Like most I get paid to do a job. I'm on a salary meaning I have a fixed amount of income annually, plus a car allowance, which gets paid fortnightly. I also have a commission-structure that pays me once annually, if I exceed my annual budget. Like most I wish I earned a lot more but, in the main, I'm reasonably content with what I earn once my annual salary, car allowance and commission bonus is paid.
I've never failed to exceed my annual budget each financial year and, in fact, normally exceed it by double figures; I work hard at it and am good at what I do.
In the last Australian financial year which ran from 1 July 2019 to 30 June 2020, I managed to meet my annual budget in about the middle of March 2020 so, in a normal year would have three months to smash it out of the park to the end of June which all works towards my annual commission payment. That what's happened on other years and I'be been paid accordingly. But this year wasn't really normal was it? We have this little thing called COVID-19 which has buggered everything up in a major way.
COVID-19 threw a spanner in the works as far as my business goes from about March and so the final months of the financial year were not as productive and fruitful as I would have liked. Yes, I exceeded my budget by more than I exceeded it in the previous financial year, but I think, due to the COVID situation, I'll not receive as much as I should because the company will probably dick me. (Yes, that's to official term).
The company will cite COVID-business-pressures as the reason for lower revenue all around, that's the indication I have. It kind of sucks really as it's just an excuse. I know the business's figures and know they have not been too bad, a little lower yes, but not super-low. It will be interesting to see how it works out.
I have a meeting with the Directors on Wednesday this week in which we will analyse my year and I've spent the last few days working on my presentation. Everything looks pretty good, my figures and statistics, and I am happy with the year overall however I have a bad feeling they will still try and hold money back. That will piss me off as I have worked so hard over the financial year to achieve the results I have attained.
I have heard of so many people being cheated out of money by their company lately; They seem to feel COVID is a legitimate excuse to fail to pay people bonuses and commissions, change work situations that disadvantage workers and force people to work when on furlough or reduced hours and pay scenarios. I was only talking with my brother @tarazkp tonight about this very thing. He's currently on leave but having to work to keep up with the demands of the job and his company is getting away with it, like many others, simply because COVID. It's shit. (Yes, that's my professional opinion.)
I'm not sure how things will go for me Wednesday; I'll either be happy or not, however what I do know is that many companies have handled this COVID situation poorly and, in time, it will cost them good people as they will leave seeking employment elsewhere when opportunities arise; I know of many people looking into exit-plans and rethinking their feeling of security at their current workplaces. I think that's smart as I do not believe we have seen the true impact and financial woes that COVID will bring.
So, tell me y'all...How have you guys been coping with it? Have you been subjected to some of this sort of behaviour at your workplace? Have you been stood-down, furloughed, fired or had reduced hours and pay? How has it affected you and how do you feel things will go moving forward?

I'm currently on leave and go back at the start of next week. Will be interesting to see what chaos awaits me upon my return.
Good luck tomorrow. :) (I can say that because its Tuesday now...)
My sleep pattern is ruined.
Maybe we could catch up Friday for a coffee before you go back?
Not had any impact so far, but there is always rumors of a restructuring ( means staff reductions).
Hope they don’t make you grab your ankles on Wednesday mate.
Lol, we'll see how it goes. I've performed well above expectation so it will be hard for them to fuck me over.
I was actually retrenched in April, so surviving have been more like a miracle. The lockdown continues here in South Africa.
The company now intends to use me as a subcontractor, last week was the first time I worked since April I was offered very little to do the project which is now completed last Friday.
Now seating at home and hoping for another job to come up. It is just one big fat mess with Covid you know.
I hope it goes well for you on Wednesday.

Yeah I recall your predicament. Sucks ass. There are many people worse off than I am of course, but my situation is personal to me, I live it, and so it takes priority. I've heard so many bad stories though and what I hate to hear is when companies take advantage of the situation and treat staff poorly. They seem to be have no conscience. I hope things pick up for you, and everyone else, soon.

In the midst of it all I remain hopeful, I kind of have that believe it will pan out good, I don't how. As for the employers taking advantage of the situation life's experience have showed me what you give is what you get back out of...

Yes,agreed. Life has a way of coming back at a person and biting hard. Karma, they call it I think.
I do remember them calling it Karma lol!

tokens.Good luck with the upcoming job. For me, I am still in uni though I shouldn't. I feel for people age 23 and below who are fresh graduates, this covid-19 will make many of us unemployed for a while and even dragged several years since we'll be competing with the previous employee who are laid off. I am slightly relieved that many people my age are now making money via youtube or some other means. I think that'll save my generation and below for a while before we go into a traditional office job. Though, I personally hope people embrace remote work culture except the obvious one like construction and well, medical field.
Thanks @macchiata I appreciate it, I hope you finally finish you versity. Most ways of earning a living is going to be online going forward by the look of things.
Working remotely is on the rise due to the pandemic, I am a field worker so I don't fit that category unless I career...

ah, I see ! yeah some are still offline but construction will still go far. Good luck and cheers.
Cheers @macchiata 🙂
All my travel plans for around Australia have been flushed down the the toilet so to speak. Got all setup for it after working hard to make it happen for two year's. To say I am unhappy is putting it very very lightly 😠
Yeah...So many have had their lives thrown into turmoil for many different reasons. All we can do is deal with it but it sucks that we have to.
Indeed deal with it and make the best of the situation for sure.
All the while I want to throttle someone! 😂
It is ridiculous, but at the same time, there is no real way to complain. For me, to do what I need to do takes time and preparation, which isn't possible to do in the spaces I have available when I get paid.
Yep...And they know it. They're happy to pay you less to do the same amount of work.
I am somewhat lucky at least as part of what I am losing is paid in share options - not quite liquid at this point though.
Yeah, it's something and maybe in the future it could be a boon. Hopefully.
Furloughed since mid-march and loving it!
Time cannot be bought and whilst the 20% salary reduction has meant I have nothing to put away (or buy HIVE with), the time off to Hive/Holiday/Workout/Ride my bike has been great.
I haven't minded my reduced hours either to be honest...It's the not paying me properly thing that sucks. Still, we'll have to wait and see what happened Wednesday. I'll either be smiling or hopping mad.
Yeah, you've already achieved what was expected and more and so take a can of whoop-ass along with the presentation just in case.
I'm a freelance so basically working on new business models to face the new situation. Not easy, but challenging.
Some haven't been affected by the situation at all. I have a friend who has thrived...And yet so many have been affected, and will be moving forward. It sounds like you have an interesting job.
It is not easy but I have been reinventing myself for the past 10 years. This country depends from tourism which is the first GPD contributor and now many business are struggling but there are also opportunities. Working on a blockchain-based voting solution for dApp associations to manage their governance.
I hope it works out for you, and all of us really.
Concerts are cancelled all over the place, and as a freelancer I was 'supposed' to have a year's buffer stashed away somewhere. Plus, there are people who treat the cultural sector as a 'hobby' so there is very little in the way of support...
Despite a of this, I pull my weight and understand the necessity of these hardships for the good of society in general (and so it galls me when others put their own personal interests first). Plus, I have no issue at targeted subsidies and government help towards other sectors as people are hurting... But I wish people would have less animosity towards our sector.
Anyway, we survive.. Our expenses are low and the loss of income is painful but not (yet) crippling. It is a painful topic that affects different people in different ways and degrees...
In hindsight it'll be easier to determine what was a good idea and what was not I guess. I think there will be a few issues identified. I don't like people having a go at others for grants or stimulus packages or for judging other people's situations; Each of our issues are our own and as such are important to the individual. It's a time to pull in the same direction, not opposing.
Thanks for your comment and I hope things pick up for you, and all of us, soon.
Exactly, that is why I don't have any problem with other sectors getting timely help. I wish that was a sentiment that was more widely shared though!
People are unsure and probably thinking little about others at the moment. I guess I don't blame them but I can't help but recall the phrase, if you have nothing good to say then don't say anything. Many more people should practice that.
Too true, best of luck for the meeting!
You'll know it's bad if they hand you a jar of Vaseline on your way into the meeting.
Around here, some companies seem to be doing the right thing by their employees, and some seem to be doing the right thing for their stockholders. Which also seem to be mutually exclusive. I guess the primary difference being whether the company looks toward the long term or the short term.
Here's hoping you work for a company that can look five or ten years forward instead of 5 or 10 months.
I'll remember that, about the Vaseline I mean. Maybe I'll bring those compromising photos I found on line of the Director to motivate him a little more to lean it all in my favour.
Can't hurt. You just as well use the pictures now, you may be somewhere else next year....
Lol, true that.
Hey Galen :) Still no job for me.. 9 month's behind with my undergrad Graduation :l dont know when the uni will open so stuck at home for now.. Though ive been studying a little. Drowning my sorrows with books..in hopes of learning new things and attaining new skills.. Trying to learn portfolio investment for now.
I hope Wednesday goes well for you.. Good luck mate:)
It's a thought time for so many people. My situation is not as bad as some and worse than others, but to each of us our situation is unique. I hope things pick up for you soon.
Yes. My company dicked me 2 years in a row now along with all IT staff and less than half bonus. 1st year I hadn't been there long enough. Ok, understand that one although bonus was a key portion of my benefits package to take the job. Last year the claim was profits were down, less than half bonus. Yet they still had enough to donate millions of dollars to this fund or that fund. Now, we will see with the Covid BS. They already cut promotion plans out for the year, which I was also promised last year. I think we'll find out in another couple months, but already putting my ear to the ground. I suppose still lucky to have a job, but we've been working 80+ hour weeks since the whole Covid thing started, just now getting back down to a norm of 50-60. I'm pretty burnt out at this point and just need some more years to pay house down so we can retire.
The better you're out and autonomous the better K. I have a long way to go for that though, but I hope you can escape soon. Relying on others sucks.
Businesses are out there doing what they have to to stay afloat, I understand...But there's others that have not been affected so much using the COVID excuse to dick employees also. Here at least anyway. As a former business-owner (property industry) I understand that hard decisions need to be made at times. My wife had to make them in her business she runs now for us. But if they are avoidable then don't make them...Many here are doing things they do not need to giving them the chance to increase profit but paying less and dropping staff.
You are a very hard working person and a lot of people do use Covid as an excuse. Lack of morals and ethics. Injustice is not easy to cope with, especially if you know you did your best job. The covid doesn't justify to cut down pay from deserving people. I think that the outcome will reveal you some true faces and will give you important information to hold for the future.
I agree, the meeting, and how they handle my commission payments, is going to be very telling and will have a bearing upon how I move forward in the future. Yes, I work hard when I'm at my job...I do the same in my personal life too. Applying effort comes naturally to me.
I do hope they will give you what you deserve!
We'll see. I hope so too.
😊💪💪🍀
Since March Covid-19 has changed our lives by forcing us to walk on our heads, one experience is sadder and more alarming than another.
My daughter is a high performance swimmer, she has been training for 3 months, doing double training, to compete representing Venezuela in the National Open Water Games and without warning one day she must understand that it is all over.
Good luck on Wednesday. I wish that it is not necessary that you require petroleum jelly.
You raise a good point...All of those people whose purpose has been ended; Be it sport, creative, social or any other thing...Simple having it cut off so abruptly can give rise to emotional issues. I hope she can get back to it.
I'm struggling to get her out of a depressed state for such a sudden life change.
Yes, that's one of the big concerns. I hope you manage to break her out of it. Do you have government assistance there for this type of situation?
No. We have only followed some advice from very close specialists.
Ok...Well, I hope she feels a little more positive moving forward and things start to improve.
Thank you
Hope your Wednesday goes as well as it can.
Fingers crossed, although that won't help me much.Makes me feel better though. :)

I'm fortunate to be working in an essential industry in a role which only a very small number of people in the company are trained to do, so I've had no real impact other than having to work from home more than in the office. I do, however, anticipate that our annual bonus conversations will be around smaller numbers than in recent years with Covid-19 wearing a significant amount of the blame.
I saw the government has made some changes to JobKeeper beyond September indicating that this scenario is going to keep playing out. It will be interesting to see how companies and businesses react to the reduced amount of JK payment.
Very interesting indeed. You can get a bit of an idea what types of businesses have been able to adapt and thrive in the current environment, and those which have really struggled to do so.
For a lot of small businesses the real squeeze will come when eligibility for government payments gets tighter both for them and for their customers...
Yep, exactly! Good to hear the brickstore is going from strength to strength though. A good news story in little old Tassie. 😉
Yes, it's certainly keeping me busy at the moment, which is not a bad thing. Sleep is overrated anyway right?
You can sleep when you're dead...Bon Jovi told me so...Figured I'd pass that gem of wisdom on. 😂
I hope your Wednesday turns out well! Goodluck on your presentation sir!
Haven't heard J complaining about that problem in particular so I think that company has been handling it reasonably?
If there are people considering exit plans and the like I hope that it's enough to force people to reconsider as what the people in charge of the company are probably banking on is being able to replace people leaving with people too desperate to care about anything other than any kind of paycheque at all to come in and agree to work for less.
Good luck with stuff :|
Yep exactly...And there goes customer service and quality standards across the board...
Right now it is having the opposite effect on my business as I thought it would. I have said no to quite a few load opportunities as I just do not want to work 70+ hrs a week right now. And I am also avoiding parts of this country that are hot spots for the mass zombie like mental illness behavior that is spreading across this planet.
Some of the overall load rates are still lower than normal. But no real shortage of freight, as this planned-demic has seemed to make the driver (truck) shortage even larger than it was before the flu virus strain covid 19 was used to terrorize the world by China who was losing badly in a trade war.
The future is unknown in my industry. Autonomous trucks are being fast tracked. Just like the improperly tested covid vaccines they will kill many people I fear...
The more I think about it, a space trucking trip to Mars is looking pretty good right now G- Dog.!
src
I like your autonomous truck comment...Yep, that'll happen and then goodbye jobs. I fail to understand how automating everything is supposed to create jobs like the millennial's suggest. Maybe it's just wishful thinking on their part?
Oh hang on, there'll be loads of jobs, the most prevalent of which will be this one:
Standing in queue at the unemployment office.
