Now that I got you here with a little clickbait, lets talk about why I want to get you dirty today!
Just like in life, dirt is everywhere here on Steemit. Many times this dirt is in the form of tiny particles called dust. Dust can't be stopped but can be controlled, and that is true in life as well as on Steemit.
Steemit Dust Is Better
But one thing is different about the dust on Steemit, our dust can be collected and transformed into gold. Our dust doesn't have to be swept away and discarded, our dust has real value.
Its True, And I'm Going To Prove It With This Post
Here's how: First, I'm going to sprinkle dust on every legitimate comment on this post. Every comment, and every comment to a comment. I'm spreading as much dust as my voting power will allow. You're going to think I'm Tinkerbell by the time I'm done showing you how great dust can be! So comment away, please!!!
Transform That Dust To Gold
Now that I've given you dust, I'm going to show you how to turn it into gold. I'm inviting you to sign up with the coolest new service on Steemit created called @dustsweeper to transform that dust into real money. (ps. I know its the coolest because I teamed up with Steem Witness @danielsaori to create this and it really works!)
Its simple, its fast, and within 7 days you will see exactly how it works. Right before your eyes you will see that the $0.01 dustvote I'm giving you today will be paid to you finally for the first time ever.
How? Simple. By using @dustsweeper you will deposit a small sum of sbd and that will automatically create an account for you. Then @dustsweeper will look through your feed for any post or comment in the 5th and 6th day that is less than $0.0249 or less. (Note: these are the ones you are in danger on not getting paid on and will show $0.00, $0.01, or $0.02)
Once @dustsweeper finds the dust, it will take a small amount of your sbd on balance ($0.014 for instance) and upvote that post 2x (or $0.028) to make your sbd stick to the dust and then both can be claimed on payout. Think of dustsweeper as a machine that precisely turns your own money into a dust magnet!

Hopefully we don't need @dustsweeper as much in the future. We really should lower the threshold probably down to .01. I heard it might change at the next fork. Hopefully it does.
The conversations I heard about it changing @mysearchisover were about it going the other way.
The information about the dust threshold first started doing the rounds after one of the witnesses (can't remember which one) suggested that it should possibly rise to as high as 0.05c in an attempt to combat spam.
What that really demonstrated for me was just how out of touch a lot of the people who joined in the early days are, with what it's really like if you're joining now.
Too may of the witnesses really haven't got a clue about such things, in my opinion.

the dust in room, was becoming quite gloom.
he purchased a a broom, yes a magical broom.
He took to the dust, like a magpie to crust,
Swept a pile here, and a pile there.
Then with that magic broom of his, all the dust stayed in the air.
It did not go poof and up in smoke, it settle back down and no one was broke.
So on day five or maybe day six, the little dust mote grew to a good vote.

Yep. It seems like magic to me because even with @davemccoy's expanation of how it works I still can't really get my head around it.
My brain just doesn't seem to manage the nuance of numbers. it's like the bots. i was using one Dave recommended back in the day and assumed that because I appeared to be getting back more than I paid I was making a profit.
Then along came a friend who understands all this stuff and worked out that I was in fact making a loss.
If i pay $1 and $1.20 back my brain just simply says I've made a profit. it's all a bit complicated I find. Great reason for not using bots though! 😁

Thank you. I wanted to just say thanks for all the work. The lifted dust vote does not just give me a reward, it allow those people that have no real vote power to get a reward even if it is the smallest curation award available, they now get that $0.001 vote. So if they vote on dust protected people they will at the end of the day get $0.010 and end of week $0.070. It does add up for them. I really like this initiative. And it has really help me get some additional SP into my account. So when you need that SP you delegated me back, I am safe now even with the 30SP I have delegated out I will still be over the 500SP level. I am upto 565SP of my own.

As you've probably heard, my comments tend to come with extra CL, so hopefully, in your calculations, you're accounting for that. :)
I suppose, though, scammers aren't particularly concerned about the comment length or the content, so it probably makes no difference. Still I'm excited to be a benchmark of some kind.

Fast-Reply is pretty awesome Dave. All your comments lined up for upvote/reply and there's an option for mentions so you can have them all in one list to get to. I'm sure your scrollbar would be tiny with your long list lol. But it's definitely a time-saver.

Cool! This project is really a great deal. I see a lot of comments that they're disappointed with their measly votes and some commenting it's the thought that counts.

I think so too! Then after a while the dust votes won't matter anymore and the engagement will come first. I'm hoping it will come to that point. @davemccoy a couple things (btw you can thank lynn for calling me over...lol), but wanted to start with this one:
Where are you pulling the data from? I'm hoping your using a live vote value vs the posted value as it changes with not only the value of steem but also based on how the pool is manipulated by last minute massive votes from those like mr TA gives himself.
Then on the same lines. If for some reason someone paid for a vote and it still got dusted what is your policy on that?
Then the math of things doesn't support a 2x ROI being profitable. From the numbers I've run in the past it's no less then 210% and many times needs to be 225% on comments as it's a straight 25% curation hit you take vs on posts you can keep that lower due to early votes.
Hi, just to fill in about the vote value. We are using the up to date value at the time of the vote.
If there would be a sharp price drop in the last day, it could happen that the value would still go below the threshold before payout, but it is not very likely as we are voting with an average $0.028.
I'll let @danielsaori handle the where he gets the data from, he is the expert on that...
On the math, you have to realize that the profitability changes with the price of steem... at $3 value of steem if you do the math, the breakeven after curation is roughly 1.9x... this changes all the time. You have to do the calculation at various steem prices and you will see what I mean.
On the other point, if someone pays for a vote and for some reason it still gets dusted (its happened 8 times in roughly 4000 votes) then the full value gets refunded to the user. So this is not an issue at all.
So glad you're on it @davemccoy. I don't have a hope in hell of working all that out! 😍

you should try it out @sinlg... It does work and will pick up those pennies we all miss... you can start small too... just send in $0.25 sbd and that will get you about 17 or so votes

@sinlg if you sent $2, then you would get $4 worth of upvotes... if you want to check the easiest thing to do is send in a small amount (like $0.05 sbd) and it will give you a new current balance!

Yeah. The newbie thing can get a bit confusing @antimetica.
There will often be contests for newbies that I'm surprised I can still enter since I've been here 6 months. But often entry is dependent on your reputation or Steem Power and that's what gets me in.
There have been a couple of times recently when people have said to me "oh. When you're as small as you are it's fine to self vote".
That's a bit of a wake up call since I've worked really hard to get where I am but am obviously suffering from delusions of grandeur! 😂
It felt like a huge milestone to get to 500 steem power but, in truth, it doesn't really equal much power at all. Still good to have though! 😁

Hey @karamyog, first nice to meet you! Very good comment, I can see why you will make money in comments. And just so you know, you can put in less that the 1 sbd, you could put in $0.25 sbd if you wanted... The reason we used 1 sbd so that you don't always have to reload... But since you get your money back in a couple days, then you could put smaller amounts in and its not a problem.
Also I want you to know that I was exactly the same way. I made far more money in comments than I have made in posts. People appreciate comments, especially good ones! So keep it up! I’ve been with @dustsweeper for a very short time, but have already had my dust swept. Thanks! Question, when, what, has to happen inorder to stop making dust? Are there targets to aim for? Guess thats 2 questions.
Awesome that you are using it @electricswine! And to stop making it, then they would have to stop making votes less that the threshold... So you would get no votes until your vote was worth more than the current $0.0200... The only other way to eliminate it would be to lower the threshold ... Neither of those are likely to happen in the short run. The reason they did it this way is they though they would have lots of spam they are paying for... But if you are a real person, it is a steep price to pay to not have your vote counted for the first 3 or 4 months. (unless you buy steem or are a star coming in)
I don't think there is a target right now... But given the support of this program, they might give it some thought in the future.

To answer your question, you can either buy Steem and turn it into SP or you can lease the SP with your account... People do both and it depends as to which suits you the best... I am always happy to answer though, so don't hesistate to keep asking ;)
Having personally used this service, I can tell you that @dustsweeper is worth it! It has helped turn many of my 1-2 cent posts/comments into payable SBD/SP.
Remember, many a little becomes a mickle!

2 places that I see them... One is in the newbieresteem server on discord (sometimes on our tag #newbieresteemday but mostly in the server)... and the other is at @greetersguild... they look for them and have many contests to find them... They also have a discord server and the members put the newbies links in a special page so people can go great them.

Hey @neddykelly! It won't take any of your money until there is a vote... So if you have no dust, then there will be not vote and your balance will stay the same. So don't worry, every one of your votes will count and you will only spend the balance when you have dust appear... If you want me to show you on your steemworld, I will be happy to walk you through it!

Nice! Had a bit of a browse around and thank you for offering advice around steemit. I really appreciate that. I am having trouble using steem world to navigate the stats or atleast find where dust sweeper has left the trail. Also can we ping the bot on a discord server with a balance of what credit we have left

That is happening soon... Daniel has that on the update to do... And I checked your steemworld, you haven't been hit yet.. You don't have much dust in there, but you will get it on in 7 days when these comments start coming up... Whatever you originally sent in should be your balance, because there is no charge to sign up, its like a deposit account waiting for dust to upvote.
No worries I've transferred 1 sbd so will wait till I get an alert that I'm low. I do like that feature
yes... it is for everyone really... It is something that will make sure that if you have any votes on comments (or posts) that are 0.02 0.01 or 0.00, that you will get them counted and thus paid on... if you don't think you have many, just send like $0.25 and that will cover your first roughly 20 votes... you can always get your money back if you have no votes, but I'd be shocked if you don't have a bunch that slide through and have turned to dust already. Most people are surprised when they see @dustsweeper casting votes for them.
You said we can post about anything here @davemccoy so I have a question for you that I'm sure will be useful to others as well.
We have a setting in our accounts to receive payment as either 50/50 SBD/SP or power up 100%.
There was some discussion earlier in the year about whether or not we should be switching to power up 100%. Maybe it was when the price of Steem went down or perhaps when there was parity. I'm not sure.
But since the SBD to Steem ratio is the worse is been the whole time I've been on the platform I'm wondering if anything has changed or whether 50/50 is still the way to go.

still 50/50 is the way to go... there will be a point, but I think it will only be when steem is below a dollar... So since people think that is unlikely to happen, then probably 50/50 for awhile :)

So here's another question . . . why was it that for a short time we actually got paid in Steem? And what would need to happen for that to happen again? 😊
yes that is exactly right... the drop below $2 brought up the discussion!
And the reason we got paid in steem was because the value of SBD's relative to steem were too high (SBDs were worth more than the systems wants them to be), so the result was to fix it, they paid less in sbds and gave out liquid steem in its place... We won't have that problem at this point as the price of steem is far higher than sbds.
Oh that's a shame @davemccoy. I liked being paid in Steem but that doesn't mean it was actually a better deal.
As I've mentioned before if my brain sees a higher number it thinks that's good thing and I know around here that isn't necessarily true.
It looks like the SBD to Steem ratio is getting better again though. I haven't changed my SBD into Steem for a while now as I've been waiting for it to go back to a 1:1 ratio.
Seems it's moving in the right direction as the price of Steem drops but, as we know, that could all so easily change tomorrow! 😊
I'm with you on waiting... and 2 easy things to remember, first is the lowest sbds should go (for any period of time) is $1 as they are "pegged" to that price... and 2 if steem goes below $1, that ratio will definitely flip the other way... If steem was back to $0.50 then you would get 2 steem for every sbd.
Yeah. I remember when I first joined I think I got 1.50 Steem or maybe it was more but once that ended I just started using 1 Steem as my bench mark.
But it's been a while now for that to be reached.
I just noticed that I just got paid some Steem on my posts so the ratios must have shifted again.

think of it like this... you have a full penny lying around...
if you do nothing, that penny disappears.
if you add your own sbd (through @dustsweeper), then you will get back a) your own money on payout since the rate is breakeven and b) you will get paid your percentage of that penny... (even though its small)...
So if you pick up 100 pennies that were going to turn to dust, that is like getting an extra $1.00 upvote. It will add up for sure based on the amount of convos you have.

I imagine this wouldn't happen too often since the comments being upvoted, before the account were disabled, were on this post and there were more of them than I would normally leave.

And, what happens now, does dust sweeper go back to the last comment it was working on or does it restart itself from when it was replenished?
