Boredom eating causes a lot of weight gain for many of us. Food is just so good! Eating at restaurants, Snacking, Eating at home. It's the greatest thing ever.
Over eating causes a lot of weight gain.
Many of us emotional eat on a regular basis. When we celebrate we eat, When we are sad we eat.
Why Do We Get Bored?
You'd think with the endless hours of entertainment that is available these days we'd never get bored. But the reality is, We sometimes still do. Maybe you're sick of the game your playing; Maybe you're tired of watching TV.
So you turn to food to both satisfy taste buds and your boredom.
We get bored when we have an intense need for more mental activity or more excitement.
Our brains are constantly adapting to the world around us. When we do the same thing everyday, Our brains get better at it. We can do things faster, and more efficiently than the day we started. As a result, sometimes repetitive things become old, and our brain gets hardly any excitement from it.
Instead of eating, That's when you should break the routine. And try something new, Go on a hike, Go the library. Do something you haven't done before.
Food Releases Happy Chemicals
When we eat our brain releases serotonin, Which makes us happy. It's similar to when you do something you love, Or when people are on drugs. We crave serotonin when we get it. And food delivers! Which makes us later want to eat again.
While food is necessary for us to have energy and to live, We do not need to spend all day eating! We should eat to live, Not live to eat.
It's easy to reach for food when we want a quick "happy" boost. But this can cause addiction.
Try New Things
We have so many opportunities do try new things these days. But many of us don't. Why?
We may overthink the whole thing. Overthink going out with friends, Or trying a new activity. We are so critical of ourselves these days. By trying new things, you'll get in the habit of having fun rather than eating when you are bored.
This one is very tricky and subliminal. It's been one of the hardest habits to break! I found that it's easier to switch boredom eating with boredom drinking and drinking a ton of extra water helps suppress appetite, promotes digestion, and gives the feeling of "doing something" that boredom eating is used for. I dunno if it will help everyone, but it helps me massively!
I totally do this - I consume massive amounts of diet coke and coffee in a day.

I never sought for food when I am bored or feeling a tad sad. For me I have been smoking pot for a long time to keep myself going (through highschool). So I can relate to the feeling of a daily routine giving the need to suppress, whether it be food, physical activity or a jongo. One is healthier than the other though ^^
But like you said, it's better to free yourself by doing something different and breaking that feeling of boredom or daily routine you got stuck in.
I just finished eating and seen this post and to be honest I'm going to eat some more all because I'm feeling a little lazy and bored.
But luckily for me I don't put on weight, so that's a plus.. all my friends asks me to switch bodies with them.. haha

I swear if I eat 1 slice of pizza I gain 20 pounds.
I drink a lot of water when I am bored, don't eat much as I have already gained 10 KG in the last 5 months
Drinking plenty of water helps in weight loss without doing any workout.

Yes, I noticed that when it gets boring or nothing to do, immediately the hand reaches for food. We must fight it!

I call my friends and have a hangover, or if anybody isn't available I hangout with my kid to make sure that i keep myself involved in some activity otherwise it's hard to not eat when you have nothing to do. I will try the strategies you mentioned in the post whenever I ain't having company. Must work for me then. Thanks you for sharing. :)

I find myself "guilty" of this little thing, I eat when I'm bored. There's something fun when eating something and watching things online, like a video on YouTube.
I guess the only good part is that I don't gain any weight no matter how much I eat, but I realized that eating all the time is not always good, so I started changing things.
One thing people could do is to never eat enough to get completely full, and eat whenever they are hungry instead, just enough for the hunger to go away. This way they make sure they don't get hungry, and they can also keep eating all day for their brain to release serotonin.
This is a "problem" that could be solved in all kind of ways. It's not even about weight, it's about your health. Sometimes when we want a snack or something we go for something unhealthy, and that's not good.
I really believe that with a little bit of control we can change the way we eat and what we eat, and we can live a healthier life :)

I am fond of eating junk foods and this bad habit I have. I used to eat lots lots of chocolate when I feel board but Now I am gaining weight which is not good. I will definately try the above.
My gym instructor told to take plants of water and if feel very hungry take some green veggies or fruit or egg white.which helping me lot.

I have a tendency to get up at 4 in the morning and snack on something in the kitchen before heading off to bed again. My grandpa does the same thing, so I blame him for this bad habit...
It seems that the problem of eating generally backfires on a beautiful woman like you, I once commented on the other place, if you do not have to hold on to your appetite, it's best for me to eat what you like, but you need to remember "eat before you are hungry and Stop before you are full" there is one more "meal a little but often". I think that literally all of my weight gain is from eating while I'm bored which I think I've realized to a degree for awhile but this article kind of brings it home for me. I need to learn to replace the desire to eat something yummy when I'm bored or not doing much with a desire to get up and be active. After years of making it a habit it's a really tough one to break that's for sure. It also doesn't help that food is one of my favorite things in life, I'm lucky I'm not bigger than I am currently!
Yes, just keep busy cause when you keep busy you won't eat till you think about it. Also if you fast then you won't eat at all until you break-fast.

I eat when I'm stressed, not bored.
Over eating can cause more than just weight issues. Over eating impairs the liver's ability to do its job properly. When the live can't do its job properly then toxins build up in your body causing other health issues.
Like you point out in your article @kaylinart, there is a bio-feedback between stomach and brain. Our moods can thus also affect our eating habits, and our eating habits re-enforce our moods, and thus we end up in a vicious circle destined for trouble.
Try to snack on healthy, low calorie foods like watermelon, grapes, carrots, etc. :)
