First of all, I have to say upfront this post does not represent the view of everyone or even the majority on Hive. It is my own view based on my time on Hive, my observation and opinion of how things should roll. In particular some figures I used can be quite subjective. You may not agree with my standards and that's fine.
The Healthcheck List
But if you're feeling a little lost on Hive, am wondering why some people get more support than you, then this may give you some inkling. Take a look at the points below and see how many apply to you.
Group A
- I have never abused on Hive, plagiarised, spun content or used AI to write my posts
first and most foremost, original content only on Hive please, don't expect support for anything else
- My posts normally consist of more than 150 words or original photos/art/music/video created by me
I get it not everyone writes long content and Hive welcomes short form content as well. However, you'll generally find you have a higher chance of getting more support if you enhance your content, it's very difficult to have one killer photo that garners a lot of support
- On average I read and consume at least 5 posts a day written by other people
don't just come here to dump your post hoping for rewards and leave. If you want people to read your content, make an effort to read other peoples' as well
- Excluding bot commands or entry to contests, I make at least 5 genuine quality comments on the day I'm active on Hive
leading on from the previous point, engage with people after you have read their post, make quality comments to show you have read it. Engagement is key to building your account and network
- I comment more on other people's posts than responding to comments on my own posts
spread the support around and people will do the same. If no one commented on other people's post, Hive would be a dead place
- My self vote % is less than 5%
Self vote can be seen as selfish by many on Hive. Imagine if all the whales selfvote themselves every day, there will be nothing left in the reward pool for everyone else. Support other people instead yourself. (see below on how to find your selfvote %)
- I spread my upvote around to a lot of people
We all have our favourite authors we like to support, but it would be nice to spread our support around to more people and especially beyond self vote. There's no hard and fast rule on this, but maybe the 20/80 rule will be a good place to start (see below on how to find this out)
- I have powered up at least 10 times in the past 12 months
- I am not or have not powered down in the past 6 months
Increasing your stake gives you more power on Hive, and you will get more curation rewards when you upvote people. Both are signs of your long term commitment to Hive.
- I have at least 30 HBD in savings
There aren't many places that give you 15% interest on your savings. Hang around for 3 years you'll get 50% on your savings, and in 5 years time you'll double it
- I delegate 40% or less of my stake
Delegation can have different purposes, but a lot of times it's for returns from the delegatee. You get returns for yourself but that means you can't' upvote and support others. Following a trail instead of delegating can have the same effect and you still have the flexibility to support your favourite authors. Win win for everyone
- My staked HP is more than my earnings on Hive
This has been a very talked about subject recently for all the right reasons. If you missed it, you can read about it here and here. (See below on how to find this out)
- I actively manage my own or help to moderate/curate in at least one community
We can't expect everyone to run or help manage a community, but it's nice if you can contribute back to the community
- I have proxied or voted for at least 27 witnesses
Excercise your right to have a say in Hive governance, even if you have a small stake. It's the intention that matters. Vote for witnesses that you think offer value to Hive and not one because they give you 0.001 Hive everyday. That's called vote buying
- I have invested fiat into Hive
That's a true vote of confidence in Hive. Well done!!!
Some of the information for the above points can be found on this website https://hivetasks.com/ just add @ and your account at the end of the link. If the data doesn't load, please check the settings. Instructions can found here.
Self Vote - this is the figure circled in red. This user doesn't selfvote at all 👍
Spread your upvote around - click on the Out Votes button circled in yellow on the right hand side. A pop up window will appear with a list of the people you voted for the most. This user upvotes many people, or they could be following curation trails. Either way, they're spreading their support around 👍
Staked HP vs earnings - your staked HP can be found in all wallets. Here it is shown as 42645 circled in blue at the top. At the bottom is their all time earnings 8652 + 22185 = 30837. This user has a higher stake than their earnings 👍
Group B
A few more checkpoints before we are done
- I am following two or more whales with over 1m effective HP who have not posted in the past two years
- I did my first outgoing transaction within three months of making my first post
- Excluding Waves/Threads or other short form dapps, I normally post more than twice each day
The Results and what does it mean?
As I mentioned before, some of these checks are subjective, eg what's abuse or what's a genuine quality comment? Why 150 words and not 50? Why read 5 posts a day when I'm so busy in real life? Why 5% self vote and not 20%? Why delegate 40% and not 60%? What's wrong with powering down or making an outgoing transaction within the first three months?
Hive is decentralised, there are no rules and you can more or less do what you want. We all have different needs in real life, and different expectations from Hive and that's fine. For example, power down is always a contentious issue. I know power down have helped some people in life and death situations or during Covid when they had no income. But being active and constantly powering down and withdrawing when you have earned over 20k but have less than 500 staked in your account?
The reason I have this checklist is because they are things many people look for when deciding to support an account or not. If you answered Yes to any of these checks, deduct the Yes in Group B from the Yes in Group A. The maximum score you will get is 15 and the lowest -3. Hopefully you will have a high positive number. There is no hard and fast rule on what's a good score or minimum acceptable level for a healthy account. There is no pass mark. This isn't an exam. These are merely prompts to give you an insight into the mindsight of those who can help you
If you want, feel free to drop your score below, there are always people looking out for healthy accounts to support. And don't feel compelled, or the need to explain why you scored -3. As long as you're ok with it is all that matters.
Have a great weekend!
Thank you for this helpful post which I will pass on to the next new users who ask me for advice.
I am very proud of my self vote = 0 and the fact that in more than 5 years I have never done a power down because on Hive I have a very long-term goal
I like to support other writers, so I have given myself a self-rule: never delegate more than 25% of my Hp stake
I like and agree with all the points you listed in this nice post of yours. Regard HP and HBD, HP is more valuable for me and that's why I have 0 HBD in my wallet because I convert them all to HP :)
Regarding Hivetasks the Inc.votes and Out.votes section is not viewable unless you first change an option in the module section and I am sending you this screenshot because it might be helpful to those who cannot view these sections of Hive tasks.
Hive a nice weekend :)

Thanks for spreading the word around to newbies. Those who seek your advice are on a good start already.
Although I said this doesn't represent the view of the majority, I'm pretty sure it represents the view of many who care enough about Hive and collectively can drive it forward.
And thanks for the settings information, I noticed it didn't work on my mobile either 😓. I've added this comment link to the post to save me rewriting it 😀
Upvoted 👌 (Mana: 20/50) Liquid rewards.

This is a great post - I found it through a link and I appreciate it!
I had no idea you could get this data :)
I also had no idea "self voting" was frowned upon - I have done that in the past but I "feel like" I definitely upvote others far more than myself.
However "Data" > "Feelings" so I'll be able to check this out and remedy this!
Thank you again :)
Well detailed task list that do indeed matter. I tried link bit it seems some of the info just says loading and doesn't finish. I just wonder how it interrupts gifting others and/or powering others up. I have never done a power down, yet. I have never been a fan of self voting just seems selfish to me. I've only done it by mistake, haha. I do like putting HBD in saving but withdraw a lot to power it up HPUD. I'll be saving more once I finally hit the Dolphin stage :-) I don't know that simple goal is a priority for me to get to.
My bad, I forgot you had to change some settings to see the data. @libertycrypto27 has provided the details in his comment above. However, I find the site works a lot better on computer
I know you often power up to others, that's a very selfless action and isn't on my health check list, perhaps it should. I think if you include those power up you'd be a dolphin already. Not far to go now!
Oh cool it would have taken forever to figure that out, glad libertycrypto27 provided the solution. So close to the next stage your right :-) What's good is I have plenty of material to write just need the time to do it.
What happens when you're off the charts, iGuess. I lost count and then started over and then lost it again so I skipped down here to the comment section. Now, if you'll excuse me, I gotta go drop 4 more comments.
Don't forget the four other posts as well! It's gonna be a busy weekend 💪😉
There are no definitive rules, but the main ones IMHO should be engagement, honesty and selflessness.
Not everyone has the time to be on here every day, but when they do it should be to 'consume' as well as create. I think everyone can find something of interest here and should aim to make their feed entertaining. Hive can be as entertaining as other platforms and without all the ads and 'suggested content'.
Of course people want to earn, but that tends to go better when you help to build the community.
!BEER
Agre . A lot of users have the post, dump and hope for the whale mentality. They still don't understand create, consume, engage and build your network is what works in the long run.
I have exactly the opposite problem, lol. I come here to post, spot something interesting in my notifications and end up falling down a rabbit-hole of fascinating posts people have written. Then an hour later my wife tells me dinner is on the table and I hadn't got around to making the post I originally came here to do.....
Lol,10. Not as stellar as I had hoped.
30 HBD, I had thousands before cashing it on for hive in the slump. Now I have a pitiful amount. You could argue that having a large HBD savings number doesn't help hive at all though unless people do it for the reasons I did which is to buy when hive hits an all time low!
Hopefully those who don't have any, or much HBD savings have done exactly what you've done as well
Have you read your five a day yet? 😁
Lol, every day!
I'd say I'm 13 out of 15, as I don't have HBD and I'm currently delegeting a bit more than 40% of my HP... but I'm working on that :)
We all have different standards but it seems our views are pretty much aligned, it's always nice to know there are like minded people around.
Agreed! I'm happy when I found that there are a lot of people who cares about Hive and share very similar values :) it gives me hope that we can achieve even better results if we stick to our vision and help everyone else understand how Hive is more than a "money printing machine".
12? I honestly don't know, I got a little lost in there I think. I think right now I might be delegating away more than 40%, but that is changing in two days when my last delegation comes back in.
Lucky 13 then!! But seriously, you know what's good for Hive and that's the most important thing
Pretty subjective indeed, while measured in figures and percents, but gives a right direction; not a rules but a guides. 😎 adding the 1st comment today I made at Hive; this is less than 5, so what? just nothing.
It's a good start. We all have to start somewhere
I don't have 30 HBD on savings. Never did :)
also I never have voted for 27 witnesses
Both are very concious decisions:
Currently (almost always) Hive has more potential than HBD at any given time, if you are active
I don't find 30 witnesses that I like :) Never did!
Hey, would you consider supporting a witness down under. If nothing else it is decentralizing the blockchain. I own my hardware and host it locally, no one can force me to shutdown.
Good enough reason for me:) done.
Here is the question: why didn’t you ask me earlier?
Thanks a lot, I appropriate the vote, The witness node is reasonably new and I want to establish some history and reputation as a reliably witness with an angle of not using shared VPS hosting.
I hang out with @mattclarke a lot and share his vision that relationships are far more important than gaming the system, so I try and build a rapport first than ask for some support.
Thanks again.
Thanks for the tag :) Yes, he's one of the Adelaide guys, and does good work.
The HBD savings vs HP is a bit of a six of one and half a dozen of the other situation. Whilst the witness figure I was planning to write at least 27/28/29.. then forgot to change the figure when I was still deciding 😅
And that gives you a perfect 15 score by my standards. But my standards doesn't matter, only yours does in your eyes.
Have a great weekend!
Hey, I like it :)
Heading to India next week. First international trip after surgery. Should be good to be back in the saddle again! World needs oil and gas!
So soon?!!😮 Take care!
Feeling rather good. Doctors are surprised on the recovery too!
You know, I do love air travel and miss it. Plus the adrenaline ... too much to miss if I don't travel!
Agree, didnt go after HBD savings at all, prefer to max my HP.
Anyway to max your HP is a good way 💪👍
Same here, unfortunately I don't get enough time to engage more, but hopefully, I will have more time in 2030, by which my account would have grown nicely.
You have done really well by investing on Hive, hats off to you for that!!
I scored a 10, not perfect but who is?
At least?, that's the most any of us can vote for. I'm on 28 or 29, I like to keep at least one spare..., so this one.. I failed 😃
Haha! Forget to amend that. Now you score 11!!
Hi mate, I can recommend a spot for your spare witness vote, send it my way.
I would need to know what you do for HIVE (besides the above), to give you my vote.
Sure, as in software development you mean? I don't have any apps worth sharing, just a few basic admin scripts, witness node health checks etc.
I do follow your chops.support upvote trail and other on-boarding activities. Also a long time splinterlands player.
Thanks again.
There is that..., not enough to get you up even one position, but your nearest rival is a now a 1 million short.
Great post, I think more content like this could be helpful for newbies to hive. It's easy to get lost or not know what to do when you're new on here.
Hello! Another Brit!
There are tonnes of good guides around for newbies, just that they're all over the chain and difficult to find. That's why I created @newbies-guide as a depositary to put things in one place.
As to this healthcheck list, I'm sure other seasoned users will have a different one but you'll probably find a common theme through them. It's basically all about being honest, original, supportive and engaging. Pretty standard traits in life, but some tend to forget when money is involved.
Hope to see you around more, it's always good to have more active Brits on Hive 🇬🇧
Yeah there are a good few of us dotted around. I'll bear that in mind next time I come across some new or lost looking peeps and send them to your guide.
Cheers
I reblogged this to come back later for a proper read through, so for now don't mind this comment 😅😅

What an evaluation! This is very helpful. Thank you
I didn't evaluate anything, they were just prompts
Thanks for sharing these tips and linking the resource. I appreciate the insight into some of these important statistical thresholds on Hive.
You can find out a lot about yourself (and everyone else) on Hive, it can be very useful to help us keep or get back on track
Now if we could have a ui that checked all those things for us, that would be great.
Or, if we could get a weekly krampus report that included those data points, that would help improve curating efforts overall.
The Krampus score is one good indication of an account but I think we need to take a holistic and balanced view if we were really serious about curating good accounts. I know some are doing that already
Right, no bad authors only bad curators.
Still, some indication for curators that was generally available would help those that don't take the time to vet their votes.
Warning! This account is on the krampus list!
It would give the authors a chance to better fit their contribution to the norms of the community.
Even something like spaminator would help.
The hive would look very different if 4 years ago we had set some hp retention standards for curation.
Instead so much was voted to authors that dumped it like it was hot that 'the whales' started crying about its impact on the price.
We have only ourselves to take this responsibility up.
Not many of us play this game only so we can watch the dumpers keep the price in the basement.
Yet, dumpers still get curation.
I'm shocked at the number of 70+rep accounts with less than 1000hp.
The poors couldn't vote that to them, even with years to try.
I'm not asking that 100% be retained, but some minimums need to be established community wide, imo.
Like many new communities or even newly established countries, I think in the earlier years things are a little wild west, Steem was certainly like that where bidbots and selfvote were the norm. As time passes and the community matures, our standard and community norms evolves, what's acceptable last year may not be today.
You just have to be around to feel the tide turn and catch it
Really very good advice what you mention here.
Many times we can get frustrated if we don't have the results we imagined, but thinking that this is like any kind of business which you have to work constantly is also another way to see things realistically.
Something that hit me a little bit when I read your post was the fact of not using ia for publications, I recognize that I had been doing it and I understand why the support for my publications declined almost to zero.
So it's also a sign of personal commitment to do better and put more personal effort into creating quality stuff for the platform.
Hive is a blogging platform, not an education establishment so we don't need perfect written content, just something that is original and written by yourself. Even if you use a translator to English, there is no need to ask AI to rewrite the English part for you because then it is no longer your original content.
Hopefully your Hive journey will getting better with your commitment and effort
!LOL

(10/10)
@livinguktaiwan! @phillarecette Totally agrees with your content! so I just sent 1 IDD to your account on behalf of @phillarecette.
This is a great help to keep a luddite on the straight and narrow path, one thing that confused me though was the delegation bit
I delegate, because I thought it is what you do, but Does that mean that when I am 'upvoting" others content, I actually am not ?
happy to be +10 with no yeses in group B, which I guess is to be avoided.
I did look at the links, saw graphs and went into a cold sweat, rocket science.
( 3rd interaction of an early Sunday morning)
If you have say 10k HP, your full vote is worth around $0.10, but if you delegate 95% out, it reduces your effective VP to 500 HP worth $0.005 only. You can play around with vote values here.
https://hive-now.com/upvotecalc.html
Lots of clever people on Hive creating all these clever thingys 😀
you included !, thanks
Thanks for the link, gonna check mine as well .
Hope there are no unpleasant surprises
Sometimes I kept telling myself... if only I have less sleep but still doesn't affect my energy level, then I can come back and do more on HIVE....
But sadly, not happening. 😅
You take care of yourself, family and real life is more important than anything else
Very good and useful list, thanks 👍🏻
But I really don't get it why someone would self vote... Is there some kind of use other than getting a higher reward?
Occasionally people may self vote their own comment because they want to raise visibility eg if I call out an abuser on his post I self vote to make people aware.
I think some newbies do it coz they think it looks good to have more upvotes aka likes on FB/IG in the web 2.0 world, and they don't realise doing that on Hive has undesirable effects. But mostly it's people being greedy wanting more rewards.
I like it, I like this very much. I'm sometimes a little picky too, so this is good for me to measure myself in some things that I hadn't considered at all. Discussions aside, there are different user profiles, but I think that if it comes to being a successful blogger, we must consider many of these things.
Btw, I think I'm a 10. Sounds nice 😏 even if it's not the best haha. Improvement rates are always good.💪
I'd say I total 9-10 points! :) Don't remember last time I self-voted, and if I did, it was by accident; that's one of the things I don't see sense in. But I am considering a small power-down if we ever get to a crazy bull run again; it will by my first ever if it happens, but I think it's an awesome way to play with the market and increase my Hive stake in the long run, as the prices receed after some time.
Power downs aren't all bad, it's just the constant ones like I mentioned that really gets to me. It's definitely nice to treat yourself occasionally especially during a bull run
True. Can't understand those either, given all the long term benefits of powering up and building your stake!
Definitely some really important points! I think that these types of things are good to help direct new users to a way on the platform that coincides with the beliefs of many of us, but isn’t too radical or annoying. It’s a good balance between keeping the place a positive environment and having some structure. With the conventional platforms, the people are too used to going nuts and doing stupid shit. It’s certainly a mindset shift coming over to hive!
I think the screenshots are of the coolest unidentified user around :D!!
It's unfortunate that not many newbies have responded to this post. Hopefully if they see this post in future and read the comments they will realise the implications of all this.
As to the unidentified user, they're definitely an example of an exemplary user on Hive, worth taking a leaf out of their book 😎
Excellent advice! Love this! 🩵
Hopefully this will help some newbies, lots of it are basic stuff which they seem to overlook
Although you mentioned that your insight about Hive healthcheck is subjective, I do think that it's better than none at all.
Looking at Group A, I feel like I need to improve on some aspects, especially the HBD savings and Witness votes.
All my HBD I'm selling for Hive in the market; not converting to avoid unnecessary Hive inflation. I'm looking into building my HBD savings when the price of Hive is above $1.
While my Witness votes are quite good, I have voted for only a few. The ones who are building and genuinely supporting the ecosystem from my point of view. I guess I need to examine further and assess the ones that I should be voting for too. I will check this out soon.
For other things, I will have to review further in hopes that I will score higher. 😅
Thanks for providing this checklist. 👍
It depends on the reason why one doesn't have any savings, obviously if they've sold for Hive and staked, that's great, and will be reflected in the earnings Vs stake figure.
As to witnesses, there are so many around it can be quite difficult to choose. Some don't include a bio to "sell" themselves and that makes it difficult to get support if people don't know what and how you contribute to the chain
Noted that. Thanks for explaining further 👍
I'm so happy to have seen this, this will be so helpful for so many. Thank you!
Congratulations @livinguktaiwan! You have completed the following achievement on the Hive blockchain And have been rewarded with New badge(s)

Help me to do my quick self-reflection! Thanks for the blog.
It reminds me of the time when I used to read many more posts each day. Recently, I've been dealing with some issues, and my habit of reading posts has taken a hit due to a tighter schedule. This change is also reflected in my posting frequency.
Once I resolve some of the more serious real-life problems, I plan to start commenting on at least five posts a day again.
The way I see it, for every post I make, I can comment on five others. I believe I still do this to some extent, as I often jump into conversations when certain keywords catch my attention. After all, what's the point of being part of the hive if we can't buzz?
This is an interesting post. I will try to better understand it with time I pass here but keep these in mind.
Very nicely written and each of those points are like checklists for all of us to grow better on Hive.
I am a true believer in this even from early days on Hive and I still abide by this except that, some times the trail we want to support also votes on my blogs, I want to find a way to stop that. Hope to find One soon.
This is something I need to improve, Being part of game like Splinterlands, I spend some of my earnings on purchase of packs and cards and I also keep investing in other Cryptos, so, my staked SP is way below than my earnings.
Overall, lots of learnings from what you shared and I will try to adopt some points if not all and I am sure that will improve my Hive health.
Thanks again for writing this.
I never knew about such a site that provids the stats for hive account's health. Here is my result. A few things are not loading. Never mind
I am doing most of the things that you have mentioned. No plagiarism, no self vote. However, I am not active on Hive every day. Some days I make more comments and other days none. Nevertheless, one thing is for sure I read and comment on other people more than I publish my own post.
Thanks for sharing the objective list to check our account's health status
Wow thank you so much for such a great information.
This is really a guide tool for us and newbies.
Thank you.
