The guard acted a kingmakers for the first time when they found Claudius hiding behind a curtain after the assassination of Caligula, and proclaimed him Caesar. I mentioned in previous posts the guard’s sinister role in the year of four emperors and the auctioning of the Empire. Gibbon comments specifically on the danger of a private army:
Such formidable servants are always necessary, but often fatal to the throne of despotism. By thus introducing the Praetorian guards as it were into the palace and the senate, the emperors taught them to perceive their own strength, and the weakness of the civil government; to view the vices of their masters with familiar contempt, and to lay aside that reverential awe,
which distance only, and mystery, can preserve towards an imaginary power. In the luxurious idleness of an opulent city, their pride was nourished by the sense of their irresistible weight; nor was it possible to conceal from them, that the person of the sovereign, the authority of the senate, the public treasure, and the seat of empire, were all in their hands. To divert the Praetorian bands from these dangerous reflections, the firmest and best established princes were obliged to mix blandishments with commands, rewards with punishments, to flatter their pride, indulge their pleasures, connive at their irregularities, and to purchase their precarious faith by a liberal donative; which, since the elevation of Claudius, was enacted as a legal claim, on the accession of every new emperor.
By 284 A.D. Diocletian had removed the Praetorians from the palace and substituted his own version of a protection force. Finally, in 312, Constantine defeated a guard force supporting the usurper Maxentius, disbanded the guard, and demolished its camp in Rome.
So we have described the first of the causes of the fall of the Roman Empire according to Edward Gibbon. We’ve seen that when you create a private army to protect yourself from the public army, you lose the separation that maintains the mystique of the supreme leader. When the private army is able to observe the leader’s humanness close up, they may decide he’s no better than them.

Hadrian reigned from 117-138. More a thinker than a fighter. Like Marcus Aurelius in many ways. Son of a cousin of Trajan, taken in as Trajan’s ward to learn discipline, Hadrian later commanded the fifth legion on the Danube. When Nerva died Hadrian was the first to give Trajan the news by outrunning others carrying the message. His succession to emperor was obscure. Trajan never said publicly that he intended Hadrian as his successor and when he died, the message naming Hadrian was signed by the empress who claimed Trajan was too ill to write. She was known to favor Hadrian over other candidates. The new Caesar’s reign began badly when he had four ex-consuls killed for plotting his overthrow. The Roman people never forgave him for this offence.
At the end of his life when faced with the succession issue he adopted Lucius Ceionius Commodus, but Lucius died of tuberculosis a year later. Now Hadrian executed a twin adoption. As Caesar he named Titus Aurelius Fulvus Boionius Arrius Antonius who would become Antonius Pius. He also required Antonius to adopt two young men to become his successors: Lucius Ceionius Commodus, son of the emperor designate who had died and Marcus Annius Verus grandson of a close friend of Hadrian.
Hadrian was very ill at the end of his life and had to be prevented from committing suicide on several occasions. He finally succumbed on July 10th, 138 A.D.

I was in court one day, and this kid looked starved, frightened, and mentally tortured. He was one of the two alleged box-cutter terrorists. It turned out he was not Muslim but Christian. I believe his parents pleaded with the New York Times, and they were trying to find the kid to interview him. He had a paper and did not trust the court-appointed lawyers who are professional in ensuring the government keeps a 99% conviction rate. It takes talent to lose every case. I never met a single court-appointed lawyer who was honest or would actually defend their client. If they cared, they would never get on the panel to represent people. They fix elections, and they fix courts as well.

Rome had two houses in its legislature: the Senate and the Assembly. The Senate was a aristocratic body made up of patrician families who held a connection to the three ancient tribes of Rome. The assembly (there were several of these over time) was a public gathering of the people who voted individually for candidates or laws. The Senate had 300 members for most of its existence, while the assembly comprised all property owning citizens who attended its meetings. The chief magistrates of the Republic were the consuls. Two were elected for a one year term and had the right of veto over each other. This veto right was designed to prevent an abuse of power.

Virtually every drug dealer who had a pile of cash said the same thing – 50% of the amount the Feds took was always missing. The court-appointed lawyers tell them to keep their mouths shut for more money means more time.

Bessie Coleman was born on January 26, 1892, in Atlanta, Texas, as one of 13 children in a family where her parents, Susan and George Coleman, were sharecroppers. Her father, of Native American and African American descent, left the family in search of better opportunities when Bessie was young. Growing up in a large family meant that Bessie and her siblings had to contribute to household responsibilities and labor from an early age. Despite the challenges they faced, her mother strived to provide for her children and instilled the values of hard work and education.
At the age of 12, Coleman began attending the Missionary Baptist Church, which fostered her spiritual growth and provided a supportive community. After completing her basic education, Bessie moved to Oklahoma to attend the Oklahoma Colored Agricultural and Normal University, now known as Langston University. Financial constraints, however, hampered her educational journey, leading her to complete only one term. Eventually, in 1915, Coleman relocated to Chicago, where she lived with her brothers and worked as a manicurist, all while nurturing her newfound passion for aviation influenced by the stories of World War I pilots.
After returning to the United States, Coleman aimed to establish a flying school for African Americans but found her niche in stunt flying and parachuting instead. In 1922, she made history by becoming the first African American woman in America to conduct a public flight. Her daring performances captivated audiences and showcased her exceptional skills, earning her a place as a prominent aviator of her time. Bessie Coleman’s pioneering efforts inspired countless women and people of color, leaving a lasting legacy in the field of aviation that continues to resonate today.
Moreover, Coleman's impact is evident in her commitment to advocating for the inclusion of African Americans in aviation. Even though her life was tragically cut short, her ambition to establish a flight school for Black pilots reflected her dedication to empowering others. Bessie Coleman’s performances as a stunt pilot and her public demonstrations served as a testament to her skill and fearlessness, ultimately challenging negative stereotypes associated with race and gender in aviation. Her legacy lives on, serving as a meaningful reminder of the power of perseverance and the importance of representation in all fields.
After moving to Chicago at the age of 23, Bessie lived with her brothers, which provided her with a support system as she navigated her new life. Though she worked as a manicurist, she found inspiration in stories about World War I pilots, igniting her passion for flying. The bond with her siblings and their encouragement helped reinforce her belief in pursuing her dreams despite facing significant racial and gender barriers. Although Coleman never married, her relationships with her family and community were instrumental in shaping her ambitions, pushing her to become the groundbreaking aviator she is remembered as today.
Coleman's commitment to her craft and her status as a trailblazer garnered her significant attention, translating into potential sponsorships and engagements. Her performances, which included aerial tricks and stunts, contributed to a growing fascination with aviation during the 1920s. Although she aspired to start her own flying school for African Americans upon her return to the United States, her career was tragically cut short due to a fatal accident in 1926. Despite earning a relatively modest salary during her lifetime, Bessie Coleman’s legacy continues to inspire future generations of aviators and women in aviation.
The log of attempts to defeat Spartacus and his men follows:
The praetor Publius Varinus sent his lieutenant Furius against the rebels with 2,000 men and they are defeated.
Cossinius was sent to give advice and counsel to Varinius but he and his men are intercepted while in camp and killed.
Spartacus decides to march his men to the Alps and allow them to go their separate ways – Gauls to the west to their homeland and Thracians to the east. But there arose a disagreement on this because Crixus, the Gaul, did not want to return to his homeland and was content to stay in the Italian peninsula and play the brigand. In the fall of 73 B.C. the rebels returned to the south.
Both are utterly defeated by Spartacus at Petelia.
At this juncture Spartacus men, tired of retreat, demand that the rebel army return and fight the Romans to the death. They engage the armies of Crassus and Pompey and are finally defeated. The body of Spartacus is never found.
As the Constitutional Convention approached, however, the founders did additional research to refine their understanding of a republican political system. Two nuanced definitions emerged from this thought process which are commonly labeled puritan and agrarian. Both attempted to address the mortality of republics, that is understanding the causes of their eventual decline. The puritan view, popular in the north, was based almost completely on ancient political theory and held that the longevity of a political system needed to be based on morality – create good citizens and you will create a better government. Men should adhere to a public virtue encompassing firmness, endurance, industry, and dedication to the public good like the Greeks.
Nightingale’s influence extended beyond the battlefield as she authored significant publications that addressed healthcare reform. In 1860, she established St. Thomas' Hospital and the Nightingale Training School for Nurses in London, thereby formalizing nursing education. Her writings, particularly "Notes on Matters Affecting the Health, Efficiency and Hospital Administration of the British Army," not only highlighted the need for reform in military hospitals but also showcased her pioneering use of statistics to promote healthcare improvements. Despite battling chronic illness throughout her later years, Nightingale remained a stalwart advocate for health reform, becoming a revered figure worldwide and inspiring countless women to enter the nursing profession.
Florence Nightingale began her nursing career in 1850 when she enrolled as a nursing student at the Institution of Protestant Deaconesses in Kaiserswerth, Germany. This step marked a significant departure from the expectations of her affluent family and the upper-class society of her time, which frowned upon women pursuing careers. While training, Nightingale honed her skills and established her commitment to nursing as a divine calling, challenging the traditional views on women's roles. Upon returning to England, she secured a position at a Harley Street hospital, where her exemplary performance led to a promotion to superintendent, further solidifying her reputation as a competent and compassionate nurse.
Additionally, Nightingale was a trailblazer for health care reform. Her analytical skills in statistics highlighted critical issues in hospital administration, influencing policies that transformed military and civilian healthcare. With her publication of "Notes on Matters Affecting the Health, Efficiency and Hospital Administration of the British Army" in 1858, she not only brought attention to unsanitary conditions but also provided recommendations that led to the formation of the Royal Commission on the Health of the Army. This initiative ensured that healthcare systems evolved and became more efficient, reflecting her commitment to improving patient care standards.
Despite the societal expectations of her time, Florence Nightingale never married, fully dedicating her life to her nursing vocation. In 1849, she rejected a marriage proposal from Richard Monckton Milnes, a decision rooted in her conviction that her calling was greater than a domestic life. Nightingale often struggled with the expectations placed upon her as a young woman from a wealthy family, which dictated that she should pursue marriage and social activities. However, her strong will and sense of purpose propelled her to forge an unconventional path as a pioneering nurse and health reformer.
Nightingale's writings, particularly "Notes on Matters Affecting the Health, Efficiency and Hospital Administration of the British Army," sparked significant healthcare reforms. Her meticulous research laid the groundwork for institutional changes within the British Army and beyond, promoting better practices in health care.
What were some of her later life achievements?
In her later years, Nightingale published "Notes on Hospitals" in 1859 and continued advocating for health reform from her home due to illness. She was recognized by King Edward with the Order of Merit in 1907 and was the first woman to receive the Freedom of the City of London in 1908.
The longest (over a month) and most contentious debate involved the structure of the legislature. Although a consensus on the bicameral model was achieved fairly quickly, the convention bogged down over the method of representation . The original proposal had both houses elected based on population districts. This plan was opposed by the small states who felt their interests would be dominated by the large states. On the opposite side were those who pointed out the failings of the Articles of Confederation due to deadlocks created from a system which allowed only one vote per state. A compromise was eventually reached when the delegates agreed to set up an equal number of senators for each state and only use the district method for electing representatives.
Again, as in the case of the legislature, the convention got into a heated debate about the length of the president’s term and the method of electing him. An early proposal argued for the president to be elected to one term of seven years, and the delegates labored to balance the time needed by the president to achieve his goals with avoiding a concentration of power in the office. Many term lengths were debated from four years to sixteen years before the convention decided to let the president serve for terms of four years. Then the debate moved to the method of election. Three choices were initially offered: letting the Congress pick the president, letter the state legislatures pick the president, and letting electors chosen by the people elect the president. The latter won out as being the fairest way to allow the people to control who would become president of the land.

Because of the nature of my work, I find it a bit hard to prepare all 3 meals of the day. I try supper, but end up buying something outside for breakfast and lunch.
Prepare things that you can keep on the fridge separated and just put together when you are going to eat or prepare you box to go.
You can set a day to do that. I used to do that but because I was in a residence and needed to spend the less amount of time in the kitchen as possible.

Well, not in practice. At least not in Keychain. I didn't find an option to set or change node.

In the late 1920s, Faulkner's works began to reflect the complexity of his Southern heritage and the intricate tapestry of life in Mississippi. His ability to capture the rhythms of Southern speech and the darker aspects of its history distinguished him as one of the leading literary figures of his time, laying the groundwork for his later accolades, including the Nobel Prize in Literature.

This series utilizes facts we know to be accurate and weaves them into a story designed to entertain. Here we will take a look what history tells us about the revolt (from Plutarch and others) and put it in the context of the Italian geography.
The slave revolt of 73 B.C. began when a group of gladiators (78 to be exact) broke out of the training camp of one Lentulus Badiates in Capua. Most of these men had been captured, held as slaves, and forced to fight for their lives in the arena. Few were Romans, the majority being Gauls, Germans, and Thracians. The gladiators escaped by breaking into the kitchen and stealing the cook’s knives and spits, which they were able to use as weapons to overpower the guards.

During her early nursing career, Nightingale also volunteered at the Middlesex Hospital amidst a cholera outbreak, taking the initiative to enact hygiene practices that significantly reduced the death rate. Her work during this tumultuous period demonstrated the critical need for sanitation in medical settings, something which would later underpin her approach during the Crimean War. Nightingale's dedication to reforming nursing standards and improving patient care would soon capture the attention of influential figures, laying the groundwork for her future contributions to modern nursing and public health. She emerged not only as a skilled nurse but as a pioneering advocate for health care reform, proving that women could excel in professions traditionally dominated by men.

When she and her team of nurses arrived at Scutari, they confronted horrific sanitary conditions that contributed to the death of more soldiers from disease than battle injuries. Her compassionate care earned her the nickname "the Lady with the Lamp," symbolizing hope and dedication in the direst circumstances.
Nightingale’s influence reached beyond her lifetime, serving as an inspiration for future generations of nurses and health reformers. Recognized for her unwavering dedication, she became a symbol of compassion in nursing, earning her titles such as "the Lady with the Lamp." Rome had two houses in its legislature: the Senate and the Assembly.

How did Nightingale influence healthcare reform?

The model learns from these examples by adjusting its internal parameters to minimize errors and improve performance on the training data. The goal is for the model to generalize well to new, unseen data, allowing it to make accurate predictions or take appropriate actions.
Training examples can be in various forms, such as text, images, audio, or videos, depending on the task at hand. The quality and diversity of these examples play a crucial role in determining the performance and reliability of the trained AI model.

BREAKING: Robert F. Kennedy Jr. confirmed as Secretary of Health and Human Services.
What you think about this appointment?
Probably a bad move. Flu seasons will be worse and easy diseases like measles will become more prevalent.
i see, lets hope nothing bad happens.
I imagine measles will show up first. People forget that we just got rid of that so that will come back first with little kids. Gonna suck lol.

And to be clear, I can accept the loss. I am a Dash user, and new supporter of this platform, so just want to be helpful to the community.
Dogecoin’s historic rise from $0.0020 to $0.68 unfolded as a classic five-wave impulsive move, known as Wave (A). This was followed by a prolonged correction, or Wave (B), which kept DOGE in a sideways range for over two years.

Because of the nature of my work, I find it a bit hard to prepare all 3 meals of the day. I try supper, but end up buying something outside for breakfast and lunch.
Have any idea of how to schedule?
Prepare things that you can keep on the fridge separated and just put together when you are going to eat or prepare you box to go.
You can set a day to do that. I used to do that but because I was in a residence and needed to spend the less amount of time in the kitchen as possible.
