The U.S. Air Force is exploring the use of the Harpoon anti-ship missile on its F-16s, signaling a potential shift in its approach to naval warfare.
The 53rd Test and Evaluation Group’s Detachment 3 demonstrated the crucial ability to rapidly integrate new weapons by conducting an operational taxi test with a U.S. Navy Harpoon missile on an F-16 Fighting Falcon at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada.
Gateway system enables missile integration
Instead of taking years, this test proved that weapons integration can be accelerated without costly aircraft modifications, allowing leaders to rapidly deploy advanced weaponry, outpace adversaries, and enhance operational flexibility across multiple platforms.
The test team employed a gateway system to link the Harpoon missile with the F-16, enabling seamless communication without modifying either platform. Acting as a translator, the system allowed the jet to recognize the missile and transmit commands. This approach streamlined integration and reduced the time needed to equip the aircraft with new weapon capabilities.
Siemens Energy brings decades of experience in conventional equipment.
A Germany-based world leader in nuclear steam turbine technology is set to bolster Rolls-Royce’ small reactor reactors (SMR). Siemens Energy has collaborated with Rolls-Royce SMR to supply steam turbines, generators, and other auxiliary systems for the British manufacturer’s planned Generation 3+ modular nuclear power plants.
Considered a promising technology for the future of nuclear energy, the SMRs can play a key role in the success of the energy transition as they are more compact, safer, and more cost-efficient than conventional nuclear power plants.
Currently, Rolls-Royce SMR is developing a “mini nuclear power plant” that can be operational much faster than traditionally built plants, thanks to its standardized, modular design.
Electrical output of up to 470 megawatts
The company has revealed that its pressurized water reactors are designed to achieve an electrical output of up to 470 megawatts, enough to supply approximately 1.1 million households with electricity.
“We are currently experiencing a global renaissance of nuclear energy. Numerous countries are turning to nuclear technology to produce low-emission electricity, and small modular reactors will play a key role in this,” said Karim Amin, a member of the Siemens Energy Executive Board.
The biosensor uses an enzyme-based biofuel cell, antibodies called aptamers and a bacterial elimination mechanism to make water decontamination faster and easier.
A team of researchers has developed a new self-powered biosensor that can detect Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria in drinking water and destroy them in situ (on site). This discovery could have enormous ramifications for providing safe drinking water worldwide.
Traditional methods, such as culturing or polymerase chain reaction (PCR), are time-consuming and labor-intensive. They also require specialized equipment and trained staff.
Biosensors (devices that use living organisms or biological molecules) are faster, but tend to need external power sources to function. They also have the irksome tendency to degrade over time. The new sensor, however, addresses many of these issues by deploying three main components to generate its own energy.
Three components
The first, an enzymatic biofuel cell (EBFC), provides power for the sensor by using enzymes to generate electricity from biochemical reactions. It uses glucose oxidase (GOx) to break down glucose, producing electrons (electricity) and hydrogen peroxide. However, this enzyme loses stability over time.
To solve this, the team encapsulated it in a hollow metal-organic framework (MOF) called ZIF-8, which protects from damage over time and maintains efficiency and stability under different conditions.
Microsoft said service was restored following an outage that left tens of thousands of users unable to access their Outlook email accounts and other programs.
"We're investigating an issue in which users may be unable to access Outlook features and services," Microsoft 365 Status, the official Microsoft account for 365 service incidents, said in a post on X.
Services such as Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Teams, Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Azure were reported down as of about 3:30 p.m. ET. More than 37,000 individuals reported an Outlook outage and roughly 24,000 reported an outage in the tech company's 365 service, according to Downdetector, while roughly 150 users reported their Teams accounts were down.
The outages were most highly concentrated in the New York, Chicago and Los Angeles areas, per the Downdetector reports.
Users also flooded social media site X complaining about their inability to access their Outlook emails, prompting concerns of a global Microsoft outage.
Microsoft reported on its service health update page that the company said, "Everything is up and running."
In a Microsoft 365 Status update posted on X, the company said "it confirmed that service was restored."
The second is the use of antibodies called aptamers in the biosensor. These short strands of DNA can specifically bind to parts of the E. coli‘s exterior. According to the team, aptamers are linked to silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) which block glucose from reaching the enzyme until E. coli is detected.
When E. coli is present, the aptamer binds to it, triggering a reaction to the silica barrier, allowing glucose to reach the enzyme. The oxidation reaction produces electrons, generating an electrical signal confirming bacteria’s presence.
The third component is a bacterial elimination mechanism that kills any E. coli cells the sensor finds. This is achieved using a targeted dose of hydrogen peroxide, a byproduct of the sensor’s biofuel cell. This oxidizes the silver nanoparticles, releasing silver ions (Ag+) renowned for their antibacterial properties. They are so effective that they can kill 99.9% of bacteria in just a few hours.

Steam turbines and generators
The company has revealed that it has been a supplier and service provider of components for the so-called “power island,” the non-nuclear part of the power plant. Siemens Energy’s solutions for nuclear power plants include steam turbines and generators with outputs ranging from 20 MW to 1,900 MW, as well as operational control technology and control systems.
Proven track record in nuclear steam turbines
“The turbine systems are a vital part of the Rolls-Royce SMR power plant, and we are delighted to be working with Siemens Energy, a global leader in energy systems who have significant experience and a proven track record in nuclear steam turbines,” said Rolls-Royce SMR chief executive.

Rolls-Royce SMR maintains that it offers a radically different approach to delivering new nuclear power, with each plant providing enough low-carbon electricity to power a million homes for more than 60 years.

New anti-surface role for F-16 with Harpoon missile
While foreign air forces have equipped F-16s with Harpoon anti-ship missiles, the U.S. Air Force has traditionally not used this anti-surface weapon, which is more common on U.S. Navy carrier-based aircraft. However, this approach seems to be changing.
The Harpoon is a long-range, all-weather anti-ship missile developed by Boeing and designed for air and ship launches. It has a diameter of 13.5 inches (34.3 cm) and weighs around 1,160 pounds (526 kg). The missile’s length is 182.2 inches (4.63 meters) for ship launches and 151.5 inches (3.85 meters) for air launches.
The Harpoon uses mid-course guidance and an active radar seeker to track and hit surface targets. It can be launched from ships, submarines, shore batteries, and aircraft. The Air Force B-52H bombers can carry up to 12 Harpoons. In 1998, the Harpoon Block II upgrade added GPS-assisted navigation, improving both land attack and anti-ship capabilities.
While the Harpoon is being replaced by newer missiles like the Naval Strike Missile (NSM) and the AGM-158C LRASM, which have been ordered by the U.S. Navy and Air Force, it is still in production and continues to equip various ships and aircraft, which makes it a reliable long-range strike weapon for both current and future operations.

Firefly Aerospace achieves first lunar landing
According to NASA acting Administrator Janet Petro, this achievement “demonstrates how NASA and American companies are leading the way in space exploration for the benefit of all”. The lander carried 10 NASA science and technology instruments, which will operate on the lunar surface for about one lunar day—approximately 14 Earth days.
“We have already learned many lessons—and the technological and science demonstrations onboard Firefly’s Blue Ghost Mission 1 will improve our ability to not only discover more science, but to ensure the safety of our spacecraft instruments for future human exploration—both in the short term and long term,” Petro explained.
Following its launch from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center on January 15, Blue Ghost traveled over 2.8 million miles, transmitted more than 27 gigabytes of data, and supported multiple science operations. Among its achievements, the lander’s Lunar GNSS Receiver Experiment successfully tracked signals from the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) at a record-breaking distance of 246,000 miles, demonstrating that the same positioning technology used on Earth can also function on the moon.
NASA invested $101 million for the delivery and an additional $44 million for the science and technology aboard the lander. This marks the third mission under the agency’s commercial lunar delivery program, designed to foster a competitive lunar economy while gathering crucial data ahead of astronaut missions later this decade.

Officials announced that volcanic activity around Naples, Italy has brought an ancient Roman villa to the surface in Lake Fusaro.
A geological phenomenon has given rise to an ancient Roman village complex lying in Lake Fusaro’s waters.
Josi Gerardo Della Ragione, mayor of Bacoli, recently announced on social media that walls had been discovered in Lake Fusaro near Naples, Italy.
The Phlegraean Fields sits within a collapsed caldera, namely a volcanic area formed by several volcanic edifices, which includes the Solfatara volcano, well known for its fumaroles (vents from which hot volcanic gases and vapours are emitted), reported Heritage Daily.
A Roman villa surfaces thanks to a volcano
Most famously, the supervolcano Vesuvius obliterated Pompei, though some Neapolitans would phrase it differently: the volcano brought the city eternal life. However, Vesuvius is only one major outlet in a field of volcanic activity, and their belief might have been proven right.
In the north of the city, Lake Fusaro has been experiencing geological shifts because of the active and volatile activity happening beneath the ground. Locals refer to it as one of the five lakes on Campi Flegrei as an inferno, as in hell, a swamp of sulfuric gases.
The Earth’s surface has been rising due to the flow of magma or hydrothermal fluids, a phenomenon known as bradyseism.

Repurposing solid-state electrolytes
The team repurposed solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) as membranes for aqueous lithium extraction. SSEs are materials typically used in solid-state batteries.
The unique structure of SSEs, originally designed for rapid lithium ion conduction in the absence of liquids or other ions, proved remarkably effective at separating lithium from other ions and water in mixtures.
“The challenge is not just about increasing lithium production but about doing so in a way that is both sustainable and economically viable,” stated Menachem Elimelech, the study‘s corresponding author.
This “molecular sieve” excludes water, larger ions like sodium, and even magnesium ions due to their incompatible charge and size.
While the presence of competing ions did reduce lithium flux by occupying surface sites, the researchers are confident that further material engineering can address this issue.
Broader applications for EVs
This breakthrough could help to secure a stable supply of lithium for the growing electric vehicle market.
“By integrating SSEs into electrodialysis systems, we could enable direct lithium extraction from a range of aqueous sources, reducing the need for large evaporation ponds and chemical-intensive purification steps,” said Patel.
However, one major drawback of perovskite is its limited lifespan—lasting only about 5% as long as a silicon cell. Perovskite cells begin to deteriorate after just one year of use as compared to silicon cells which endure for 20 years. The material is particularly sensitive to high summer temperatures and can break down before providing significant energy savings.
To address this, Correa-Baena’s lab has developed a new technology to stabilize perovskite solar cells, which are constructed similarly to batteries.
Enhancing solar cells with titanium treatment
The perovskite solar cells built by Correa-Baena and his team have a positive and a negative electrode, with the perovskite layer placed between them. Before adding the positive electrode on top, the researchers exposed the perovskite to titanium gas in a light vacuum. This process, called vapor-phase infiltration, incorporates titanium into the top layer of the solar cell. The technology is currently under patent review.
Whatever the case, this new chip is certainly a huge breakthrough that could help connect the most remote parts of the world to the World Wide Web, where traditional internet connections are infeasible.
“Today, about 3 billion people are still unconnected, and there is a dire need to bring them online,” Taara General Manager Mahesh Krishnaswamy told Wired. He added that even connected people have abysmally slow speeds, barely fast enough to support streaming.
Other initiatives, like Starlink, are significant but don’t solve all the problems, as in denser areas, many people have to share the transmission, and each gets less bandwidth and slower speeds. “We can offer 10, if not 100 times more bandwidth to an end user than a typical Starlink antenna, and do it for a fraction of the cost,” he added.

Researchers have developed a stable silicon-free solar panel using perovskite cells, incorporating titanium into the top layer through vapor-phase infiltration.
Solar energy is fast becoming one of the most important sources of electricity generation in the US, with 7% of Americans using it to power their homes. However, while solar power affords a viable and green alternative to traditional energy production methods, scientists are still working to improve the efficiency of the solar panel manufacturing process.
Solar panels consist of numerous solar cells, typically made from silicon. Although silicon is the standard material, its production and processing are energy-intensive, making setting up of new manufacturing facilities costly.
While scientists in the US have long been aware of the need to come up with new, cost-effective material to boost solar cell production domestically, a team of researchers from Georgia Institute of Technology’s School of Materials Science and Engineering may just have come up with a solution.
New materials to increase output
Led by associate professor Juan Pablo Correa-Baena, the researchers have spent years exploring perovskite crystals as an alternative to silicon. Composed of iodine atoms, lead, and organic elements, perovskite is a promising and efficient replacement, offering performance on par with silicon.
“We’re developing technologies that we can easily produce without spending a ton of money on expensive equipment,” said Correa-Baena in a statement released by Georgia Tech.
The new chip should be ready for use in 2026 and could find use in autonomous vehicles as well as at home.
Google has released more information about its highly anticipated Taara high-speed, light internet chip. Promising to deliver speeds of up to 20Gbps per second, this new chip could redefine how we all connect and use the internet.
X, Alphabet’s moonshot factory, has been developing the Taara chip for many years. Now, with this new silicon photonic chip, all that hard work has finally paid off.
Alphabet explains that this chip can transmit data through the air using beams of light. The new chip is a significant improvement over its predecessor, namely that it has dispensed with the need for a complicated series of mirrors and other light direction-changing hardware.
The chip functions similarly to traditional fiber optic cable, using light to carry data, but without the physical cable.
Lightning-fast internet coming
The new chip can use advanced software to help steer beams of light to where they are needed. Furthermore, it is considerably smaller than its predecessor.
The original Taara Lightbridge technology was roughly the size of a traffic light; the new chip is approximately the size of a fingernail, offering a substantial increase in convenience.
Taara was initially developed for X’s Project Loon internet broadcasting balloons. However, Alphabet shut that project down in 2021 to focus on the Taara chip alone.
The chip, or its predecessor, has even been tested to beam broadband across the Congo River and the streets of Nairobi.

Traditional methods, such as culturing or polymerase chain reaction (PCR), are time-consuming and labor-intensive. They also require specialized equipment and trained staff.

Biosensors (devices that use living organisms or biological molecules) are faster, but tend to need external power sources to function. They also have the irksome tendency to degrade over time. The new sensor, however, addresses many of these issues by deploying three main components to generate its own energy.
Three components
The first, an enzymatic biofuel cell (EBFC), provides power for the sensor by using enzymes to generate electricity from biochemical reactions. It uses glucose oxidase (GOx) to break down glucose, producing electrons (electricity) and hydrogen peroxide. However, this enzyme loses stability over time.
To solve this, the team encapsulated it in a hollow metal-organic framework (MOF) called ZIF-8, which protects from damage over time and maintains efficiency and stability under different conditions.

Microsoft said service was restored following an outage that left tens of thousands of users unable to access their Outlook email accounts and other programs.
"We're investigating an issue in which users may be unable to access Outlook features and services," Microsoft 365 Status, the official Microsoft account for 365 service incidents, said in a post on X.
Services such as Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Teams, Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Azure were reported down as of about 3:30 p.m. ET. More than 37,000 individuals reported an Outlook outage and roughly 24,000 reported an outage in the tech company's 365 service, according to Downdetector, while roughly 150 users reported their Teams accounts were down.

When E. coli is present, the aptamer binds to it, triggering a reaction to the silica barrier, allowing glucose to reach the enzyme. The oxidation reaction produces electrons, generating an electrical signal confirming bacteria’s presence.
The third component is a bacterial elimination mechanism that kills any E. coli cells the sensor finds. This is achieved using a targeted dose of hydrogen peroxide, a byproduct of the sensor’s biofuel cell. This oxidizes the silver nanoparticles, releasing silver ions (Ag+) renowned for their antibacterial properties. They are so effective that they can kill 99.9% of bacteria in just a few hours.

Steam turbines and generators
The company has revealed that it has been a supplier and service provider of components for the so-called “power island,” the non-nuclear part of the power plant. Siemens Energy’s solutions for nuclear power plants include steam turbines and generators with outputs ranging from 20 MW to 1,900 MW, as well as operational control technology and control systems.

New anti-surface role for F-16 with Harpoon missile

Firefly Aerospace achieves first lunar landing
According to NASA acting Administrator Janet Petro, this achievement “demonstrates how NASA and American companies are leading the way in space exploration for the benefit of all”. The lander carried 10 NASA science and technology instruments, which will operate on the lunar surface for about one lunar day—approximately 14 Earth days.
“We have already learned many lessons—and the technological and science demonstrations onboard Firefly’s Blue Ghost Mission 1 will improve our ability to not only discover more science, but to ensure the safety of our spacecraft instruments for future human exploration—both in the short term and long term,” Petro explained.
Following its launch from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center on January 15, Blue Ghost traveled over 2.8 million miles, transmitted more than 27 gigabytes of data, and supported multiple science operations. Among its achievements, the lander’s Lunar GNSS Receiver Experiment successfully tracked signals from the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) at a record-breaking distance of 246,000 miles, demonstrating that the same positioning technology used on Earth can also function on the moon.

Josi Gerardo Della Ragione, mayor of Bacoli, recently announced on social media that walls had been discovered in Lake Fusaro near Naples, Italy.

Repurposing solid-state electrolytes
The team repurposed solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) as membranes for aqueous lithium extraction. SSEs are materials typically used in solid-state batteries.
The unique structure of SSEs, originally designed for rapid lithium ion conduction in the absence of liquids or other ions, proved remarkably effective at separating lithium from other ions and water in mixtures.
“The challenge is not just about increasing lithium production but about doing so in a way that is both sustainable and economically viable,” stated Menachem Elimelech, the study‘s corresponding author.
This “molecular sieve” excludes water, larger ions like sodium, and even magnesium ions due to their incompatible charge and size.
While the presence of competing ions did reduce lithium flux by occupying surface sites, the researchers are confident that further material engineering can address this issue.
Broader applications for EVs
This breakthrough could help to secure a stable supply of lithium for the growing electric vehicle market.
“By integrating SSEs into electrodialysis systems, we could enable direct lithium extraction from a range of aqueous sources, reducing the need for large evaporation ponds and chemical-intensive purification steps,” said Patel.
However, one major drawback of perovskite is its limited lifespan—lasting only about 5% as long as a silicon cell. Perovskite cells begin to deteriorate after just one year of use as compared to silicon cells which endure for 20 years. The material is particularly sensitive to high summer temperatures and can break down before providing significant energy savings.
To address this, Correa-Baena’s lab has developed a new technology to stabilize perovskite solar cells, which are constructed similarly to batteries.
Enhancing solar cells with titanium treatment
The perovskite solar cells built by Correa-Baena and his team have a positive and a negative electrode, with the perovskite layer placed between them. Before adding the positive electrode on top, the researchers exposed the perovskite to titanium gas in a light vacuum. This process, called vapor-phase infiltration, incorporates titanium into the top layer of the solar cell. The technology is currently under patent review.
Whatever the case, this new chip is certainly a huge breakthrough that could help connect the most remote parts of the world to the World Wide Web, where traditional internet connections are infeasible.
“Today, about 3 billion people are still unconnected, and there is a dire need to bring them online,” Taara General Manager Mahesh Krishnaswamy told Wired. He added that even connected people have abysmally slow speeds, barely fast enough to support streaming.
Other initiatives, like Starlink, are significant but don’t solve all the problems, as in denser areas, many people have to share the transmission, and each gets less bandwidth and slower speeds. “We can offer 10, if not 100 times more bandwidth to an end user than a typical Starlink antenna, and do it for a fraction of the cost,” he added.
