What would you do to stay alive and what would you do to keep your family alive?
Would you harm another person? Would you do something out of character or of an extremely difficult nature? Would you eat a rabbit? I'm not asking for an answer here, just posing the questions so that whomever reads this may think a little on the subject because in the world to come some pre-preparation could be advantageous.
So, let's just say you want to survive and want to keep your family alive but you're in a dire situation from a food perspective for whatever reason...you're going to starve to death - a terrible way to go - and along hops a rabbit and (lets assume) you have the skills required to catch/trap/snare it and actually have the skills to skin and dress it for cooking...Here's a recipe I have made myself in the field and one which I'd suggest is a legitimate meal for someone in the above situation.
Ingredients
- 1 rabbit dressed and disjointed
- 1/3 cup oil (any will do if in a tight spot - just not motor oil for obvious reasons)
- 2 cups of water
- 4 cups of raw vegetables cut up (whatever you have on hand)
- 1 teaspoon of salt and same of pepper (plus a little more)
- 1/4 cup of flour (any will do)
Method
Combine the flour, salt and pepper and roll the rabbit in it to coat then brown off the rabbit in a heated pan. Add water and cover to cook on a low heat for about one hour or until the rabbit is reasonably tender. Add the vegetables (you can add a little more water if required), some additional salt and pepper to taste and continue to cook for about twenty minutes or so - it's cooked when the vegetables are cooked to your personal liking.
It's pretty simple to make and pretty simple food generally but it'll certainly keep you alive. One can add different vegetables if available but I like potatoes, carrots, peas, onion and green beans. It makes no difference what you use though and whatever you have to hand is good enough. Variations are possible such as adding a few squirts of sweet chili sauce, a soup stock cube or even concentrated tomato paste...it's your rabbit stew so make it up as you go.
I know eating rabbits isn't what most people would like to do and in truth I'm one of those people...however as I've said in other posts of mine sometimes survival has to take priority over one's preferences and choices.
Rabbit is a legitimate food and has been for a long time and in many cultures and countries including here in Australia - it's even still available in supermarkets here. A word of caution though, some rabbits can carry diseases and it'd be unadvisable to eat those ones so if hunting/trapping/snaring them for yourself make sure you're selective.
I've not had to use this recipe or eat a rabbit for a survival reason but I have the skills to do so. Sure, I may never use it or may not have a convenient stash of vegetables, flour, salt and pepper at the moment in which I do need to cook a rabbit to survive but the skill is transferrable and adaptable and I'd rather have the skill, and made sure it works, than not.
What about you? Would you eat a rabbit or some other non-conventional food to stay alive or would you prefer to starve to death? Remember, you're dead for a long time before you answer. Have you ever been hungry enough to consider eating something you'd usually turn away from? Do you have any rabbit recipes you'd like to share? Feel free to do so.
Note: Yes, I am fully aware that the image is not a rabbit - I just didn't have any rabbit images of my own and refuse to use stock images.

Rabbit is so delicious. I have a friend that used to raise rabbits and chickens for food. My other friend was getting married and the both of us were in the wedding. For his bachelor party he wanted to go camping. We took our trailers to one of the state parks and just hung out for the weekend together. Anyway, the guy who raised rabbits and chickens brought some and cooked it over the fire in his dutch oven. It was amazing. Probably one of the best campfire meals I have ever had.
Yeah, I'm not surprised to read this and have heard a few others say so. It's really a legitimate meal option although seems is losing favour these days. Back in the day it was a table food here, and I think probabky in many other countries as well. For our big chain-supermarkets to stock it still speaks of it's popularity even now.
That's more than we have. You won't find it in the stores here. You have to know the right people. I've been to a couple wild game dinners and those are usually a lot of fun. Lots of good food and gun raffles!
Wild game is pretty available here, and foods from other countries as well, we're pretty spoilt for choice really. 😀
Not a rabbit image but I love koalas!!! Very much!
Well I would eat it, and yes I have eaten different things that under normal circumstances I wouldn't have done, things that I don't like at all but when I'm hungry it doesn't matter.
For example in Argentina is very famous the hare which is a kind of rabbit, or the vizcacha, deer, wild boar and I have eaten them .... they were given to me by a person I knew who had gone hunting and well .... I wasn't going to refuse, it was a time of hunger.
So to the question if I would eat unusual things and more if my family is hungry. I would.
Koalas are good for cuddling, not so good for eating although, I suppose, I haven't tried to eat one so I'm only surmising. (I have cuddled one and they're pretty good cuddlers)
To sustain life humans will eat pretty much anything, generally; I think it's in our DNA, the will to survive, and that gives us the ability to do things we may not under normal circumstances.
In exceptional circumstances the instinct will say... you have to eat and no matter what, you have to be in that situation.
I was told koalas are violent... is it true?
Nah, they are not violent. They will get mad with each other at times, protect their young, but I'd not go as far as saying they are violent. They sit up in eucalyptus trees and eat leaves then go to sleep. That's the life of a koala in a nutshell.
Beautiful. Too bad you can't have them as pets! I love their little face.
I have them over the road in the conservation park and see them regularly. I've tried several times to get a decent photo but they always look like a furry blob high up in a tree so the photos don't come out so well. One day I'll have my zoom lens with me and I'll get a good one. The one in this post was taken at the zoo.
It's beautiful!!! I love them, they are very tender.
That rabbit is gone burgers for me. I LOVE rabbit.
I first had it when I was 15 when I was in hospital because I took a header off a balcony while playing ball tag. It was rabbit stew and frankly was the last time I have ever had a decent meal in a hospital. Mind you I've only only been in hospital once since that incident.
I love the fact that Americans are going to chew their mind trying to work out what sort of rabbit is in that picture. 🤣
Yeah, those who try it tend to like it...well, except for vegans...they don't like it (or much else for that matter.) 😆
"A decent hospital meal"...I've had a few of those, but some terrible ones too. It's like airline food, one likes it or not. I'm the guy that thinks airline food is ok...although have had a few bad ones like in hospital as well.
"Header off the balcony"...Well done! I applaud you as it sounds like something I would have done. Kids will be kids. Nice work.
I was going to leave the image of the koala and not say anything to see if anyone said, "cute rabbit photo (expecting Americans of course) but thought I'd clarify. Actually, my first option was to use a meercat photo I have (many of them actually, from the zoo) but I used one in the last few weeks on another post and didn't want to use another so soon.
But yeah, it's a cute rabbit for sure. 😆
I got ya covered... (Images)
We rescued a few over the years gone by.
Did not eat them tho.
Thanks man..I. was certain I had one and then...nope, none. The Koala photo worked well though right? 😂
L👀ks like the low i.q. guy Amirl is spreading his mental illness around. I just got an unvote from the douchebag for no reason other than his hatred.
What a sick bastard he is huh..?
Yeah, he thinks it hurts me somehow to downvote people who comment to me; he's a fucken greasy cunt for sure and isn't winning any friends.
"Greasy Cunt"... I laughed out loud on that one while sitting here at a fuel pump waiting for a parking spot to vacate to make room for me to park at 5:53 am on a Tuesday morning. 🤨😂🤣
Gotta call it how it is, the mother fucker, Amir Levy, is a piece of shit.
They are so cute!🐰
I think I would eat a rabbit. I think I am open to eating pretty much any livestock. I've eaten lamb and goat, which is already uncommon the Philippines. I think I would draw the line on Cats and Dogs, but in a life or death scenario, as long as it isn't my pet, I can probably eat those as well.
I guess we'll never know what we may eat if in a life and death scenario until we're in it. Rabbit isn't all that unusual really and, as I said, is still commercially available here. Some people absolutely love it.
Lol
I was thinking it is a rabbit unless I have read your last statement 😅
Ummm, people often eat rabbits in our area and it isn't like if you are starving to death only then you will eat.
I liked your recipe though.
People will eat almost anything rather than starving, history is full of examples of this...people have also eaten each other. (Not something I'd want to do.)
Rabbit with garlic:
Ingredients:
1 rabbit cut into pieces 2 peeled garlic heads olive oil 300 ml of white wine Water to cover the rabbit Fresh thyme Salt
The first thing to do is to brown the garlic in the hot oil, then remove it. The next step is to fry the pieces of rabbit until they take color, there are people who do not fry the liver so that the rabbit does not take its flavor. Then add the white wine, the thyme and the garlic together with the rabbit. Cover the container and cook until the rabbit is tender. The sauce can be reduced after the rabbit is done.
This is my recipe, have a great day.
I reckon that'd taste pretty good...garlic has a way of making most things taste awesome!
Thanks for taking the time to share this recipe.
🤗
I have seen people eating wild rabbits here jn my area. They hunt them from the jungle, cook them like a spicy treat.... Here the tribal have all kind of taste. They even ate pigeons,...often they were in lookout for pigeons in the household....as said just for survival
I know a few who have eaten pigeons although it's not common here and I've never eaten them. I've eaten quail though, probably not unlike a pigeon only smaller.
@galenkp , Me looking for a rabbit photo and a how it looks like when it is cooked based on the ingredients you've shared 🤣😄 i havent taste rabbit yet, but i tried tasting some exotic food for travel experiences. Does the rabbit tastes like chicken?
Hmm, rabbit doesn't really taste like chicken at all, the texture is a little different and it has a stronger flavour. I mostly hide the flavour of it with other things and use it in stews and casseroles rather than roasting it on a fire...but it depends on the situation.
I took a basic survival skills class, basically down to surviving with little more than a knife (if even that). The instructor said as soon as you realize you're in a survival situation in a remote area, find a decently weighted but not too thin/thick log thats about the length of your forearm. To be thrown sidearm at any small rabbit or squirrel you see. Obviously you're not going to starve to death immediately but you'll likely need the energy to build a shelter and get yourself out of the jam you're in.
That's good advice with the throwing log, probably a learned skill by someone who had to think on their feet. Most people in a survival situation do the most damage to themselves through panicking and the best way to avoid panic is to have some skills, be prepared as you are.
Over here, rabbit meat is a delicacy, it's even reared in pens for meat production. It is fire dried, smoked or oven dried for consumption.
In dire situations, one would do anything or eat anything to survive, the question of ethics becomes very irrelevant.
I agree, in a situation where the options were to eat something unconventional or starve I think most would choose to eat than die.
I look at the picture and do not connect with the title😃
Until I read the intro 🙂
from game I ate (not in nature, but after hunting, prepared in home conditions) pheasant, rabbit, deer and wild pig.
In nature, I ate the fish we caught on the river or lake, right after fishing...
When I was a kid, we set up a rabbit farm with my relatives in the village. They multiplied quickly, but we realized that they are sensitive to health, so we gave up breeding.
During that period, we ate rebbit on a spit (then the meat is too hard), and in goulash, which is an excellent recipe.
Yeah for sure, it's not that good when coocked on a spit, too tough, but in a goulash, stew or casserole (all basically the same thing) it's not too bad at all.
I really would have a hard time eating a rabbit. A real hard time having to kill. But if it was to save my girls I would.
I'd just eat the grass the rabbit was surviving on xx
Lol...the grass...I see you hopping around like a little rabbit twitching your nose from side to side looking for the good grass! 😉
Eating Rabbits!!!😩
