In 10 months of steemit. @aggroed has flagged 1 post. It was hate speech against gays. It incited violence. So, I flagged it.
Today, I'm sorry to say I have flagged a user heavily. @el-mago was flagged by steem cleaners for putting porn he didn't own nor cited onto a post. He was dinged by @steemcleaners for it. A member of Minnow Support flagged the post as well for spam and abuse. @el-mago proceeded to rage flag the MSP member in question. He did this to several people.
I asked @el-mago to remove the flags and explained that his behavior was against the very few community standards that are actively enforced by users. I asked multiple times. I received nothing but rudeness and crassness. While reviewing other interactions he was having on the block chain I noticed him insulting, using foul language pretty crassly at other people especially women, disrespecting women, and generally acting poorly.
After multiple warnings and even sharing that I would act on his behalf to remove several flags placed on his post he continued his current stance and threatened @aggroed. I have gone through and flagged his active posts on this account and @aggroed. I have voted on the MSP member's posts to undo the effect of his rage flags.
I am in a moral quandary about one other thing. @o0pepper0o is a camgirl style blogger that has a lot of nudes of herself and erotic/xxx material. It's outside the scope of MSP to upvote her content, but el-mago has been particularly rude to her in addition to flagging her active posts. I would encourage followers of this blog to upvote the active content on her blog (he flagged her resteems too).
He's new. I'm willing to remove all flags and leave him in peace if he removes his rage flags and stops using copyrighted material in his posts. Otherwise I plan to use this account to flag every post he ever makes until an apology is issued and the behavior is altered.
In this, I'm in complete agreement. While I am an ardent supporter of free speech (even that which is called hate speech) vendetta flagging is something else. It lessens the community as a whole, and seeks to silent those that disagree.
If I lothe what someone is saying, I'll argue a little too make sure that is what they're saying (misinterpretation causes a lot of enemies that otherwise could find common ground) and if I still don't want to hear their shit I'll mute them. Flagging should be kept as a punative measure reserved for those that would silence unpopular thoughts, corporate shills that take money to actively decieve us, and bots that drown out the conversations with noise. Clarification: there are a lot of good bots around. I'm not talking about those. Those bots are great.
This reply is already long, and branching into rant territory.
Tl;Dr: Vendetta flaggers hurt the community. I don't think anybody minds a life lesson/example being made here.

Flagrant yes. Plagiarism can be a bit of a grey area though. Would you call DBZ Abridged plagiarism? Toei does, funimation doesn't. Legal definitions don't have any moral or community basis so we can't relay on those to serve us well here.
Before I include plagiarism, we would need some solid community guidelines on what constitutes flagrant plagiarism.
See, this is why I'm so damn conflicted about all of this. So I'm going to pull a 180' and agree with what you're effectively saying here, and that is to maybe just leave ALL the stuff that has the potential to include grey areas out of flagging's purposes altogether.

Allegedly it's 24 hours to 100% with no voting in the meantime, to slow it down recharging. HOWEVER, since HF19, people are reporting 24-36-never hours for full recharge. I have no hard data, only anecdotal comment hearsay.
My recharge rate was more like 36hrs but I could not refrain from a few upvotes.

I was the original victim outside @o0pepper0o. When I came in to assist with flagging @el-mago, I had no idea that he would be offended at the little 30 SP downvotes I put on some of the spam.
When I randomly lost a bunch of rewards on some of my posts and had some go hidden entirely, I was confused. Looked through my flags and spotted the issue.
The other part I find hilarious is the amount of purchased SP. He started with placing approx 1300 into a second account and using his main as well. Now he is comfortably into 10k+ SP on el-mago and still 1300+ on the other account, just to do this.
My posts have been voted back up, and I am unbelievably grateful. The reaction in the MSP discord was so amazing. The speed with which pitchforks and torches were gathered was heart-warming.
For now I have removed all flags I placed as a sign that we can reverse from this position, but I leave the heavy lifting to those with more SP and more experience.

Though from hearing only your side of this situation, it seems like you could have a valid point. What I dont like is the sense that people are ganging up on him. I had a similar situation being here for just a couple weeks and not knowing the "unwritten" rules of steem power and flagging. My rep went from a 25 to a 5 simply because I was posting videos that a group of people with alot of influence didnt like. Given that Im new and dont have that steem power I pretty much couldnt defend myself from these actions. I wasnt given any warning, after being flagged the flaggers didnt even write me to let me know that I was flagged and gave me a reason why. Given that Steemit didnt notify me that I was being flagged I was going an entire week while flaggers with a alot of steem power were destroying my page and rep and hiding my content. My point is, speak to the guy, but ganging up on people aint cool. What do you expect when he's being ganged up on, not to rage flag? Of course he's going to lose that battle, given that he's new and he's alone. But in many ways it seems like everyone with steem power and friends are becoming the police now. I've even gotten a taste of that as well, so that comes from experience. And no one decided to remove flags, or even write me to school me. People are having fun doing it, knowing that new people are virtually helpless to it. Who can they tell? It's a decentralized platform. Just my thoughts.

What exactly does it mean to get flagged? You loose all potential payouts, right? Why can one single person have such a strong power to ruin the experience for others? I mean, I could basically go through all your posts and flag them, as far as I understand it. What is the purpose of this possibility?
The flagging system exists to stop fraud and abuse. Flagging itself is sometimes abused. Higher SP holders have the ability to flag lower SP holders. It undoes rewards on a post and it can have pretty dramatic effects on rep. You may notice he's currently rocking a rep of 3. If he continues to catch large flags his posts which are spam, abusive and against community standards will be invisible in general.
You may not realize it, but responsible flagging is a huge part of what keeps this community nice, pleasant, and troll free. Negative behavior is penalized strongly by community members.
Read his comments. I'm willing to bet you'll feel better if all his posts and thoughts are hidden as well as his spam, stolen porn, and shit posts.
I believe you. It is just that actions like these will create a downward spiral for him and never make him overthink what he is doing. But I don't have a better solution either.

Flags is simply the chosen representation on Steemit.com. More accurately, in the code of the blockchain, a flag is a downvote. If 1 user upvotes a post with enough power to give it $1, and another user downvotes the post but only has half as much power, the payout will move down to .50 cents. No single flag blocks a post from getting rewards, and you do not have to be higher powered or higher reputation than the person you are flagging.

Yeah, flagging is actually a very powerful way to moderate behavior. It relies on the highest stakeholders actually being good people too.
I saw someone in the new feed, and this was a week ago, so the details escape me, but they had a rep of 5. That's awful. But the post that I saw was good, original content (as far as I could tell) I wondered if they were the victim of some accident or malice. Unfortunate that they could have been. Hope some whales came to their rescue (unless what I saw of their posts was not representative. Schade.)

I believe that is half correct. Someone with a level 25 account can still have a strong flag if they have enough steem power.

That's correct, but even if your rep is 25, if you've got a lot of Steem Power (which is what determines your vote power, not your rep), then you're not a little guy. Something to keep in mind is that the reputation number is not figured into anything that has to do with the Steem blockchain at all. It's part of the front-end website itself and is kind of just a reference number. Reputation is important, don't get me wrong, because of course this is a social website and if you get flagged, it hurts your reputuation; it lowers it. If you get flagged enough (especially by someone with high Steem Power) to put you into the negative reputation, you become virtually invisible.
Otherwise, if you and someone else have roughly the same Steem Power, the person with the higher rep does win that one.
Disclaimer: This is based on how I've seen this feature operate since it was introduced. If someone finds my statements here to be inaccurate, hopefully they'll pop up and say something.

When I had 25
He had no change
I had the feeling I stay for ever at 25

Things I like, I generally try to vote at about 3-10%. If I really like it, I'll bump it up to, maybe 30-40%. If it's absolutely awesome, like top 5 of the day, I'll slam it with 100%.
Keep in mind my 100% is only like a dollar.

I think of it as a death spiral. They must know in their heart it’s not going work out here for them so they just go crazy. I often wonder if they come here with way to high expectations, or just don’t want put in the time.

I have seen a few accounts that pretty much recently made and are practically used just for flagging, I wonder who could be behind this? Because I don't see any profit in flagging.

I was curious how flags were looked at..I really can't stand blatant/potentially harmful misinfo. I did unfortunately flag someone for that that also had over 22 blogs posted in 7 hrs....the "info " posted could be highly dangerous for diabetics

I was on discord last night as all of this was unraveling. @minnowsupport and @discordiant have been fantastic support and guidance to me.
What I would say is that last night I was proud to be part of the #minnowsupportproject as I wittnessed a community pull together to support each other. My first call of duty this morning was to check in a see if the community had been able to come to a resolve with this 'TROLL'
@aggroed I would also like to commend you for stepping in. there was a lot of anger and disgust in the community last night, yet you called for peaceful resolve and communication

I'm new to all this Minnow support, but if what I read is correct, then an education in what is socially acceptable was necessary. Everyone sees the world through different eyes, but respect for one another is a must, especially when we cannot look at each other in the eyes. We have to be extra careful and think about what we are typing. Upvoted and Resteemed.

I am an ardent supporter of free speech . Its obvious FLAGGING is a slippery slope it will only to vendetta flagging and every effort to silence the speech of those who disagree. If this is steemit idea its a poor idea and the road people like me closing their accounts. if they start the censorship narrative, I see no future here.
While I don't have a lot of steem power I will support @o0pepper0o because she is creating her own content also goes around posting on "properly Sourced Content" in short she is adding to Steem it.
Sadly there are quite a few people that actual believe in some twisted way that it's ok to steal other peoples content (that cost them money and time to produce) and use it without permission.
It's unbelievable to me that they can justify that. Generally these people have never created anything on their own otherwise they would respect the content creators rights.
But I'm very happy to see that the majority of Steemit's user are policing the content. I have had my work stolen before as well.
But there are also people running scams using other peoples work without permission but doing it as their daily photopics trying to look legit and making large payouts on other people's work without permission. Their is no contest, no rewards, nothing for the people who's work they are using. They say it's curation but their attitude, lack of regard and lack of upvoting other people shows it's just a more clever form of piracy.
