Part 1/5:

Egg Roll Bowls: A Simple and Flavorful Dish Minus the Egg

The term "Egg Roll Bowl" might mislead some into thinking eggs are a primary ingredient. However, this dish is devoid of any egg, focusing instead on a colorful medley of vegetables and a choice of protein. It offers a nutritious and satisfying meal that's perfect for meal prepping, with each portion containing around 384 calories.

Preparing the Ingredients

To start, gather your ingredients. The main elements include

  • Cabbage: You will need 350 grams (12.3 oz) each of red and white cabbage—Bok choy or Chinese cabbage works as an alternative.

  • Carrots: Three medium to large carrots, which can be grated using a box grater for ease.

Part 2/5:

  • Garlic & Ginger: Six cloves of garlic and 15 grams (0.3 oz) of peeled ginger, both processed into a fine paste.

  • Spring Onions (Scallions): Four spring onions, sliced thinly.

  • Optional Edamame: If you have frozen edamame beans on hand, around 100 grams (0.2 lbs) adds a delightful crunch.

Employ clean hands to mix all these components in a bowl. It’s essential to ensure every ingredient is evenly combined to enhance the flavors.

Crafting the Sesame Soy Sauce

Next, prepare a flavor-packed sauce. In a separate bowl, mix together:

  • Low-Sodium Soy Sauce: Half a cup (125 mL).

  • Apple Cider Vinegar: 2.5 tablespoons (50 mL).

  • Sesame Oil: 2 teaspoons (10 mL).

  • Mirin: 1 tablespoon (20 mL), optional.

Part 3/5:

Add a dash of ground white pepper for an extra kick. Whisk these ingredients until blended.

Cooking the Protein and Vegetables

With your ingredients prepped, heat a high-rimmed pan or pot over high heat. Use spray oil to reduce calories compared to regular oil—approximately 100 calories less. The cooking process involves:

  1. Adding 750 grams (1.6 lbs) of ground meat (beef, chicken, turkey, or pork) with around 5% fat content. Season lightly with salt and generously with ground white pepper.

  2. Brown the meat on one side for three minutes until golden, then flip and repeat.

  3. Break apart the meat after it's no longer pink, cooking for another two to three minutes.

  4. Add in the garlic and ginger paste, stirring for one minute until fragrant.

Part 4/5:

  1. Introduce your mixed vegetables (and optional edamame) to the pan. Allow them to soften for four to six minutes while maintaining their crunch.

  2. Pour in your sesame soy sauce, mixing thoroughly. Cook for one additional minute to ensure the sauce coats all ingredients evenly.

Check for seasoning one last time, adjusting with salt and pepper, before removing from heat.

Serving and Storing

To serve, consider weighing your total dish and dividing it into five portions. Although the presenter used four containers this time, the method accommodates diverse serving options. Garnish with sesame seeds and reserved spring onions for an added touch.

Part 5/5:

Cool the portions for 15 to 20 minutes before sealing. The egg roll bowls can be refrigerated for up to four days or frozen for up to four months. If you’re concerned about freezing the food, rest assured that it can be reheated effectively—just add a bit of stock while doing so.

Conclusion

This Egg Roll Bowl is a delightful medley of tastes and textures—with garlic and ginger shining through and a satisfying crunch from the fresh vegetables. The simplicity of the dish means it is highly customizable; substitute the proteins, throw in more veggies, or even replace meat with tofu for a vegetarian twist.

Part 1/8:

The Ultimate Beef Pie Recipe: A Culinary Delight

Make way for the ultimate comfort food classic: beef pie. This dish is not just a meal; it's an experience filled with rich flavors, tender meat, and the delightful crunch of pastry. With a combination of homemade shortcrust and puff pastry, this beef pie is a recipe that you will cherish and want to share with family and friends. Let’s dive into how to prepare this mouthwatering creation from the ground up.

Ingredients and Preparation: A Flavorful Base

To start, you will need to prepare an array of ingredients that form the backbone of your beef pie.

For the mirepoix base, gather:

  • 1 brown or yellow onion

  • 1 carrot

  • 1 stick of celery

  • 6 cloves of garlic

Part 2/8:

Begin by finely dicing the onion, ensuring the chunks are larger since they will be cooked for a longer time. Follow the same chopping method for the carrot and celery, making sure they are of similar sizes to ensure even cooking.

Next, crush and roughly chop the garlic cloves to release their robust flavor.

Herbs are essential to enhance the dish’s aroma; prepare a bouquet garni with:

  • 5 dried bay leaves

  • 6 sprigs of thyme

  • 6 sprigs of flat-leaf parsley

Wrap these herbs in butcher’s twine, knotting them securely to infuse the broth with their essence without having to fish them out later.

Part 3/8:

Finally, the star of the dish, 1 kilo (2.2 lbs) of beef chuck steak, should be patted dry and seasoned with salt and cracked black pepper. This preparation will ensure that your beef gets a beautiful sear, crucial for locking in flavors.

Cooking the Beef: The Art of Searing

Place a heavy pot over high heat, adding 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Sear half of the seasoned beef until golden brown, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan, which prevents proper browning. Repeat with the remaining beef, then remove it to a bowl.

Part 4/8:

Reduce the heat to medium-high and sauté the mirepoix mixture with a pinch of salt for about 3-4 minutes, allowing the vegetables to pick up the flavorful bits left from the beef. Introduce the garlic, cooking for an additional minute, then sprinkle in 4 tablespoons of flour, stirring gently to avoid clumps.

Next, pour in 1 cup (250 ml) of beef stock, 2 cups (500 ml) of dry red wine, and add the bouquet garni along with 3 tablespoons of tomato paste to fortify the dish with depth. Bring it to a simmer, then return the beef and any resting juices back into the pot.

Cover and let the beef stew simmer on low for two hours, stirring occasionally. The slow cooking process allows the meat to become tender and melds the flavors beautifully.

Preparing the Pastry: A Flaky Delight

Part 5/8:

While the beef is simmering, you can create your shortcrust pastry:

  • 250 g of plain flour

  • 140 g of unsalted butter (cubed and chilled)

  • 50 ml of ice-cold water

Blend the flour and butter until it resembles breadcrumbs, then slowly pour in the cold water until the dough starts to form. Wrap it in plastic and chill for at least 30 minutes.

Filling the Pie: Assemble with Care

Once the beef is done cooking, let it cool down (ideally overnight). Roll out the chilled shortcrust pastry on a lightly floured surface and cut it into circles suitable for your pie molds, ensuring they are large enough to account for shrinkage.

Part 6/8:

Blind bake the pastry in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for about 18-20 minutes using parchment paper and baking weights, then remove them from the oven to cool.

Fill each pastry base with the cooled beef mixture, mounding the filling slightly at the center.

Topping Time: Puff Pastry Perfection

Using store-bought puff pastry, cut out circles a little larger than your pie mold. Drape the pastry over the filled pies, folding the edges under to create a seal. Brush the tops with egg yolk for a beautiful golden finish, and sprinkle your choice of seasoning such as salt, pepper, or seeds.

Bake the pies for another 20-25 minutes until the pastry is golden brown and flaky, releasing an intoxicating aroma in your kitchen.

The Moment of Truth: Enjoy Your Beef Pie

Part 7/8:

Once out of the oven, allow the pies to rest briefly before slicing into them. The sight of tender, flavorful beef enveloped in a rich gravy, nestled under a flaky and crispy pastry top is simply irresistible.

With each bite, you will experience a melt-in-your-mouth sensation that epitomizes comfort food at its finest. The buttery smoothness of the shortcrust paired with the airy lightness of the puff pastry creates a divine combination that is hard to resist.

Conclusion: A Recipe to Remember

This classic beef pie is not just a dish; it’s a celebration of flavors and textures that invite you to savor every bite. Whether it’s for a cozy family dinner or a gathering with friends, this pie will impress everyone at the table.

Part 8/8:

Thank you for joining me on this culinary adventure, and remember, sharing food is sharing love. Don’t skip this delicious journey; gather your ingredients and make this delightful beef pie at home. Enjoy!

Is breakfast a truly essential meal?

Diet talk is everywhere; on the web, social media networks, television, in the press… There's an abundance of communication on the matter, offering a plethora of ways to guarantee a healthy and varied diet.

Advertising on the subject is and remains widespread. At the heart of this media buzz, breakfast is believed the meal of the day that supports a good health and a balanced life. But how, when seeking advice, can you distinguish between what's true or false? Is breakfast really the key to a dream figure?

I almost never eat breakfast. 2x cups of coffee is plenty for me until lunch around noon

it's more of a commitment than we might think. That daily cup of coffee isn't always so easy to drink

Oh, okay. So you just take 2 cups of coffee...any cookies to go with?

At times I take smoothie or eat fruits if I won't have sandwich or pancakes for breakfast.

smoothies or fruit can be nice sometimes. But yep, mostly just coffee

Yeah, you're right. Oh, okay. I guess you do black coffee and not creamy.

and no sugar.

How do you take your coffee?

Oh, okay. I heard black coffee is better and Taskmaster also said so.

I like mine sweetened and with milk. I prefer using honey to sweeten it. I don't take coffee often and I would like to try it black and unsweetened.

To have a real influence on your body and the course of your day, breakfast must be copious; this is advocated by numerous advisors and specialists in all kinds of diets. It's also said that the morning meal has encouraging benefits when looking to lose weight. With much more energy stored when waking up and a whole day to burn the first calories accumulated, a calculation can quickly be done. It's better to feel free to eat well during this meal so as not to have to compensate for an energy void later.

If, apparently, the thinnest people are those who don't skip breakfast, it has never been proven that eating in the morning (when waking up) is a guarantee of weight loss. Take people who are overweight and who therefore move less. Unlike lovers of rich breakfasts who eat smaller quantities during the rest of the day and have a more active lifestyle thanks to their physical condition, part of the overweight population will not be able to evacuate calories in the same way. "They continue to eat as copiously during the day, and the calories from breakfast simply add to the rest," indicates Le Vif in its Bodytalk magazine. Consequence: the risk of additional weight gain increases.

Finally, it is important to remember that these assumptions, specific to a special diet menu, are often erroneous or biased. Everyone eats differently and has a very different, if not opposite, relationship with food. Your body doesn't work the same way as your neighbor's. If breakfast integrates habits and a healthy lifestyle, this certainly doesn't mean that it will be the miracle cure for keeping in shape. The main thing lies in your ability to take a step back from all this nutritional advice, and to try to evaluate what can and should be changed.

Of course, it's important, to choose quality foods and not processed foods, simple and if possible varied. Changing your outlook on food and keeping an open mind, these are the guides to gaining a nutritional balance and by extension your physical health.
