Damn Drunk Driver and a Scooter (We are OK!!)

I was very excited about my return to steemit today! We woke up feeling great, the sun was shining, and @briancourteau was in a poetic mood, so he wrote this beautiful poem for me; A poem to my best friend while we fight my cancer; just when I thought I knew what was in his heart, he surprised me with his poetic sentiments. I was going to write a post about our new apartment ... Above is a quick photo of a fraction of our new patio ... it really is an unbelievable place, but....yes, I know, you're all sensing a "but"!

We decided to make a quick run to the store to find a sushi mat because we were going to make sushi later in the afternoon. When we came out of the store, it was pouring rain, so we waited it out a bit and decided when it had slowed down, to just slowly make our way home, because the roads get pretty slippery here after a rain.

On the way, we stopped at our favorite rotisserie chicken take out spot and off we went. By then, the rain had completely stopped, the sun was coming out, but the roads were still slick. Not even one block from the restaurant, a taxi driver decided to make an illegal u-turn, facing the wrong way, and directly in front of us decided to stop. Brian went to go around him, figuring it was safer than slamming on the breaks. Just then, the driver thought it made more sense to back up, and we had no choice ... Brian hit the breaks, I could feel the rear tire slipping, and before we knew it, we were on our sides, sliding towards the taxi.

Thankfully, we weren't yet going that fast, but fast enough to be bruised, swollen and damn sore. A nice man who owned the flower shop saw it all happen, along with a few other shop owners near by. One of them grabbed me a chair, and Brian went to get me water because my leg and foot were skinned, bleeding and swelling, but before I knew it, I'd fainted and smashed my head on the cement lip of the flower shop; my head has a nice throbbing goose egg still and it's looks as though I've been punched in the eye. Brian's groin and hip is killing him, but overall, we'll live to tell this tale again and again.

An hour or so ago, the Tourist Police phoned us to say that the driver had blown over the legal alcohol limit, and they'd accessed the damage at 20,000 pesos , about $1000 US, and that the driver was in jail pending payout. They do work fast here for some things. The officer just said to Brian on the phone, "we are a tourist destination here"; I guess he wanted us to know that we'd be taken care of.

So, once again, I'm writing a post to fill everyone in, but I know I won't be on here tonight, and we'll just have to see how this old bag of bones feels in the morning :)

To all of you who commented on my last post about moving, I'm so so sorry, but I just realized that I totally forgot to reply to your comments! I feel terrible about that kind of thing, but I want you all to know that I read your comments and really appreciated all of your well wishes!! It surprises me still how many of you actually care and comment on the life and times of Brian and I :) <3<3 Thank you ;)

Oh don't even worry about comments. My sp is low so call it even
Just glad you are both alright.
Rest up Steemit will be here I'm sure.

Thank you @headchange! This is what I just replied to simplymike, and the exact same goes for you:

There's certain people, like yourself, that I know will totally understand if I don't reply or do so many days down the road. Thank you for that!! :)

It is cause we just love you any way 💞 Besides I know I am going to do the same exact thing at times lol

Good heavens... that's HORRIBLE, and coming right on top of moving! I'm just grateful that you're both OK, and that things to seem to have been handled quickly. I just pray that you don't get sore... take it very easy for a couple of days, sometimes these things have a way of taking a little while to manifest. Anyway, prayers and healing to you both!

=^..^=

Thank you @curatorcat! I appreciate that very much :)

sometimes these things have a way of taking a little while to manifest.

I'm thinking that's what's going on with my shoulder blade. I'm right handed and chalked it up to using my computer mouse/typing etc, and I've started swimming a lot again because our new place has a pool, but I'm thinking I'll need some physio or a chiro sometime soon. Brian's groin is messed up, but other than that, Limpy and the Hunchback here are just fine haha

any post that involves a drunk driver and a scooter isn't going to end well :( Glad you are both ok. We are all wishing you well.

That's it exactly!! There's nothing between me and the road; and I saw that the whole thing was going to happen and I just had to sit there and let it!

Thank you though, we are healing well. A little stiff still, but soon the cuts and bruises will be no more :)

Did you recently hit 60 rep by the way?! :)

Yes on 60 :) thanks for noticing

Don't worry about replies. I'm just glad you are both OK!

Thank you @simplymike :) There's certain people, like yourself, that I know will totally understand if I don't reply or do so many days down the road. Thank you for that!! :)

It was scary, but we are both ok. I was on the scooter once since, and have to admit that I was terrified! It's just not the same anymore :(

That's crazy! So scary when moments just go out of control without notice like that. Glad everyone is going to be okay!

Thank you so much @dinoromanelli! That's it exactly ... that feeling of being "out of control" ... I could see it was going to happen, and there wasn't a thing I could do about it. Plus, being on a scooter, there's absolutely nothing between me and the road. Terrifying actually!

Life coming at you...really fast. I totally get that!

uh oh! Sounds like you know that from experience?!

Thankfully...not first hand experience. But out of control is definitely one of my least favorite things! :)

Wow I am glad you are okay. Sorry that happened to you. Take care.

I appreciate that @stever82! We're healing up nicely, but a little stiff and sore still. Skin meets road. Not pretty :) Thanks again !!

Ohh no what a terrible thing to happen, rest up and take care, WOW the police and legal system work quick there

Thank you @tattoodjay! And yes, there's no messing around here, especially if "tourists" are involved. We've also received phone calls from the head honcho of the taxi union and again from the police explaining the whole process. Apparently they (police) with our receipts tell the driver what he owes us, they tack on whatever they deem necessary based on our physical injuries at the scene, and then check in with us in a few weeks to see if the driver has paid. If not, he's hauled back to jail. It all comes down to compensation and because money is pretty tight for a lot of folks here, the thought is that having to give up their pay is deterrent enough to not drink and drive.

I guess tourism is such a big thing there they have to be proactive

I’m thinking maybe ‘welcome to the neighborhood’ would’ve just been too soft maybe??

But I’d probably take a couple bruises straight over to a regulated exchange and trade em for a patio like that, dang!! That’s a good deal ya’all got there.

hahaha right? How about a fruit basket even?! But if these scrapes and bruises mean I can sit on this patio, then yep, I'll take it :)

oh...... I'm just grateful that you're both okay.
Rest up and take care.

Thank you so much for caring @shibasaki :) I appreciate that!

You Butt heads. Running around the tropics on Daddies credit cards, like 20 year olds on spring break. We will discuss this later at home. I hope you learned your lesson.
For right now your health is more important. The doctor is in so send send me some nude pictures so I can see the bruises. and make sure there is no unseen damage by you.

I am glad you are OK. Watch Brain a little close. rest and ice. you do not go to sleep wait as long as you can. later you can use heat. If you need anything let me know.

They go out of their way for the Tourist and foreign retirement areas.

hahahaha @wolfhart! Somehow I missed this comment, especially when I could have used a good laugh LOL

We did exactly what you suggested though, and it was me that needed staying awake; the bang on my head (I fainted on the sidewalk after the accident) hurt for a few days. We're both a little stiff still, but that's mainly because we're getting old I think :)

You're right about them going out of their way for tourists too. That's exactly what the police were getting at. That's all they need is for things like this to happen and people going back home bad-mouthing the area.

Thanks for caring, and just for being you!!

ROFL

I am glad your feeling better. And you didn't do to much damage to Brain.

All that matters is that you guys are ok. It could have been so much worse. Even better the police got him off the road and amazing that they processed him so quickly.
Glad the move went well. I hope the new place is nice. The view looks nice 😃

Ditto that! You capture the first words that came to mind for me, so I don't have to. :) And you said it better.

I think you would have been just fine @carolkean. I am working really hard on not using the word 'sorry' for everything, trying to put meaning into what I say rather than just a stock answer.

I know you well enough to know that none of your answers are "stock answers" to me @tryskele. So save the over thinking and extra work for those who don't know you so well haha Rest easy with me sista :) <3

Still good practice though. :D Makes me think of a better answer than one of the 2 misued words in the English language. I'm afraid, I'll scare them off LOL.

Thank you @carolkean :) You said it perfectly too!!

Thank you @tryskele! IT's been a hell of a few days, and although the cuts and bruises are diminishing, I'm beginning to think I though something out in my shoulder blade. For example, too much computer time and I start to get a headache ... I can feel it from my right shoulder blade, up through my neck and into my head.

We may get wiser with age, but the old bod sure seems to kick up more of a fuss with time! :)

Thank you for caring!!

Hope you both feel better. Amazing the police worked so quickly. Looking forward to that post about your new apartment.

Thank you so much @toddrjohnson! There are some things that seem so backwards here, but this isn't one of them. Fingers crossed I guess!

Oh My Goodness @lynncoyle1. Make sure you take plenty of rest after all the energy you must have spent moving and now this. So pleased to hear you're both OK.

Your new balcony looks wonderful and I look forward to hearing the story of your move when you're fully recovered. In the meantime take special care of each and rest.

Sending heaps of love as always. 💙 💛 💜 💚

Thank you @gillianpearce! We are still stiff from it all, and I've got a few cuts still healing, but overall, I'd say the worst is behind us. It really was scary though!!

Oh heavens
thank heaven you're fine

Thank you @merryslamb :) I appreciate that!

I am relieved to know that you are okay, sort of. A goose egg and bumps and bruises are not nice, but all things considered, it could have been much worse. When you feel up to it and have the time, we would like to see more of the new place!

Thank you so much for your support @cicicastor :) Always appreciated!!

OMG, I'm really surprised by how many people still drink and drive. And even worse: smartphones!

Both of these items are causing quite a lot of accidents 😥

Anyways I hope both of you will recover soon. And don't worry about replying now or in a week or 2. Or not at all. Cause I don't see any necessity to reply to a comment like this one.

Well, I have to reply a little :)

I'm surprised too; and believe it or not, the guy had his wife and baby in the front seat too! I forgot to mention that in the post!

Glad you're safe. Take a good rest, forgive and forget. Everything will be fine on the next day. 😁

Thank you @legendchew! We are coming along nicely ... but it's a little harder to forget. We went on the scooter today and I was terrified of something happening again!

You guys rest up and get better. That is a beautiful poem, I think your best friend loves you...
Sending love and prayers.

awww that is so very sweet! I saw your comment on Brian's poem too :) So awesome!! Thank you.

You are most welcome. I've had one of those weeks as well, haven't touch steemit in several days.

Sometimes it's actually a nice break @coinsandchains! It's a bit of reminder of what we actually filled our time with before steemit :)

Well, it could be nice, but I was basically wallowing in pain from a back injury. I basically couldn't do anything. I finally ended up in the ER, feeling a bit better now but my leg is still completely numb. Hopefully, my appointments will go well this week, and I can get it fixed soon.

Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear that @coinsandchains! Back pain is the worse, so I hope it gets fixed soon :)

Thankfully you're both ok! Gladly the police didn't let you guys down here on getting the driver behind bars. Drinking and driving, unbelievable. I can barely drink and walk (after 1 cocktail I am all fuzzy lol) so I can't imagine getting in a car to drive at all myself. I hope the pain will get less soon, take care you both <3

Thank you @anouk.nox, and I forgot to mention it, but he had his wife and small baby in the front seat with him! Isn't that unbelievable??!!

You got to be kidding me ? And not even in a car seat????

Nope! You wouldn't believe it here; I'm not kidding when I say I've seen many families of 4 on a scooter ... with bags of groceries!

Jesus. You don't need to make up some cockamamie story about an accident to cover up your bar fight wounds. Just admit that you two had too much mezcal and decided to take out a couple of bouncers at the titty bar.

We're not here to judge.

In all seriousness, we're glad you guys are alright.

hahahaha we got such a good laugh from this @profanereviews!!! You got us; the gig is up now :)

oh no, glad you are both ok(ish). dont worry about the comments, gives us all a chance to catch up on the engagement league :-)

Thank you @paulag :)

hahaha my days out are many others "in" :)

Hey @lynncoyle1 thanks for sharing this. So thankful you and Brian are okay. I know that can be scary and a few bruises and cuts can be a pain in the butt.

Anyway, you provide really great Content , and because of this I wanted to let you know you are a dolphin.gif
Congrats :)

Don't know what the Dolphin Support Initiative is ?? Check it out (https://steemit.com/dolphinsupportinitiative/@robertandrew/dolphin-support-initiative-i-am-implementing-this-and-you-are-probably-asking-what-the-hell-it-is?sort=trending)

Thank you so much @robertandrew! That's from both of us; Brian says hi too :) I also want to thank you for upvoting so many comments here; wow!! That was so awesome of you to do ... I never seem to have enough voting power to do it :) And thank you for the "dolphin support" too!! Wow you are just full of surprises today, and I totally appreciate them all!

So honored to be able to do that for you and Brian. YEah the Dolphin support was something I just dearly wanted to do if I could get to that position. It just irked me to see Steemians in the past holding so much SP and holding BIG VP over 95%. So when I was sitting at a meager 60 SP for months I made a Vow to myself if I ever got to Dolphin or Whale status I would buck the Trend of all this miserly crap and just give, give, give . It's just such a Joy especially to those who need it :)

Well then thank you so much for the gift in my wallet @robertandrew!! I'm with you and can't wait until I'm able to do the same; I hate seeing the rich and miserly hoarding their votes and SP!! But for now, I "give" with my words :)

Thank you again for the steem; it was a lovely surprise!!

I'm really sorry to hear that happened. I hate it when one person's stupidity affects others like that. Because the guy was selfish and driving drunk you and Brian have to suffer. That makes me mad. Hopefully they'll be able to make him pay for the damages, plus more for pain and suffering. At least the police were on top of it right away.

I hope you both get better soon. Take the time you need to rest and recuperate. We'll be here when you get back.

Thank you @themanwithnoname ! I forgot to mention this in the post, but his wife was in the front seat, holding her baby in her lap too!!! How awful is that??!

Apparently the police check in with us "later" to see if he's paid, and if not, they haul him off to jail again. Interesting system they have here, that's for sure!

Thanks again for the caring and support!

He had a baby in the car?! What? I don't know that guy's life, but something has to be going on for him to be acting like that.

I hope you're able to get the money soon!

You have no idea how many families of three, four and even five I see squeezed onto a scooter, never mind the lack of car seats etc in a car. In fact, I've never seen a car seat here; babies and kids are always on their parents' laps.

I watched a dad once pile his two girls, one so little I had to help lift her onto the scooter in front of him, with the second girl behind him trying to hold onto a 24 pack of toilet paper, while the one in front held on to some other groceries. It was night time too!! but he just put on his hazards and away they went! It really is crazy!!!

The police and head of the taxi union phoned us and said if the guy didn't pay us within the next couple of weeks, we're to let them know and they'll haul him off to jail again :)

Wait, people seriously put five people on one scooter? I can't imagine that's good for the scooter! Heh.

In fact, I've never seen a car seat here

I guess that's one way to determine who survives to adulthood. If your parents don't drop you while driving, you get to live.

That's so scary that people would ride like that while it's night time. And with two kids! Wouldn't it be safer to leave them at home unsupervised than to take them out on the scooter?

Well, hopefully he pays you and there aren't any issues beyond that. Meet in public places if you have to see him. Does he even have the money, or is he just going to go to jail over and over and keep getting poorer every time?

Rest up and look after yourselves.

Thank you @sparkesy43! We've taken it easy the last few days and are feeling pretty good now!

Oh no shame that's awful. Hope you both feel better soon ❤

Thank you very much @jusipassetti! I really appreciate that :)

Glad you are ok! Hope you both get to feeling better soon. That patio looks like a great place to relax and write Steemit posts!

Thank you so much @ambiguity! We're still a little stiff, but all things considered, we're just fine :)

Man I am holding my legs for some reasons!!! Rest well the both of you it sucks balls but I am happy to hear that you guys seems ok, minus the bruises.
It happened to me once falling of a scooter, and it's always worse after a heavy rain as the water start evaporating and mix with the oil, and then it's slippery af you can slide on forever.
I wish you the best, try to chill for you days on the beach!

Thank you @edprivat! You're so right about it being slippery too!

SO happy you guys ok and in a brand new home!!! :D

Thank you @edprivat!! I am too :)

Goodness sakes @lynncoyle1!! Glad you and Brian escaped with relatively minor injuries and you lived "to tell the tale." Just don't let it happen again! 🤨🙏😊

On a lighter note, not to worry about the replies. You have a "lot on your plate!" Besides, I'm starting to get more replies / comments and I truly don't how you, @janton, and @ecoinstant keep up with it - vying for the Title. You all have my respect for what you do!

Here's to a quick and full recovery, until we "meet" again!

Posted using Partiko Android

Thank you @rolerob! We are still a little stiff, but overall, ok. I never want that to happen again! Truthfully, we were back on the scooter for a little bit yesterday, and I was completely terrified! My mind and body just could not relax, so I'm not sure how long it will be before I'm comfortable again on it. I feel badly because Brian loves it and it's really helps with his mobility.

Yes, the replies/comments sometimes becomes a bit overwhelming! Thank you for your understanding @roleerob :)

I love how you open this with all the good things you were going to launch with, and then this drunk driver put a new spin on your story. The outcome could have been so much worse, though I usually take little comfort in thinking that way. You got a riveting new story to tell, anyway, and you tell it well! Please tell me you're writing fiction. You're a natural!

Aww thank you @carolkean! I was actually a high school English teacher for most of my adult life, and have written fiction here and there, but it's something I continue to play around with. It seems as though my life at the moment is enough fodder for writing at the moment, that there's no need for fiction haha

Ahhh, that explains it - you write so well, it's no surprise you taught high school English! I know what you mean: real life can keep one too busy or too fulfilled or too content to write fiction. It seems to me that a certain unrest, or an outrage, or anger, or passion, is necessary to get one to sit down and put words on paper when there's no class, no grade, as the incentive. "No need for fiction" - to me, that is a sign of someone who is living well and is well adjusted, not someone lacking in imagination. That said, I'd love to see more of your writing!

"No need for fiction" - to me, that is a sign of someone who is living well and is well adjusted, not someone lacking in imagination.

You're very perceptive :) One day I'll write more fiction I think; it's something that's been hovering around me my entire life :)

Thank you @carolkean!!

I hope you do write more fiction. You're a natural at writing! You might want to check out this post:
