"Hello old friend, it's nice to meet eat you," I said with a smirk, "it's been too long."
You're looking at a very good friend of mine, a blueberry baked cheesecake from my favourite patisserie. I can't remember when last I spent time with my friend, [that means it's far too long], and it was nice tasty to become reacquainted.
Lifegevity
I put a lot of effort into eating in a manner that supports my overall health and longevity of life...[Lifegevity is a good work for seeking a longer life - yep, it's a word now - I say so.] I say, effort, because it's sometimes difficult to deny myself things I truly love to eat, my blueberry cheesecake friend for instance, I do it though because my life literally depends on it.
It's not so much of an effort now I guess though, more of a habit, although I get worn out having to think about food, what, when and how much carbohydrates and sugar, fats and sodium I may have consumed, or will consume; it dominates my life but that's how it is when living with an incurable health condition; discipline, consistency and ownership is essential.
This is not to say I don't enjoy some of the things I used to; in fact, I'm able to eat virtually anything I want, I just have to accompany it with an injected artificial hormone, a peptide, that deals with it each time I eat, especially if it's things like cheesecake. It sucks, but it's the reality and I'm rockin' life because of the extra effort I go to; the alternative, eating however I wish, isn't a viable one and an early grave is the prize at the end of that path...nope, I'd rather put in a little effort, eat well, be physically active and take some daily injections.
I prefer to keep my diet in good shape which keeps my body in good shape too. I drink alcohol in moderation, don't smoke cigarettes and am very active; a good combination which all works towards lifegevity. It's a satisfying way to be, if difficult at times, however I know I benefit from every good decisions I make so I work at integrating good habits into my life and eliminating the bad. There's times when satisfaction of another kind are required though, and that's where things like blueberry cheesecake comes into play.
Satisfoodation
Do you seek food satisfaction from time to time...or all the time? Let's call it, satisfoodation, actually, it seems right to do so.
Are there foods you limit but enjoy from time to time? What are they and why? Is there a food that you find irresistible and possibly have too much of? How do you limit the bad and maximise the good foods in your life, how does it make you feel and what's your activity level? Could you do more to support your health and potentially live a longer life? Feel free to comment below if you'd like to, I'd be pleased to hear from you and respond.

The image in this post is my own.
These new words are hilarious. Ever thought about submitting them to Webster? That blueberry cheesecake looks delicious, but also interesting. I think this is the first time I'm seeing something like it. It looks too small for a whole cake, but too big compared to a slice. It looks overall different from what I am used too.
Since my family has a history of diabetes and heart problems, I have been very conscious of the food I eat. I had been diagnosed with prediabetes, so I limit my sugar intake. Rice is a food that I find irresistible, and have too much of. I eat it 3 times a day, and in large amounts. But since rice can increase sugar, I try to compensate by not eating any sweets instead. I don't eat chocolates, candies, and ice cream.
I do need to increase my activity level. I spend most of my days sitting in front of the computer.
I was hoping someone would comment on those two words I made up, you're the first.
That cheesecake is a single serve made individually as you see it rather than cut off a larger cake. It's bloody tasty, not too sweet and a great texture...really nice with coffee.
It's good to hear you limit sugars, but keep your eye on carbohydrate intake which is (unfortunately for you) all rice is. sugars and carbohydrates go into the blood as the same thing (glucose) and whilst some carbs have a lower (better) glycaemic index than sugars there're still not that good for someone who is pre of full diabetic generally. I'm sure your doctors know what they're talking about though, so follow their advice and hope they don't get it wrong.
In respect of activity, a brisk 45 minute walk every day will work wonders with your blood glucose levels. Give it a try.
That does sound wonderful. My father also likes blueberry cheesecakes, and he has diabetes so it's been a long time since he's had one.
Thank you for the tips. I have reduced my overall intake of rice as a whole, but I still eat it with most meals. I will try to find time to get that brisk walk in though.
Good luck, hopefully things don't progress too quickly and you'll able to manage the situation.
Thank you very much. I hope so too.
I am not very fond of sweets. Something in my favor because I might eat some at a certain time but I don't depend on it. I like pastries but when I overdo it I feel like I reject them. What I do like a lot is eating at home, I'm used to that and it's hard for me to eat something fast. I don't adapt easily to not having a good plate of beans. Hahaha
But I'm not as active as I would like to be. My work is mostly sitting, so I'm bad at incorporating exercise routines and being consistent. I prefer to walk in the woods and climb mountains but no more doing the same exercises every day, what if up and down and up and down again. I wish I could do that.
I'm not really all that fond of sweet things either which is why I love this cheesecake as it's not overly sweet...the sweetest things in it are the blueberries. It's great with a coffee.
I tend to eat at home a lot these days, it's easier with my eating requirements although I go out too, it's just a little more complicated to work out what to eat. Eating at home suits me fine though.
Having a sedentary job, (not moving much) can be problematic so consistent exercise is good and walking is one of the best ways to stay active. It seems you have a good balance when it comes to eating and exercise habits so well done on that, and thanks for commenting.
I'm trying to get back the discipline I had when I was younger for these things. I do have good discipline when I'm at the store by not buying these things but my weakness is donuts, specifically crullers if you've ever heard of those! Damn, when I wake up early to go to my part-time job on the weekends, grabbing a cruller with my coffee is the shit but I know I really shouldn't be doing it lol.
The blueberry cheese cake looks delicious dude!
Donuts are legit, but one must approach with caution I guess. I went through a period when I had probably way too many although I was rather active at the time so it wasn't too bad; I guess it's a sometimes food for me thse days, like cheesecake...which, by the way, was awesome.
My dear Galen, when you can and if you want, eat that blueberry cheesecake and enjoy, I understand you, my husband is an insulin diabetic dependent on 21 units of Lantus daily for 28 years and until "today's sun" he eats his favorite apple pie every time he can. Life is life and one dies of something.
Yeah, many take the got to die of something approach, but that's not my way. I prefer to show some discipline I guess. Apple pie is good though, of that there's no doubt.
How delicious it is to enjoy noodles, which is the most favorite thing, even other fast food is quite delicious to enjoy. However, gradually I had to limit everything that was delicious, being overweight made me increasingly afraid of enjoying unhealthy dishes. Consuming more foods with fiber, rich in protein and adequate nutrition, makes me believe that I am living a better life. There are things you need to enjoy when you occasionally want them, right? Try enjoying them at least once a month, it will definitely be better and it will save us stress.
The food we eat has repercussions, good or bad, and I guess we need to make the decision on what we eat based on what repercussions we are happy to accept and those that we will accept even if they are negative. Something that is not so good for us in moderation (occasionally/rarely) is ok...it's when those foods are consumed constantly where things an spiral out of control.
I agree with you, therefore we must control ourselves in consuming healthy food.
Trust me, @galenkp, I know exactly what you meant on this post... Peaceful, lovely and enjoyable photo. Sometime, friend, the simplest thing make an enormous effect on us. Like the delicious blueberry bakery sweet.
I prefer doing simple things over complicated ones and there's little more simple than enjoying a pastry and coffee right?
Exactly!! By the way, that sweet looks delicious, haha
Yum !
I am a sugar addict. I think I was born one. I don't know if that is really possible, but my history from a very young age seems to support it.
I love sweets of many kinds. I resist a lot, but not nearly enough. Although I love cakes and pastries and the such, candy is my drug. The closer it is to a lump of sugar, the more I like it.
So.... as happens with someone who does not resist enough, I have known I have diabetes for several years. It's terrible because now I should not have anything I crave, sweets nor breads..... breads ....breads....I love them too. I have probably resisted breads enough and other high carb foodie foods, but I have not resisted enough candy.
It's stupid. I've been an adult for many years and I know better, but it might as well be legal crack that can be obtained cheaply on any corner.
I'm sure my death will come sooner than it should have had too because of it. You would think that fact would scare anyone away from any addiction.... and yet.....
Oh yeah, yum is the word!
You raise some points I have thought about myself. I guess those deliberations ended in me committing to doing the right thing and so I limit the intake of certain foods, have eliminated others and use injections for those times I feel I want to have a little of something that my system won't deal well with without the injection. I seem to find a balance, health and the ability to have a little of the things I really love but should not have. I guess I thought about the dying thing and decided I'd not like to tempt fate right now...I'm sure there'll be a time when I simply don't care though. I'm not afraid of dying in the least bit, but I have some life to live still so I'll hang around.
My satisfoodation comes from this little beauty right here. I'll have one piece every 3 to 4 months or so. It's just pure chocolatey sin. And it's a huge piece too, you can't finish it in one go, you shouldn't actually. 😬
That looks bloody good...I think I'd be ok with a big slice of that!
Some say it's too sweet, but I think it's perfect. I don't even like sweet food that much; I prefer spicy food, but this cake right here just hits the spot.
I'm not much of a sweet tooth really, I mean I don't like super sweet things mostly, but now and then it's ok.
Now and then is the way, occasionally. Having really sweet confectionery on the regular ruins the experience and taste for me.
Yep, it's a good treat to have, a little reward or something right?
A sweet reward indeed, that's how I've always looked at it.
Lifegevity and Satisfoodation ;) Good words!
I try to limit sugar. I'm sure in moderation it is fine, but as you know it is incredibly addictive. I've read before that it is like crack cocaine in our system and I can believe it. We allow ourselves a cookie or a few M&Ms, but as soon as they are gone our brain demands MORE.
No...I'd rather just avoid awakening that craving, so I avoid sugar as much as I can. Many bad foods seem like that: eating them just makes me want more of them. As a result, I don't let myself cheat often.
I suppose the one thing I limit but do allow myself to enjoy from time to time is coffee. You may have seen my posts about how coffee leads to horrible migraines for me so I try to avoid it most of the time. Yet I do love it, so I let myself drink some every now and again. A good cup of coffee is simply divine.
Limiting sugar makes sense.
If coffee brings on migraines it's probably best avoided I guess, there's other drinks besides coffee.
It is good that you maintain a healthy diet for your health, instead of seeing it as an obligation we should see it as a healthier lifestyle, I have had many problems with food, especially with sugar and soft drinks since I was very young. At home we were not used to drinking soda every time we ate, I didn't realize the damage I was doing to myself. I remember that I could not even play with my children, I was very tired and my knees hurt a lot and what surprised me the most was my physical change, I was practically unrecognizable, it was then when I decided to change my lifestyle and do more sport and so I try to combine my life between family, work and sport,
It's incredible just how much the food we eat can help or hinder us and I think we should all be actively seeking to eat a diet commensurate to our individual health needs and to help us lead healthier lives in general.
I like the word satisfoodation!!!
Hmm I don't have foods that I limit myself.. But lately I think I have been munching too much cakes and ice-cream and it's probably a good time to get more exercise to burn off those calories first.
You eat whatever and in quantities you like? You're lucky to be able to do so, although later in your life you may come to regret those decisions. Maybe you'll get lucky though.
Hahaha wait... But that doesn't mean I go all out on a buffet style every single meal. :P
I don't eat alot generally because I get full quite easily, and food can be quite costly especially when dining out. So far, my general health is ok but I am still trying my best to keep fit and exercise when I have time. ;)
I've destroyed buffet's in my day, these days I'm more of a moderate eater. I guess we all need to understand what's right for us now and into the future; better choices are better than bad ones.
Dear Galenk, that blueberry cheesecake looks great, but as you mentioned, you sacrifice a lot of things to keep a good health, and that tartar I guess it makes you doubt whether to taste it or not?
Heating in healthy ways helps support a better life and so I think everyone has a responsibility to seek better ways to sustain their lives and make them as best as possible Starting with a healthy diet is a good place to start.
Sounds like a better option than the sad story I read some years ago about this kid (actually a young adult but anyone younger than me is a "kid") who had a health condition (may have been the same one by the sounds of things) from very young and as soon as they hit 18 they apparently decided that "living their best life" meant they were going to cast off all the unwanted restrictions their health conditions imposed and just do and eat whatever the hell they wanted. It didn't end well.
Assuming I like the food I don't limit anything aside from the one thing I'm anaphylactically allergic to (I don't eat that at all, and it is fortunately very easy to avoid). I have a bigger problem with remembering to eat ^_^;
Good blueberry cheesecake then? :D
Hmm, yeah that, bugger it you gotta die of something, attitude is often self-fulfilling and ends badly.
Lolled at remembering to eat, and yes the blueberry cheesecake was splendid.
When the health situation is complicated, you have to take care of yourself a little more, I would say a lot.
I try to feel what is happening to you, how difficult it is, but you have the strength and the discipline to do it. That doesn't mean that you get tired of having to be attentive every day.
I was thinking about the questions you asked, no, I don't look for satisfaction all the time in food, I see it as something to nourish the body... only once in a while as if it were a craving I indulge in my favourite food, stuffed pasta like ravioli.
I used to find chocolate irresistible until I discovered that my whole family and I are magnesium deficient, I have been taking magnesium for 8 years and chocolate no longer appeals to me.
I don't drink soft drinks, hardly any alcohol, with half a glass of beer I get dizzy haha, I don't eat sugar and hardly any salt, I eat small portions of anything. But not because I restrict myself but because that's the way I am.
What I find most irresistible is Italian food like pasta, but I don't eat much anyway, I just get full quickly hahaha.
I drink a lot of water and a lot of mate!!!
I like to walk, with music and I walk very fast, I climb hills... those things.
My life, whatever life I have, I want it to be as good as possible.
You'll be fine Galen, I guess so!
So you're happy to eat food you don't like just because it's nourishing? You don't like eating what you like eating?
I guess we all have different ways of living
I meant that if I have to eat something because it's good... then I do, but normally I like everything. I don't like sweet potato for example or lentils... I don't eat them hahaha. Everything else is fine.
I like almost everything, .... it's time to eat an ice cream, I just had lunch, that's right!!!!
Ah ok, that makes more sense.
Yes, I'm still awake, I had a lot to do.
Good night, time to rest. See you later!
Today was mother's day in Argentina, and now I celebrate it twice with my mother, there was cake, ice cream etc. We enjoyed it a lot.
Bye bye!
I also keep balance in my diet but I don't follow kinda strict diet plan. But yeah, I have modified my habits of consuming cold drinks. Moreover it's also thanks to me that I never ever touched alcohol and cigarettes.
By the way, I don't know how this cheese cake taste like?
May be it would be like cheese strips which I ate couple of days back.
Satisfoodation is really a cool word. You should be linguistic. 😂
A cheesecake doesn't taste like cheese...you'll have to try it for yourself to understand, someday you may have the chance. I would have thought Gloria Jeans have some, they do here.
Here,in Islamabad there is branch of Gloria jeans I will surely go there.
Give it a try, they may not have any but you'll never know if you don't go there.
Haha, I love this piece. I have foods I don't take, though. Taking fried plantain, or anything fried, is not good for my health, but that doesn't mean I don't take them. I do, just in moderation.
Speaking of which, it has been a long while since I have eaten plantain. No wonder my keyboard went for it first, lol.
It hurts when you have to take injections when eating things you like, and it is all because of this;
I love the meaning by the way and agree with its usage because you said so. Lol.
Yep, moderation is a good thing and sometimes I guess there's total abstinence on things that aren't good for us. I think if one totally denies oneself foods that one likes it could lead to unhappiness and depression but eating them could be worse so I guess common sense needs to come into it.
Lifegevity is probably everyone's priority but some don't work very well towards gaining it.
Yes, I agree there's always need for common sense.
I am a fond of fast food specially zinger burger and pizza. But I have to be careful because it can be dangerous for health if consumed too much.
And when I am hungry (very hungry) I would be saying any good food will be irresistible for me.
And I am thinking what kind of taste this blueberry cheesecake has? Is it sweet?
I haven't even tasted any blueberry throughout my life. So I really don't know it's taste.
You'll have to find yourself a blueberry cheesecake and give it a try. Let me know how it goes.
Yeah sure. Will be searching for it.
It's hard to deprive yourself of tasty foods, my wife is celiac and goes through something similar regarding food, but health and quality of life are the most important thing. I wish you good health, we still have a long way to go!
Sometimes it's not until a problem arises that someone makes better choices although I think many people should be making better choices before the problems arise.
Likewise, sometimes we do not value what we have or what we have at our disposal, as you yourself say, until a problem arises. We have to live and enjoy every moment, and above all try to do what we like, that is what we take with us in the end.
Theodore Isaac Rubin left there a fantastic phrase for us and we really should follow this in our life.
I'd really like to meet your friend and taste it as well as it looks so good.
That blueberry cheesecake is a very tasty one indeed, I've had a few of them (more than a few) and feel I'm an expert on it. Lol.
Ya 100%! going to go for some amazing food for dinner today and will write about it. free flow pizza here I come! I'm eating til im full and probably getting an oreo milkshake as well hehe.
Most food is amazing. I love a lot of types of food. On side note though, just keep durian and eggplant and weird exotic foods (scorpion, etc) away from me haha these are probably the food I will try to avoid.
I was going to make home made pizza tonight but hanged my mind, it's a bit cool outside where my pizza oven is. I'll do it mid-week though. Looking forward to it.
Durian...yeah man doesn't smell the best...I've not tried it for that reason.
I hope your pizza is good and you've had a good weekend.
Isn't it good to have a nice warm pizza on a cold day? Some warm soup based food like ramen/udon is good too for that type of weather. It's ashame Malaysia only knows humid and hot with some days that rain.
Durian is a big hit or miss. You either love it or you don't like it. Despite the smell people love it. I'll never understand why as I tried it before and it didn't taste particularly great but it wasn't bad to the point I would throw up either.
My pizza better be good! They have the Gordon Ramsay name behind them! If not I will just do my thing and leave some bad reviews XD.
It is, but I can't be bothered doing it, I've had a challenging day but just didn't want to say so.
oh no sorry to hear that, at least it means it was most likely a fruitful day right. Enjoy a good rest then you worked hard today!
