor and I consulted an arborist. We were basically told that the treatment is quite costly, and unless you've been treating it for years, has a very slim chance of being effective. So you can spend the money and take a huge risk or spend less money and replant. With the possibility of me adopting two little ones in the near future, every penny is going to be needed, so I can't try and save it as much as it breaks my heart not to!
I understand. Must have been a difficult decision. Are you adopting trees? I hope you have a wonderful day, following you!
Two kids...and hopefully two trees as well :-)
Nice! How old are they gonna be? I hope you have a WONDERFUL day!
They are one and three. My hands and heart are full!
Boys/girls?
That's sad. Sorry for the loss of your beloved tree. Do plant new ones. You'll be glad you did.

It's just too bad new ones take so long to grow! I'm thinking about redbuds right now...
That is a towering ash tree to come home to, lovely. Sad to hear it will be gone soon. There is something about two trees being planted at this new turn in your life.
Yes, that will be a sweet memory, and one we wouldn't be able to do if the other tree didn't come down. The Little Man is excited to have his own tree. It's just going to look so different for a long time! I love on a circle instead of a block. There are literally between 15-20 trees marked all the way around the circle. So much charm and character will be lost!
